The Importance of Concepts for Idols

After reading a couple of opinions in unpopularkpop, I had this sudden urge to express mine.

A lot of fans wonder why the idol group they liked is not popular enough.

Simple…

Their concept is not appealing to the general public. I know. You’ll say but it’s good. Maybe to you its good but they don’t think the same way.

Concepts or theme has always been the battle with making it big in the kpop scene in my opinion. If you have the right stuff even though the songs are not great, you’re sure to be a hit.

Lucifer of SHINee <- some of the lyrics are just plain questionable.

Miss Right of TeenTop. <-Rebel Boys with one girl?

Man in Love of Infinite. <- the guys preparing for a date and are in love.

Rum pump pum pum of f(x) <- I don’t know what to think.

Oh of Girl’s Generation <-too cute Mr. Simple of Super Junior <-I don’t know what to say.

Abracadabra of Brown Eyed Girls<- the very y concept that might be a tad too much for people below 10 years old.

Lovey Dovey by T-ara <- I just don’t know what they’re thinking.

Catallena by Orange Caramel <- Seafood?

Fantastic Baby by Big Bang <- one part of the song makes me wonder why do they have to use it.

(I’m a fan of the majority of the groups mentioned above but I’m ashamed to admit that I like some of those songs-.-)

As you can see there are a couple of concepts that are questionable but liked by the public and a whole lot of young ones. And yet, these songs made it to the top charts. See what I mean?

That’s what VIXX did to gain popularity. Because of the growing interest with Dark concepts, they did the same and gained a lot of fans. Girl’s Day did a y concept and now is on the map as idols to watch out for.

Concepts are simply stepping stones for idols until they have a stable fanbase. When they achieve that, they could fully explore the idols’ skills.

These concepts could also make or break you.

One example failed concept is from a group called TWILIGHT. They used a vampire theme in which they forgot to add more originality. From what I know, they’ve already been disbanded.

With the right concept, timing and a bit of luck, groups rise to popularity.

These are my opinions and everyone is also entitled to have one.
