Chikin
RoomiesJISOO’S POV:
It felt strange, actually hitting it off with someone. As my perpetual troublemaking and prank-pulling usually annoyed those around me to no end, I was primarily seen as a wolf in sheep’s clothing, or perhaps more accurately, as my Math teacher once said, “a devil with an angelic face”.
I couldn't quite blame them, honestly. First impressions count, obviously, and how good could one’s first impression of the massive troll that I was be?
Chaeyoung was different, though. With her being completely unfazed by my prank (which was admittedly weak) and my generally weird antics, we were able to strike an immediate chord.
“Back in Australia, I always attended the Australian Open with my family…”
“Ah, Sharapova? UHHHH!” I did my best impression of the infamous Sharapova grunt*, momentarily forgetting that we were taking part in a bonding session (which had basically constituted of a professor chattering away non-stop).
About two hundred pairs of eyes became trained on me in that instant, and the entire lecture theatre erupted in laughter. Except for a certain plump (make that massively obese), red-faced man standing on stage.
“Kim Jisoo, Park Chaeyoung, you two have been yakking away since the start of this session! Do you not have any respect for your elders at all?” Professor (was it Im or Kim again?) unleashed his fury onto us.
“Sir, we were told that this was a bonding session, so instead of learning incredibly, remarkably effective ways of socialising from as unbelievably respectable a figure as yourself, why can't we talk instead? We're tighter than anyone else in this room, surely.” I threw my arm around Chaeyoung’s neck, and she leaned onto my shoulder before nodding vigorously.
So she has a rebellious streak too...I smirked unconsciously.
Professor (Kim, I think it was) rolled his eyes and threw his hands into the air. “I can't stop you if you don't want to heed my advice, but just a reminder that I'm older and wiser than you…”
“Oh, are you really, Professor Kim? No wonder you are in the pink of health and possess a figure to die for! Such wisdom, totally worth looking up to!” I replied as cynically as I could.
Chaeyoung looked at me, alarmed. , did I take that too far?
“You rude scoundrel, get out of this room right now! You can bring your dear friend along and stay as ignorant as you brats are, not even knowing my name!” Professor Im (now I got it) exploded with a booming voice.
As we scurried out of the lecture theatre, Gookjoo, a classmate from high school, gave me a thumbs-up and a knowing smile. “Nicely done, Chikin,” she whispered.
“You should thank me.” I nudged Chaeyoung playfully as we sauntered along the school campus.
“For ruining any hopes I had of leaving good impressions on teachers?” Chaeyoung shook her head but the smile playing on her lips gave her away.
“Don't kid yourself, you know you wanna spend quality time with me and only me.” I winked at her suggestively.
“You're full of nonsense,” Chaeyoung laughed while shaking her head again. “But it's good nonsense, if that makes any sense. I'm really glad we're in the same class, school would probably be unbearable without you.”
I nodded slowly, sharing the same sentiments. During our lengthy conversation in our room earlier, we found out that we were in the same class, were both huge lovers of music and couldn't stand studying. Chaeyoung was one of the only girls I knew who seemed to have a personality that matched mine, and our relationship felt amazingly comfortable for two people who had only met each other a few hours ago.
As much as I hated to admit it, I knew I had developed an unbelievably soft spot for her. Chaeyoung, being foreign, not completely fluent in Korean and seemingly innocent, was essentially the perfect target to tease, troll or prank. In fact, if she had a different personality altogether, I would probably have jumped at the countless opportunities to mislead her.
But I couldn't. She was so forgiving, pure and had placed her trust in me. Looks like I'm becoming soft-hearted...or maybe it's just her.
“By the way, why did that girl call you Chikin earlier?” Chaeyoung grabbed my hand and swung it cheerfully.
“Another thing you should know about me, I absolutely love fried chicken. I can't live without it.”
“Pity, then, the cafeteria doesn't serve that.”
“Who said we had to have dinner in the cafeteria? Let's grab some fried chicken for dinner.”
“Are you serious? You know there's the 9' o-clock curfew.”
“Relax, there are only rules because they are meant to be broken.”
“I can't believe you,” Chaeyoung giggled, “Why is it that I made friends with such a bad influence?”
“Because, once you chikin, you can't chik-out.”
