Nyeong-an
RoomiesROSÉ'S POV:
It was only the first morning in my new school and I already felt hopelessly out of place. The rapid-fire Korean of which I understood little; the cafeteria food which wasn't quite to my liking (there were people in this world who ate purely rice with weird vegetables?) and the sheer number of students poring over intimidatingly thick textbooks.
This culture was worlds apart from Australia's laid-back environment, relaxing pace of life and delicious steaks. I shook my head as I walked towards the boarding school. Looks like I'll perpetually be the odd one out here...
All I could wish for was a good roommate. A chill roommate. Preferably one that loved music as much as I did. I glanced at the room allocations we received through email.
Park Chaeyoung and Kim Jisoo.
Kim Jisoo...it was a pretty name, at the very least. I fumbled around mentally with whatever Korean phrases I knew, bracing myself for the inevitable conversation once I stepped foot into room 302.
I turned the doorknob slowly, peering cautiously into the room in the hope of catching a glimpse of Jisoo. Her suitcase was visible near the bed on the left, clothes strewn messily all over the floor, yet she was nowhere to be seen...
"NYEONG-AN!"
"AHHH!" I screamed and jumped out of my skin as a petite, slender figure leaped out from behind the wooden door.
The girl grinned at me cheekily and held out her hand. "Nyeong-an, I'm Kim Jisoo."
I was momentarily unable to respond. If it had been any other girl, I would surely have lost my head. Jisoo, though, oh my word...I never knew a girl could be this pretty. Her beauty blew me away, took my breath away and made my jaw drop. Dressed simply in a cute denim jacket and shorts, she looked easy on the eye, yet elegant and sophisticated at the same time. I had never believed in love at first sight, but I could tell that I was developing a pretty darn serious girl crush on her already.
I only snapped out of my daze when Jisoo began waving at me again. "Nyeong-an?"
Despite my mind processing what she had said this time, rather embarrassingly, I had no idea what her greeting meant.
Have I got it mixed up? Isn't Hello An-nyeong? Is my standard of Korean really this poor? Either way, surely she hasn't got the greeting wrong...
"Nyeong-an..." I replied shyly, taking her hand and shaking it gently.
Jisoo burst into a fit of giggles and an open palm in my direction. I stared at it daftly, clueless with regard to her intentions.
"High-five!" She exclaimed in what had to be the cutest English I had ever heard in my life.
Her smile was contagious, and I felt my lips curve upwards involuntarily as my palm met hers in a high-five.
I had a really good feeling about Jisoo already. I just knew boarding with her would be a delight.
