Just Friends?

She's The One
Finally, the exams were over. It was only the midterm exams but exam week was so hectic. After bidding bye to my friends, I took a bus to Seung Yeon’s University. Yes, she didn’t know I was going to see her. For the past few days, we hadn’t only been texting, but also talking over phone. I couldn’t control how I felt about her. Every time we talked, I almost confessed. I wanted her to know that I liked her. A lot. But I was scared. Scared, that she’ll not want to talk to me anymore if I confessed. Scared that she may not feel the same way about me. These thoughts kept me occupied till I got off at the bus stop near the University. I waited outside the gate and hoped that she would become happy when she saw me. Five minutes and I saw a lot of girls walking out. A lot of them looked at me, and acted like a fan girl. I tried to be indifferent towards their behaviour. I kept looking at the gate when I saw Seung Yeonie coming with Ji-Hyun. I was going to call out her name but she spotted me before I could do that. She ran to me, Ji Hyun right behind her. “Oppa!!!! What are you doing here?” she asked, flashing that beautiful smile of hers. “Keunyang.” “Eyyy! You told me you were going out with friends.” She said. “Au. Keundae plans got cancelled.” I said. “Oh no!” she said. Yes, I had been talking to her about going out with my friends after exams. But the plans got cancelled two days ago. “Gwenchana!” I said, smiling. We held our gazes for a second when Ji-Hyun interrupted. “Jakkaman! Did you just call him Oppa?” she asked. “Au. Wae?” SeungYeonie asked. “Sunbae! Really?” she asked me. “Ji-Hyunie! Don’t say anything!” I said. “Wae geurae?” Seung Yeonie asked. “He never lets anyone call him Oppa. Infact, he’ll throw a fit sometimes.” Ji-Hyun said, before I could stop her from saying anything. “Really?” Seung Yeonie asked, looking at me. “Aniya! Nothing like that!” I said, casually. “What aniya!! What I said is the truth. You hate being called Oppa!” Ji Hyun said. I glared at her, mouthing “SHUT UP!” praying that she would get my message. I looked at SeungYeonie, nervous about what I was going to hear. “Aww! But you let me call you Oppa! So, I’m an exception! I feel so honoured.” she said, winking. She actually winked. I chuckled, feeling relieved. “Are you guys hiding something from me?” Ji Hyun asked. “What will we hide?” Seung Yeon asked. “Something’s up. You’re not telling me.” Ji Hyun said. “Aaa! Chincha! Nothing! You overthink things.” I said. “Hmmmm…anyway I gotta go now. Bye SeungYeon-ah. You’ll go on your own right?” Ji Hyun said, hugging her. Seung Yeon nodded. “Bye Sunbae!” she waved, and then left. “So, how was the last exam?” Seung Yeon asked me. “Yea, it was pretty easy. Yours?” I asked. “It was a little lengthy, but I wrote well” she said. We smiled at each other and started walking. “So what are the plans for the weekend?” she asked. “Molla. Haven’t decided yet. Probably will go out with the guys. Plus Band practice” I said. “Nice. Where?” she asked. “I have to discuss with the boys.” I said. “Cool. So how come you came to my Uni today?” she asked, playing with the bag’s strap. “I wanted to surprise you.” I said. She looked at me. I gave a flirtatious smile, hoping that she’ll get my hint. “Ahhh…I see.” She said, but I knew she was happy to see me. We walked for a while in silence when we came to a very familiar place. “Au, Seung Yeon-ah ! Look!” I said, pointing. “The place where we first saw each other!” we both said in unison and because of that, started laughing. “Why don’t we have coffee together this time?” I asked. “Sure. We should.” She said. We went inside and ordered our favourites. The place was crowded today. It was lucky that we even got a table. I saw many familiar faces. We started drinking our coffee, as relaxed as possible. A few people called out to me when they saw me. I heard many “Hyung!” “Sunbae!” in the time we were there. Many girls from my class were also there. They waved to me, and I did the same. I looked at Seung Yeonie to see if she had any expression. But she was busy looking at her phone. I got a little upset. I wanted to see if she would get jealous. But she clearly wasn’t affected. “You have quite the fan base!” she said, startling me. I wasn’t expecting her to even say anything. “Waee?? Are you jealous?” I asked, smirking. She looked up from her phone. “Me? Why would I be?” she asked, giving a nonchalant shrug. I observed her for a few seconds and came to a conclusion that she really wasn’t. Either that or she was really good at hiding it. I would go with the former. “SeungYeon-ah!!!!!” someone called. We both turned to look at the source of the voice. “Oh my goddd! How are youuuu?? It’s been soooo long.” she screamed, smiling wide. Who was this person??? He seemed to be the same age as her. Whether she was jealous or not about me talking to other girls, I was. I was very jealous when she smiled at him, when she showed more excitement than usual. I wanted to ask him to leave. Or I could just pull Seung Yeon-ah by her hand and walk away from here. I was thinking about all these possible situations when I heard SeungYeon call me. “Oppa!! To earth!” she said. “Au.” I said. “Anneyonghaseyo!” the guy said. “Au..” I replied, just nodding. I looked at Seung Yeon and then at the guy, waiting for an introduction. “Oppa, this is my childhood friend, Hwang Tae Joon.” She said. Childhood friend. CHILDHOOD…. “And also he was my neighbour before we moved to the new house.” She said. Great. Childhood friend+Neighbour. This can’t get any worse. They must have spent a lot of time together when they were young. I didn’t know what to say. I just smiled. “That’s really nice. You must have spent a lot of time together then.” I said. “Ofcourse we did. We used to hang out a lot. We studied in the same elementary and middle school. Our parents even teased about us getting married.” Tae Joon said, looking at Seung Yeon. “Omg! Don’t go there! It’s so embarrassing.” Seung Yeon said, but she didn’t stop smiling. I was losing my cool. If this was to make me jealous, then she succeeded. No, I was never the type to become possessive like this. But with her, I couldn’t help it. She and I had a special connection. And it annoyed me to the very core that they were standing very close to each other. Yes, it’s definitely not unusual for friends to do that. Still. I kept zoning out when Seung Yeon called me again. “Oppa, Tae Joon’s leaving.” She said. When I heard that, it felt like the happiest moment. I immediately looked up. “Au keurae. Take care man!” I said, without feeling anything. “Seung Yeon-ah! I’ll contact you later! Keep in touch!” Tae Joon said to her. “Ofcourse! Joshime ga!” Seung Yeon said. “Au, Jal isseo.” He said. They waved to each other and then he left. “Oppa, what happened to you?” she asked. “What happened? Nothing happened.” I said. “Then why did you act the way you did?” she asked. “How did I act?” I asked, very innocently. “Don’t pretend. You know what I’m talking about. He’s my childhood friend. You could have made him feel comfortable.” She said. “Both of you already seemed pretty comfortable.” I said. I didn’t know where this conversation was going. “Oppa!!!” she said. “What? Did I say something wrong?” I asked, showing no emotion. “Seriously? Waeniriya? Why are you being so angry about something so small?” she asked. “It’s not small, Seung Yeon-ah.” I said. I honestly had no idea what we were talking about. I know it was a very silly problem and there was no need to argue. “Oppa, he’s like family to me. My family and his have known each other for so many years. And I’m meeting him after so long and I introduced the both of you. And you didn’t even say anything. Instead you had a really smug look on your face, one that I’ve never seen.” She said. “If he’s that important to you, why are you here, hanging out with me? Why don’t you just go with him? I would have a lot of time then.” I asked, and instantly regretted saying it. I looked at Seung Yeon. The amber in her eyes were glistening due to the tears forming. “Yea. Maybe I should have.” She said, getting up. I clenched my fists. “Seung Yeon-ah..” I began, but she cut me off. She placed the amount for her coffee in front of me. “Thank You for bringing me here Oppa! Here’s my share.” She said, and walked out from there without even looking at me. I saw a tear roll down her cheek when she left. Great. Jong Hyun-ah. Just greattt! You made her cry. What is wrong with you? I payed the bill and ran after her as fast as I could. I finally caught up to her. “Seung Yeon-ah…!” I called, but she kept walking. “Oppa, please leave me alone.” She said. No, I definitely wasn’t going to. “No, Seung Yeon-ah! I won’t. Please listen to me. Jaebal.” I pleaded. But she just wasn’t ready to listen. She didn’t look at me. She just kept looking at the ground. “Seung Yeon-ah. Marhe! Please hear me out!” I said. She stopped and looked at me. Those beautiful eyes which I had fallen for, was red and puffy from crying. I hated myself for hurting her. That chirpy girl who always took things in a fun way, was hurting. All because of me. I had to fix this. “What do you have to say?” she asked, in a tone I almost couldn’t hear. “Mianhae. Jeongmal! I don’t know what came over me. I’m not usually like this. Nau ara!” I said. “Oppa, it’s best if we don’t hang out from now on. You can do whatever you want to instead of wasting your time with me.” She said. “Seung Yeon-ah! I just said that because I was angry. You know that really well.” I said. “If you’re gonna keep doing the same thing every time I talk to my old friends, then there’s gonna be a major problem.” She said. “It won’t happen again. It’s just that I’m a little possessive about you. I got jealous, alright?” I said. “We’re really good friends. I always put you before others. Then why are you getting jealous? And how would you feel if I act rude in front of your friends?” she asked. Good Friends. Yea, that’s what she thought. “Seung Yeon-ah. Is that what we are? Just ‘GOOD FRIENDS’?” I asked, with no fear. We were arguing anyway. She didn’t say anything. She started walking again. I caught her hand. “Don’t run away. Dedaphae! You only consider me your ‘Good Friend’, don’t you?” I asked. She was about to say something, when someone called my name. “Sunbae!” they said. I turned around to see my junior walking towards me. Please just say hi and leave. Please. This is not the right time to make conversation. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere.” She said. Why did she have to find me now? “Oh,why?” I asked, still not letting go of Seung Yeon’s hand. My junior looked at Seung Yeon. “Who’s this? Does she go to our college?” she asked. “No, I don’t. And I’m no one important. You guys carry on.” She said, faking a smile, making me let go of her hand. No one important. Seriously? Before I could stop her, she ran to the bus stop and boarded the bus. Ottohkajwo!  How was I going to fix this? I messed up big time.
