Just My Luck

Hold It! That's My Creampuff!

Chapter 3
Just My Luck

I stared back at him feeling a little awestruck.

I can't believe he was in the same school as me. And we're actually classmates!

His lips formed into a smirk and I just realized I looked like a complete idiot just staring at him like that. Of course, two can play at this game...

I changed my facial expression into something more intimidating, immitating the smirk on his face and placing a hand on my hip. "Wow. The devil standing in front of me just proves that school is hell after all."

My classmates "ooohed" and "aaahed" at my remark. I know I am a genius when I'm making comebacks.

"And you call yourself an angel?" He retorded staring me down his cool facade obviously crumbling down to pieces.

Pssh. Seriously? That's all you got?

I scoffed. "Silly boy. I'm not an angel." I reached my hand up to pat his cheek twice before landing one hard smack on his soft skin leaving his eyes wide and earning a gasp from my new classmates. "I'm your worst nightmare."

Boom! Score one for the Sooyoungster! I am on fire!

"Oops. You might want to ice that." I gave him one sarcastic smile before scowling towards an empty seat at the back row. Well I assumed it was empty because no one was sitting there.

I walked pass a few classmates who had a few grin on their faces and girls who had a scowl on theirs. I'm guessing those are his fans.

I sat down on the empty desk and decided to ignore the whole classroom when mr. devil himself came marching up my desk. He was fuming mad and the red hand mark on his cheek made it evident that I had slapped him hard. I couldn't help but laugh at his cheeky little face. Even when he slammed a hand down the surface of my new desk I was still cracking up.

"You have the guts to walk right into this school and throw all this bull at me!? How'd you even get in a prestigious house of education like this?"

I stood up from my seat so that I could argue with him better because so far, me sitting and staring up at his towering height made my neck hurt.

"Because I'm just so smart, that's why." I replied filling my voice with arrogance.

He narrowed his eyes at me then. So I also did the same thing.

The next thing I knew we were both indulged in a stare contest whereas 10 seconds had already passed and none of us even flinch. If we didn't here the door of the classroom open it would have taken us longer to break our eyes apart.

"What is going on here?" The teacher had asked when she had caught sight of two towering students staring daggers at each other right at the back of the room.

Our other classmates scurried to their seats right away leaving us to be the only ones who were standing.

She walked over to us and looked at us sternly. It was so funny because she was so tiny compared to us. If I estimated right, I'd say she was exactly 5 foot and 1 inch.

"You must be the new student Choi Sooyoung." She said eyeing me from head to toe. Then she turned to the person beside me and cockeed an eyebrow. "This might very well be our first offense, is it not Shim Changmin?"

With a sigh and a click of the tongue she returned to her desk at the front.

"Because you're new and because this is your first offense, I'll let this one slide. Arasso?"

Changmin and I turned our heads to look at each other then back at the teacher. Coincidentially, we nodded our heads at the same time and also said, "Arasso." at the same time too.

"Good. Now return to your seats before I change my mind."

We both nodded our head and returned to our seats. Unfortunately Changmin's desk was only right behind me, but so far he didn't do anything reckless.

"Can I get a volunteer to solve this problem on the board?"

Recognizing the problem on the board I raised my hand up to volunteer.

I could feel the stare Changmin was giving me when I stood from my seat and approached the board. My hand glided on the surface so easily as I wrote the equation needed to get the answer. Of course, I was right.

"Very good miss Choi. I could see that mr Shim Changmin will have a tough rival in this class."

I gave him a sheepish grin when I got back to my seat. I heard him mumble something like, "lucky start" or something close to that.

Ms Lee, our teacher kept on discussing our week's lessons when a female student suddenly barged in the class with only 15  minutes remaining 'till the bell rings.

My eyes were set on her. She was the girl that was sitting in the passenger seat of the convertible that almost ran me over.

Her light brown hair was a mess and the beads of seat on her forehead trickled down to her neck. Don't get me wrong, I thought she was beautiful. She just looked a little haggard compared to what she looked like when I saw her earlier today. Yes she looked like a wet dog at the back of that car, but still...

"I'm sorry I'm late ma'am." She apologized bowing a complete 90 degrees. "There was a hasle this morning and we were sent to the principal's office- "

"I'm well informed miss Kim. Please take a seat."

She bowed once again and proceeded towards the empty desk right beside me.

I couldn't stop staring at her! I know it might creep her out, but for some reason I had this gut feeling that urged me to say hi and introduce myself. She probably felt me staring at her because the minute she was comfortable in her seat she turned her head towards my direction.

Her eyes widened and her face beamed when her eyes landed on me.

"You're that girl Yuri almost ran over!" She exclaimed her voice an audible whisper.

"Uhm... yeah." I replied a little awkwardly tearing my eyes away from her and into the notes in front of me.

In exactly 15 minutes the door had rang and I was already itching to leave the classroom when a hand suddenly popped up in my line of sight.

I traced the arm with my eyes where the hand was attached and found the girl beaming at me.

"Kim Hyoyeon." She introduced.

I took her hand and shook it.

"Choi Sooyoung."

"Sorry about this morning. Yuri had insisted that she drive to practice right before getting her license. She completely forgot the difference between the accelerate and the breaks. Sunny went hysterical because she almost crashed her new car." Hyoyeon chuckled remembering the events while I just stared at her.

For some reason I felt comfortable around her and it's wierd because she kept on talking none-stop until we finally needed to go back to our seats for our next class. That's when the devil behind me started to awaken.

That Shim Changmin never failed to "accidentally" kick the leg of my seat whenever his pen fell on the floor. I swear if the teacher just wasn't there in front of the classroom I would have stood up from my seat and strangled him lifeless. He was just so full of himself! Just him sitting there behind for the whole morning classes was sheer torture in my part.

When the lunch bell rang Hyoyeon immediately draged me out of my seat and classroom.

At that point I would have been annoyed, but I heard Changmin's chair screech and sonner than later he was already by my seat. He would have said something if it wasn't for the fact that Hyoyeon suddenly grabbed my wrist and tugged at me. Now that? Was a save.

"Why'd you do that back there?" I asked Hyoyeon when we were in the hallways and on our way to the cafeteria.

"Do what?" She asked seeming a little confused.

"Pull me when Changmin tried to talk to me?"

Honestly, I seriously didn't mind it, but she clearly saw that the guy was gonna talk me. I'm sure she wasn't that rude enough to just pull someone out of a conversation with no warning.

"It's because I saw Jessica walk past the back door." Was all she said.

That's it? No other reason? Seriously who is this Jessica chick anyways? Maybe my question will be answered if I actually voiced them out, but just when I was about to do so, someone called out to Hyoyeon. It was the girl who almost ran me over. She was with the girl who stepped on the breaks just in time.

"Yuri, Sunny, this is Sooyoung." She introduced when the two girls got to us.

The two of them smiled and bowed to show their respects.

My eyes were on the one who was behind the wheel of the car earlier, whose name seemed to be Yuri. Yeahp, my eyeballs certainly glued on her.

She tilted her head and her eyes went wide.

"Omo! You're that girl I almost ran over!"

Binggo. You did see me. I guess I wasn't that invisible after all.

"That's what she said earlier." I remarked pointing my thumb over to Hyoyeon's direction.

The four of us laughed and proceeded on our way to the cafeteria. Once we entered the big doors the delicious smell of food wafted through the air and into my nose. My senses were tingling with anticipation already and I couldn't help but fasten my pace over to the line formed right at the buffet table. Yes, a buffet table. The school was that "prestigious".

"Mianhe." Yuri had said standing behind me in the the line. "I never got to apologize earlier because we had a little trouble with Jessica."

Okay so this is the second time I've heard the name Jessica and it wasn't at all used in a tone of endearment, but rather a tone used to express annoyance or distaste towards someone that you loathed.

"Who is this Jessica anyway? Is she that special for her to be a hot topic between you girls?" I asked them choosing from the numerous dishes offered in the cafeteria menu.

My eyes widened when I read the price listing.

They must be joking right? The prices were way over board! And to think my father only gave me 15 000 won for the week. I believe I have previously expressed my dissapproval of such small amount of money in my hands.

"They must be kidding right?" I muttered in a very low voice.

Sunny had seem to notice me gawk at the prices of the food and mentally estimate my money inside my head.

"I could pay for your meal if you wanted." She offered a little too generously. Honestly, these girls are really comfortable around me for some reason. Either they wanted something from me or they're just simply that friendly. But there is also the option of feeling very guilty for almost murdering the new student.

I waved both my hands no and took a step away from her. "Ani, ani... I'm not eating lunch."

Disk scratch! Did I just seriously say that?

Yuri and Hyoyeon stopped looking at the menu board so they can look at me.

"Waeyo?" Hyoyeon asked.

"I'm on a diet." I reasoned.

Seriously!? What is wrong with me? I am Choi Sooyoung and I never go on a diet or ever skipped a meal in my life. EVER.

"But you're so skinny, you need to eat." Yuri urged taking away a tray of food from a student who just passed us and shoved it over to me.

That was a little y of her but the student didn't even react. Maybe she was shocked when her tray was suddenly snatched out of her hands, but aside from that all she did was just blink once and then go to the end of the line so she could order another meal. Oh and just so you know, we are already in the middle of the line and not quite on the buffet table yet and according to my calculations in any second now, I would be leaving this line and will be sitting in one of the tables with no tray of food in hand.

I pushed the tray back into Yuri's hands. "So did that other student. Why'd you take it away from her?"

"You mean Luna? No need to worry." She reassured. Although she said that, I'm doing quite the opposite.

"Please don't strain yourself from over-thinking Sooyoung-ah. Luna is my cousin and she might have been quiet about what I did, but believe me she'll just take her revenge later by putting water balloons in my pillow before I go to bed."

I was still not convinced though. What is wrong with the people in this school anyways!?

"If it makes you feel better sometime Luna would sometimes hide my clothes right after practice."

She said what now?

Hyoyeon nodded her head and snickered. "Yeah, I still have the picture of Yuri going out of the locker room with only a towel on."

To prove her statement Hyoyeon whipped her phone out of her pocket and showed me the picture. Sure enough, it was Yuri wearing a skimpy pink towel while trying her best to cover the phone's camera with her hand.

I stared at the tray of food in my hands and then at the Luna girl Yuri was talking about.

She was casually standing there in line with her arms crossed on her chest as if she just got there for some reason.

I couldn't take the guilt so I walked right up to her and returned her the tray.

Her eyebrows arched up the minute I shoved it at her hands.

"You're seriously giving this back?" She asked me.

"It's yours isn't it?" I remarked.

"Yeah..." She replied trailing off. She took one look at the tray before swirling on her heels and walking towards a table where four other girls sat at. She didn't even bother to thank me!

"y..." Was the only thing I could conjure up after experiencing such a cold shoulder.

"She's like that, you'll get used to it." Hyoyeon interupted.

I turned to them and scowled at their trays loaded with food. I swear I could see myself drool at Hyoyeon's decadent cake.

"Are you sure you don't want to eat Sooyoung-sshi? I could really get you you're lunch you know." Sunny offered again.

It was tempting but once again, I said no. Pabo me.

They stared at me obviously unsure of what I said and proceeded to an empty table right at the end of the hall. We talked and ate (well they ate) at the same time sharing some laughter filled moments as I tried my best not think of food while I was obviously surrounded by a lot.

My stomache was growling like crazy and I chose to ignore it and just kept laughing with them.

"Hey look over there." Hyoyeon pointed her fork somewhere right behind me.

Bad idea. Her fork still had a chunk of cake in it and it gave me half-a-mind to lean in and take a bite.

I turned away from her fork and looked back to where she was pointing and saw the three girls that went out of the silver sedan this morning.

"You asked about her earlier didn't you?" Hyoyeon said. "That's Jung Jessica and her minions Hwang Tiffany and Im Yoona."

"So she is the queenka..." I remarked watching three girls who looked like they were straight out of the movie Mean Girls.

Sunny scoffed. "Self-proclaimed queenka. She's not even the cheer captain of this school."

I know I should ask who was the cheer captain of this school, but why should I? I'm not that curious anyways. And if Sunny really wants me to know who's the cheer captain of the school's cheer squad then she'd just have to tell me immediately right?

"Victoria Song is."

Yhep. Definitely didn't need to ask.

Well now that my curiousity has been fed I can take my eyes off the scowling panthers of the school and back to my irksome hunger for food. We changed the topic after that because as it turns out, they also didn't want to talk about the reign of Jessica Jung in this school, just as how I do not want to get myself indulged in typical school life gossip.

Yuri and Sunny went back to their classrooms after lunch while Hyoyeon and I decided to hang around in the school's courtyard before our first period class in the afternoon.

We were laughing and talking about a TV show that we surprisingly have in common when a familiar dude caught the corner of my eye.

He saw me too. How can I tell? Because he was walking right over to us with his bleached blonde friend in tow.

Hyoyeon saw where I was looking at and turned her head to that direction. I took note of the fact that she froze on the spot when my cousin and his idiotic best friend approached us with a huge grin on their faces.

"Oh god no, I see two walking idiots going this way. We should leave." I told Hyoyeon while picking up my bags. Sadly though, te two were already in front of us.

"Sooyoung! Why didn't you tell me you were transferring here!"

And that is my cousin Lee Donghae. I didn't tell him I was transferring because I knew he was in this school. His mom (who was my mom's little sister) was one of the reasons why I wa transferred here in the first place, but I guess my aunt didn't inform him about it judging by the schock look on his face.

"I didn't have time to contact you. Now me and my friend- "

"Hey Hyoyeon." He greeted.

Oh great... they knew each other.

"Oppa..." She muttered first looking at Donghae and then turning to Eunhyuk.

I just learned something from Hyoyeon that day. She had a crush on Eunhyuk! I can tell by the way she refuses to look at him straight in the eyes and the fact that the color in her face suddenly became a little darker. Eunhyuk was oblivious of course, just like any other boy out there. If I said so myself I'd say he was only dismissing her behavior as ignorance.

"So how'd you guys meet each other?" Donghae asked striking up a conversation.

"Her friend Yuri almost killed me by running me over with a car."

"Kkabyul?" He questioned looking directly my way.

"Kkab- what?" I shook my head dismissively. "Whatever we're going."

Me and Hyoyeon walked out of there before the two could infect us with their stupidity disease.

xXx

Afternoon classes went by smoothly with me and Hyoyeon comparing notes every now and then with each 5 minutes break. I wouldn't say it ran river pebble smooth though. It had a few dents, naming: Shim Changmin. I would have done without him showering me with his snide comments whenever I gave the right answer.

The bell rang and I stood up from my seat. "I'll be going now." I told Hyoyeon before going out of the classroom without waiting for her response.

Just as my father had asked me to do, I came by the cafe and worked... well read my Harry Potter books in the corner of the kitchen, but I helped whenever my mother had required it.

"Sooyoung-ah can you please take this fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies outside?" She asked from me.

I put down my Harry Potter book and took the tray from her.

When I was out of the kitchen door I heard someone say, "I want Choi Sooyoung to serve me personally."

My ears perked up and turned to where the voice came from. My face scowled as soon as I caught sight of his unsightly (okay so he's handsome) features. I walked warrily towards the empty platter not far away from Junye and carefully dropped the cookies there not taking my eyes off Changmin.

"I'm sorry sir but Sooyoung-sshi is not a maid here." One of the maids had said.

Damn right I'm not! I am the frikkin' daughter of the person who owns this whole place so it up you !

Just when I was about to sneak out of there he just had to turn his head towards my direction.

"Well there's miss kitchen help." I heard him smirk, followed by the screeching of a chair.

I put on my most sarcastic smile and swiveled my heels to face him.

"Yes?"

He was only a feet away from me with the counter as the only barrier between us.God I wished the counter was a wall right now.

He scanned me up and down and noted the fact that I wasn't wearing the cafe's uniform.

He was about to reach out and poke me in the shoulder when I slapped his hand away.

"Hands off the merchandise bub."

He narrowed his eyes into tiny slits and scanned me intently. I could swear by Helel's grave that he was totally checking me out. GROSS!

I felt under the graze of his stare. It made my spine cringe and the hair on the back of my neck stand in disgust.

"Here to take your revenge?" I snapped making his eyes roll back up to stare into mine.

He displayed a crooked smile on his face making me want to slam the cash register on his hard skull. "As a matter of fact, yes."

I cocked my eyebrows at him and crossed my arms. "Shincha? How're you gonna do that?"

Without taking his eyes off me he leaned towards Junye and said, "Is auntie Soa here?"

What business did he have with my mom? I swear if he does anything stupid I am going to tear him limb from limb.

I narrowed my eyes into tiny slits as Junye answered his question. And because my mom has the most perfect timing, she walked out of the kitchen to personally check if there were still creampuffs left.

Her expression dreadfully brigthened when he saw his face in the picture.

"Max!" She exclaimed.

Changmin bowed to show his formalities, which he probably looses in front of me. Next time he treats me like dirt  I'll remind him how to act around a Choi. The hard way.

"Hey auntie." He greeted.

My mom looked at me and him. "I see you've met Sooyoung."

"Yes I have. She's quite..." He trailed off purposely pretending to search for the right word. "Charming."

He gave me one glance before looking back at my mom. I swear I am gonna strangle him. Charming? Seriously? I can see the sarcasm dripping from your voice you idiot.

My mom giggled like a high school girl and proceeded to check on the creampuffs.

Changmin looked at me again and wiggled his eyebrows while nodding his head towards my mom's direction who was sticking her head inside the casket like an idiot.

"What are you cooking up you idiot...." I muttered.

"Hey auntie, is it okay if I made Sooyoung-ah my personal maid?"

My mom bumped her head on the surface of the box her head was in while Junye snickered at the ridiculous request. My eyes instantly threw daggers at him.

"M-mwo?" She asked holding the place she bumped.

"I'll ask my father to reduce your interest from 5% to 3% if she becomes my personal maid."

Seriously mom, just tell him that I am your daughter!

My mom stared off into space as I scowled at her. Seriously mom!? You're actually thinking about this?

"I'll consult her boss first before giving you my answer." She told him her face beaming with pride.

Mom!? ing seriously you have got to be kidding me!? God I feel so unlady-like right now.

"Thank you so much for considering it auntie." He chuckled and took one of the freshly baked cookies from the tray and walked off.

I ground my teeth together and screamed, "I dropped that one on the kitchen floor!"

I heard him spit it out and choke at the same time as I laughed uncontrolably clutching my stomache.

"No wait. I threw that one away."

He laughed sarcastically with me an air of vengeance surrounding him. "You're funny Sooyoung." He said his face turning stone serious.

Some eyes were on us but I didn't care. I just kept giggling to myself until the door of the cafe was closed.

I turned back to my mom and Junye still trying to hold back laughter when I noticed the hug grin on their faces.

I sharply turned to my mom and pointed an accusing finger at her. "Don't think I'll let your treachery slide eomma. You didn't even say I was your beloved daughter... I am hurt." I whined earning a soft hug from her.

"I'll bake you a cream puff."

My eyes instatly lit up. But then I remembered I was mad at her so I lightly pushed her away. "Eomma!"

She just chuckled and entered the kitchen yet again.

"Here Sooyoung-sshi." Junye grabbed one of the cookies and handed it over to me. I took it from her and stared at the delightful treat.

"You're mom is crazy, but I'm sure she knows what she's doing."

I rolled my eyes and took a bite from the cookie. "Yeah right." I answered with a full mouth.

I huffed out frustratingly and stared at the cookie. I noticed there was a little chip at the side I was holding mostly because the cookies the pastry chef's baked here never chip unless dropped. Now that I think of it I did drop one cookie when I was walking out of the kitchen...

My eyes widened as my chewing slowed to a stop.

Oh god... karma strikes fast.
