So it seems that people are spamming comments for karma anyway. I just gave authors the ability to downvote comments in their own stories and reduce that commenter's karma by 1. If this is successful, I'll copy this over to blog comments.
wooops okay nevermind my last comment I totally skimmed over the part that says only the auther can downvote the comment.
...but then this gives rise to another concern, what if someone doesn't like a commenter and downvotes every single one of their comments or something?

Hmm...but can't this also be farmed? What if someone has a grudge against someone (like for instance if they asked for a review and they got one they weren't happy with) and makes a whole bunch of accounts to entirely destroy someone's karma? Like...you know what I mean?

those spamming the comment box, for sure should be afraid of this new feature hahahaha
I often leave simple comment/praise to the stories I read, often I check the 'random story' I love the feature so much.
For me, it's not something I like nor something I am against. Because, now I am somewhat afraid to comment for the reason that I may get downvote. But then it's a good thing for authors as they may get less spam comment. However, it's also likely that they may get less comment.
What about instead of downvoting, having a way to approve the comment so that the person can receive karma. I know it may not be the best idea, because there are fics here that the authors may no longer visit to be able to 'like' the comments. It is just another idea.
I wouldn't want people to know that I downvoted their comment. Afraid it would have a negative effect. Yet anything could be worth trying.
