I would like to thank the author who has given us the opportunity to read and critique of their work. I hope you find this review as something insightful and helpful, in the goal of making ourselves better as writers. Without further ado, here is the content.
Title / Description / First impression (18/20)This portion is judged by the overall impression the fic is able to evoke at first encounter.
Echoes of Absence already invokes the idea that this piece centers in something emotional, and as written in the description, it tells about a man setting out to war, leaving his beloved behind. The title and the description are enough to draw attention, as we can somewhat expect an emotionally-driven plot between two people wanting to see each other again.
Plot / Concept / Theme / Word-building (15/20)This part talks about the general point of the story, from the plot, to the setting and world-building, as well as the genres and themes that the author has chosen to tackle.
The plot is simple as it follows two perspectives, Seonghwa, a soldier in war, and his girlfriend, Yuna, whom was left behind. The theme reminds me of the war veterans and I must say, it is captured so well. The heart is present all the time, and the touch of camaraderie is something I dig in so well. It makes me a bit open-minded about the ending would be happy, sad or bittersweet, and regardless of any endings aforementioned can happen, it won’t detract much away from its theme. Let us give respect to the soldiers that fought for us for our freedom.
Characterization (14/20)This criteria judges the way characters are developed, how effective their arcs have been in terms of fleshing them out, and how convincing the parts they've played in the story.
I believe this is not much to be given a scrutiny, but the perspectives of two characters helped me to be immersed in the story. The interactions and reactions are still very much within the realm of possibility, and I personally liked how soldiers lighten up despite in a dark situation. We always need even the smallest light to keep sane. The motivation behind Seonghwa’s character is understandable in many levels and who doesn’t want to feel the embrace of their beloved from a situation where uncertainty is there at its best.
