Front Page Changes With New Algorithm
I've made changes to the front page that shows the most popular stories of the day. It's to help people find new and interesting stories that other people also currently find interesting. The most popular stories of the day section will mainly feature authors with stories without much prior exposure but other people have found interesting. The algorithm is loosely based on Reddit's ranking algorithm (extra points if you know what that is).
By the way, this is an email I received from a user complaining about the layout change:
How are new authors supposed to gather attention with the way the site has been changed? Only the popular authors will stay popular, and the unknown will stay unknown. I don't think that's fair at all, and neither should you.You used to allow new stories to appear on the front page, but now they have to be searched for. We all know the majority of people nowadays are lazy and only like to be spoonfed. Now, the only 1/1,000,000 way to get noticed is through the random feature, but how RARE is that?!I am completely dissatisfied with the new layout and I await for it to be changed.
My Response:
No, you never gave it a chance. It has been 2 hours. You don't even know how it works. Did you even look at the stories? They're not all by the most popular authors. It is what is most popular for today even for stories with unknown authors. Email us back in a week when you've had the proper time to evaluate its usefulness without jumping to conclusions.
Before you email me something like this, make sure you had a few days of trying it out before you make any snap judgments about a new feature without actually giving it a chance.
