I looked at my phone again and it didn’t ring at all. I, of course, wanted badly to take it as a good sign. The case was one which we were pretty sure that we would lose. However, getting another court date could change that. As long as nothing concrete was said, we’d be golden. Getting this case was a massive break for us. Recently, we’d been getting more traffic and I had had to assist on a few extra cases. They were hoping to get a few paralegals and of course, I would have to interview them and choose them myself.

This was a murder trial and our client had was there by happenstance. We looked at the desk phones anxiously. I believed this client and I was sure of who the actual perpetrator was. Of course, that was none of my concern. All I cared about was the client.

The phone rang after a minute. “Hello,” I said, pressing the speakerphone button.

“We got another court date, A-Ri. You better make this work.”

“Yes, sir,” I said, excitedly. “See you.”

“See you.”

We jumped around happily because even though the workload would double up, we’d get another chance. We would take this damn chance and make this work. I sat down at my desk and started narrowing down timelines. The cctv cameras were very important. I managed to narrow the timelines exactly to prove that he could never have been the one to commit the murder.

There was another thing. This guy had no reason, at all, to kill this man. He was just there to collect a set of vintage comic books, which were lying blood soaked on the bed to confirm his theory. I decided to look at this in a different way. Had this just been a fit of rage? A disagreement on the price or perhaps the owner backing out? How did he managed to find a gun within the span of thirty seconds, soundlessly shoot him, dump the weapon and then start yelling for ambulance? The case that the prosecution was putting forward was basically a way to prove that our client is Flash and to hide the fact that they’ve done no research beyond the basics.

“How long have you been here making notes?” Mr. Song asked me.

“Um… basically the whole day.”

“That policeman boyfriend of yours has been waiting in the lobby for about an hour. He’s so patient. Just go home. I did not mean to make you work this hard.”

“It’s only 7:30PM.”

“I know our office timings have been extended by an hour but you should just go. He’s waiting. Go.”

I rolled my eyes and locked my notes in my locker and I also removed all the data from the computer. I knew that we weren’t all that. But, I just liked feeling like a spy. There was also the need to be loyal to myself and my work.

“Miss Noh, when’s your bar exam?”

“I didn’t sign up to answer it,” I told Mr. Song.

“You should. You really should. Please, for my sake, take the damn exam. You can keep your position but you’re an asset to this company.”

“I’m very happy not standing in front of people to make a fool of myself,” I told him. He laughed and shook his head before waving me off.

Hyun Woo was busy playing on his phone to notice me and I had to clear my throat twice to get his attention. He looked up guiltily and smiled.

“Hello.”

“Hi babe,” he said and kissed me. I heard a few throats clearing because of that and I just rolled my eyes. Why did they care?

“So, what’s on the agenda today?” I asked him.

“Um… well, Min-Ah and Jae Hyun are back from their honeymoon and you told me that they asked us to meet them for dinner. If we don’t leave right away, we will be late.”
