The Welcome Mat - Teaser #2

Hey,

So here's the second teaser to our JongSica/OnSica story. It's upcoming, but there is not confirmed date of release yet. To remind you, the story is about choices, loving your family, following what you love and believe in, and finding home. In the previous teaser we met Jessica and Krystal, and we went into their relationship a bit, and hinted a bit at the conflict. In this one, we are tackling Jonghyun and Onew's relationship as they'll be portrayed as brothers in this fic. Anyways, enjoy!

Thanks,

- Nemo and Addie

Jonghyun still wasn’t awake yet. Onew sighed aloud, leaning back into his chair as he took a sip of his warm coffee. His mind wavered to his brother’s sudden behaviour the previous night. The younger boy had seemed so cold. He had seemed so distraught, but Onew had also picked out the glints of hate and loss flickering in his eyes.

He didn’t know what had caused Jonghyun to be cooped up in his room, and what was the cause behind him being so late this morning. Checking his watch, Onew quietly picked up a scrap of paper and grabbed a pen to write up a note. He wrote elegantly, and formulated his words with precision. He had to show authority in his message, but also some compassion.

Jonghyun-ah,

I completed all your unfinished homework for you. Last night, you seemed tired, and I thought that it was the least I could do. I left a bagel for you. I put garlic cream cheese on it, your favourite. We can talk later if you want. Your big brother is always willing to lend you an ear. Feel better. Do well. And smile.

                                                                                                                            Love,

                                                                                                                   Jinki

He grinned to himself, feeling proud of his short and concise message. Pulling on his jacket, and grabbing his bag and coffee, Onew silently ambled out of the house, locking the door, and whispering a little prayer of hope for his brother. He knew Jonghyun was having trouble recently with some of his courses, and as the younger man was going to graduate this year, Onew believed that Jonghyun should be putting more effort into his work.

As he walked down the path, his mind reflected upon the past, and how each footstep was bringing him into the future. Even if he took a step back, it would be the future. He couldn’t physically head back to the past, but he could reminisce about his memories.

He remembered the days when they would play in the park for hours, and he would worry about the setting sun. And then Jonghyun would give him that charming and comforting smile and he would tell himself that five more minutes wouldn’t hurt.

He remembered the times when he was diligently studying, and Jonghyun’s music would be booming from the room next to his. The walls would pound, and things would shuffle out of their orderly spots. When he would finally get up to go tell his brother to lower the volume, he would near the door, and hear Jonghyun’s passionate voice singing some self-composed song, and Onew would let the noise go on.

He remembered those times when he would see Jonghyun lazily sprawled across the couch watching some show, and how he would want his brother to get up to do some homework, but would eventually join Jonghyun. He remembered those times when he would be shivering after Jonghyun would have dauntingly pushed him into the pool. Even though he would furious originally, after seeing his brother rolling on the ground laughing, he would smile. He remembered those times when Jonghyun would lead him into forests and they would wander aimlessly, and when Jonghyun would threaten that he would go on alone, Onew would follow nonetheless to protect his little brother.

As he continued to walk, Onew grinned to himself as he thought of those past times. He did indeed miss those days. He missed how beautiful life was back then, before the stress of a job, and university courses came upon his shoulders. He now had a girlfriend to take care of, and no matter how much he adored her, he wished that he still had more time for Jonghyun. During the transition into adulthood, there were many things that he regretted.

He knew that he had to be that smart boy that his parents showered with love. He knew he had to show promise for his future. He knew he had to prove that he was worth Jessica’s love. However, the one thing he missed was childhood, and with childhood, he missed his brother.

He was always willing to give up everything and anything for his brother; for Jonghyun. He would let everything fall apart for that one soul. He would let himself tumble down for his brother. He would shatter all his achievements for his brother. He lived for his brother, and he would be glad to die for his brother.

But, Onew knew that there was no reason to go to such extremes. He knew that he could juggle everything. He could handle it all and still find time for his brother, even if it was just him doing Jonghyun’s homework. He was up for it all. And every thought of his brother brought more and more life into his step, and widened his grin even more.

Onew’s life was very simple, yet so complex. He was always very happy. And so when, later that day when he came home, what he was greeted by shocked him. He hadn’t expected it, and it had initially surprised him. As he had quietly bent over to pick up the crumpled piece of paper from the ground, his eyebrows had furrowed. He had unravelled it, and his eyes had narrowed, but only confusion had reigned on his face. And the only thing he wondered was why the words ‘big brother’ had been so roughly crossed out.

Lovely teaser. I simply love the caring yet careful way you constructed their relationship. The sacrifices Onew makes for Jonghyun are just heartwarming. I fully enjoyed reading the recollection of memories that Onew held. I really am excited to read this, simply becase it is beautifully written, as are your other works
