More Fixes for Opera Mini Users
Opera Mini is the hardest browser I've ever had to code for. It sits right up there with Internet Explorer 6 and it in fact might be the king of "browsers that do weird for similarly strange reasons". This can readily be evidenced by the fact that if you visit the site using Opera Mini and you use any theme other than the Opera Mini Theme, all of the icons are converted into Chinese characters for no discernable reason I can think of. Hence why the Opera Mini Theme is devoid of icons (in case you ever wondered).
Anyway, for two months I've been trying to fix a bug in Opera Mini where clicking on any link doesn't actually do anything but refresh the page. It sounds underwhelming until you realize that some Opera Mini users couldn't go anywhere other than where they landed! Trying to figure out what makes a link do that when it works in every other browser was like trying to figure out why people still talk about Justin Bieber - tediously mind-numbing and agonizingly painful.
What I had to do was remove code from the site piece by piece until the links finally worked in Opera Mini. Each time I made a small change, I had to refresh Opera Mini on my phone which took a really long time to load (because that was the bug) so it took an equally long time to check the result. Turned out to be some small piece of Javascript that did some async calls that I guess, Opera Mini couldn't handle. I took it out for users of Opera Mini and the Opera Mini Theme so if you fall under either of those categories, not only should the links work, but the site pages should load much faster for you now! (sorry, the Bieber mystery remains unsolved)
There are still a few things that I recognize to be broken. Chief among them is the tag search form in the tags section. I'm going to fix that as soon as I figure out which browsers it's broken for (I know Opera Mini is one of them but I think there are others). If the tag search form doesn't work for you at all, let me know what browser you're using and whether you're on a mobile device or PC in the comments below!
Happy Friday!
