CH 2
Never Too LateKihyun definitely didn't understand why his phone rang in the middle of rehearsal. The ringtone was his mother's own. Why would she be calling him? He quickly answers only to hear gibberish on the other end. Kihyun couldn't help but burst into laughter. Ahn had clearly stolen her phone. I.M nearby comes over to go check on Kihyun.
"Ahn, give her back her phone."
I.M tilts his head mouthing at Kihyun, "Who is Ahn?"
"Ahn--" Kihyun could hear his mother calling Ahn in the background. He mouths to I.M letting him know what was going on. Before the call ends Kihyun's heartaches hearing Ahn whine. "...did he say, Uncle?"
"I don't know did he?"
"Sorry... I had to take that."
"So... care to explain who Ahn is?"
"Ah, right! I forgot that I haven't told you or the others. My mom is watching one of my old friend's kid."
"She's just babysitting? Like free or something?"
Kihyun chuckles softly. He couldn't exactly tell him all about the woman's sorted past. Hyejin didn't need her business spread around. Kihyun did his best to go through the rest of day. He sprinkled details about Ahn into his conversations with I.M. A strange number messages him right before Kihyun's schedule ends.
"Hey you busy? My mom wants to go to dinner. She said to invite any members."
"...sure. I'm free."
Kihyun and I.M make their way to a restaurant. The two men find Hyejin and Ahn but no Kihyun's mom. I.M introduces himself right away. Kihyun takes a seat far enough away from Hyejin well still being close to Ahn. The toddler looks bored of everything. Hyejin sits there red-faced 'ignoring' him and I.M despite I.M's attempts.
"This is Hyejin and that little man is Ahn."
Ahn perks up hearing his name.
"Hello, Ahn. You can call me older brother."
Hyejin cuts in softly, "He doesn't talk..."
Kihyun blinks surprised to hear her voice. It seemed deeper than he remembered it.
"...how old is he?"
Kihyun could see her deflate as she answered him. "Ahn's only one year old."
"One? ...no wait. He's only one?"
Hyejin nods softly. Kihyun reaches out to pat Ahn's head. He freezes looking at Kihyun. It takes a moment for Ahn to recover. The toddler quickly finds silverware and immediately starts smacking it off the table. Hyejin hangs her head. Kihyun noticed he could faintly see the scar by her eyebrow. His gaze softens as he remembers how that came to be.
"So where is Miss Yoo?"
Hyejin looks at Ahn. "...she tricked me too. I thought she was gonna be the only one here."
"I understand." Kihyun hangs his head.
I.M looks between the two then sighs. "Should we leave? I mean if we make you uncomfortable--"
"Not we. Me, I.M... It's not you."
I.M leans back in his chair growing uncomfortable himself the longer this tension goes. Kihyun opens his mouth to speak when Ahn hands him a chopstick. He smiles taking it putting it down with a smile.
"S-sorry... He's been very interested in men."
I.M blinks, "What do you mean?"
Kihyun interrupts I.M, "Hyejin's very close family members are women."
Hyejin nods.
"Ah. Then he's interested cause we look different."
"We're also speaking Korean."
I.M switches to English focusing on the little boy. Kihyun doesn't fail to notice how offended Hyejin looks. Maybe she still had the same habits or thoughts? Back then she didn't like if Kihyun spoke about her to others. She wasn't much on others knowing anything she considered too personal even if others didn't see it as personal. I.M chuckles as Ahn tries to crawl into his mother's lap. Kihyun tried to reach out to grab Ahn.
"Mom mom mom mom mom"
"Yes, baby. You're in mommy's lap."
Ahn looks up at her. "Daddy..."
Kihyun could see her expression fade a bit. Something really bad must have happened with Ahn's father. He wanted to demand to know what but it wasn't his place. Kihyun was barely considered a friend based on how Hyejin looked at him.
