First Date?

War and Peace

Today was the last day of the school semester and the trio of friends were planning on celebrating by going to an amusement park. They planned on spending the whole day there riding rides, eating overly-priced foods and taking tons of photos. Eunwoo was looking forward to it the most since he loved rollercoaster rides and hadn't been to an amusement park in years. Soohee was excited to finally be free and do whatever she wanted and Kihyun really wanted to try the new food menu at the restaurant in the park.

The trio had the whole day planned out to the T, and it started out with meeting at Soohee's place to leave together. Kihyun arrived first to Soohee's place and the two impatiently waited for Eunwoo.

"What is taking that boy so long?" Soohee whined, "He never takes this long to get ready. He should've been here 15 minutes ago!"

Kihyun, noticing Soohee's patience wearing thin, decided to call Eunwoo.

~*ring*~

*cough cough* hello...?

Kihyun's eyes widened at Eunwoo's weak voice over the phone.

"Eunwoo? Where are you? We're supposed to be meeting at Soohee's place like 20 minutes ago."

Oh...I can't *cough* go today. I woke up sick with a fever. I shouldn't go out today *cough cough* Tell Soohee I'm sorry.

"You're sick?!" Kihyun said. Soohee turned to look at Kihyun with worry in her eyes, Eunwoo was sick today, of all days??

She motioned at Kihyun to give her the phone and said, "Eunwoo, are you okay? Do you want me to come over?"

Kihyun felt sad that the plans were today were ruined but mostly that he wouldn't be able to spend time with Soohee.

No no, I don't want you to get sick. You know how it is, I'll be better in three days *cough* and you can come see me then. Just go to the amusement park and have fun.

Soohee felt bad that she would be going without one of her best friends, but they already had the tickets in her wallet and were ready to go.

"Are you sure? What about your ticket? We can always just buy another set of tickets for a different day. I know it's expensive but maybe we can somehow get a refund?"

No, just give my ticket to some family *cough* it's not worth it to waste money for a whole other set of tickets. Just go and have a good time. Don't worry about me, even though I know you still will.

Soohee frowned a little before saying, "Alright fine. Your wish is my command. Feel better okay?"

See you in three days.

~*beep*~

Soohee sighed and looked at Kihyun. She asked, "Do you want to go still? Eunwoo may have said not to buy another set of tickets for another day, but I'd be willing to work a whole week to get it done. Even though we were looking forward to it..."

Kihyun felt torn since he really wanted to go and it would be a perfect opportunity to hang out with Soohee as just the two of them, but he felt bad for leaving Eunwoo to suffer alone with his sickness. He took one look at Soohee and decided to be a little selfish.

"Well Eunwoo is right, it would be kind of a waste. I think we should respect his wishes and just go. You know that afterwards, you'll be grateful that you listened to his 'sage advice' and had a good time at the amusement park you've been dying to go to since we planned this literally three months ago."

Soohee looked at Kihyun and bit her lip, knowing that he was right. She contemplated for a little while in her head and finally nodded, smiling as they decided to go to the amusement park.

The two left to the park after placing food in her cat's bowl and sending a quick text to Eunwoo that they would be away if he needed anything.

Little did they know, Eunwoo was actually 100% in full health. He had taken his ticket the night before when he took it out of her wallet and was planning to do some investigating. Soohee would probably just think she left it at home or lost it, not that it mattered.

Eunwoo wasn't normally the type of guy to do something like this, but over the past few weeks, he had been more aware of Kihyun's actions toward Soohee and started to feel protective. While Soohee may not be "his" per say, he was still her best friend who warded off boys trying to get at her. Especially now more than any other time, he felt that if he didn't do this, he might lose her in some way.

Eunwoo was dressed in a simple black hoodie with some blue jeans and a hat to try to be as disguised as possible. Most people could say he was going over the top. But to him, it was what needed to be done, in some creepy twisted way or another.

Kihyun and Soohee arrived at the amusement park just as it opened and had no idea of Eunwoo's trick. The first thing the two did when they got into the park was go to the most popular thrill ride rollercoaster there. The only problem was that Soohee seriously hated rollercoasters with loops since she was scared of falling out (an irrational fear she has had since she was young).

While waiting in line, Soohee was fidgeting with her hands and trying to distract herself from the fact that she was going to ride one of the most terrifying rides in the world (from her perspective). She couldn't help but start to remember every article she'd ever seen in the news about any amusement park accidents which made her start to pace a little in the line.

Kihyun couldn't help but notice how uncomfortable she looked, and felt terrible that he dragged her to the ride. He knew she wouldn't oppose because she's too kind to say no, but he was worried about her well-being.

"Hey, look, if you don't wanna ride the ride, we don't have to. I can just go by myself and you can get some tornado fries or something to pass the time?" Kihyun said.

Soohee looked up at the angel savior that was Kihyun, but at the same time, felt enormously guilty for just leaving him alone because she was too scared of...well, death. By rollercoaster. She shook her head and forced a brave face, saying, "No no, we are going to ride this ride for Eunwoo because I know he would have wanted to. Even if  the statistics of annual deaths from rollercoaster accidents is a lot higher than it should be."

Kihyun just giggled a little at Soohee's silliness, another thing he really liked about her. He also liked that she knew all of these random little facts no one else really knew and yet they applied so well to situations like this to reak the ice a little bit. It made him want to get to know her even more.

After a little while, they finally got to the ride. Soohee was acting calm and composed, as if she was at some elegant banquet. She sat down into the cart and sat with poise that Kihyun was trying hard not to laugh at. It was a rollercoaster, after all, and she was acting like she was a nominee at a highly sophisticated event for charity.

All that shattered in a moment, however, when the coaster started to take off. Soohee let out a small scream and jumped a little, immediately latching onto the closest thing to her for protection, which just so happened to be Kihyun's arm. She quickly backed off after she realized what she did and apologized. Kihyun couldn't help but feel a little disappointed that she backed off so quickly, but decided to be brave.

"Here," Kihyun said, sticking out his hand, "for moral support." He spoke without really looking at her, trying to hide his blushing face. Soohee looked at him with a feeling she hadn't felt before, admiration and adoration. She smiled a little bit and took his hand, intertwining their fingers before screaming at the top of her lungs as they were falling down the huge dip.

As the ride came to a stop, Kihyun could feel Soohee shaking, so he gently swayed their hands together as if trying to say "It's okay, I'm here for you." She let go of his hand as they were getting off but was still shook. She almost couldn't tell what was real. They went to the photo area to find their picture, and Kihyun laughed endlessly at Soohee's screaming face. He made sure to take a picture of it before it went away.

"S-Soohee bahahaha," Kihyun said inbetween breaths, "loo HAHAHA LOOK oh my gosh at your face!" Soohee, after breaking out of her spell, looked up at their picture and couldn't help but notice their hands intertwined, holding each other very obviously in the picture. She blushed and punched Kihyun slightly on the arm.

"YA! Don't laugh at me!! I went on the most terrifying ride in the world for you, you ," Soohee said while holding back her smile.

Kihyun just kept laughing and apologizing while Soohee was pelting him with slaps on his arm. She stopped so she could also take a picture before it went away so they wouldn't have to buy it. Call it cheap, but that's what technology is for nowadays, isn't it?

As the two left for the next ride, Eunwoo was hiding in plain sight (which basically made him invisible) staring at the picture of his two best friends on a ride together. He also took a picture of it, so he could memorize every little excruciating detail. His heart ached a little seeing them holding hands like that in the picture, immortalized forever. His heart felt guilt and joy after looking at poor Soohee's face, subjected to a ride she obviously didn't enjoy. His heart also filled with anger after analyzing Kihyun's face, which was smiling at Soohee's direction with tenderness. Now he had proof. Proof his best friend has feelings for the very same girl that he does.

--

After multiple rides, Kihyun and Soohee decided to get some food. Kihyun went to get the food while Soohee waited at a table. Soohee couldn't help but blush when she realized she and Kihyun had basically been holding hands the whole day. Every ride they went on was one she was uneasy with, and he held her hand every time to try and make her feel at ease. It was nice, but she felt butterflies every time and couldn't help but worry that she was crushing his hand when she got too scared and squeezed out of habit.

She also couldn't help but think, why? Why would he let her hold his hand? Why would he be so caring as to make her try to feel comfortable? Why did she continue to go on all these rides she knew she wouldn't like just so she wouldn't be separated from him or seem like a buzzkill? Why did it matter so much? Why?

And then it hit her almost all at once. She had feelings for him. She liked her best friend. She liked Kihyun. She started mentally flipping out and froze when she saw him walking toward her with their food on a tray. All of a sudden it seemed like there was a glow around him that made him seem angelic, unreal even. She stiffened up when he sat across from her and passed her her food. She took it with a small thank you and started eating, not saying anything or looking at him. She couldn't face him, not when she realized her feelings.

Oh my gosh Soohee thought to herself How could I grow feelings for Kihyun?? When?? How????? What am I supposed to do...should I act natural? But what is natural anymore oh my gosh I can't even look at him. When did he get this handsome looking? Why did he have to dress so nicely today? Wait...IS THIS A DATE??? OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH

"Soohee?" Kihyun said, worry lining his voice when Soohee just stopped eating. She never stops while she's eating unless something is seriously bothering her or on her mind. She loves food too much to stop, even when they were late to class one time when they all woke up late after a party the night before. They walked into her place to find her eating a full breakfast, saying nothing was more important than the first meal of the day and chowing down.

She looked up at locked eyes with him, butterflies filling her entire body. She quickly stood up and ran off, saying she needed to use the bathroom. Kihyun didn't get to say anything before she left and just sat there dumbfounded and worried. Maybe he was being too obvious and she figured out his feelings? Maybe she had a bad stomachache or she started her period? Who knows.

In the bathroom, Soohee called Minji and told her everything that had happened so far.

"OOOOOOH GIRL YOU'RE ON A DATE WITH KIHYUN????" Minji screamed over the phone.

"Shush!! Oh my gosh you're so obnoxious I can't. It's not a date, it was supposed to be the trio hanging out but then Eunwoo got sick," Soohee replied.

"Whaaat? No way, that boy barely ever gets sick. He's like the prince of health. Are you sure? Did you go see him before you left?" Minji inquired.

Soohee did think it was pretty weird that Eunwoo got sick out of the blue since normally he would show symptoms at least the day before. She decided that maybe it was just an overnight sickness, who knows.

"Anyway, that's not the point, what do I do?? I can't go back out there feeling the way I do. I'll be weird! And you know exactly what I mean by that. We still have like five hours left here. Minji help meeeeeee" Soohee pleaded.

"Ya you sound like a helpless baby," Minji said, which made Soohee pout. "Stop pouting, because I know you are, and just go out there and forget about how you feel. Just have fun and have a good time. And if it leads somewhere...well you know."

Soohee could basically hear Minji wriggling her eyebrows, to which she rolled her eyes. "Gross, Minji, stop it. Alright. I'll be cool and pretend everything is fine. Everything is...fine."

"Good! I gotta go now, I'm meeting up with some guy on a blind date set up by you-know-who-and-who. Enjoy your date~" Minji cooed before quickly hanging up so as not to hear Soohee's protests.

Soohee sighed in frustration and tried to compose herself. This wasn't a date, it was a hangout that was supposed to be for the trio and ended up being for just a duo...a couple...like a date. Soohee shook her head like a maniac and took some deep breaths before heading back out, chanting almost in a rituatlistic manner in her head, "This isn't a date, this isn't a date, this isn't a date."

As Kihyun came into her view, a new thought came into her head, "This...isn't a date...? This...would be nice for a date."
