Thirty-Seven
RoomiesLISA’S POV:
“What’s wrong with her?” Seulgi muttered disbelievingly as I continued staring blankly towards the closed door, “What an uptight .”
“I mean, it's Lisa. What makes you think her luck with roommates would be any better than the norm?” Hyoyeon remarked while patting my shoulder in mock pity.
“You girls just watch, I don't need luck, I create my own luck. Once I unleash my irresistible charms upon her…” I paused for added effect.
“Your irresistible charms worked out well earlier, didn't they?” Hyoyeon sniggered.
Out of the blue, Seulgi scurried forward and smacked me on the cheek, hard. THWACK!
“Owww! What was that for?” I exclaimed incredulously as I held my cheek, grimacing in pain.
“Seems like your charms only work on insects,” Seulgi held out her palm towards me, revealing the squashed remains of a mosquito.
The three of us burst into peals of laughter, collapsing onto the bed while clutching our sides. Seulgi and Hyoyeon had been my best friends ever since my parents enrolled me in a prestigious dance academy upon our arrival in Korea from Thailand a few years back. We rapidly developed into the academy’s standout pupils, and our dance covers had actually garnered considerable attention worldwide. As such, the school had invited us to perform during the assembly marking the start of the new year.
“You guys think that was enough preparation? I doubt we'll get much more…”
“We honestly didn't even need to practice, we can do this choreo with our eyes closed.” Hyoyeon stated matter-of-factly.
“Your roommate’s such a spoilsport though.” Seulgi complained while rolling her eyes.
“I mean, she has that look about her, you know? Once she stepped into the room her face just screamed ‘spoilt ’ to me” Hyoyeon clearly didn't fancy Jennie one bit.
“She's pretty, though…” I smiled sheepishly as my friends stared at me disbelievingly.
“Well, you did always have bad taste…”
Fans were screaming their lungs out, camera shutters clicking away at a mile a minute, the spotlight shining on only me. Move after move, wink after wink, hairflip after hairflip, executed with the maximum grace and precision. All of a sudden, I felt a firm shove on my shoulder, then another, and another. Only then did I realise how close I was to the fans; to falling off the stage. Before I could take a step back, the final shove sent me over the edge and I went hurtling into the massive crowd...
“AHHHH!” I awoke with a jolt, immediately realising I was falling off the bed. I flailed my arms around wildly in panic before someone grabbed me by the waist and hoisted me upright. I whipped my head around instinctively and found myself looking straight into the eyes of Jennie Kim, our faces mere centimetres apart.
“Oh.” I blurted out rather dumbly. Nice, Lisa. Real smooth.
Jennie broke eye contact while clearing , staring intently at her palms while explaining, “Sorry I had to wake you up so rudely but we have to attend an interaction session right now.”
“There's an interaction session?” I had no idea what she was talking about, and I had no idea how long I had been asleep for.
“Guess I wasn't the only one not listening in the lecture.” Jennie replied with the tiniest hint of a smile. She jerked her head in the direction of the door. “We're 30 minutes late, and the professor sent a girl to bring us there.”
“Great start to the school year, eh? Bodes well.” I quipped, feeling amazingly accomplished when Jennie’s smile grew even wider. No way I have bad taste... she's so attractive!
“By the way, nice to meet you Jennie, call me Lisa. I'm really sorry about the noise earlier, we were rehearsing for a performance.” I extended my hand to her.
“Nice to meet you Lisa, and I should be sorry instead, I'm really uncomfortable amongst groups of people and turn pretty unpleasant when in a foul mood, I'd understand if you didn't like me.” She took my hand hesitantly.
“No, I'm sorry.”
“No, I'm sorry.”
Our eyes met and we giggled simultaneously.
“And I feel even more sorry for you two, because the later you reach the lecture theatre, the greater the wrath you incur.” A girl’s voice resonated through the wooden door.
"We had better get going."
“This batch of students...giving me such headaches from the start of the year…” Professor Im held his head in his hands dramatically. “First, two idiots with no manners. Next, two clueless, irresponsible brats. You were 37 minutes late. Thirty-seven. Do you know what that means?”
Jennie and I could only hang our heads and hope the worst would be over with soon, while our peers attempted to conceal their amusement, to little avail.
“It means you'll have to complete a project about the number 37 for me. In case you didn't already know, I'm your math teacher for the upcoming year.” Mr Im smiled triumphantly as I exchanged horrified glances with Jennie.
A project about a number? What is the world coming to?
PS: Next chapter will be over the weekend probably! Now that we've met all the girls, we'll be moving into school life :)
