“Can you not tell my husband about this?”

The Significance of One

Ri In’s POV

Today I had to wake up early and prepare breakfast for Junsu. Since we have graduated, Junsu is now working for his father as a manager at his company. I slowly tried to climb out of bed but was unsuccessful. I tried again, this time; I used my hands to support my weight. I was struggling at first but succeeded in climbing out of bed. I scooted over to the wheel chair and cautiously sat on it. I finally got myself on the chair.

I was rolling myself on the wheel chair to go downstairs when I realised, there are stairs! How am I to go downstairs at this situation? I thought of some things but none of them seem to work. I looked at the analogue clock on the wall on my left. It said: 5.40 AM. Junsu is going to wake up soon but I still don’t know how to get down. Wait, I have a pair of crutches in my room. They will help. I rolled my wheel chair softly back to my room and reached down under the bed and got my crutched out. I tried to stand on the crutches but it shot pain up my leg. I winced. I wanted to scream but I was afraid of waking Junsu up. I attempted to try again but my leg still hurt. I was making myself not scream, resulting to me having tears at the edge of my eyes. I attempted again, and this time, my leg didn’t hurt as much. I took advantage of this a scampered forward to the door. My eyes really had tears. I slowly walked down the stairs, taking one step at a time. Pain shot up each time I placed my foot on one of the steps but I kept going. Junsu would wake up soon so I had to go down stairs quickly to prepare him breakfast. I took another step and nearly fell but steadied myself. I finally reached the last step and got off the steps. I slowly limped my way to the kitchen.

I walked to the cupboards to grab a few ingredients and utensils. I made bacon and eggs for Junsu. I also made a cup of coffee for Junsu, actually, I made three; one very sweet, one very bitter and one mild. I slowly sat down at the table to rest and wait for Junsu to come down.

Junsu’s POV

I was woken by the smell of food. I sniffed the sir and smelt bacon and eggs. Yum! I quickly prepared myself and went downstairs. I thought that the chef had come in early to prepare breakfast but what I saw once I arrive in the kitchen shocked me. It was Ri In. She looked up at me and smiled.

“Morning, Junsu-ah,” she greeted me happily. I suddenly got angry at her. Only Hee Bon is allowed to call me that! I slammed my hand on the table. She jumped.

“Don’t you ever call me Junsu-ah! I only permit you to call me Junsu-shii! You hear that?” I shouted at her. She whimpered a little. She had a very frightened face; the face that was the same on the night of the graduation party. She slowly nodded her head at me. I sat down and stared at my meal before eating it. It was really nice. A warm wave of ecstasy and happiness grew in me when I took a bite. I finished the food in a matter of minutes and saw three cups of coffee beside me. I looked at her.

“I-I didn’t know what you liked s-so I thought that I will make t-three for you to choose,” she explained. I looked at the three cups of coffee. I wasn’t a person that would drink coffee so I grabbed the three cups of coffee and walked over to the sink. I slowly poured the contents of the cup into the sink, watching it wash out. All that brown liquid came out, slowly devouring right in front of my eyes; the strong smell of caffeine still there.Once I was finished, I wiped my hands clean and walked over to the lounge room to retrieve my stuff and headed for the door.

“Good luck and have a safe trip, Junsu-shii,” she said. I didn’t look at her and continued my pace to the door. I opened it and walked out.

Ri In’s POV

I settled myself on the sofa. I was happy that he enjoyed the breakfast but my heart sank when he went up to the sink and poured the contents out. Oh well, as long as he enjoys it then I am happy. I was on the verge of tears when he told me not to call him Junsu-ah. One, because of his tone and two, what he said. I slowly walked up the stairs with my crutches

Junsu’s POV

I was driving along the road when I remembered something. Ri In wasn’t on her wheel chair and she had to go downstairs with her crutches. That must have made her very exhausted. She went through all that trouble just to make me breakfast and I just poured her coffee down the sink! How could I be so cruel?! She went through all that but was only disappointed by me. I mentally hit myself and banged my hand hardly on the steering wheel. It made a honk, followed by another honk made by the car behind me, indicating that it was greed light. I drove off, thinking about Ri In the whole time.

Ri In’s POV

I was lying on my head, having flashbacks of what the doctor said.

*flashback*

“Miss Ri In, due to the problem that you cannot have drugs that will make you asleep, you can either operate on the leg or head. Though, if you operate on the leg then you will be able to bear a child. But doing it on the head will make you not be able to bear a child because on the operation, we might trigger another cell that will weaken you to the condition that you won’t be able to be pregnant. But doing it on the head will hurt less,” the doctor told me. No! What do I do now? Wait! I thought about it for awhile, leaving my brain to fight, I finally decided.

“I will do the operation on my leg,” I told the doctor. I had concerns and doubts but I am still holding the chance of having Junsu’s child. Even though it might not happen but there is still a slim chance.

“OK. The operation will be on your leg. I will arrange it for you. I will be going now,” the doctor said and walked out.

“Doctor!” I called. He turned to face me.

“Can you not tell my husband about this?” I requested.

“Are you sure? Because if the-” he started.

“No, no. Please don’t tell him!” I practically begged the doctor.

“OK. If it is what you want,” the doctor said softly and left. I sighed after he left, thinking of the possibilities of the future.

*end flashback*

I sighed at the thought. Now I have to handle with my leg. I sighed again and reached to my left and got out the files that Yeonhee had given to me the other day.

Junsu’s POV

When I was in my office, I was restless. I couldn’t get myself to work. Strange thing is that the person I thought about was, not Hee Bon, but Ri In. I got frustrated with myself and slammed my fist on the table. I accidently knocked my cup of tea and it spilt on the documents. I quickly reached out to get a tissue and immediately started wiping the stain on my documents. After wiping my documents clean, I shuffled the documents to put them in a neat pile. While I was shuffling them, I piece of paper feel out. I picked it up and was about to put it back in the pile when I realised it was the form I had to sign to get Ri In have an operation on her leg. I briefly read the document and was about to put it back when something on it caught my attention. I read it again. It read’

Operation on leg to cure injury caused by head.

Huh? It was just that I realised that the operation was made on the leg but it was the head that got injured. Why didn’t she operate on her head? Wouldn’t doing that ease the pain or something like that? I quickly diverted my attention to the phone number on the top of the piece of paper. I picked up my phone and dialled the number. After a couple of rings, someone picked up the phone.

“Bonjuor?” someone asked. Luckily I knew French or I would be stuck in this situation.

“Salut, je me demandais si il n'y a..,”(Hi, I was wondering if there is…) I said. I looked back at the document to confirm the doctor’s name.

“M.Lamon?” (Dr. Lamon?) I finished.

“Ah! Il est ici. Il me parle maintenant” (Ah. He is here. He is talking to me now) she said.

“M. Lamon!” the other line called.

“Hello?” Dr. Lamon said. Dr. Lamon knows how to speak Korean.

“Dr. Lamon. Can I ask you some questions concerning my wife?” I asked.

“Of course!” he replied.

“Can you tell me why she did her operation on her leg instead of her head?” I asked. After I asked, the other line was silent.

“Dr. Lamon! Are you still there?” I questioned.

“Yes, yes! About your wife…” the doctor started.
