background 

[2002] ryan was born phan le tranh quang n to his chinese immigrant parents in hanoi, a healthy boy who is somewhat underweight. he was the second and middle child, and the only son of the family. (older sister is two years older, younger sister is two years younger) 

[2008] at the ripe age of six, he was enrolled in an international primary school,where english, alongside vietnamese, was the core teaching language. it was pretty much just english actually, but of course he was taught vietnamese as well. mandarin chinese was pretty much confined to the house. 

[2012] fifth grade of primary school, and the year that saw the most kpop debuts. his friends were getting interested in kpop, so he got interested in kpop as well. he started dancing to kpop, singing to kpop. yeah, his korean was bad, but it's okay. it'll improve, and for now he's still struggling with his vietnamese. 

[2014] first year of secondary school and suddenly his parents told him they're moving back to jilin. there was a series of anti-china protests, and his parents were afraid of the unrest, though it turned out to be relatively minor. nonetheless, they decided to go back to china, where they feel more secure there. 2014 was a busy year for ryan's family, and listening to his favourite music actually somewhat helped him through it. 

because of his family moving around, ryan ended up starting secondary school late, and spent the whole of 2014 training himself with singing and dancing through watching kpop videos. he wasn't sure how good he was, but didn't dare ask his parents to enroll him in classes because his family wasn't exactly in the best financial position. 

[2015] his actual first year of secondary school was a massive struggle. though he had learnt mandarin chinese from communicating with his parents, it was different trying speaking the language 24/7 in the presence of fluent native speakers. because of the money involved in moving from vietnam to china, his parents didn't have enough money to send him to an international school like before, so off to local school it is. it was...different, to say the least, and it wasn't a particularly welcome change either. ryan was just glad they had korean classes, but he struggled with that as well. 

[2017] sm had a global audition in shanghai, and he was like, you know what, it, i'll give it a try. (his mom happened to have a business trip down there and brought him along) he didn't pass, but the experience he got was valuable and that was what mattered. ryan learnt how to hold his head up with more confidence, continued honing his pitch and musical skills. after the audition, ryan mustered up the confidence and joined a few musical clubs at school, because hey, he had the courage to go try for an audition. what could be worse? his extra-curricular activities made him a little happier to be at school, and for once he didn't duck whenever people called his name. 

[2018] this time starship had a global audition in beijing, and ryan trotted off with his mom to beijing again. his mother knew what he was getting up to, but didn't really say anything, since she didn't really think he'll make it - so she just let him try out. this time, ryan got in. it was an immensely difficult conversation to have with his parents, but he soldiered through with it. his mom kind of supported it, but his father was really angry about it. it took a lot of convincing from his mother's end to let ryan chase his dreams. eventually his father relented, but it ended up in a huge argument and he was basically disowned. well. if that's what it takes. 

[2020] ryan has been training in starship for two years and cravity just debuted. he's worried about his future, having just turned eighteen, but a sudden offer spun him on his feet. he was joining viva project.
