Petty Past

Don’t Be Happy

“Hello?” Yongsun said after answering her phone. She gasped and nodded as if the person on the phone was in front of her. “Ah—de.” She said immediately after realizing they couldn’t see her.

Hyejin just stared at her unnie while she took the call. Yongsun-unnie looked like she was holding in the excitement the phone call gave. She raised an eyebrow as she noticed her respond politely and said goodbye politely.

Yongsun finally hung up her phone and gave Hyejin a big smile. “Guess what?”

“We won a lottery?” Hyejin asked playfully.

“I GOT THE ROLE!!!” Yongsun jumped Hyejin and hugged her tight.

Hyejin just laughed. She was glad her unnie got the part she wanted. “Yay!!” She screamed back in excitement.

After the excitement died down, they were now sitting in front of each other.

“When does your first shooting start?” Hyejin asked curiously.

Yongsun shook her head. “Not until next month, I have to meet the rest of the cast first and then I have to go to the script rehearsals.”

Hyejin nodded. “Well, to celebrate let’s go eat!!”

Yongsun grinned. “I’ll pay!”

Hyejin jumped up and started a little dance. Yongsun laughed but stood up and danced with Hyejin.

Moonbyul’s Apartment:

“Hello?” Wheein said as she answered her phone.

Moonbyul looked on, but couldn’t help but frown a little. They were cuddling and watching a movie, but was interrupted by Wheein’s phone.

As she looked at Wheein, her frown deepened as she saw her girlfriend look a little sad at whoever called.

“No, no it’s an honor. I would gladly do it.” Wheein said smiling this time.

She politely said her goodbye and hung up. She turned to her side and realized Moonbyul staring at her waiting for explanation.

“That was the producer of ‘Then and Again’” Wheein said.

Moonbyul didn’t like how the phone call sounded. “You didn’t get the part?”

Wheein shook her head. “But! I did get a part!”

Moonbyul smiled at the younger girl’s optimism. “Which one?”

“I’ll be playing Jin Sehyeon, your present girlfriend.” Wheein said, with a smile still on her face.

Moonbyul couldn’t help but be happy for her. Seeing the dimple on her cheek made Moonbyul’s days brighter every time it revealed itself.

Moonbyul smiled warmly at Wheein. “I knew you could get a role!” She suddenly pouted. “I’m sorry you couldn’t get the main role though…”

Wheein giggled a little at the older girl’s pout. “It’s ok, you didn’t get the role you wanted in your first drama right?”

Moonbyul nodded sullenly. “I guess you’re right, but I know you’ll do well in this drama.”

Wheein wrapped her arms around her girlfriend’s waist, putting her head on Moonbyul’s chest. Moonbyul heart swelled at the action but didn’t waste a second in hugging her back.

Three Days Later:

Today was the day that all the cast of ‘Then and Again’ met each other. Both Moonbyul and Solar were individually curious as to who their acting counterpart was.

For Solar, she knew it was going be a talented famous actress, because she knew the producers did not settle for less. Also, an actress who would be willing to play a queer role, it would be hard for a rookie actress to act a role that wasn’t easily accepted by everyone. Most of the actresses in Korea were all straight from what she knows.

For Moonbyul, she wondered who showed enough potential to take the role away from Wheein. She wasn’t resentful, she respected the producers choices, but just incredibly curious as to who stole their heart in the auditions.

.

.

.

.

.

Moonbyul had picked Wheein up and they were on their way to their cast meeting.

“Did you sleep well?” Moonbyul asked as she took a right turn.

Wheein smiled and nodded. “Like a baby.”

My baby.” Moonbyul cheekily grinned at Wheein.

Although Wheein’s heart beat fast at the silver-haired girl’s comment, she made a face that told Moonbyul she was being cringey.

Moonbyul just laughed, with her unoccupied hand she cautiously intertwined her fingers with Wheein’s.

Moonbyul didn’t notice, but Wheein was staring intently at their joined hands with a smile. She loved the feeling of Moonbyul’s hands. They were soft and fit perfectly with hers. And Wheein loved the way she did it too, shyly but firmly. The men she dated previously would grab her hand with confidence, like they assumed Wheein definitely wanted to hold their hands. Granted, most of the time she did, but there was times their hands were so sweaty and rough, she didn’t care for holding their hands. Moonbyul, on the other hand, would cautiously and shyly take her hand, like she was silently measuring if Wheein wanted to hold her hand. Of course, Wheein always did.

Wheein looked up and realized the car was parked and Moonbyul was grinning at her.

“Daydreaming?” Moonbyul asked playfully.

Wheein blushed at the truth. She was and it was about Moonbyul. She shook her head and denied the truth. “Just thinking…”

“Very deeply~” Moonbyul pursed her lips. “About today?”

Wheein shook her head, she blushed didn’t want to worry Moonbyul, so she had to tell the truth. “About you…”

It was Moonbyul’s turn to blush. “Oh.”

Wheein giggled and rugged on her hand. “Let’s go, we don’t want to be late~” she unfortunately let go of Moonbyul’s hand and left the car. She waited for Moonbyul to follow after her. Moonbyul followed after, not waiting a second more.

Moonbyul sneakily took Wheein’s hands. “I know we said we’ll keep this between us, but since we’re in the same company, I don’t think they’ll think anything if I just hold your hand.”

Wheein let out a dimpled smile and nodded. “That’s fine with me.”

They were in the MBC building and heading to where the cast was meeting. Moonbyul was grinning at Wheein, poking her dimpled cheek. “Why are you so cute~?”

Wheein shyly hit Moonbyul’s finger away. “Stop it, and open the door.”

Moonbyul just laughed and opened the door for Wheein. “In you go my lady~”

Wheein’s dimpled showed again. “Why, thank you Moonbyul-ssi!”

Moonbyul gasped and put a hand to her chest. “Moonbyul-ssi?”

Wheein stuck out her tongue and went inside. Moonbyul finally looked away from Wheein and immediately color drained her face. Moonbyul was looking at the face of a person she never wanted to see again.

Solar looked up as she felt eyes on her, she immediately regretted as she looked into the eyes of the person she didn’t know she missed.

Wheein noticed the change in Moonbyul’s face, she tugged on the hand she was once again holding. “Byul?”

Moonbyul’s anger dissipated as she heard Wheein’s voice. Her expression softer and she smiled at Wheein. “I’ll tell you later.”

Wheein pursed her lips and nodded. She’s never seen that angry expression from her girlfriend, and it worried her.

Moonbyul turned to the cast and smiled.

It’s fake.’ Wheein thought. She knew the smile on Moonbyul’s face was fake, only she could tell because Moonbyul’s genuine smile always reached her eyes. This smile did not.

Solar’s POV:

I felt a little out of place in a room full of actresses and actors, but I politely smiled and bowed to each of them. I’m going to need all the help I can get and being nice to my seniors will help me.

I heard the door opened and as it opened cheerful laughter came with it. It made me look up.

I froze.

Byul…

I missed her, but I didn’t see anything but anger and sadness mixed together in her eyes. She looked back at me without faltering, until she suddenly looked away. Byul looked at the girl next to her, which I just realized was Jung Wheein. I saw her say something to the singer, and give a smile to the shorter girl. I knew I had no right, but a slight jealously rose up in me. Obviously Wheein was someone that was close to Moonbyul, but I had no idea of how close they were. I was jealous of their apparent friendship, one that disappeared from Moonbyul and I.

I knew I was staring, but I couldn’t look away.

Moonbyul looked back up and her lips turned upward into a smile. If I didn’t know any better, I would think the smile on her face was genuine. But unfortunately I knew better, and it was an act.

Moonbyul and Jung Wheein had come forward, and their joined hands wasn’t missed by me. “Hello.” Moonbyul started with a polite tone.

“H-Hi.” I stuttered, I silently cursed myself. It’s been so long that I’ve heard her voice directed towards me, I couldn’t help but make a fool of myself. I bowed and smiled nervously. I didn’t forget to bow to Jung Wheein, who smiled an actual genuine smile.

“I’m Jung Wheein.” She let go of Moonbyul’s hand and extended her hand towards me. Which I took and shook gently.

“I know, Hwasa and I are a big fan.” I smiled widely, thinking of my dongsaeng.

“Moonbyul-ssi…nice to see you again.” I said cautiously.

Her fake smile made another appearance. “You too.”

Ki-Hyun, the producer came near. “Moonbyul! You’re here!” He gave Moonbyul a one-arm hug and smiled seeing Wheein. I could tell Moonbyul and him were very close from the way the producer addressed her.

“Wheein-ssi, it’s great to see you too!” Wheein let out a dimpled smile and bowed.

“Solar-ssi, you as well!” He also smiled at me. He gently put a hand on my shoulder and a hand on Moonbyul’s shoulder. “Well, you guys should get to know each other, since you two are the main characters.”

I gulped, that was unexpected. I glanced at Moonbyul and saw frustration in her eyes, but she kept up her fake smile.

“I hope we get along.” She bowed to me with her fake smile still intact.

I bowed back to her. “Y-Yes of course.”

Ki-Hyun looked at me confusedly, “I thought you guys used to be friends, Byul-ah?”

I opened and closed , not knowing what to say. “We…”

“We were…Solar-ssi had become busy with her life as an idol, so we lost contact.” Moonbyul interrupted with her fake smile.

Ki-Hyun patted Moonbyul on the back and rested his hand on her shoulder. “That’s understandable, well it wouldn’t hurt to get re-acquainted, now who’s hungry?”

Wheein piped up this time. “Sir, I apologize but we won’t be able to stay, our CEO wants us to come for a meeting.”

Ki-Hyun looked disappointed. I felt the same, even though Moonbyul probably won’t even spare me a second glance, being in the same room as her was enough for me. Right now, I stared at Moonbyul as subtle as I could. I buried the feelings long ago, but I knew I missed her. Her silver hair served her well, it emphasized how pale she was. Her skin still as flawless as I remember. Her long eyelashes that fluttered over her dark chocolate eyes. And her full lips that thinned when her wide smile appears. I only stared for a few seconds, because I knew her features well.

Although, she showed another fake smile towards me, an apologetic smile she sent towards Ki-Hyun was very genuine. “I’m sorry, he said we need to be there.” Moonbyul said to Ki-Hyun.

I quietly bowed to Wheein, who was the only one who acknowledged my goodbye. I smiled as I shook her hand again and left them with their goodbyes. “I hope we get along.” She smiled back and nodded.

She happily waved a goodbye as she left with Moonbyul. Moonbyul didn’t even spare me a glance before she left the room. Both girls still holding hands as they left.

I turned to smile at the actress in front me. “Of course, me and my member are a fan of you.” I continued my conversations with actresses and actors with a hidden feeling only described as regret in me.

Wheein’s POV:

I made up the lie that our CEO needs us. I could kind of sense that Moonbyul wouldn’t be up to eating with the rest of the cast. Currently, we went to a restaurant on our own. I stared at Moonbyul as she continuously stuffed . Although I was painfully curious with her relationship with Solar-ssi, I couldn’t help but admire her at the moment. With full of food, she looked like a happy hamster. Though she gets mad easily, she was also easily distracted from what I learned.

I laughed as she got sauce on her chin. I grabbed a napkin and wiped her chin. She swallowed and grinned.

I laughed even harder when I saw chili pepper flakes on her teeth.

“What?” She asked.

I took a spoonful and chewed. I swallowed and grinned at her. She understood right away, and closed .

“Sorry…” She said shyly.

I shook my head, “Are you going to tell me now or are you going to keep stuffing your mouth?”

She grabbed a napkin and dabbed . She gave me a small smile. “Keep stuffing my mouth?”

I raised an eyebrow at her.

“Fine, fine…” She sighed.

I sat up and waited for her to start her story.

Moonbyul’s POV:

Flashback:

I ran out school, looking for the person that always waits for me. I joined a dancing club, and they happen every Thursday of each week after class. Even though, it’s an hour long my best friend always waits for me.

“Unnie~!” I ran into her.

“Yah! Get off me!” She said playfully shoving me.

I shook my head. “You know you love it~”

She made a face. “I hope your greasiness goes away with age.”

I laughed. “I’ll always be like this, like I’ll always love you unnie~” I grinned as I let go of her.

She blushed and started hitting my arm.

I blocked as much as I could, but she kept hitting me. “Okay, okay…I’ll stop for now.” I surrendered.

“For now?” She said with a frown.

I ignored that question. “I’m hungry, Yongsun-unnie~”

Yongsun rolled her eyes and started walking away. “Go get your own food.”

“Unnie~ Wait for me~” I said as I grabbed her hand. I loved holding her hand. It was a small thing, but it was very intimate especially since Yongsun-unnie wasn’t very affectionate. The first time I held her hand, she pulled away and hit me. But as time went on, she let me hold it and she would sometimes take mine before I would even think of it. It made me wonder if she felt the same.

“Spicy rice cakes?” She asked without looking at me.

I nodded, and grinned.

“Alright, let’s go find Hyejin.” She said.

After we ate spicy rice cakes, we had to take Hyejin to the train station. She was going to go visit her parents for spring break.

.

.

.

.

.

We waved happily as Hyejin’s train left the station. Yongsun-unnie and I laughed as we saw a rare image of Hyejin acting cute through the window. We decided to stay until we couldn’t see the train anymore.

I watched her as she watched the train leave. As I looked at her, the feelings that stirred inside scared me at how deep they were. I knew I had a little crush, the first time I met her…but at this moment…the butterflies in my stomach fluttered as I saw the bright smile on her face.

Before she could notice me staring, I stood up first and held out my hand to her. “Let’s go?”

She giggled and took my hand. “What a gentlewoman~”

I rolled my eyes but my lips betrayed me as they stayed upwards.

.

.

.

.

.

We were near enough the dorm, that I could see the entrance to the building.

“I hate you~” She said playfully with a pout on her face.

“You love me~” I responded as I grinned at her.

“I do love you~” She said as she rolled her eyes. My eyebrows raised at her response. Usually, she would just push me away.

Suddenly, my legs started to feel heavy. I let go of the hand I was holding the whole walk back, and stopped walking.

Yongsun-unnie didn’t stop, so she was confused as she turned around to look at me curiously. “Byul?”

I bit my lip as I kept my eyes on the floor. Maybe because she said she loves me…or maybe because I’ve kept these feelings way too long. I felt the need to say what I felt.

“Byul…What’s wrong?” She asked as she lifted my chin to make me look at her.

I couldn’t look her in the eyes. “Unnie…”

“Yes?” She gave me a comforting smile, patiently waiting for what I would say.

I took a step back, and took a nervous breath. “Unnie…” I repeated.

She giggled softly. “What is it, Moon Byulyi?”

I let out a frustrated sigh, frustrated at myself for being a coward. “I-I…” I gathered my courage and forced myself to look her in the eye. “I l-like you…”

Yongsun-unnie giggled. “I like you too~” She said patting my cheek lightly.

I shook my head, “N-No, like I’d-like-to-date-you like you.”

Yongsun’s eyes widened in realization. “Byul…”

“Y-You don’t have to answer me now…b-but I just couldn’t keep it to myself anymore…” My shoulder slumped slightly. “You don’t have to like me either…but I’ll give you time to think…”

Yongsun didn’t say anymore as she looked at me worriedly.

I gave her a small smile. “Let’s go inside?” I headed towards the building hurriedly, scared of how she would respond. I heard her follow after me, but slowly walking behind me.

.

.

.

.

.

Four days passed, since I confessed to Yongsun-unnie. What was worse was she hadn’t even tried to talk to me, in fact, I think she was trying to ignore me. There were no calls, no texts, not even a hello when I passed by her when I was walking past her while I was with other friends.

I gave her space, because I wanted for her to at least think about it. Even if she didn’t want to be with me, I gave her space to at least process the fact that I was a lesbian. But I missed her so much. I wanted to just go to her and tell her, “Ha! It was joke, I don’t like you like that!” Just so we could be back to how we were.

But I had pride, and I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself for being a coward.

I just missed her so much.

.

.

.

.

.

I couldn’t take it anymore…

I decided to take it all back, I wanted—no…needed to by her side again. I missed her too much to be away for too long.

I knew she would be coming out the school’s singing club by now. I left the dorm and went looking for her. After thirty minutes of searching, I saw her standing next to a tree. I smiled as I decided to walk towards her.

My smile dropped as I got closer. Yongsun was talking to Jongdae, a member of the singing club. Jongdae was smiling at Yongsun, and looking at her expectantly. Yongsun-unnie just stared at him for a moment, and what she did next broke my heart to pieces.

Suddenly, she pulled Jongdae, and their lips were now touching, Yongsun’s eyes were tightly closed. It was short but it seem like the kiss went on for a long time.

I was frozen to where I was standing, not knowing what I should do, or what I should be feeling.

Yongsun finally saw me, her eyes widening at the sight of me.

I had difficulty swallowing as she looked back at me with a worried gaze. She took a step towards me, and it was like a push to make me move.

“Byul…” She said softly, with a look of guilt on her face.

I shook my head, and before she could say anymore I turned and ran away as fast as I could…as far as I could.

I kept running, until my legs screamed for me to stop. Through my tear-blurred eyes, I wasn’t sure but I must’ve ran all the way to the park. I sat on the bench nearby, angrily wiping the salty tears that fell on my face.

If she didn’t want me, she should’ve just said so! Instead of letting me suffer for days, not knowing if she was going to be disgusted by me, or wanted to end our friendship all together.

I let out a frustrated groan as I hid my face behind my hands.

.

.

.

.

.

After calming down, I went back to my room. I put my headphones on, and let myself get lost in music. I lost track of time, but I realized someone was knocking on the door. I took one earbud and listened to see who it was at the door.

“Byul…Please open the door…” I heard her say softly behind the door. She knocked again.

“I’m sorry…Please open the door…” I heard her try again, I could hear the desperation in her voice.

I clenched my jaw as I put my earbud back into my ear. I increased the volume and let the music blast my ears. It blocked me from hearing anything else. I didn’t want to hear anything else.

I didn’t want to see her. Especially not while I looked like this.

I didn’t want to hear what she had to say…

I didn’t need to…

***Flashback Ends***

“What happened next?” Wheein asked looking completely absorbed by the story. Although, I could feel the leftover anger from telling my story, I couldn’t help it when I let out a little chuckle.

“You’re nosy.” I said tapping the tip of her nose.

Wheein pouted. “I’m your girlfriend.”

I let happy feelings take over as she said girlfriend. I gave her a small sad smile. “I ignored her for the rest of spring break, and I called my parents to transfer me to another school.”

“You didn’t let her explain at all??” Wheein asked, surprised.

I shook my head. “It might seem petty, but I was hurt…she was my…first love” I looked at her reaction, but she just seemed to be patiently listening. “…and my best friend.” I put down my chopsticks, and kept my gaze on the grilling meat. “Her rejecting me wasn’t what hurt the most…it was the silence and the way I was rejected.”

Wheein lifted up my chin, I looked into her eyes. They looked soft, and kind. She gave me a comforting smile. She nodded gently. “I understand…But will you let your past get in the way of your work?”

I sighed and straightened my back. “You know me so well…”

Wheein’s hand traveled down and held my hand. “I love you.”

My eyes widened at the three words. She’s never said them to me. She would say them playfully from time to time, but this time the words seem so serious. My heart swelled hearing her say them.

Wheein blushed, let go of my hand and looked down after the lack of response from me. I quickly shook out of my daze, and took her hand back in mine. “I love you too...” I smiled as she immediately looked back up with a surprised look.

“Is it that surprising?” I asked amusedly.

Wheein shook her head violently. “I-I can’t really help it…”

“You shouldn’t be…” I said as I moved to sit next to her, cupping her face in my hands. “Because you are the one that make my days brighter and better.” I gave her a smile, trying to convey my seriousness.

She blushed as she looked at me, she smiled as she leaned closer. When she was inches away, I closed my eyes and closed the leftover distance between us.

Our lips met gently, and I could feel my heart jumping in my chest. I could feel the softness of her lips, as they moved with mine. This was the longest our kiss has lasted, and I could feel my face heating up. I finally opened my eyes as she pulled away first to breathe, she leaned her head against mine. A soft smile was on her lips, and I couldn’t help but smile back.

I was glad we had decided to get a private room for ourselves, so we could be ourselves while we eat. Although, I’m positive there was currently no eating that went on a few seconds ago.

“So…” Wheein started, a blush on her dimpled cheek.

I fell a little bit more, seeing a small smile on her lips. “So?”

“About the drama…” Wheein cautiously said.

I sighed, bit my lip and slowly nodded. “I know, it was just some leftover feelings that came through since I haven’t seen her in a long time.”

Wheein nodded in understanding. “You’ll be okay?”

I looked down but smiled. I was always amazed at how caring and understanding this girl sitting in front of me was. “With you there, I will be.” I grinned widely at her.

“Uggh! Always with the greasiness!!” Wheein complained. I just laughed as I took the burning meat off the grill.
