COBRA
cobra is one of the orginal freedom fighters, he started the club with jet and is the megamind behind all their attacks. as a child he witness the fire nation kill his parents and everyone in his village causing him to become a ruthless killer of anyone fire nation,
and the avatar is no exception.
FULLNAME. 練習, renshu, no one knows his real name other than jet. in japanese it means to learn with repetition.
NICKNAMES. cobra, him and jet were coming up with cool nicknames for themselves and they came up with cobra for renshu because he's quiet but lethal. not to be mistaken as a snake or a fake person.

APPEARANCE. cobra is 174cm tall and 56kg. his body type is slim but he's toned, his muscles aren't prominent when he's just standing there but when he fights he's quite powerful. no one would be able to guess that he actually has abs and muscles under all that clothes. he isn't tall, more on the average side yet his legs are long compared to his torso so he looks taller than he is.
his eyes are dark brown almost black, with hooded eyelids. naturally his complexion is pale but it darkened overtime due to constantly being in the sun and rolling around in the dirt. his skin has a dirty tone to it, even after washing he never seems to look that clean most likely from the layers of dirty basically embedded into his skin. the only real way to get that out is going to a spa and having someone scrub the out of him but he doesn't have that kind of luxury.
he has noticable scars all over his body, nothing too huge to need stitches but instead many scratches or clear marks of previous scabs and fighting wounds. his palms are hard and filled with calluses from climbing trees, there are barely days where his calluses aren't bleeding at least a little but he's used to the pain. even if it hurt him a lot he wouldn't say anything about it.

devoted + obedient: cobra is very selective with who he decides to trust and let in but once he does he's got your back for life. he sees everyone in the freedom fighters as his family and would go out of his way to make sure his family is well taken care of. since his parents passed away he always longed to belong somewhere and now that he has it he doesn't want to give it up, especially jet. he views jet as his rock, and he has a fear of losing him since he's the only person he truly has left. but him seeking security in jet has made his devotion unhealthy. he ignores his own needs and wants to accommodate jet who has an agenda of his own. his morals no longer matter because jet is their trusted leader and he would never steer them wrong.
adaptable + determined + reliable: due to jet's unpredictable and lowkey psychotic ways, cobra has to constantly stay on his toes in order to have his back. he's able to go along with whatever jet wants and can easily adapt to situations where people would normally be panicking. well, in his head he does panic but it doesn't show on his face. everything that he does he puts all his effort and is determined to reach any goal of his. if he says he'll do something then he'll do it probably ten times better than anticipated. commitment is something that's very serious to him. he isn't the type to give up easily, on people and situations.
observant + farsighted + calculating: as the co-leader, cobra has to be the one to see the future outcomes and intricate details in jet's broad plans that usually don't have much substance and rationality, since he most definitely isn't the most rational person in the world. cobra has a talent for noticing the little things, from small technical issues to how someones body language contradicts their words. he prefers to sit back and analyze people to see if they can be trusted. how they can possibly use them to reach their ultimate goal which is to get rid of all fire nation. before anyone joins the freedom fighters they have to meet cobra first because he can just tell if people have good intentions. which is why jet trusts his judgement so much, but he doesn't always take it.
calm + patient: cobra is a relatively calm person, he doesn't let his emotions get to him. it takes a lot for him to get angry or cry. his resting face has a slight frown to it so it looks like he's upset but he isn't, probably just far away in his head. his father taught him the importance of consistency, patience, and strategy, so when someone is struggling he won't get upset. as one of the best fighters in the group he trains the other members and he's done so from dusk till dawn before. he'll push you past your limit, not because he wants to make you suffer but because he wants you to reach your full potential and do your best. jet has no idea how he can be so patient since he's more hyperactive and has to be doing something different every two seconds but cobra thanks meditation, discipline and his father.
discreet + reserved: many people don't know the true cobra, his true feelings or thoughts he keeps it all to himself. he always thinks before he speaks, his speech is selective so he can get the information he needs out of others without them even recognizing that they gave it up. often he doesn't talk about him because he really doesn't think he's that interesting and usually his brain is going 10000 miles an hour its hard to pinpoint what exactly he's thinking at the moment.
enigmatic + stoic + aloof + asocial: due to his reserved ways he's quite the mystery. its hard to know what he's thinking because his face stays the same most of the time. he's not one to smile often, as previously said his default face is a slight frown, some might even say he has resting face. his face alone makes him hard to approach, he prefers that people don't approach him anyways since he finds small talk unbearably boring. most of the freedom fighters agree that he's scarier than jet despite his height. he's the kind of person that needs his alone time in order to reflect and think peacefully. don't get him wrong, he loves spending time with the freedom fighters, but being too social tires him out if anything. he's never been to a party before but if he was at one he'd be standing in the corner avoiding eye contact with others just so they won't approach him, and no he doesn't want to dance.
altruistic: even though cobra looks mean and scary, he's actually a sweetheart. he often putting others before himself and is very poltie and considerate. he makes sure all the freedom fighters eat before he eats and he'll be there whenever one of them needs him. it could be 4am and someone wants to practice their swordsmanship, he'll get up and help them even if he's exhausted. his caring nature and his devotion to jet are constantly at odds in his head, the last thing he wants to do is hurt innocent people but he also doesn't want to lose jet. its part of the reason why he stays up in the trees instead of actively fighting, he would only attack someone if they're hurting one of his fighters, other than that he only fights with fire nation. his love for jet triumphs his care for random earth kingdom citizens, which is the only reason he's willing to go along with such plans anyways. but it still eats him up inside.
humble + rational + pessimistic: cobra tends to look at the bad side of things, its not because he's a negative person but because he's so rational. he likes to weigh out the good and bad outcomes of every situation before moving forward. he learned from a young age that life isn't easy so someone has to envision the possible negative outcomes. his pessimistic view on life goes for himself as well, he always thinks he can improve no matter how good he is at something and downplays his own capabilities. he has a logical approach to things almost 100% of the time, he isn't good with expressing his emotions and prefers to ignore them. he has many emotions and can empathize with others but acts like he can't in order to avoid talking about his own.
combative + cautious + passive: his pessimistic ways and his untrusting nature causes him to be very cautious. he's skeptical of everything and everyone, to the point of living in a constant state of anxiety. he has a bad habit of overthinking, he likes to make sure that everything is properly planned before executing. any little misunderstanding will stress him out, but since he's adaptable he can usually make up for mistakes on the way fairly easily. he's actually really thankful towards jet because he's more of a do-er than a thinker unlike cobra, it helps him get things done instead of constantly being in his head. the only problem is that he's doing things that stress him out more instead of relieving his anxieties since it isn't well planned out, his advice isn't taken or it just goes against his beliefs. when dealing with jet he's often very passive. despite cobra making a valid point based on analysis jet lets his feelings override logic and cobra is left grinding his teeth. honestly he lets jet walk all over him, the excuse that he uses is because he's just a co-leader and says jet is right, but deep down he knows he's wrong. he just doesn't want to lose him. however, this passiveness isn't for everyone, he's quick to defend his family and will fight anyone that messes with them.
BACKGROUND.
before becoming cobra, he was known as renshu. a small earth kingdom kid who was always shorter than the other kids his age. he was the son and only child to kazan and yan, both loving parents that adored their little boy. his mother yan was a stay at home wife and his father kazan was a self defense teacher to the kids of their village which was where he met jet who would soon become his best friend. renshu got buillied for his height and jet was the only person who defended him, since then they've been stuck together. jet was actually his only friend really.
both of his parents were nonbenders, renshu had the ability but he never used it despite getting bullied by his peers. instead of hiring an earthbending teacher kazan taught his son the fundamentals of self defense including hand to hand combat, how to use a balisong knife and the importance of body language. his father wanted him to be so strong that even without earthbending he would be an asset to the earth kingdom military. kazan put an emphasis on using self defense for the greater good, not for petty revenge or hurting innocent people. it was something that renshu learned from a young age.
his training didn't last long though because at the age of seven he watched his family get killed during a fire nation raid. the fire nation snuck up on them seemingly out of nowhere, kazan and anyone that could tried to help save their village from the fire nation. even the students at his self defense school tried to fight them off resulting in some of their deaths. kazan was doing well on his own but it was only a matter of time until he would crumble under the power of so many soldiers coming at him all at once, and he did.
when renshu ran to his father who was laying on the floor coughing up blood, he gave him his knife and told him to, "take your mother and jet and run as far away from here as you can." renshu was crying uncontrollably flinching every few seconds at the loud sound of bursts from explosions and the wailing of other villagers. he refused to believing his dad was dying and he shook his head, "i won't leave you, dad please get up." he put pressure on the wound trying to stop the bleeding but quickly pulled away once his father wailed in pain. "go son, save the others. don't let the fire nation win.." his voice trailed off with his eyes slowly closing as he was losing consciousness. renshu shook his father screaming and pleading for him to get up but he was no longer responding.
he stood up and wiped the tears from his eyes. looking around was pure chaos, he saw villagers with missing legs, terrible burns, and wounds gushing with blood. he whimpered at the view of everything he knew coming to an end, his home, the people that he grew up with all gone. his eyes lit up at the thought of his home and he ran back to his house where his mother was supposed to be.
renshu bursted through the door in a panic, and right before he could call for his mother he saw her lifeless body sitting on the livingroom bench with her face severely burned. the skull of her bottom jaw was peeking through the skin, he quickly looked away shaking his head trying to erase the image he just saw. like his brain was trying to trick him into think that that woman wasn't his mother. so badly he wanted to cry at her feet and hug her one last time but he knew he had to be strong, find jet and run as far away as they can.
he eventually found jet at his house crying over his parents who were dead on the floor and they both escaped the village together. they watched their village get taken over by the fire nation on a nearby tree. it was then that their deep rooted hatred for the fire nation started. seeing the only place they've ever known as home get destroyed right in front of their eyes was enough to scar them and motivate them at the same time.
renshu and jet became refugees at the age of seven and eight, wandering around the earth kingdom together. they stole food and anything they needed to get by, showered in lakes and hid out in the woods. it was hard emotionally on them, there were times when jet would just burst out in tears at the memory and renshu had to be the strong one despite being younger. jet was convinced they were the only ones alive from their village and that the fire nation was out to get them because of it. being a naive seven year old renshu believed him, but now he can't say that he's so sure anymore.
being two kids on their own it would be easy to hurt them or take advantage in any way so they enhanced their self defense skills. they went off what kazan already taught them, which was just the basics. the village they camped near had a wushu school, sometimes they had classes in the yard of the building so jet and renshu would watch from a nearby tree and mimic the movements incorporating it into their practice later. eventually they stole weapons and started practicing with those as well, fighting against each other and penetrating trees.
while wandering the countryside part of a nearby village jet came across a fire nation soldier who was harrassing an old man, both boys now ten and eleven jumped from a nearby tree and attacked him. it was their first true opponent and filled the boys up with so much adrenaline that they decided to form a group with the sole purpose of getting rid of the fire nation.
they traveled around the earth kingdom looking for other refugee kids to recruit, with the first official member being smellerbee. it started as a small group of kids trying to save the world, helping people along the way if they could. but as they got older and the group got bigger, jet let the power of being leader go to his head and his motives became more and more twisted. they were no longer just attacking the fire nation, they were hurting innocent people in the process and it never sat well with renshu deep down. his dad taught him otherwise and part of him felt like he was disappointing his father, but the hard truth is that his father isn't here any, jet is, and that's who he has to stay loyal to.
TRIVIA.
01. he acts like he isn't a big fan of skinship but he actually loves it, he just doesn't know how to act or respond to it making him awkward and stiff when getting hugged. between guys its easy since they tend to roughhouse each other but he doesn't know what to do with girls. even though smellerbee is like one of the guys he can't look past the fact that she's a girl.
02. he has a soft spot for animals which is why he hates hunting even though he can easily do it with his spear throwing skills. he's never the one to gut them or cut them up, he just can't do it. it makes him want to puke. he rather steal food thats already cooked and not have to worry about where it came from instead of seeing it first hand for himself. whenever any sort of cooking is being done he most likely won't be around. to him animals are more pure than humans so it makes him sad to kill them.
03. he meditates every morning when he wakes up and whenever he's stressed so he can be realigned. at times when he feels that his emotions are becoming overwhelming to the point where he actually wants to express his anger or sadness he has to remind himself that as the co-leader he's supposed to be the strong one. he's constantly recommending for jet to meditate since he can be erratic but he "doesn't have time for meditation".
04. he has a bad habit of staring when he's lost in thought. for some reason he frowns when he stares so it looks like he's glaring at you but he doesn't even know you're there most likely.
05. he suffers from insomnia, while the others are asleep he's probably up looking at the stars or sharpening everyone's weapons, maybe even laundry if he's up for it but thats not his designated job. he's gone three days without sleep before and the freedom fighters said it was a scary time because he kept laughing and smiling at everything which is completely unlike him.

jet is cobra's best friend and basically brother from another mother. he's the only person from his early childhood that he has left giving him the top spot on cobra's heart. ever since their parents passed they've been a sense of home and familiarity for each other. they share the same deep hatred for the fire nation but jet is willing to hurt more people than cobra. his obsession and logic became more and more twisted overtime and cobra can only blame himself for being jet's enabler.
cobra knows that its wrong to hurt innocent people but he finds it hard to say no to jet, instead of outwardly saying that their plan is putting the lives of a whole village in danger he tries to adjust it so they can complete their mission while also not harming any innocent bystanders. the times that he does try to stand up and say that their plan isn't a good idea, jet reminds him what the fire nation did to their village and cobra just shuts down. he isn't one for expressing how he feels and jet knows that, he knows cobra enough to be able to take advantage of his admiration for him and use it to get what he wants. in the end it never fails, cobra puts his standards and beliefs aside to please jet thinking that its for the greater good.
strangely enough both jet and cobra wouldn't know what to do without each other. their personalities are polar opposites so they work well together and fill in each others gaps. they haven't been apart for more than a day in years and no matter what happens they have a sense of security in each other. even if the freedom fighters break up someday, they both know that they'll still be best friends no matter what and stay together as a duo. jet's manipulative ways doesn't take away the deep love that cobra has for him, it became something that he just accepts more than he is concerned about it. but cobra is like his backbone, without cobra jet would lack structure and crumble under the pressure of his own obsessive thoughts and paranoid delusions. cobra would do better than the afore mentioned but going into the unknown without his partner in crime is a scary thought that he doesn't even want to imagine.
longshot / 16 / archer in the freedom fighters / quiet, observant, calculating / 8/10.
longshot and cobra are very similar, their personalities match up almost identically and they can just read each others minds. they spend a lot of time together watching the battles from high up so he helps cobra with the details of strategic planning and training the rest of the team. longshot and cobra seem to be connected on a higher level, they can look at each other and know exactly what each other is thinking like they can read their minds. even jet doesn't understand how the two can sit next to each other without saying a word and suddenly laugh at the same time like someone cracked a joke. longshot and cobra actually talk to each other a lot up in the trees when no one's around so the deep thoughts that he can't tell jet or just didn't have the time to, are probably known by longshot.
smellerbee / 15 / member of the freedom fighters / caring, conflict adverse, conforming / 6/10.
smellerbee is the unofficially mom of the group, not just because she's a girl but because she usually takes the mediator role in things. when jet and cobra are disagree she tries to get jet to understand cobra's point of view because she knows cobra won't stand up for himself. jet accuses her of always taking his side because she's constantly defending him, even saying that she has a crush on him which is completely flase. if anything she likes longshot but jet is just trying to divert the situation by saying that. smellerbee cares about cobra a lot and checks up on him with words on reassurance, she can tell that he doesn't like hurting innocent people and honestly she doesn't either but that also doesn't mean that she wants to leave. but since jet keeps bringing up the whole she likes him thing, he's actually kind of awkward and cold with her and distances himself a little.
pipsqueak / 18 / member of the freedom fighters / slow witted, loving, reliable / 5/10.
pipsqueak is a little slow and it gets on cobra's nerves sometimes but he loves him nonetheless. since pipsqueak is so big cobra is extra hard on him during practice and even during fights he's constantly trying to impress cobra. in the middle of a fight he would look up at the tree after successfully injuring a fire nation soldier and put a thumbs up looking happier than ever just for his approval. after practice he might whine and complain because cobra didn't compliment him and jet would come around and say "it's ok pipsqueak, i think you did great" and his mood would automatically go up. the day that cobra genuinely compliments pipsqueak on his fighting skills would probably be the happiest day of his life.
the duke / 8 / baby of the freedom fighters / energetic, childish / 4/10.
the duke is the baby of the freedom fighters, he's cute yet tries to act tough which just makes him cuter. cobra is one of the only few people that can call him duke instead of the duke. he always says how he wants to have a kanabo just like cobra, but for now he just has a balisong knife that they stole from an earth kingdom villager. on their spare time cobra teaches him how to do tricks with it. he has a soft spot for the duke and is the only person that gets hugs from cobra.

earthbending
– cobra's earthbending is pretty good for someone that hasn't had training from a master. he taught himself by watching others and just trying different things. he makes his own moves and techniques making his bending odd compared to regular earth benders. he can easily do all of the standard earthbending abilities and some master level ones. he's in charge of teaching any other earthbenders in the freedom fighters and he also uses it to help everyone practice being quick on their feet and dodge attacks by manipulating earth mannequins and basically throwing rocks at them from all directions.
he meditates everyday and is very spirtually and inwardly connected so he has the ability to do remote earthbending from wherever he's suspended from, most likely a tree nearby where the action is sitting next to longshot. as long as earth is nearby he can manipulate it to do tricks and hit opponents like he was on the ground. he prefers to stay up in the trees to watch the battles to see the holes in the strategies and figure out what each team member has to work on. it might seem like he's not doing anything but he's actually taking mental notes and saving the others asses by throwing spears or earthbending.
a lot of the freedom fighters strategies include his earthbending abilities, for example, he built a wall around a group of fire nation soldiers so they couldn't escape while the rest of the crew jumped in and attacked them. an example of him saving his team members asses would be when someone isn't doing so well against their opponent he would make them sink into the ground and throw a spear through them.
kanabo aka the bone crusher
– the few times he does go on the ground to fight he doesn't like using earthbending, if he's going to fight you one on one he prefers using his kanabo. this is cobra's favorite weapon, he finds it so simple yet so powerful and capable of so much damage. one hit from it can at least fracture a bone and that's if he decides to be nice. instead of getting close and going through the back and forth motions of fighting he can easily just earthbend at them but he doesn't like doing that. there's a disconnect with earthbending, you hit someone with a big boulder and they're crushed but there's not much satisfaction from it.
if he's going to fight one on one he wants to feel the vibrations of each successful hit he makes on his opponent, feel their bones deteriorating under the skin with each swing, only then will he feel like he truly won. he also feels like he's making his father proud everytime he wins a fight without earthbending. only using earthbending somehow feels like an easy way out for him, even though it isn't easy at all. that doesn't mean that he won't use it at all though, he would do things like make an earth tunnel and end up behind his opponent, and once they turn around he smashes them across the face with his kanabo. the other person is either left dead or with a fractured skull while cobra swings his kanabo over his shoulder feeling a rush of ecstasy.
he's had a lot of practice with this weapon and has beat numerous benders and soldiers with this item alone so its fair to say that he's pretty skilled in using it. the freedom fighters say that he's scary when he uses his kanabo because that's when the sadistic side of cobra comes out like he gets off on his opponents slowly crumbling under him as his kanabo crushes their bones.
before going down to fight a powerful opponent with this weapon he makes a specific bird call which means he's coming down from the tree. this mostly happens when there's one really strong opponent left and cobra wants a piece of them or theres a specific person that he has it out for. most of the time its a fire nation soldier, cobra never fights other earth benders unless they present themselves as a threat. all of the freedom fighters swarm around them and start making hissing sounds which confuses the opponents, but it basically a way to hype cobra up since his name is a type of snake.
spears
– cobra has three spears that he carries on his back with his kanabo. he mostly uses them as a throwing object to directly kill opponents from the top of a tree when the rest of the team is in trouble. although longshot uses archery that does enough damage especially when hit in the right spot, spears are larger and sharper so they're basically lethal. he uses it secondary to longshot though so only if its really needed since he only has three. he loves to collect the spears of the dead fire nation soliders but he prefers not to carry so many since it can get heavy.
balisong knife
– his father used to always carry his balisong knife with him everywhere. the day he passed away he gave it to cobra who has never went anywhere without it since. but besides doing tricks cobra doesn't use it since he doesn't want to mess it up, he doesn't like when other people touch it either. looking at it makes him feel sad yet nostalgic and empowered at the same time. but someday if he has the chance to kill a powerful fire nation soldier like an admiral, maybe even the firelord himself or any of the members of the rough rhinos then he'll use it on behalf of his father.
fighting skills
– cobra is a lot stronger than people think. on top of earthbending, spear throwing and kanabo fighting, cobra has a lot of strength. he practices everyday and has identical abilities to jet since they spent their early years practicing together and still now they're the best fighters on their team. he can easily leap from tree to tree to get away from opponents and ambush them, since he's used to staying in a tree with longshot he has good balance. without any weapons he would still be able to hold his own in a fight.
stealth
– cobra isn't called cobra for no reason. him and jet are the two who mainly do bird calls, being up in the tree and able to see the whole battle he's the one to let the team know when to retreat and when to move onto the next phase of their plan and just communicate with the others in general. him and jet made specific bird calls that have different meanings.
he's light on his feet and quiet, easily being able to sneak up behind someone without them hearing a thing. as well as hop from tree to tree barely making any noise. these skills come in handy when the freedom fighters are in need of food and they have to steal some. one of the names that jet suggested for him was ninja since he was basically one but he thought it was lame.
intelligence
– cobra is easily the smartest in the freedom fighters. second would be longshot and third would be jet, but jet lets his emotions get to him too much. since he watches the fights often he can tell people's movements before they make them just by the way they prepare to do it which makes it easier for him to fight anyone. he can watch someone fight and imitate their moves not too long after, which is mainly how he taught himself earthbending and fighting in general. he actually mostly taught jet what he knows since he's more observant. his observant nature also makes it easy for him to read a room or situation and quickly sense if they got set up or are in danger. he notices things that most people won't and figures out how to use it to their advantage, he also has phenomenal hearing skills that let him hear subtle movements easily.
his father taught him about kinesics, the ability to read body language, so he can easily tell when someone's lying or their true motives just by their facial expressions and body language. he likes to study his opponent before attacking just to come up with a general plan based on their weaknesses. for example, if they tend to put more pressure on their right leg when they walk, even if its subtle, then they must have a deficiency on the left so he would specifically tell jet or whoever is fighting that person to keep attacking that specific leg.
generally jet comes up with the basic idea and cobra deals with the intricate details to make sure their plan is executed correctly or at least in the most effective way. most of the time he would go to the place of attack beforehand just to have a look for himself so he can have a general layout of the area and come up with a specific battle plan based on the terrain.

How do you feel about the war?
– he looked up from the floor at the person asking, his glare so sharp that it could pierce through the skin. "the fire nation burned down my village and killed my parents, how do you think i feel?" his voice was deep and quiet, despite the tragedy of his statement he showed no emotions.
Do you think it will end soon? Do you want it to?
– he leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms, almost amused by the question like he had already given it a lot of thought and had an answer prepared, just no one ever asked him. "i don't think it'll end soon, theres still parts of the earth kingdom that the fire nation didn't demolish and colonize yet. it seems that they went back to taking over small villages since failing to break into ba sing se. i'm sure they won't stop until they take over the whole world but i will keep fighting until the fire nation is obliterated." the side of his mouth turned up into a slight grin at the thought of his last sentence, he lowered his face smiling to himself like he didn't want anyone to see the amount of gratification he got from the thought. getting rid of the fire nation ahs always been his ultimate goal. a goal that he's very determined to accomplish.
If there is a new Avatar, it would be someone from the Fire Nation. How do you feel about that?
– his smirk immediately disappeared at the mention of a fire nation avatar. his expression became serious once again with his eyebrows furrowing slightly into a frown, a clear disapproval at the mere idea. "a fire nation avatar is no exception, i'm sure they went through the same brainwashing as anyone else in the fire nation and all they want to do is hurt whoever they can so their nation can end up on top." he learned forward placing his elbows on his knees, "but if i can stop that from happening i will." he looked up at the person asking with penetrating eyes, like he truly meant what he said, and he did.
