CHAPTER 63
I MADE THE HEROINE FALL FOR MEAfter Charlie's revelation to Serena, she collapsed into Serena's arms, unable to endure the searing pain in her chest any longer.
The hospital hallway carried its usual scent of disinfectant. Two imposing bodyguards stood guard outside the ward, their presence deterring anyone from entering.
Through the frosted glass of the door, a figure in a white coat could be seen inside the ward. Dr. Anne examined the medical report in her hand, puzzled by its findings.
"It's quite perplexing," Dr. Anne remarked, her brow furrowed. "Charlie's examination results show no abnormalities. I even specifically checked her heart and glands, but everything appears normal."
Dr. Anne glanced at Charlie, now unconscious in her hospital bed, and concluded, "Perhaps I shouldn't have allowed her to leave the ward. I'll administer some nutritional injections for now."
Placing a reassuring hand on Serena's shoulder, who had been keeping watch by the bedside, Dr. Anne offered comfort, "Don't worry, her surgery will still proceed as planned, Serena."
Serena nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Aunt Anne."
As Dr. Anne exited the room, Serena remained by Charlie's side, watching over the girl who had just slipped into a coma. The uncertainty of the situation weighed heavily on her mind.
The events on the rooftop had left Serena deeply shaken. As she cradled the unconscious Charlie in her arms, she couldn't shake the feeling that Charlie resembled a cursed princess in a dark fairy tale. It seemed as though the day Charlie revealed her true identity she would be lost forever.
Amidst Charlie's admission of her true self, the mention of a "love letter" had sent shivers down Serena's spine. On the way back to the hospital, Serena mulled over countless scenarios regarding Charlie's identity. Yet, the notion that Charlie hailed from another world remained unexplored, a possibility Serena had never dared to imagine.
The rhythmic beeping of the monitor served as a reminder of Charlie's fragile state, prompting Serena to recall her conversation with Charlie before. Serena realized that Charlie's world differed vastly from her own—a world devoid of Alpha and Omega distinctions, a Beta world, akin to Serena's own reality.
Serena found it peculiar that the real world she inhabited was actually the content of a book in Charlie's world. It felt akin to discovering a hidden parallel universe, where their realities intersected in unexpected ways. This revelation reminded her of the intricate tapestry of dreams within dreams, where the boundaries between imagination and reality blur.
Serena gently squeezed Charlie's hand, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. The ability to share all of this with Charlie brought her immense happiness.
In that moment, Serena felt two tremors in her palms, a subtle reminder of the fragility of their situation.
As Charlie slowly opened her eyes and weakly joked, "Serena, it's really painful to confess to the heroine.."
Serena's expression soured. "You're still joking," she remarked, her dissatisfaction evident. Glancing at Charlie's monitor, she inquired, "Is your heart still hurting? Would you like some water?"
With little strength left, Charlie first shook her head, then nodded. Serena understood Charlie's unspoken request. She fetched the water and gently adjusted Charlie's bed. "Did you know your lips are paler now than when you were in a coma for three days? You always make me worry..."
The temperature of the water was just right, soothing Charlie's dry throat as she took a sip. She felt a slight easing of her fatigue.
Glancing at the familiar face she had seen every time she woke up in the hospital bed, Charlie whispered softly, "I'm sorry, I worried you again."
Serena took the water glass from Charlie's hand, her expression filled with concern. "Is it because you tell me that truth about yourself and where you come from?" she inquired gently.
Charlie pursed her lips and nodded in response to Serena.
Then, she reconsidered and suggested, "Actually, you could ask me questions, and I could answer. It might not hurt as much."
Serena shook her head at Charlie's suggestion. "No. Let's not talk about it anymore. I understand, and that's enough."
Feeling a pang of guilt as she noticed a few stars missing from Charlie's amethyst eyes, Serena realized that Charlie had wanted to share everything she knew and the world she came from with her.
It was as if a lonely traveler who had been alone for a long time finally met another person in the wasteland, and her desire to talk quickly swelled in her heart.
Serena keenly captured Charlie's emotions an
