The almost-summer evening was a nice one, the sun was shining behind soft, wispy clouds, birds were singing, and leaves had been rustling in the cool breeze. The clouds all looked as if they were about to dump tons of water onto the dry earth, but they didn't yet, luckily. A boy named Yuichiro Hyakuya with loose raven hair was walking down the sidewalk in his nice neighborhood at this time, walking home from the library that he went to after school to study for the big test the next day. He'd known that if he were to come home, he'd go straight up to his room and opt Mika, his best friend since preschool, to go with him for grocery shopping... Grocery shopping... Yes, you heard that right. Currently, both his father and mother had full-time jobs and couldn't do much at home... That's where Yu came in, to take care of the house, food, and other casual errands while his parents tried to take care of their own overwhelming debts, him, his schooling, and any money towards bills. They had insisted on him not working until college, which they were trying to save up for- however he did get a job at a coffee shop recently, and hadn't told them till about a week ago... They just wanted him to savor every moment of his childhood while he was still there since they knew he'd be leaving for college soon, considering it was only one year away after he finished his junior year.

He wasn't sure how far he'd go, but he'd study hard and perhaps go living abroad, and he would be happy that his parents might for once be able to take care of themselves. That was the main reason he'd be leaving. They were so selfless and worked so hard at making a good life for him, paying for everything he did, always keeping up with the clothes and shoes and room theme that would evolve with his adolescent self quickly. Yu never ever told them about anything, never even asked, ever, yet they still knew somehow, and spoiled him rotten, even in the state they were in. He knew that they loved him so much and he was their everything, but he'd be back often for that reason. They still had his sister, Akane to care for, but she was only starting middle school now. She had a few years to go before college, and Yuichiro wanted to allow the three of them to continue their lives, his parents only spoiling one child instead of two. It was complicated... Yuichiro sighed and arrived home, unlocking the door to his home and walking in slowly, turning on the kitchen light and calling for Akane.

"Akane! Did you get your homework done?" He yelled as he set down all of his books and bags in the doorway, to take up to his room once dinner was done. "Yea! Where were you?? You've been gone forever..." Yuichiro went to the refrigerator to see what he could make for dinner when Akane was running downstairs to greet him. "I went to the library to study. Hey, how does curry sound?" Akane suddenly gasped and ran up to Yu, jumping up and down a couple of times before running to his other side. "Yes! Yes! Can I help? I want to learn how to cook! Actually, I could win a contest with this for my cooking club I joined recently! I know it wouldn't be much money I'd win, but it could help with something, Yu! Oh please teach me..." She whined and held her hands together and close to pleadingly. Yu laughed quietly to himself and got out some of the vegetables that he put in the curry, agreeing to her request. "Oh Akane, you can use that money for something like a new outfit or nice shoes maybe?" Akane looked at him and quickly shook her head. "No... I was thinking I could put it towards grocery money?" She smiled and helped him finish up the collecting of the ingredients... "Akane, don't worry about it, okay? My job is enough for that, and mom and dad are always helping of course..." He couldn't help but feel sad over that, and Akane noticed his sigh afterwards. "I know, but I think that money that they use should go towards themselves since they don't get to do anything other than work all of the time..." Yuichiro smiled. "You have a good heart, Akane. You're very selfless, and that's a good quality to have."

At that very moment, Yu's phone rang and he picked it up quickly to see who it was. "Who?" Akane stood on her toes and peered over at his phone screen.

"Ah... It's Shinoa. Mind if I take it? I won't be long, I promise." Akane shook her head, smiling. Yu grinned at her thankfully and took the call, placing his phone to his ear. "Hey Shinoa, what's up?"

"Hi.. Not much actually. Mitsu and I are at my house and we were planning on inviting the boys. Wanna come?"

"Uh... It's a little late for a school night?"

"Mmm. Not for long, Yu. Mitsu is inviting Kimizuki, and then she'll ask Yoichi and Narumi. You can invite Mika if you want?" Yuichiro perked up at Mika's name. "I'll think about it, and I'll definitely grab Mika if he's not busy. What are you guys going to do over there?" Shinoa shifted over the phone and said a quick and unknown word to Mitsuba before returning to the call. "Well... Games, I guess." Yu shrugged, forgetting that she couldn't see him and glanced over at Akane, who was still looking hopeful. "I might a little later, I just have to prepare some dinner for Akane and me right now." Shinoa giggled. "Ah big brother Yu, always so caring for his sister!" Mitsuba shouted from the background after that... "Sister complex!" The girls laughed lightly and Yuichiro sighed. "Oh shut up.. Talk to you later." He hung up and turned back to Akane, continuing to help her prepare the curry which he was already excited for.

Soon enough, the curry was done, and Akane squealed and ran to the table, allowing me to serve tonight. "What do you want to watch? Sports? Cartoons?" Akane was bouncing in her seat, waiting for the curry to arrive at the table. "Sports! Oh! Oh! And Yu, can you invite Mika-chan?? I want him to taste this food!" Yu laughed and sighed, setting down the curry in front of Akane, teasing her with the food. "We'll have to wait, is that okay?"

"For crying out loud, Yu! Just shut it and invite him so we can eat!" She looked very desperate... Yu felt almost sorry for the kid and slowly took out his phone to call Mikaela. She whined and hit her head against the table in agony, waiting as patiently as she could. Mika picked up right away. "Y-Yu-chan!" Mika spoke happily. "Mika! Hey, wanna come over? It's getting a little late but, I also had a question for you... Akane helped me to make curry and she wanted to invite you over!"

"Oh, curry! I love curry! I'll be over there in just a sec- let me.. Get dressed first, hah... I just finished my shower and I was going to get something to eat after that anyway, so I'll be right there!" Yu was happy to know that he liked curry... He'd make it more often, then. He laughed lightly. "Okay Mika, I'll talk to you soon?"

"Mhm!" Mika said and hung up the phone as Yu put his phone into his pocket and prepared another dish for Mika as they waited for him to arrive. Within 15 minutes, there was a knock on the door and Akane went over to answer it for Yu. "Mika!" He heard her call. "Come in! Yuu-chan is at the table." She grabbed Mikaela's hand and led him to a chair next to Yu. Huh... They were close to each other, their shoulders brushing together, while Akane sat at the opposite side of them, even though there were plenty of other chairs. She giggled and began eating to let them know that it was appropriate to eat.

"So... Mika, Shinoa invited me over later and told me to invite you, so we can go if you want, but if not then it's all good," Yu said after a few bites of curry, hoping Mika would choose to go with him. He wouldn't go if Mika wasn't coming along, but he's just really been wanting to do something with him lately anyway. "Sure, but when? Now?" Yu swallowed a mouthful of his curry and set down his silverware to check for texts. "Well, I don't have any messages but I think if we're going to go we should leave when dinner's eaten up. Akane... Want to come?" Akane smiled and giggled happily. "Nope! I realize that you boys need some romantic time alone, so I won't be that sister who drags her brother down, making sure his ity stays safe! ...Even though he's older! I love those shows... But they remind me that I should never be that way with you and your love!" Yu blushed intensely... "Are you referring to specific characters or-?" Akane shook her head. "Don't be silly Yu! I know that you and Mika are in love! I don't know if you guys have done anything like that yet but it'd be a great night, you know?" Mika was red too now, he tried to shift away from Yu slowly and asked the girl, "where did you get that from..?"

"Let me tell you..! A lot of my manga have that one boy who has a sister. It's pretty common! She always seems to slow them down though... I'll be the supporting character instead..! I just picked up that one boy might secretly be in love with the other, maybe not too sure, just acting as close friends or even like family, like you guys! But they're in love! That's got to be the case right? I don't know about Mika, but Yu, I thought you were into boys?"

"What?? I never said-!"

"Oh, but how come you always look at other boys kind of like you might be interested? It's always the cute ones too! I've never ever seen you act like that around any girls... And sometimes with boys, you get all flustered and shy so I just thought that maybe you did!" Yu covered his face as Mika was looking a bit surprised and concerned at the same time... "Akane... No, that's all wrong-!" Akane gasped and jumped up, bringing a fist close to her chest triumphantly since her dishes were now empty. "I'll go get those manga and show you, okay? It'll be proof! In the meantime, you can have your adorable awkward time! Too bad I can't see but don't hesitate on anything!" Akane giggled and ran up to her room innocently. "Never be fooled by her innocent acts... I forgot how many references she can give in a day..." Yu had his forehead against the table, letting his dark hair cover the rest of his face. "Y-Yu... Do you want to maybe go to Shinoa's place now..? While Akane is away?" Mika muttered to Yuichiro... Yu looked up and flushed harder as soon as he saw that Mika was still a little tinted too, but quickly nodded and began to stand. "Yes. Yes, let's go. Fast." He grabbed Mika's hand and made his way out the door. Akane had slinked back downstairs and giggled. "A little eager, huh?"

"Yu! You're finally here!" Mitsuba ran up to the boys, the whole mini squad already there- "Perfect timing, we're just about to start the next game." Shinoa calmly joined Mitsu and put her hand on her shoulder. "Yep! It's spin the bottle up next." Shinoa and Mitsuba wiggled their eyebrows at each other and broke into a giggling fit, dragging Yu and Mika over to the circle on the living room floor. "Listen up everyone! Mitsu and I are adding a little addition here, whoever is previous, has to sit on the chosen person's lap. If you refuse to any of this, you're out! Let's start, I'll go first." Shinoa spun the bottle and waited on her toes to see who it'd land on... "Mitsu! Hah, come here now." Mitsu stuck out her tongue but Shinoa crawled onto her quickly and planted a dramatic kiss on her lips. Mitsuba wiped and Shinoa giggled at her as she quickly batted at the bottle afterwards.

The bottle had told her to give Yoichi a kiss... Her pink face suddenly lost it's embarrassment as she took Yoichi into an embrace and kissed his forehead. "My son..." Yoichi giggled softly and spun it, patiently waiting... For the bottle to decide on Mika. Mika flushed only slightly but allowed Yoichi approach him. He bit his bottom lip and Yoichi quickly kissed Mika's cheek, grinning and returning to Kimizuki's side... Kimizuki seemed... A little bit jealous- and he tried to rest his fingers against Yoichi's, evidently hoping that no one would catch on. Yoichi giggled. Yu couldn't help feeling jealous too, however. He wanted to grab Mika's arm and take him away somewhere with only the two of them, he didn't want anyone else to ever touch him, anywhere, ever. It should only be him that- wait. Maybe- was... Was Akane right? Had Yu fallen for Mika? Just like that?? Yu looked away from the group and didn't even notice that the bottle landed on him until he saw that Mika grabbed his chin. Mika hovered above Yu, trying not to touch anywhere sensitive. He leaned forward and left a quick peck on Yu's lips. He flushed the hardest that Yu's ever seen him flush, and sat back down in his spot, avoiding any possible contact with Yu... "Hohoho... I think you two best stay out for the rest of this game, don't want to get a yandere spark in either one of you, huh?" Shinoa elbowed Yu with enough force to have him tip over, onto Mika. Of course.

Yu looked up at Mika as Mika looked down at him... They just stayed just like that for a little bit, staring into each other's eyes, neither having the guts to blush, move, or look away. "Oh you guys... Go on, we know what's gonna happen! You can come back once the game is over, okay?" Mitsuba did the moving for them. Mika blinked. "Yu..." He parted his lips slightly and leaned down. Yu leaned up enough to press his mouth against Mika's. Shinoa pumped her fist and Mitsuba giggled, Kimizuki smirked, Yoichi was shocked but excited... And Narumi casually let out a low laugh and fell backwards... Yu assumed he was drunk. Mika was bending so far over and it caused Yu smiled against his lips... They were so soft and desperate... Yu leaned farther up, pressing closer to Mika, going as far as to let his tongue slip out and brush it against Mika's lip. Yu flushed and pulled away before he allowed himself to do more. He hid his mouth behind his forearm to hide his flushing face, but not close enough to wipe anything off of his mouth. Mika blushed as well but just stared adoringly at Yuichiro. Yu crawled back over to him and swept him up carefully in his arms, despite being an inch or so shorter than him, and kissed him once more before bidding a farewell to his giddy friends, opening the door, and rushing out and into his car. "Mika... Look." Yu held him close and let him see the beautiful view before setting him in the car. "The stars are so pretty..." Mika sighed. "Do you... Like to stargaze?"

"Yes! I love stargazing..!" Mika said, in a daze by the stars. Yu couldn't help but notice how pretty his face looked in the moonlight, his blonde hair kissed by it, and his cerulean eyes speckled and lit up with the tiny and magnificent pricks of fire in the sky. Yu smiled and blushed, but he gently put Mika into the car, running around to the driver's seat and beginning to drive off. "Where are we going?"

"Somewhere." Was all Yu said.

Mika gasped as soon as any city light post faded from view, only the sky and the grass in sight. "No way!" He leaped out and began running as soon as Yu stopped the car, watching him. Mika found a spot in the grass and laid down in it, beckoning Yu over. "Oh Mika..." Yu sat down and stared at him, tears biting at his eyes. "I think I might be really deeply in love with you. Akane... She was right. I always loved you, more as a brother of sorts perhaps, but I've always sort of known it's been different. I've always felt the same whenever anyone else got close to you or touched you, and I always wanted to protect you and be there for you... Mikaela, you have the prettiest eyes and the most beautiful skin and hair of anyone I know... And your personality... Mika, you are so sweet and loving. So selfless and cheery, so... Kind, it makes my heart hurt whenever you aren't appreciated always as much as you should be. I don't know what I'd do without you... I know how sudden this is, but... I've had a crush on you for a while, and you were the only boy I ever dreamed of looking at... It's like, no matter how dumb this may sound, I'm not attracted to anyone at all other than you, and I feel it won't change. I realize this feeling now, only now... I understand what love like this feels like now, Mika... I sound like a crazy and cliche guy in a fantasy fairy tale, but I love you. If you aren't ready for a relationship or if you don't love me, I can't make a promise that I can stop loving you, but I can promise that it'll either never get it the way ever again, or I'll wait however long you want, if that's what you want. I never want you to be unhappy, Mika, never... If anyone hurts you, I might go insane, and if anyone else touches you, I'll probably go mad then too, but I'll be happiest only when you're happiest. You, your smile, and your joy are the only things that matter to me at this moment. I think I won't move far when I do move, but either way I want to stay by your side..." Yu took a deep breath. "I hope that this doesn't ruin your view of me, I just can't help but fall for you..."

Then, Mika let out a sob and he tackled Yu into a hug. "I love you so much, Yu! I love you, I feel... So very much the same!" Yu could tell that he wanted to say more, but his emotions wouldn't dare let him. Yu felt tears slip down his face too, amazed by how perfect Mika was. Yu dried many of Mika's tears with kisses and his hands, "don't cry, Mika..."

"Please don't leave me Yu... Will you... Will you stay with me..?" Mika muttered, embarrassed. Yu choked out a little laugh. "Of course, dummy... Of course..." Yu ran his fingers through Mika's soft hair, cradling him like he could disappear anytime, holding him like this was a dream, loving him like there was no one else in the world. "Yu, are we together?" Mika asked and giggled, tears still in his eyes. He buried his face into Yu's shirt as Yu nodded and smiled proudly. Yu was in love, with Mika, they were in love, officially, and Yu would never let anything happen to him or their relationship, never... That was a promise. He would make their love strong and lasting. Mika was the most important person to him other than his family. He would protect his family just as he would protect Mika, and he would love Mika until Yu could no longer breathe.

~About 13 years earlier~

"Yu-chan... Do you want to marry me someday?"

"Ye- Um, I thought we couldn't marry boys?" Yu fumbled his fingers, looking down, waiting for Mika's response. "I don't care. I'll run away with you, I'll do anything. Anything at all, if you'll be my wife someday." Mika grabbed Yu's hand as they sat together on the grass. They learned about love today at their preschool lesson. Mika was pretty sure that he loved Yu-chan in the way that husbands and wives did each other, but many people said that a boy could not marry another boy. That made Mika want to cry. He didn't know why, he just couldn't take the thought of him or Yuichiro being so close with anyone else. "If things change... Will you marry me? I don't want to be with anyone else." Yu-chan looked at Mika. "Yea, I will be your wife, if you'll be mine too." Mikaela giggled and hugged Yu. "I want to be your bride too, Yu-chan!" Yu laughed at Mika and took his hand to run back home. They planned their future that night... They would get married, live together, buy a house, a fancy one, and get two cats and a dog. Mika also decided that he should have children with Yu, but he wasn't sure how that was supposed to go quite yet, everyone he asked always said that it was a surprise for when they were older, but that was the promise they made, so they'd just have to keep it. Whatever it took, they would get married! They just knew it!

~Present day + a few years~

"Mika, do you remember when we planned our future together? I almost forgot about it... I figured it might not happen, but I think it could." Mika smiled- "you do remember! I think about it a lot... It might be hard to have kids, since, you know... But..."

"Yeah, that doesn't mean we can't do the thing and then go adopt them, yeah?" Yu laughed as Mika's innocent face turned pink and nodded shyly. "D-do you still want to get married?"

"Yes, I do," Yu-chan then, right then, kneeled on one knee next to the fountain they were by, grinned widely, and pulled out a small and pretty box- "Mikaela... Will you make me the happiest human ever alive and become my wife?" Mika nodded eagerly, jumping into a hug and kissing Yu over and over that night. They were engaged, finally. Now, they could really start that future plan they'd made all of those years ago, the first time they went stargazing together.
