I lifted the glass of vodka from the counter, held it in front of me, and watched the cube of ice bumped into each other. It made small and incoherent clanking sounds but they were muffled by the loud blasting of music that came from a rock band performing on the center stage near the bar counter where I was at. I closed my eyes and let the things around me to sink in.

Jeonghan and I fought… The thought made me winced.

I should not have burst like that…  I took a sip of the alcohol.

He should not have learned about it…

The alcohol left a bitter aftertaste on my tongue and it scraped the back of my throat. The alcohol left me wanting more and so I gulped down the remaining content of the glass, the burning sensation of the liquid pained me more and for a second it made me forget about the pain of seeing Jeonghan looked at me with pity and despair.

I felt my phone vibrate through the pocket of my pants. I left it there. I did not answer. It was probably Jeonghan.

“Excuse me,” I raised my-now-empty-glass. The bartender gave me a nod, poured me another glass, and I gave him a small thanks which I bet he did not hear as he proceeded on taking the order of the man who sat on the stool just beside me.

“So... why are you drowning yourself in – ”

I snapped my head and took a glance at the man beside me. Wonwoo. “What?” I glared and took another sip of vodka.

“Why are you drowning yourself in alcohol?” He smiled as he gulped down one mug of beer.

“Says someone who drunk one glass in just one swig,” I looked at him from head to toe. “Why are you in formal clothing?” I asked just about the time when he started taking off his black suit and placed it on the bar counter. He loosened his tie, ed the first two buttons of his sleeves, and rolled up his shirt up to his elbows. He propped his arms on the counter as the bartender gave him another mug of beer.

Wonwoo smiled softly – and somewhat, sadly – at me. “My best friend got married today, so yeah.” He smirked and sipped from his beer.

“Congratulations?”

“Thanks,” he chuckled, “But I shouldn’t be the one accepting the greetings.”

“Right.”

The conversation ended. The both of us just let the loudness of the surroundings engulfed us into a deafening silence caused by our inability to take up a topic to discuss with the other, by our inability to bring up questions that could possibly break the other.

I heard Wonwoo let out a sigh. “You know,” he started, “Sometimes… no matter how much you treasure another person, no matter how much you love that person, one way or another you’ll things up. And then boom! You’ll lose that person. You’ll lose him to someone who, when you look at them, makes him happy – happier than you could ever make him.”

He was laughing but I could hear the sadness.

Wonwoo gulped down the content of his mug while I sipped from my glass.
