Confidence

Foolish

Kikwang looked at Yoseob, entirely perplexed. He fervently waved his hands in front of Yoseob’s face, but it was futile. Whatever Yoseob was looking at, he was entirely mesmerized.

“What the?” Yoseob suddenly blurted, his eyebrows furrowing with agitation.

“What? What is it?” Kikwang asked, relieved to have Yoseob back to normal. He attempted to follow the direction that Yoseob’s eyes led, but Kikwang found no such scene that would allure someone’s gaze for that long.

Yoseob could feel his heart sink to the bottom of his stomach, his forehead wrinkling with...was it jealousy? A tall body began approaching Daphne, his arms snaking around her waist flirtatiously. The brim of his hat was pulled down low to cover half of his face, but Yoseob could recognize that figure from a mile away: Dongwoon.

With the help of alcohol in her system, Daphne began to enjoy herself, letting herself free within the music. The group suddenly opened, however, as four people approached Ji Hee, all of them suspiciously wearing hats.

“Ah, look, the BEAST boys are here!” Ji Hee announced loudly over the thumping music, tearing her partner’s arms off of her waist and walking towards Doojoon. She gave him a long hug, smiling. “Where are the other two?”

“Probably playing somewhere; no worries,” Doojoon answered, pulling away from Ji Hee’s embrace. His attention was later turned to Daphne who was standing awkwardly next to Ji Hee. Raising his eyebrow, he whispered, “Ji Hee. Is she new?”

“Oh, yes, yes, she was recently recruited a month ago. This is Daphne. Daphne, this is Doojoon. They’re from a boy group called BEAST and he’s the leader.”

BEAST? Where had she heard that before? However, her query was left unanswered as Ji Hee urgently pushed Daphne towards Doojoon and the three other males.

“Hi,” Daphne said shyly, shaking Doojoon’s hand. “Nice to meet you.”

It seemed like the rest of the group had already known the four men because Daphne was the only one exchanging introductions. Eventually, she had learned all of their names, linking them with the design of their hat as she could not see their entire faces properly: Doojoon had the black hat, Junhyung wore his slightly askew, Hyunseung had a strange logo on his, and lastly, Dongwoon’s hat still had the large, circular sticker on it.

“May I have this dance?”

Daphne turned around, following the voice behind her. She was a bit taken aback from the sudden proposal, but she later nodded in agreement, allowing Dongwoon’s arms lay securely around her waist with her back to him. They swayed to the music in unison, but a hint of tension could be sensed between their bodies as Daphne was determined to keep a small gap between them, their hips never meeting.

“Are you uncomfortable?” Dongwoon lowered his head, his lips reaching Daphne’s ears. Every time he made an effort to close the gap between them, she pulled herself further away, maintaining the distance.

A shiver ran down her spine as the nerves along her ears suddenly perked up from his deep voice. Her legs almost gave way from the jolting feeling that he gave off. “I’m...okay.”

“Why do you keep pushing me away then?”

“Sorry,” Daphne managed to utter through the blaring music. Seeing Ji Hee nearby dancing with Doojoon, she reached over to Ji Hee, her arm outstretched. Trying to be as inconspicuous as possible, Daphne tried to form her hand to resemble and a cup and brought it to continuously.

Ji Hee smiled mischievously, getting her flask out and bringing her head close to Daphne’s. “Glad you’re finally letting loose.”

Daphne smiled as Ji Hee handed the flask, downing the alcohol in one gulp in an attempt to liberate herself of any hinderance keeping her from having fun. She closed her eyes briefly, allowing the entire atmosphere engulf her worries away.

Feeling her muscles finally able to relax, Daphne brought her back to Dongwoon’s chest, her head slightly leaning against the crook of his neck. Seeing this, Dongwoon pulled Daphne closer,  bringing their hips together.

They remained that way for a while, dancing to the music without a word to each other. Perhaps it was the alcohol speaking, but Daphne began to feel restless at their monotonous movements. She tugged on Dongwoon’s hands, pulling them away from her waist as she held them high as she twirled so they would face each other. His hands returned back to her waist and she could see his lips curl up into a smile.

“Why are you hiding your face?” Daphne said flirtatiously, reaching over to take Dongwoon’s cap off. As her finger brushed the brim, Daphne felt Dongwoon’s hand stop hers, his fingers enclosing around hers.

“I’d rather not be recognized by others,” he replied, still gripping onto her hand gently. For some reason, Dongwoon couldn’t release Daphne’s hand; the moment one of his fingers would let go of hers, he felt this immediate sense of dissatisfaction.

“Oh, come on,” Daphne laughed, trying once more to grasp his cap with her free hand. “We’re working under the same company, aren’t we? I think that makes us ‘co-workers’. Shouldn’t I be allowed to see my co-worker’s face?”

Dongwoon smiled at her eagerness, caving in. He tried to take off his cap suavely, but as his hands grazed the brim, someone’s shoulder collided with his elbow, knocking the cap out of his hand.

“Oops?” chuckled Dongwoon nervously, feeling his cheeks blush slightly, catching the hat at the last minute after a few fumbles.

Daphne, however, had not given any acknowledgement of Dongwoon’s clumsiness. As he let out his low chuckle, she gazed at his eyes, captivated by his eyes that gave off such a magnetic influence, luring her entire attention towards him. Eventually, she moved her eyes down to his facial features, his nose and jaw attractively chiseled and strong. His lips were barely curved into a smile, giving Daphne’s heart momentum as she could feel it thumping in her ears. Though his blonde hair was slightly matted due to his cap, she couldn’t help but feel so swept away by his attractiveness. She really couldn’t describe it. He had this aura of poise around him that told her he knew what he was doing, despite of the previous slip up. However, her stupor was put to an end as she felt Dongwoon’s hands being abruptly torn from her hand and body.

“Daphne noona!”

It took a while for Daphne to register that someone had called out her name. She had invested so much of her attention on Dongwoon that it was difficult to comprehend what happened since it all came at her so quickly.

Daphne turned her head, raising her eyebrow as she saw the person who called her. “Yoseob?”

“I see you’ve met Dongwoon,” Yoseob casually began, taking off his cap and nudging an annoyed Dongwoon out of the way as he took Daphne’s arm and led her towards him.

Daphne could only blame the alcohol as the reason for the gears in her head moving so sluggishly, for she had not connected the pieces together until now.

“Oh! she exclaimed suddenly, looking at the rest of the BEAST members who still lingered somewhere within the circle. “They’re your group members! I had forgotten that you mentioned being in BEAST.”

“It’s okay, noona,” Yoseob smiled, glad that he had snatched her away from Dongwoon’s clutches. He suspiciously eyed Dongwoon who was standing behind Daphne, sending a hostile stare towards Yoseob. “Let’s dance!”

Twisting her head so she faced Dongwoon, Daphne sent him an apologetic look. “Is it okay?”

With contempt, Dongwoon nodded his head, moving away from Daphne and Yoseob and approaching Kikwang instead to chat.

Yoseob smiled happily, placing his hands where Dongwoon’s had been. Though Yoseob’s and Dongwoon’s touches were different, Daphne couldn’t help but sense a feeling of warmth and happiness surge through her body as Yoseob lightly positioned his hands upon her waist. Dongwoon’s grip on her was more wanton, but Yoseob’s...his was sensual and gentle.

Daphne faced Yoseob and was surprised to see an entirely different person. She searched for his childish grin, his crinkled eyes that unveiled such innocence, but she couldn’t find it. What she found was something much manlier than what she thought of Yoseob. His eyes bored into hers, confidence brilliantly showing behind his pupils. A smile still laid upon his lips, but it was much deviant than his usual grin. It was a smug smile that gave off a certain matureness about him, charming Daphne.

An unfamiliar feeling of attraction washed upon her as she continued to stare at Yoseob, their intimate bodies moving unknowingly in sync to the music. It felt like the same attraction that she had towards Dongwoon’s, but it was abundantly stronger.

Their moment was cut short, however, as the DJ halted the music, causing everyone to abruptly stop dancing. Yoseob’s face was full of disappointment, but he hastily replaced it with a smile, hugging Daphne. She felt herself stiffen the moment he pulled her in, but she eventually relaxed against his chest, beaming.

“Thanks for dancing with me,” he whispered in her ear, pulling away. “I had fun, even though it was short.”

Daphne was left speechless. When did Yoseob become so smooth and charming? It was an entirely contrasting side to him that she had never witnessed before, and she didn’t know what to make out of it.

“Daphne noona,” Dongwoon interrupted Daphne’s thoughts as promptly placed his hat in place, standing by Yoseob’s side. Yoseob’s smile immediately vanished and was replaced by a small scowl. “Since we’re ‘co-workers’ and everything, I think we should exchange numbers.”

“Of course,” Daphne complied, her daze faltering as she reached into the depths of her pocket for her cell phone.

“Thank you, noona,” Dongwoon smiled brightly, hugging Daphne a bit too tightly for Yoseob’s taste. “Hopefully I’ll see you later at Cube?” Dongwoon then turned to Yoseob, pulling his arm, “Come on, hyung. The rest are leaving really soon. Put your hat on.”

“Bye, guys,” Daphne waved, her back now facing them as she walked over to Ji Hee’s side.

“Hyung, was that the noona that you were talking about before?” Dongwoon asked as the group filed out of the dance floor.

“Yeah,” Yoseob answered flatly, still considerably irritated at Dongwoon. There was an uneasy silence that hung in the air afterwards and Dongwoon left it at that as he began to quicken his pace, catching up to Hyunseung who was in front of them.

Yoseob sighed and took a swift glance back to see Daphne one last time before he left. She was deep in conversation with Ji Hee and the rest of the back-up dancers. He could see her lips curling up into a smile, her hand tucking a loose strand behind her ear, and her nose scrunching in discomfort as Ji Hee said something to her. He laughed faintly to himself, euphoria building inside him as he tried to recall the way her body felt under his touch. He tore his eyes away from Daphne’s direction and continued to follow s out of the club. His eyes landed on Dongwoon’s back, and he felt irritated again. Dongwoon had gotten Daphne’s number before he had.

“That stupid...ugh!” Yoseob mumbled grumpily, feeling flustered as he couldn’t even find an appropriate name to insult Dongwoon. Sighing, he caught up to the rest of the members, pestering them about a summary of their night.
