MONGMONG
its hard to be happy when both your parents are gone and you're homeless with autisim and ptsd but somehow mongmong manages. he's a friendly guy with a not so friendly surroundings that makes an unsuccessful living by playing music on the street. when he meets yyn she's one of the few people that are actually nice to him causing him to become attached to her. although it might not look like it, he knows a lot more than he seems and can be a great asset to team avatar, and he's willing to go the extra mile for the people he loves––even if it ultimately results in his demise.
FULLNAME. 庞大, pangda, no one calls him his real name or really knows it because everyone calls him by his nicknames. his name means huge, his mom chose that name because he was 4.5kg at birth.

his family was lower middle class, they didn't have the money to afford expensive treatments and tests to get mongmong the help that he needed. they tried to send him to a regular school but were often met with obstacles since mongmong didn't learn like the other kids. the fire nation put an emphasis on structured learning but mongmong couldn't sit still and read the whole class. instead he ripped out the pages and made origami or a paper airplane. so yanglin took him out of school and decided to homeschool him herself. part of their house was a small restaurant owned by yanglin, when she wasn't fulfilling orders she taught mongmong herself. she was a smart woman, money was the only thing stopping her from reaching her full potential. instead of teaching him like the schools, she tried to make learning fun by turning things into songs and playing games to help him memorize things. at one point he was learning faster than the kids in his grade.
but by the time he reached 15 years old his mom got sick, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. it progressed quickly, so much so that jianyu had to come back home from the military. the treatment that would save her life was way out of their budget so they had no choice but to watch her deteriorate. jianyu took on a bunch of odd jobs and mongmong got a job at a tea shop to try and help accumulate money for her treatment. when he was going back home from work he saw a group of men playing paisho outside, there was a bunch of money on the table being gambled and mongmong decided to take chance. he ran by quickly stealing the money but didn't make it too far before he got caught and beat up by them. it was his first offense but the judge didn't show him any mercy and put him in a youth detention center for a year. during his time there he found out that his mom passed away. he was really close to his mom so the news was hard for him. being at the detention center made things worse for him because he got bullied for being different.
by the time they turned 16, most kids in the detention center joined the military to serve their nation and mongmong was no exception. before joining he never practiced his firebending, he developed the ability late in life at 8 years old. his mom told him not to firebend unless he absolutely had to since he didn't have any training and could get hurt. he listened to her and didn't firebend at all until he joined the military.
once again mongmong was seen as the odd one out in the military, not only for his disability but also because of his father that was never able to move up from junior lieutenant. they found themselves being the of the joke in many situations. his firebending skills were very good but others couldn't get past his disability keeping him at a private level throughout his whole military experience. he was a private under captain zhao in his early career followed by captain shang. both were terrible to work with but since his experience with zhao was so short lived he doesn't have much to complain about despite the constant screaming and threats.
captain shang, on the other hand, was abusive. the scar on his foot is from an incident with him. he had the tendency to treat mongmong like a servant instead of a soldier. he bossed him around more than the others allowing other privates of the same rank to mistreat him the same way. the amount of pranks that he had to deal with greatly surpassed the amount of earth kingdom villages they took over. while taking over a small earth kingdom village mongmong came across a pregnant woman who was hiding. instead of hurting her like anyone else on his team would he led her to the forest so she could run away and save her child. captain shang saw his good deed and was appalled, he had a rule that all pregnant women must go to stop the next generation of pure earth kingdom citizens from being born so the fire nation could be the most dominant nation instead. it wasn't a direct order, instead a personal preference of his. captain shang challenged him to an agni kai to show the consequences of disobeying orders. the other soldiers watched in amusement as mongmong cowered in fear as captain shang firebended at him. he refused to fight back against someone that he saw as his friend. but the result left him with a burnt foot that was never allowed proper time to heal so instead he developed a limp that stays with him today.
in 84 AG, mongmong got drafted to assist in the march of omashu with his father. it was the first time he worked with his dad. he was proud to be going there to help as a duo but they had no idea that they were basically going on a death mission. bujing proposed the idea to bring the new and weaker troops to the forefront to tire out the earth kingdom troops before having to deal with the stronger ones. mongmong was considered a weak soldier even though his firebending as good and his father had been stuck in the same position his whole career so he was definitely on the list. during the march of omashu mongmong saw death like he never did before. yes he's taken over earth kingdom villages but they were small and its not all the time that they killed people. however, as soon as they set foot in omashu thousands of troops were dead within hours, everyone that he was on the ship with was gone including his father. he didn't see his dad die in front of him but he saw his body lying there in a pool of others like he was nothing, just another statistic. he knows its the risk that comes with making the worlds a better place but it still hurt mongmong refused to leave his dad there, the only reason he wasn't left behind was because two other soldiers dragged him away when they were retreating.
after jeongjeong deserted the military they retreated and made their way back home. but mongmong didn't have a home to go to, he had a physical home but what was it without the people he loved. the experience in omashu left him with severe ptsd. before omashu he was showing signs of it, such as having nightmares. but his father was always there to comfort him and make him feel better. now that he had no one his ptsd got worse, he was deemed unfit to rejoin the military after getting tested and even developed a stutter that wasn't there previously. he had to pay the rent somehow but struggled to find work due to his diability. he worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant and kept his house for a few months but eventually got fired for breaking one too many dishes. days turned into weeks turned into months of not having rent and he eventually got evicted. they literally had to drag him out of the house because he refused to leave since it was the last memory he had of both his parents.

09. he has ptsd, he's afraid of sudden loud noises, if he hears it he'll cover his ears and rock himself. he might start screaming in his sleep from a bad dream. he's really hesitant to talk about the war and will most likely recite the fire nation oath when asked about it. talking about certain subjects like his parents make him develop a stutter.
RELATIONSHIPS.

yanglin was the person mongmong was closest to. it was hard to understand him at first but with constant effort she was able to get closer to him gradually. the fact that she was able to try and see the world from his point of view instead of changing him is what improved their relationship. yanglin taught mongmong everything he knows, he still thinks about his mother when doing different tasks. the way he talks about her one would think that she's still alive.
jianyu / 48 at death / navy jr lieutenant / hardworking, / 6/10 / fc: chun ho jin
mongmong's relationship with his father wasn't as smooth as with his mom. after yanglin passed jianyu had to take all the responsibilities that mongmong came with and he wasn't ready for it. jianyu was barely around when mongmong was younger, only when he had a break from the military and even then yanglin was always around. while yanglin was sick mongmong proved to be a liability and jianyu found himself screaming at mongmong taking his anger out on him even though he wasn't the one he was mad at. just being with his son was an embarrassment at times but to mongmong they were really close. he didn't see how annoyed his dad was at times and tried to make him happy either way. mongmong would say that he was close with his father though that wasn't the case.

mongmong first met yyn while playing his dramyin on the street, she gave him a few coins allowing him to get a hot meal that day. their second interraction was when he was looking for tomo at a nearby dumpster and yyn spotted him. mongmong kept going near yyn's house because tomo fell in love with yuru and mongmong wouldn't dare keep her away from her one true love. it allowed mongmong to get to know yyn who sometimes buys him food when she sees him begging around, listens to his random rants as well as he to her, and watch him play the dramyin. a so called friend if you might take it that far, at least mongmong considers her so. how her parents feel about a homeless guy linger around their house is a different story though, but no matter how many times the cops are called he finds himself going back to that area. she's the first person to be nice to him in a long time. she doesn't know it but he'd go the extra mile for her if he had to.
tomo / elephant rat / cute, cuddly, / 10/10 / fc: elephant shrew.
tomo is an elphant rat that befriended mongmong when he was living on the street. the only way he can tell her apart from other elephant rats is because he gently tied a piece of cloth around his neck making it look like she's wearing a bandana. even without it mongmong would know just by holding her, they have a connection that a lot of people don't understand. most people are afraid of elephant rats but tomo is the opposite, she's friendly and likes sniffing people. some elephant rats would steal food right from your hand but tomo would stand next to you waiting for you to feed her instead. she can usually be seen on mongmong's shoulder or his head. if he has to hide her for any reason she'd be in his pocket. when he sleeps she's usually resting right on his forehead or chest.
captain shang / 50 / captain in navy / cocky, manipulative, domineering / 3/10. fc: kim sang ho
mongmong hasn't seen captain shang since he left the military. he acts like he has a lot more power than he really does. he likes to be domineering to those that are a lower rank than him but gets intimidated by anyone that's stronger. he's a short and stubby man who enjoys showing off to make himself look cool. despite not being treated well mongmong would still say he was a good captain, mostly because he's scared at him after he got burned. captain shang could still manipulate mongmong if he wanted to.
SKILLSETS.
firebending
– mongmong is a very good firebender. his skills exceed what a lot of people would expect from him. he's able to remember the moves exactly how it was taught to him as well as their name. he was able to learn firebending easily to manys surprise. due to his tall height his movements are sloppy yet it still gets the job done and doesn't diminish his power. to his advantage his long arms allows him to keep a distance between him and the attacks, making getting burned less likely. his limp and lack of agility would give others an upper hand on him though. as well as his clumsiness causing him to lack stealth.
memory
– mongmong has impeccable memory, he has the ability to remember random things he's seen and heard. since he isn't good at describing things he can draw them out with great detail instead. be careful what you say around him because if you lie he'll bring up what you said before. not to be rude or anything but its just how he's wired, he can't lie.
he can map out everywhere he's been and take you to specific spots from pure memory. he might not be able to say how he remembers but if you just trust him then he can lead you to where you need to go. though most people won't accept his offer thinking he's some sort of serial killer trying to lure them into his far away cave.
survival skills
– mongmong has learned survival skills from the military. he's remembered all that was taught to him, randomly blurting out the long list of poisonous plants in alphabetical order when someone brings up the topic of herbalism. the only thing he seemingly can't do is hunt for food because his heavy steps make them run away before he's even close enough to see them. he insists on everyone setting up camp in the correct order that he was taught, everytime he has to be reminded that its okay not to do it the exact same way all the time.
dramyin
– mongmong has learned how to play the dramyin from his mother who loved to play it during her spare time. she used it to make up songs for mongmong to memorize his school work or sing him to sleep. once she passed it became one of the last memories of her so its something thats really important to him. he enjoys making random songs about anything, whether it be a person or thing he sees in front of him or a memory he had. he can hear someone sing and play along almost seamlessly like they've been practicing together for months. if he hears a sound he can play the exact pitch on his dramyin right away. he doesn't know how to read music, instead just remembers old songs and makes them up himself. he learned from muscle memory.
INTERVIEW.
How do you feel about the war?
– he shook his leg fidgeting with his hands as he looks down at them. "the fire nation is the greatest and most powerful nation in the world. the war is our way of sharing our greatness. the fire lord is only helping the world become a better place." he said quickly taking a sharp breath between sentences as if reciting something from memory in a monotonous manner.
Do you think it will end soon? Do you want it to?
– he hummed scratching his head as he rocked gently in his seat, not quite sure how to respond in fear of the repercussions that'll come with the wrong answer. "my life i give to my country. with my hands i fight for lord ozai and our forefathers before him. with my mind i seek ways to better my country. and with my feet may our march of civilization continue." he casually recites the whole fire nation oath in the same monotonous manner as before. he looked up at the person asking with big eyes, trying to see if his answer was correct or at least satisfactory by their reaction.
If there is a new Avatar, it would be someone from the Fire Nation. How do you feel about that?
– "the avatar is the master of all elements, even if they come from the fire nation they have to memorize all four elements. any firebender is family and must help the fire nation..." he takes a pause after reciting what he's previously heard someone else say, taking a second to ponder about the question before responding how he feels about the matter. "i think fire lord ozai and captain shang will be happy to get more help." he smiles at his last sentence, the thought of others being happy instantly makes him smile. to be honest he doesn't really have an opinion on the matter. it's not that he doesn't care, he just doesn't think about those things. the whole interview he's been responding with what he thinks they would want to hear instead. as he sat there twiddling his thumbs, he couldn't help but ask, "did mongmong pass the test?"
