Loving an Heiress

It was one scorching Saturday morning in summer, a young man in his late twenties got off from the subway and walked confidently towards the crowd. A cup of coffee from the hippest coffee shop in one hand and a man purse in the other. He was dressed in a simple semi casual work attire – a blue long sleeve shirt and beige cotton pants – yet still managed to look dashing and attract attention out of the girls.

He stopped by at a newsstand, said a warm greetings to the owner and picked up several magazines, every woman magazine sold at the stand which gained a confused look from the ahjumma. Yet he did not feel even slightly embarrassed but continued to stroll to a building in the center of Seoul. The sign inside the lobby shows “Star Media”. He went straight to the elevator and press 15. The building was almost empty as it was supposed to be an off day, but once he reached the 15th floor, dozens of employees were seen busy at their respective cubicle. Each and everyone bowed respectfully to the man as he went straight to the large door at the end of the hallway: The Director’s office.

Immediately after he arrived at his desk, his office phone rang. He leisurely put his belonging on his desk and sat on his chair before picking up the phone.

“Femme Magazine, Director’s Office; This is Jung Yong Hwa speaking.” said the young man

“I knew you'd be in the office!! How come the only person in this company, beside Chairman Park that is, who does not have a boss, is in the office in Saturday morning?” the voice of another young man is heard through the speaker, the surrounding of that man sounded busy as if he were in the middle of the road.

“Do You know the funny thing about not having a boss? Is that everybody thinks that you don’t have anything to do. And suddenly everybody becomes my boss. I'm like a trainee with higher salary!” Yong Hwa said jokingly.

“Okaay… tell me, who is it this time?” Replied the other man

“Who’s what?” Yong Hwa started to flip the magazines he just bought. Occasionally ripping one of the pages.

“Who is making the most eligible bachelor in Seoul stuck in the office on Saturday?” The young man giggled at his own jokes.

“Hail to the almighty Director Park who wants me to help him finalize the Mock-Up for the latest edition. He’s not even my boss but he acts like I’m his slave… It’s not MY fault that he has neither friends nor plan every Saturday… Nor it’s my responsibilities to keep him company every weekend!!” Yong Hwa's frustrated tone was getting noticeable

“Huh! You mean THE DIRECTOR Park? The lost child has return?” the man faked his surprise.

“I wish… serving a 25 years old heiress would be sooo much better than that old stuck-up.” Jung Yong Hwa rolled his eyes a little.

“Hah! That old stuck-up is the second most eligible bachelor in Korea!! Besides… you should be careful talking behind his back, what if he suddenly pops up from the Director’s room like the other day.” He grinned for teasing his friend.

“I know, right? Talking about being overly comfortable on somebody else’s seat. I swear the late Director is angry about it… I heard noises the other day from inside the room…” Jung Yong Hwa replied while still focusing on the magazines.

“Yah Yah Yah! You know I don’t like hearing that kind of stuff!!” his voice was so loud, Jung Yong Hwa had to distant the phone from his ear.

“Aigoo Jung Il Woo-shi… What are you? 9? You’re lucky you are not in the position that requires to stay late at the office. Do you know what they say happened in the HR Department??” Now its Yong Hwa’s turn to grin, he waited expectantly for his best friend’s reaction

“Kemanhe!!!” Il Woo screamed, Yong Hwa bursted out a long laugh while the man on the other end of the phone cursed.

“Why are you calling, Jashika?” Yong Hwa eventually was able to talk.

“Oh yeah, right! Impala? Tonight at 8?” Jung Il Woo mentioned a club that they frequent. “Min Hyuk and Seung Ho will be there too… it’s been awhile Yong Hwa-ya. What time will you be finished?”

Yong Hwa frowned, “Err, Could be around that time… but I’d have to go straight from the office then. That means no!”

“Ah! Waeee??” Il Woo stopped his car and got ready to light off from the grey Hyundai Santa Fe.

“I don’t have anything to wear! I don’t wanna go to a club with you guys in a plain shirt and cotton pants… my pride won’t allow me.” Yong Hwa threw away the rest of the magazine and collected the paper that he ripped from them.

“Aish… just go to Hyo Rin! Do you want me to smoothen things up for you?” Il Woo walked into a men salon and greeted the receptionist warmly.

Yong Hwa stopped what he was doing and thought for a minute, “Naah… I can do it myself. No woman can ever say no to this guy... see you there!” he was now pinning the phone with his shoulder as both of his hand were busy creating scrapbook out of the paper.

“I’d like to see you try…” Il Woo said with a smirk, sitting down on one of the salon’s chair.

“Sikkeuleoun! I’m busy… kkeunho” With that, Yong Hwa hung up and started binding the scrapbook.

He collected pieces of the magazine and aggregated similar theme articles so he could sum up what their competitor was featuring; by doing that he could see the trend that was happening in the media at that moment. Something that he liked to do besides doing his daily tasks. Just after he finished binding the scrapbook, the intercom buzzed indicating someone inside the building was calling him. With a long sigh, he pressed the receiving button.

“Jung Yong Hwa-shi? I thought you’d be in the office by 8?” Said a man with a calm and charismatic voice.

Yong Hwa let out an unaudible “What?!!” before answering, “Deh? Deh… I am sorry Creative Director Park; I was held up a bit back in the house. How may I help you?”

“Please come to my office to take the Mock-Up, you need to review it first before passing it to Printing.” Park Shi Hoo said with the same distant tone, he immediately cut off the communication.

“Yes Chairman Park” Yong Hwa said mockingly, knowing that the line was no longer connected. He went out of the office and went straight to the lower floor where the “creative” floor was situated.

The “Creative” floor was where the department that relates to creativity located, it had a whole different vibe with the administrative floor on the 15th. It was more relaxed and fun, designed specifically so that contributors, designers and planners could let out their utmost creativity for the magazine. All of the creative contents that were published to the public were created on that very floor.

Jung Yong Hwa checked up on his appearance first before knocking the glass door, he immediately opened the door when the man inside the room told him to. A man in mid 30s was sitting behind a large desk, behind him was a whiteboard that shown what was left from a brainstorming session. Several first page covers of the previous edition of Femme Magazine were framed and hung onto the wall. A big scrapbook look-alike was opened in front of him; he was still seriously checking that book. Jung Yong Hwa stood in front of him without saying a word. For a few minutes there was an awkward silence in that room, or at least it was awkward for Yong Hwa. Finally the man closed the book and looked up to him.

“I reviewed it several times already and I think it looked great… I’m sure it will make up the drop in sales of last month edition. I need you to look at it once more before it’s being printed.” Park Shi Hoo said whilst handing out the book to Yong Hwa.

“Deh, Director!” Yong Hwa hesitated a bit before continuing, “But, Director… aren’t we a bit too mainstream? I think that what we came up is a bit similar to other magazines, especially it’s summer now so the contents are usually predictable… Don’t you think we need to be a bit different to stand out?”

Park Shi Hoo was expressionless, much to Yong Hwa’s annoyance. He could never guess what’s in the Creative Director’s mind. “Yes! "Standing Out" is a good strategy, but we still need to follow the philosophy of the company… and that is what it is.”

“No disrespect, Sir… but if we stand out a bit bold to hit the mainstream, I think we can save our sales.” Jung Yong Hwa braced himself for an outburst.

“Jung Yong Hwa-shi, our strength is at the finest technology so even with similar theme, our magazine would look more beautiful and that is what women wants to see… beautiful things. Besides, what do you suggest us to do? Change the theme at last minutes just because we see what our competitor does? When you finally have your own media company, I would love very much to see what you’d do.” Park Shi Hoo passive-aggressively shut Yong Hwa down.

Yong Hwa finally let it slide and turn around to head to the door. He was about to open the door when Park Shi Hoo spoke again.

“Jung Yong Hwa-shi, please book me plane ticket to Paris for tonight .” He said without looking away from his computer screen.

“Deh? Are you going to Paris, Sir?” he immediately regretted his question as it was a rhetorical one. “How many days, Sir?” he followed it with another question to save his face.

“I'll be back on Thursday, there’s an event held by Lagerfeld and I have to find my cousin while I’m at it…” Park Shi Hoo said after contemplating for a moment, “what a hassle” he continued in a low voice, but Yong Hwa can still hear the complaint.

“Director Park? Is she joining the company now?” Jung Yong Hwa voice was more hopeful than he intended.

Park Shi Hoo immediately looked up, “She’s not the Director, yet. And we don’t know whether we can convince her or not. You may leave!” The stern voice of the Creative Director made Jung Yong Hwa reluctant to respond, so he just bowed his head and went out of the office.

Park mansion was one of the two stories house located in Pyeongchang-dong which was said to be one of the wealthiest neighborhood in Seoul. However compared to the other houses, that mansion was considered humble with the building that was dominated with wood and glass, four car garages and large yard. A big tree complete with a tree house welcomed every guest who stepped into the mansion, the swing under the tree and a dog house that was clearly had been empty for so many years were still well maintained. The tree house was decorated with pirates related stuff and there were initials of 'PSH' and 'PHS' on top of the door. The house was fairly big and exuded warm and coziness.

Chairman Park was in his study, watching a large screen that projected series of pictures of a young lady. The pictures were taken all across Europe where the lady milk a sheep in a countryside somewhere in Austria, took a cheese from its warehouse in the village near Munich Germany, played at the beach in South of France or rode bicycle in between the hills of Scotland. She was smiling widely, Chairman Park was enjoying the picture so much, tears started to well up in his eyes.

"Shin Hye-ya... forgive me, it's time for you to go home!" He said with a sad eyes. He then picked up his phone and dial an international call. He waited for a few minutes before it finally answered.

"Yobuseyo!!" a cheerful voice was heard through the receiver, "Harabeoji?" she continued.

Chairman Park took a deep breath before letting out a high pitched voice. "Ya!! Park Shin Hye! Where have you been? This is the third time this year that you move out without my permission!"

Shin Hye giggled a little bit, which made her haraboeji's heart melted, "Biyane, Harabeoji... You were a bit annoying about the whole Director's position, the last time we spoke. So I had to run away... But I know you'd find me."

"It's not running away when you are still using your Credit Card!!" Chairman Park let out another fake-scolding.

"I know, right!? I was desperate haraboeji... my money from barista gig in Munich ran out... so I had to borrow from you. But I'll pay it back in no time...!" She replied still with a spirited voice.

"Tweseo!! Don't give it back... just go home next week! Your Shi Hoo Oppa is going to Paris... you need to go home with him." Chairman Park said, hoping that she would not reject him this time.

"Harabeoji... why do we have to go through this agaaaiin? I am not taking the Director's position... give to Shi Hoo Oppa! He's smart, he's capable, he loves you!" Shin Hye pleaded her grand father.

"Are you saying you don't love me then?" Chairman Park shouted again.

"Where did you get that from?" Shin Hye was confused.

"Because the other description match perfectly to you... I just don't know about the love part." Now he pretended to be sulking.

Shin Hye giggled again, Chairman Park braced his heart for that cute giggle so it would not melt him even more like always. "Aigoo... Uri Harabeoji is sooo cute. Saranghaee!", Chairman Park was ready to give up but withstood. "Anyway, you have two grandchildren... why are you always pestering me?" she continued.

"What? You mean that Park Hyung Sik? I like him... but he's not so smart!" Chairman Park frowned thinking about his only grand son.

"If only you knew, Harabeoji..." Shin Hye replied while suppressing a laugh.

"What?!" Chairman Park's voice was so loud it made Shin Hye jumped a little bit.

"Aniyo..." She immediately-almost-like-a-reflect answered back... "Hyung Shik would kill me if Harabeoji finds out..." She thought. "Anyway... please stop nagging. I will come home when I am ready, but I promise you I will!"

"And when is that?" Chairman Park started to feel hope.

"1 or 2 more years?" Shin Hye answered timidly.

"That's it... you come home next week, or I'll cut off all of your support!!" Chairman Park is now furious

"What?? Harabeoji... no no no... listen to me! Arasso... 6 months!" She tried to negotiate

"Next week! End of discussion... If my private investigator does not see you in Paris by Monday... I'll retract all of my support." It was a threat from the Chairman and he meant every word of it.

"Waaahh!! My own harabeoji confessed that he hired an investigator for his grand daughter. You're so creepy..." Shin Hye started to well up

"Whatever... you need to help me with the company. Femme Magazine's revenue keeps on declining... I need someone I can trust to keep an eye on it." Chairman tried to talk some sense with his grand daughter.

"Shiro!! I hate that company... If you forced me to join it, I will destroy it with my own hands!!" Shin Hye screamed her threat and hung up.

"Shin Hye-yah... Shin Hye-yah!! PARK SHIN HYE!!!!"

Yong Hwa let out a sigh, satisfied for having finished his task. He gave a last glance of the Mock-Up and went to the copy machine. Every Mock-Up approved by the Director must be copied for filing before it was sent to printing. Right now in the magazine business, he was the most important and sought out person as he held the final version of an edition that was about to be published, something that was always being very well kept. That's why, that task was for the Director's secretary and him only.

He went inside the Director's office and headed to a walk-in closet at one side of the room. He opened one of the filing cabinet to store the copy and immediately went to the printing department down at the creative floor. He looked at his watch.

"6 o'clock, I'm ahead of schedule... they will be so happy." he thought, smiling for his achievements.

Once they received the Mock-Up, the Printing Department had to work so that it was ready to be shipped by 6 a.m in the morning. That was how short the time amount given to somehow convert a 3-dimensional Mock Up into computer graphic, print at least 5000 copies and ship them to distribution center where each copy would be sent all over South Korea. Being shipped together at the first time was the key, because every city had to receive the copy at the same time so that every copy could be sold at the same day. Losing the moment was considered loss in revenue.

So when Yong Hwa could give them 12 hours to work, he will be treated as one of the Gods. But there were also time, when he gave them only 8 hours to work... someone actually threw water to his face. Things people do when they were sleep deprived! But today was not one of those days. Today he got to be a God and still had time to get ready to have fun with his friends.

On the way back from the Printing department, he made a stop at the fashion department and saw a woman in late twenties still working on a mannequin. She wore the latest trend that fit her like a glove and moved with such grace and oozed iness. Her focus gaze to her work could make any man fall for her.

"She truly is a work of art..." Yong Hwa thought while entering the room and knocked on the glass wall. "Hyo Rin-ah..." she did not respond, "Min Hyo Rin.. pst!!" Yong Hwa tried his luck again. Hyo Rin frowned a little. Yong Hwa smile mischievously. "Hyo Rin Noona!!" Yong Hwa called with a loud whisper.

"Stop calling me that!! We're at the office!" She barked at him.

"Heokshi! I knew you're prone to Noona Killer!" Yong Hwa teased. "Aigoo.. what are you doing here at this hour? Instead of spending it with your loved ones?" Yong Hwa tried to win some points. "Did you cut your bangs? It looks good!"

"The bangs have been there for two months... try again!" Hyo Rin said without moving her attention from the mannequin.

"I didn't see you at lunch... Did you eat salad with balsamic sauce alone in here again?" Yong Hwa said again, this time there was sincerity in his eyes.

Min Hyo Rin put down the material that she was working so intently, let out a frustrated sigh and turned to him, "Is there any significant objective of this conversation?" she said coldly.

"Anii... I thought if I knew you'd be here I would brought garlic bread from the cafeteria to go with your salad." Yong Hwa said, flashing the famous "Secretary Jung's smile", Min Hyo Rin raised her right eyebrows. "So here's the thing... I will have a business meeting at 8, and I have to go straight from the office. So I was thinking..."

"You were thinking to borrow one of the collection like last time when you spilled ketchup on a Burberry Jacket?" Hyo Rin cut him off immediately..

"Ya.. I said I'm sorry and paid the dry cleaning fee already." Yong Hwa said defensively, "Anyway, I saw a great jacket by Hillfiger featured on last edition, do you still have it?"

Hyo Rin looked at him suspiciously, "What kind of business meeting allows you to wear a black motorcycle jacket?"

Busted! Yong Hwa put on his most charming grin, "The kind where I have to impress
