Chapter 10 (End)

What The Heart Wants

Several months later…

Short arms suddenly wrapped around her torso, effectively making the younger woman inelegantly choke on her wine. Boyish laughter rang through Jessica’s ears as she turned around and gave the person responsible one of her iciest glares for making her spill her vintage.

“Yah!! What the hell, Kim Taeyeon?!”

Taeyeon grinned as she watched the brunette clean up after herself, laughing when Jessica smacked her arms repeatedly for surprising her.

“Okay, okay, I’m sorry!” the leader said, chuckling as she reached out to pinch Jessica’s cute pouty face affectionately.

“What are you even doing here? And who gave you permission to come inside my apartment?!”

The older woman shrugged, not showing any sign of remorse for startling the other girl nor dropping by and entering uninvited. Jessica rolled her eyes at the midget’s haughtiness and just went back inside the living room. Taeyeon wordlessly followed her in, securely locking the door to the balcony and closing the curtains before making her way towards the master bedroom.

“I should really remember to change my passcode when we get back. These surprise visits will be the death of me,” Jessica loudly complained, voice coming from the en suite bathroom as she started washing up for the night.

Taeyeon took the liberty to prepare the younger woman’s bed, fluffing up the pillows and rolling back the duvet, before settling herself in on one side.

“You know as well as I do that you’ll forget that you ever changed it. And you’ll most likely tell me as soon as you do anyway because we both know you absolutely won’t remember the new one.”

Jessica poked her head out, toothbrush in hand and mouth foamy, glaring at the stupid midget who had the audacity to make herself comfortable in her home. Taeyeon just smiled at the other’s adorably miffed expression and blew her a playful kiss. The younger woman blushed and quickly retreated back inside the bathroom to finish up.

Taeyeon waited patiently for another half hour before Jessica finally graced her with her presence, smirking as she shamelessly ogled the brunette’s choice of sleepwear, the latter scowling down at her, face flushed from the not-so-unwanted attention she was getting.

“Why are you here, Tae? You really should go home now. It’s late, I’m sleepy, and we have an early flight tomorrow.”

“Why didn’t you just stay at the dorm? Isn’t it better for all of us to go to the airport together than you meeting us there instead? Even Soo and Maknae’s there.”

Jessica sat on the bed, her back facing the midget as she started combing her lustrous hair.

“It’s more practical to just leave from here. I’m too lazy to haul my luggage from one place to another and I don’t want to trouble Manager-oppa more than necessary.”

The brunette shyly smiled when she felt Taeyeon slowly shift towards her, taking the brush from her hand and took over brushing her hair carefully. Jessica closed her eyes and bit back a moan when the older woman started to massage her scalp in soothing motions, from her temples down to her nape.

Taeyeon finished her mini pampering session with a firm kiss on the younger girl’s bare shoulder, Jessica looking up and smiling at her sweetly, eyes grateful.

“Would you mind if I become your personal alarm clock for tomorrow? May I stay the night?”

Jessica’s eyes widened, blush quickly returning as she stood up and busied herself doing nothing at her vanity.

“Are you sure? Did you inform our Manager-oppas? Do the girls know? What about your stuff?”

Taeyeon chuckled at seeing Jessica’s suddenly nervous state and patiently answered all her queries.

“Everything’s settled, Sica-ya,” she reassured the anxious girl and gently took her hand and led her back to bed.

With nothing more to reason with, the brunette yielded and bashfully allowed herself to be pulled as Taeyeon resettled herself on the bed and tucked the both of them under the warm blanket, immediately spooning Jessica tightly like it was the most natural thing to do. Jessica’s cheek flushed and her heart raced.

“T-taengoo…”

The midget placed a chaste kiss on the brunette’s head, breath tickling Jessica’s ear and making her shiver.

“Shhh. Sleep now, Princess. It’ll be a busy day tomorrow.”

Jessica just nodded and closed her eyes, savoring her Taengoo’s familiar warmth, lulling her to sleep.

Taeyeon couldn’t help but gaze lovingly at the sleeping woman beside her.

It was early the next morning when the midget woke up feeling happy and refreshed as she realized that she was in Sooyeon’s apartment, in Sooyeon’s bed, with Sooyeon’s body nestled contentedly on her chest, their arms and legs tangled together. She internally giggled as she could imagine the younger woman’s cute embarrassed face when she’d find out just how intimate they’d gotten throughout the night.

It took a while for both of them to ease back into a comfortable state before their relationship got rocky, starting from relearning how not to move away from each other in public. Jessica was still too shy to initiate any direct form of skinship like how she used to, but Taeyeon was actually enjoying the more bashful side of the brunette that she didn’t get to see often in the past. (She admitted that that was her fault).

She reminded herself to take initiative more often, loving how Jessica could become a blushing mess with just the simplest attention from the older woman. Looking back, Taeyeon was sad that they wasted years apart because she was too stubborn to understand Jessica’s needs and wants better, pushing her away instead of talking about it properly.

But it was too late to dwell on old regrets, and Taeyeon would gladly pay back every ounce of affection that her beloved Sooyeon had showered her two, three-fold. Jessica actually asked her not to overdo it to the point that it looked like she was trying too hard to change, but Taeyeon was a willing participant, learning how to be more considerate with the help of the other members.

They hadn’t exactly talked again on where their relationship currently stood, but the midget told herself that “good things come to those who wait,” and she’d patiently wait for Sooyeon while the two got to know each other again for the sake of a more promising future together.

Taeyeon wanted to continue to relish in the serenity of the morning with the beautiful brunette sleeping soundly next to her a bit more but knew that she needed to get the both of them ready before their manager arrived. She carefully extricated herself from the younger woman, melting when Jessica unconsciously tightened her hold on the other girl, not allowing her to leave.

“Rise and shine, Baby,” Taeyeon cooed, coaxing the brunette to wake up as gently as she could, knowing that Jessica could be really violent when woken up carelessly.

It took a while for Jessica to regain consciousness, not fully comprehending the presence of her leader who was questionably sharing her bed with her, their limbs intertwined. Taeyeon couldn’t help but laugh as the younger woman finally realized their current position, her pale face morphing into an adorable tomato color, the former happy that Jessica didn’t pull away like she would do but nuzzled closer instead to hide her red cheeks. That was an improvement.

“Aigoo, why are you so adorable, Sooyeon-ah?”

Jessica lightly punched the other’s chest in reply, sighing when Taeyeon hugged her tighter and placed a tender kiss on her forehead, thinking that there was nowhere she’d rather be at that moment than in the safety of her Taengoo’s arms.

“Unnie!”

Jessica hissed as she accidentally bumped her knee on the underside of the table, startled out of her thoughts. She rolled her eyes as she beckoned for her sister to sit across her, sighing when she also saw Yuri following behind.

“You left us behind, Unnie. You wanted to be alone that badly?”

The older woman leaned over the table and flicked Yoona on the forehead, Yuri laughing at the pouting girl.

“It’s rare for us to get any alone time in-between work. Who am I to miss this opportunity?”

“Are we bothering you, Sica?” The brunette just waved her hand dismissively as she sipped her iced latte.

“An hour of peace is more than I can ask for so I can’t really complain. Did you guys just finish the shoot?” The two younger girls nodded.

“It’s Fany and Seo’s turn now so we still have at least another hour to chill. I’ll get something to drink. What do you want, Yoong?”

Jessica tuned the others out as she drifted back to her own thoughts, mindlessly stirring her drink. She didn’t pay any mind to her surroundings until she felt someone staring at her intently.

“What do you want, Im Yoona?”

Said girl giggled, happily observing her airheaded unnie.

“Nothing, really. Just curious as to what you’re thinking about right now. Or is it a who?”

Jessica chuckled and shook her head in amusement, knowing that the younger girl was spot-on on what’s running through her head at that moment.

“How are you and Tae-unnie, Unnie? I’m sorry I haven’t been talking to you guys much. We haven’t really been spending time together because of individual schedules.”

“Don’t feel bad, Yoongie. All of us are busy the past months. Let’s just be thankful that we have this time to hang out, even for a while. But I’m sorry, too, for not being a good unnie lately. I know how extremely tired you are.”

Yoona smiled and held the older girl’s free hand reassuringly.

“No worries, Unnie. But don’t think you’ll get off that easily from answering my question.”

“Yah! You always know how to ruin a moment, you brat!”

“Who’s a brat?”

“She is,” Jessica and Yoona said at the same time. The two looked at each other and laughed, Yuri giggling as she enjoyed seeing her sisters so carefree despite their hectic lifestyle.

“But seriously, though, Unnie. You two seem to be doing okay. Are you back together?”

Yuri looked curiously at the second-eldest as she sipped her drink, realizing what the other girls were discussing while she was away.

“Taeyeon has been looking happier for a while now. What gives?”

Jessica blushed as she was put on the hot seat but unconsciously smiled at the thought of the midget.

“You look happy, too, Sica-ya. Have you finally talked to her about your relationship?”

The brunette shook her head. She stayed silent for a while, the two taller girls waiting patiently for Jessica to gather her thoughts before replying.

“I… I actually don’t know what our status is right now, to be honest. We haven’t talked about it yet since we’ve been preoccupied lately.”

“But you’re still exclusive, right?”

“Uhh, yes? I really don’t think that it ever changed even with the whole dating thing with that ert. Or so she claims.”

Everyone rolled their eyes as they recalled the Ice Princess’ failed date several months prior.

“Tae-unnie was so cool, wasn’t she? But she was also so scary! I thought the guy would wet his pants!”

The three shared a good laugh as they reminisced that fateful night which was followed by companionable silence.

“She really is a force to be reckoned with, huh? After that night, who would’ve thought we’d see the day that she’d be clingier than me? It was so uncomfortable, especially because I wasn’t used to that side of her. I now know how she felt when I would cling to her excessively, but the difference is that I am unable to push her away.”

“Then it turned into small, quick dates whenever we could squeeze some time in. The small gifts here and there. And then Hyo told me that we looked like two teenagers during the courting phase! Seriously! It felt nice, though, even if I’m still getting used to this new her. I still sometimes think that it won’t last.”

Jessica glanced at her companions, relieved that they were listening attentively without any judgments nor unneeded comments.

“After that, she got bolder, and until now I can’t wrap my head at the thought that she can be romantic when she wants to be. You know about her sneaking inside my apartment at odd hours, right? Gosh, that was creepy! Then I realized that it was her crazy, idiotic, Taeyeon-ish way of wanting to spend more time with me, even though she’d only stay for an hour or two. Who would’ve thought she had it in her to be so random?”

“So what do you want to do now? You seem to be ready to try again with her.”

Jessica leaned back and looked out the window of the café they were in, deep in thought again.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready knowing how much it hurts the first time around, but if she’s finally willing to take a chance on us for the better, then who am I to say no? She’s very convincing.”

She never noticed the knowing glances her members exchanged with each other, smirks on their mischievous faces.

Later, when all the girls were gathered back together for another group photoshoot, two pairs of eyes met another’s, exchanging bright smiles and a thumbs up.

Stephanie looked down at her watch and hastened her pace with Juhyun in tow as they hurriedly entered a restaurant that was near their Vegas hotel, heading straight for one of the private rooms.

“Make sure you have everything, Juhyun-ah. She’ll freak out if we mess up.”

“Don’t worry, Unnie. It’s all in here,” Maknae answered, clutching a white envelope protectively.

Fany nodded and smiled, barging inside the room, voice as loud as ever.

“Hey, girls! Sorry, we’re late!”

The people already present inside looked up and welcomed them warmly, the wild atmosphere felt as soon as they stepped in.

“Where’d you guys go, Steph?” asked a curious Jessica as Stephanie sat beside her. Juhyun went and sat at the other end of the rectangular table.

“I asked Juhyunnie to accompany me for a quick shopping trip earlier. We didn’t notice the time and we still needed to drop off the bags in the hotel that’s why we got here only now.”

The brunette pouted. “Aww, why didn’t you tell me you were going shopping? I would’ve wanted to come, too,” Jessica adorably whined which earned her a pat on the head from the eye-smiling girl.

“It was a spur-of-the-moment thing, Jessi. I’ll accompany you tomorrow since it’ll be our last day here, okay? But I thought you went out with Taetae, Sunny, and Hyo earlier. Didn’t you have fun with them?”

“I-I did! We did. Uh.. umm..”

Jessica took a quick glance at the person right across from her before shying away, her face beginning to redden significantly as she played with her food. Fany, highly amused, tilted her head towards her leader at the other side of the table, a curious eyebrow raised.

Taeyeon was looking back at the pair with a smug grin on her face and just gave the younger girl a playful wink in response to her silent inquiry, earning an eye-roll from her best friend. Fany then subtly pointed her finger towards the other end of the table to which Taeyeon nodded before continuing to enjoy the night.

All the girls spent their last dinner in Las Vegas amid great food and exceptional company. They were to go back to Seoul the following evening so their managers gave them that day and the next to fully experience the city before they had to leave.

The night quickly turned raucous as being together was always a treat for all nine of them, and it was a very good call for them to reserve a private function room for themselves because they were sure that boisterous laughter, clanking utensils, and flying food would greatly inconvenience the other patrons of the restaurant.

The kid leader stood up and silently motioned to Sunny, who sat beside her, that she was going to the restroom. Sunkyu just gave an okay sign before returning her attention back to and laughed loudly at Hyoyeon and Sooyoung’s impromptu dance time.

The midget was drying her hands when a white envelope suddenly appeared in her line of sight. She looked up and smiled at the person beside her before taking it and inspecting its contents. Satisfied, she quickly placed it inside her pocket before looking back up at the younger girl.

“Thanks, Seobaby! You and Fany are the best! I owe you one.”

The maknae smiled. “It was our pleasure, Unnie. I wish you the best of luck!”

“I sent you the details via our private chat, Unnie, so just take a look at it before you leave later.”

Taeyeon smiled gratefully and nodded as she embraced the youngest in an affectionate side hug before patting her , leading them back inside their room. The two separated as soon as they reached the table.

Taeyeon settled back down on her seat and instinctively looked across the table, immediately capturing her Sooyeon’s gentle gaze that was centered on her. The two shared a sweet smile, lost in their own moment, when suddenly Jessica yelped, her face predictably turning crimson.

Fany, who heard her, asked what the matter was but was quickly dismissed with a shake of the head, although the brunette was visibly fighting a coy smile from appearing on her face. Stephanie glanced at the eldest but didn’t find anything out of the ordinary so she just shrugged it off and went back to watching her girls goof off.

Little did the others know what was actually happening under the table, with the midget deftly caressing the younger woman’s calves sensuously with her foot, the other trying hard to bite back a moan.

The day was surely turning into a day full of memories for them.

After dinner, Sunkyu and Hyoyeon led the group outside.

“Let’s head back to the hotel bar for some drinks! Everybody game?” Almost all the girls nodded, cheering excitedly as they headed towards their manager who had the car waiting for them.

The girls were giggling and eyeing each other eagerly, unbeknownst to a certain Ice Princess who was obliviously allowing herself to be led near the side of the road.

One could only imagine the brunette’s surprise when a sports car suddenly screeched to a halt in front of her. The door instantly opened and, before Jessica could even scream or comprehend what was happening, she felt someone push her inside the vehicle, the sound of the door slamming shut resonating in her ears before the car drove away.

“You guys know that she’ll kill us for doing this to her, right?”

Sooyoung crossed her arms and smirked. “She’ll get over it.”

Jung Sooyeon was, to put it simply, shocked.

“YOU! You freaking planned this?!”

Kim Taeyeon just smirked as she kept her eyes on the road, not bothering to answer the obvious. Jessica, still too stunned to fully grasp the situation she was in, just scoffed in disbelief and scrambled to buckle herself up, choosing to stay silent and stew for a while to get her heart to stop pounding from the suddenness of – whatever this was.

Both women had been silent for several minutes, Taeyeon opting to leisurely drive around the city for a while to ease up on her own nerves before they arrive at their destination, and also to give Jessica time to compose herself since she knew that the Ice Princess was still upset. The brunette didn’t bode well with out-of-the-blue events.

“Where are you taking me, Taeyeon?”

Well, the midget was glad that, at the very least, Jessica wasn’t yelling at her.

“Just wait and see, Princess.”

Jessica sighed and massaged her forehead, a small smile appearing on her face. After she’d calmed down somewhat, she actually found everything to be quite amusing.

“Is kidnapping me really necessary, Taengoo? Can’t you just, I don’t know, ask me properly instead if I wanted to go out with you?”

The kid leader laughed, her free hand reaching for one of Jessica’s before kissing it briefly, the latter blushing as she pouted.

“Where’s the fun in that? When else can you say that you’ve been abducted by a devilishly charming idol while in Vegas?” That earned her a slap on the shoulder. Taeyeon just laughed again.

“And the kids really wanted to help out. Heavily insisted, to be honest. I didn’t have the heart to deny them of their happiness.” The sarcasm wasn’t lost, obviously, and the younger woman just rolled her eyes knowing that the girls most likely forced their ideas on their leader.

“Ugh, you guys scared the crap out of me! And whoever pushed me better have her will ready because she is definitely dead.” Taeyeon chuckled and tightened her grip on Jessica’s hand as she spotted their destination was right around the corner.

“Yah. They really put some thought into this. Aren’t you happy that they love you enough to plan something as crazy as a kidnapping scene to get you on a date with me? Well, it was either this or a body bag.”

The brunette scoffed and shook her head. Their members were really something else. She was just relieved that there were no cucumbers involved. Jessica wouldn’t put it past them to not threaten her with the vegetable as some sort of weapon to make her do their bidding.

“We’re here, Sica-ya. Let’s go.”

Jessica snapped out of her thoughts as Taeyeon tugged on her hand to get her attention before getting out of the car and handing the keys to the valet. A bellhop kindly opened the door for the brunette, the midget’s outstretched hand waiting for her as soon as she stepped out.

“The Strat? You made reservations here?”

Taeyeon threw a playful wink at the younger woman before leading her to the elevator for the SkyPod and pressed the button that’d take them to one of the top floors. Jessica faced the midget as soon as they entered, excited curiosity in her eyes.

“But you were with me the whole day. When did you get the time to arrange this?”

The older woman chuckled as she wound her arm around the other girl’s waist, pulling her closer and kissing her temple.

“I had help,” Taeyeon said ambiguously while Jessica furrowed her eyebrows. Her eyes widened when it finally hit her.

“Steph and Hyunnie?” Taeyeon smiled and nodded.

“So they didn’t really go out shopping? They were late for dinner because they went here?” The midget nodded again. Jessica shook her head and giggled.

“You really do know how to inconvenience others, Miss Kim. I hope they’re getting paid for their services.” Taeyeon grinned and tightened her hold on the younger woman.

“Minor details. And like I said, they insisted. You’re more than worth it, Sooyeon.”

Jessica shivered as Taeyeon whispered her name, their gazes locked. The brunette felt her face heating up as the older woman leaned her head closer and kissed the side of before backing away just as the doors opened.

The rest of the night was a blur for the couple. The two drank enough just for a light buzz to settle in but were still sober enough to fully appreciate the view the tower offered while relishing the other’s company.

It was already late into the night and the area of the observation deck where they were situated was mostly devoid of any other occupants, the majority hanging out inside the lounge.

Being able to go out together in public was a very rare occurrence even when they were still officially together, so Taeyeon wanted to take the chance and make use of the time they’d been given to show Jessica that, despite being miles away from their home-country but chances of them being recognized were still possible, she wasn’t afraid to show her off to other people anymore.

Jessica knew that it took much from her Taengoo just to show even the smallest amount of PDA, and she couldn’t be happier that Taeyeon went out of her comfort zone just to be able to bring her out on a planned date.

She was honestly worried that the midget was only pushing herself for her sake, but as the night progressed, Taeyeon was nothing short of attentive towards her, the perfect gentlewoman. Jessica just wanted to jump into the other girl’s arms and shower her with all the love she could give but was still hesitant and fearful that it may drive her away again.

It was difficult to fully let go of all her insecurities, but seeing how Taeyeon was trying her hardest to prove that she could compromise between time spent together and the need for personal space, Jessica couldn’t help but fall even deeper for the older woman. She could see and feel that Taeyeon felt the same way, and it made the brunette want to also do better for her.

“Are you cold?”

Jessica looked towards the woman she loved beside her and shook her head but leaned heavily into Taeyeon’s embrace anyway.

“Thank you for tonight, Taengoo. Being here with you feels so surreal, I don’t want it to ever end.”

Taeyeon adjusted their positions, bodies facing the other as she pulled Jessica closer by the waist, their faces only inches away from each other.

“Thank you for putting up with me all these years, Sica-ya. I know that we won’t be able to do this often, but at least know that I’ll try harder to make time for us, to cater to your needs, to – “

Jessica placed a finger on Taeyeon’s lips to silence her. She smiled at the other’s confused face, her hand moving from the older woman’s lips to cup her cheek, caressing it softly.

“I love you, Kim Taeyeon.”

Taeyeon couldn’t help but gape. Couldn’t help tearing up slightly. The three words that she took for granted for years, she finally heard again after almost a year since Jessica asked for time. Who knew that hearing them after so long would ease her heart so much?

“Sooyeon-ah…”

Along with those words, Taeyeon threw caution to the wind and finally claimed the lips from which they came from, the very lips she craved for so dearly.

Being around Jessica but unable to kiss her, to make love to her, was agonizing. A necessary sacrifice since she wanted to respect the younger woman’s wishes. But Sooyeon was worth every damn sacrifice Taeyeon had to make, their lips melding together proof that everything they’d been through, everything they’d said and done, was worth every bit the wait.

“You make me so happy, Jung Sooyeon. I love you so much. Please… Please be mine again. I need you to be mine again,” Taeyeon begged as she cupped Jessica’s face firmly, their foreheads touching, afraid that she’d move away and leave.

Jessica clutched onto Taeyeon’s hands tightly, tears streaming down her face. Overwhelming affection for the older woman flowed through her at that moment as she nodded her head.

“I was always yours, Taengoo. Forever yours. I love you,” Jessica whispered, once again being devoured by the only woman who had the power to consume her heart, mind, and soul unconditionally.

“Girls! Congratulations on getting an all-kill on the first week of your new song’s release! Years after your debut, you girls still manage to retain your number one spot even amongst newer groups. Do you have any kind of inspiration for all the hard work you’ve been putting through to achieve such success? Tiffany-ssi?”

Fany took the mic from Sunny and faced the Emcee, eye-smiles in place.

“Uh, I guess it’s different for all the girls, but one thing we have in common is that we strive hard because we love and enjoy what we do. It’s our dream. We work on both our strengths and weaknesses because we want to present the best we can be for those who love and appreciate us.”

The Emcee nodded and thanked Tiffany while glancing down at his cue cards.

“Do any of you have any specific people or a specific someone in mind that inspires you?”

Some of the girls took turns in answering, enough to appease the Emcee and the viewers.

“Our families, of course. Also, very close friends who give us strength when we need them.”

“My family and my members always serve as great inspiration for me.”

“Our Managers who are always there to support us. We can’t function properly without them, thus making them a big part of our overall success.”

“My dog. Haha! But seriously, my family’s a given. But I also would like to mention a close “friend” of mine that’s made a huge impact on my life. She’s my best friend and confidante, an important person. She keeps me grounded. I don’t usually say things like these but, ‘I love you, friend!’”

The Emcee laughed, slightly surprised at the leader’s detailed answer, but not really enough to make a big deal out of it so he continued the questioning since their time was limited.

“I’m sure your friend will be happy that you remembered her, Taeyeon-ssi. Now, let’s move on…”

“Friend, huh? I’m really curious as to who this important friend of yours is since you were bold enough to announce that you love her during a live broadcast. You just broke a lot of your fans’ hearts.”

Taeyeon smiled, firmly hugging the arms that surreptitiously wrapped around her waist to prevent the person behind her from moving away.

“You know her very well, actually. Pretty face, gorgeous body, kissable lips. Oh, did I mention great in bed, too?”

“Yah, byuntae!!”

The midget snickered, quickly turning around to engulf the other woman in her warm embrace before she started another slapping spree. Her bruises from when she scared the other girl a few days prior were still visible.

“That’s the closest I can do to announce to the world that I love you, Sica-ya. It’s not much, but I felt satisfied when I said it.”

Jessica smiled widely, eyes twinkling at the amount of adoration she could see in the older woman’s gaze. Solely for her.

“You don’t need to do anything more to prove how much you love me, Taengoo. You never fail to show it to me every day, that’s more than enough. Thank you. Thank you for loving me, Taeyeon-ah.”

“You’re what my heart yearns for, Sooyeon. My heart will always want you. Always and forever.”

Taeyeon took Jessica’s left hand and kissed the promise ring that once again adorned her finger.

“Always and forever, Taengoo.”
