Chapter 4
Interrogating Love“Hey, so…” The message started out. “I’ve been missing you a lot recently. I know you’re working right now. I wanted to come over later… if that’s okay?”
Faria rolled her eyes next to me. The look on her face was of such dissent that I didn’t know what to say. She just shook her head for the next 43 seconds.
“Just don’t reply,” she muttered. “You know that new guy you’ve been seeing, tell him to come over and tell him to open the door.”
“What new guy?” I muttered, knowing full well.
“Well, the guy,” she stressed. “The police officer that’s been picking you up every night for about two weeks in a row now, Officer Sohn Hyun Woo is a cutie.”
“How’d you find out?” I asked her, feeling a tad too exposed for my liking.
“Well, the incredulous look on your face right now is just amazing. And, I don’t know. I saw him pick you up once and I left early one day. I talked to him about safe neighborhoods for foreigners, which by the way was really helpful, and I got to know everything I needed to.”
“You’re creepy.”
“And, you’re sneaky. Why didn’t you tell me? He’s yummy.”
“He’s okay.”
“What even? Do you see him?” She asked me, slapping my arm.
I grinned. “Well, you can meet him in a few more weeks, I suppose?”
“I don’t care if I meet him. I care if that a- I mean that guy meets him. Jesus.”
“Faria, you’re all over the place.”
“I know I am. Listen, I need to be going now. I’ve to do some work. I’ll see you tomorrow. Take my advice,” she said and got up.
“Okay. See you.”
Of course, Hyun Woo was already waiting for me outside. He rode a bike when he wasn’t riding his cop car. He smiled at me and I just kind of melted away. Sohn Hyun Woo. Whew.
“Hey. How are you?”
“I’m alright, had a long day. Your firm won the case,” he said. “I expected as much. They also got hired to defend the new suspect, though. I’m sure this one will be hard to win.”
“We’re going for a plea deal already. There’s no way to defend this one on stable grounds,” I told him.
“Ah, so, you already know everything. Why do I bother?”
“Because you’re a nice guy. That’s why you bother.”
“Sure. Now, what’s the plan?” He asked me. And, I made a split second decision.
“Let’s go to my place. I’ll make you dinner,” I told him.
“I’ll help. You really need a taster,” he teased. I had managed to a lot of sugar into a spicy dish the other day and he had managed to tease me every single day since.
“Fine.”
Once home, I thought about making a seafood ramyun but I’d actually have to have some seafood for that. I groaned at home slacking my grocery shopping was.
“What are you groaning about?” Hyun asked me.
“I didn’t shop,” I muttered.
“Fine, we’ll go to my place, then,” he said. “There’s no need to groan.”
“We’ve been sleeping over at your place for a week now.”
“So?”
“So, I hate doing the walk of shame over to my apartment every morning. I want you to do it,” I said and nudged him.
He chuckled. “I think you’re overreacting. What we should do is take a few of your clothes over and you can just leave from there.”
“Don’t be silly. Let’s just go grocery shopping.”
“Grocery shopping doesn’t sound bad, actually. You know how in shows couples act all cute while grocery shopping.”
“Don’t you dare…”
“You know I will,” he said, and wrapped his arms around me, kissing my forehead, cheeks, nose and then lips. He was the cutest guy I’d ever dated. It was that naiveté that made me want to stay with him. He really believed in that pure, unrelenting love crap that many of us had become so cynical about.
“Fine, fine. Let’s go,” I muttered, freeing myself.
“Yeah. We’ll take your car. Groceries are tough to carry on a bike.”
“What a surprise.”
“You’re awfully cynical for a nice person.”
“That’s because I’m not nice,” I muttered and walked towards the exit.
“Very funny.”
The drive there was not fun, on account of the fact that he kept arguing with me about how I was wrong about something that happened a couple of nights ago. It was a game of scrabble and he was a hundred per cent certain that I had hidden tiles from him in order to win. During the game he had been a hundred per cent convinced that pharynx was not a word and now that I’d won, he was convinced that I’d been cheating.
“I will crash this c
