When people meet Yera the first thing they notice is her calm aura, no matter the craziness going on in her head she never shows it on the outside. She is aware of how she's percieved at all times, the way she acts, what she says, all of it has her mom in mind so she'd rarely do anything on a whim. This can be good on stage because she sticks to the script and does all her duties well, but in her personal life it can be quite debilitating. There are many things that she wouldn't do because she's afraid of her mother, even if that means she stays at the dorms alone while everyone goes out.

Not once has her mom ever complimented her or told her she was doing a good job and it made her constantly try to be good enough to maybe finally hear those words. Even when she punished her she blamed herself thinking she deserved it for not being good enough. She became used to holding her true feelings in and putting on a facade that she's happy and everything is ok. She was seemingly perfect but in her head was lingering a bunch of dark thoughts and sadness that she never told anyone about. When it comes to herself she tends to be pessimistic always thinking she's not good enough or that she'll get bad reviews, a little overly humble to the point of just being plain insecure. even after becoming a trainee she stayed in the studio for so long because she didn't believe when others told him her was good. 

Growing up with no friends affected her too, she became such a people pleaser that she pushed away her own needs to satisfy others. when she makes a friend she wants to do anything to keep them, even if they mistreat her she forgives them easily. she doesn't get mad easily and pushes things under the rug barely standing up for herself just to say she has a friend.

As someone that was constantly trying to impress growing up, she is very responsible and driven. Anything she puts her mind to she'll do, she doesn't want to disappoint herself or others. Her moral compass is high and it leads her to be a perfectionist that overworks herself to fit her own expectations that are basically her moms. Never being enough has lead her to have low self esteem, she puts others before herself. She doesn't want to make her mom seem like a monster so she doesn't complain, if she can't eat the snacks with the rest of the group she offers it to another member since they look like they liked it instead of saying that her mom would kill her. It makes her seem fake caring but she is actually pretty thoughtful. Friends was a rare commodity for her so she treasures the ones she has by getting them gift. She's a huge gift giver since she isn't always in control of her own life so she might not be there for you all the time. If she sees something that reminds her of you she'd get it, even if its on the pricier side.

Having a conversation with Yera could be a bit awkward if you don't know her well. She doesn't know what to say after the basics, she has a fear of being disliked so to her its better to be liked and plain than opinionated and disliked. But once you get to know him you'll realize that under all that professionalism she's still just a growing weird kid. She loves hearing others stories and asking a bunch of questions because she probably hasn’t experienced it for herself, if you need someone to rant to she’s your girl because she’d actually listen the whole time. She gets amazed and excited easily but has to contain it, sometimes its seen in interviews that she gets excited and starts rambling but she catches himself at the thought of people saying he talks too much or sight of her mom watching. Sometimes her curiosity gets the best of her and she "breaks character" and gets a little too goofy with her members.  

There are many things she's curious about and sometimes that gets the best of her. She might go along with something despite knowing it could get her in trouble with her mom because she's curious or just wants to try ie her obsession with trying random things she sees on tiktok to see if they’re true. She’s just pretty unpredictable because her looks never matches what’s in her mind, she could be staring into space and then a second later trying to her elbow to see if it’s possible. She loves to make dad jokes because she finds dry humor funny and actually enjoys being spontaneous. She might seem one way on camera but her members would tell you that she is the hidden wild card. It’s hard to ever know what she’s thinking.

When it comes to her own emotions she holds them back, staying away from conflict by not addressing it until it goes away or just apologizing to get it over with. She's not used to saying her struggles, private life or how she feels so many of her friends don't truly know whats going on with her. That’s why many people might think she doesn’t like them at first because she doesn’t say much but when you ask her she’d say she had fun being with them and genuinely means it.

BACKGROUND

Yeom Chaehyun had a vision for her life, to be the biggest female producer in Korea. She worked hard throughout her 23 years of life to make sure it happened the way she imagined. Though getting pregnant by her ex-boyfriend wasn't on her to-do list. It was her last year of college, she was an honors student with a long list of job interviews waiting to snatch her up after graduation. But little did anyone know that little miss perfect was sitting in the bathroom stall on the verge of tears at her positive pregnancy test.

Unlike her, her boyfriend was ecstatic, a fellow college student with no money and a dream. Not yet at least, medical school was a promising path and with all he learned in his 4 years he refused to let her get rid of it. Big clothes got Chaehyun through her last semester with no suspicion or stain on her reputation. Her parents were disappointed though, both of theirs, marriage to keep face was the main thing they were worried about. Two young adults in their early twenties living together with a newborn went as well as you'd think. Both had busy schedules so Yera spent a lot of time with her grandparents.

It didn't take long for her parents relationship to crumble. Having Yera out all the love they could possibly have for each other. Different parenting styles was an issue as well. So after a year of being together they divorced and Chaehyun had full custody.

Her mom was hard on her with grades, a tiger mom if you will. She only valued Yera for how well she did at things, not just because she was her child. So Yera often found herself trying to impress her mom constantly. But how can you impress someone who didn't want you in the first place, seeing Yera just constantly reminded her of a stupid time in her life. She was an embarrassment without even embarrassing her. But because of her mothers ways Yera was constantly trying to be the golden child. She made sure she got in the top 3 every year she was in school, she never got in trouble, everything she did she had making her mom proud in the back of her mind.

Many people usually have fond memories from school but Yera didn't. She struggled to make friends because she wouldn't break curfew or hang out with them in general. Anytime she had a friend she found herself being left out one way or another. During those hard times Yera used music to get through it. She discovered EXO and BTS online and fell in love with their content. Not just music but their variety stuff made her happy. For a long time she had no idea what she wanted to do in life. But getting so much happiness from idols made her want to become one too so she could make other people happy.

With a mom in the entertainment industry thats the person she went to. Her mom actually didn't agree at first, not because she was worried about how difficult the entertainment could be but because she didn't want to be embarrassed. Chaehyun ranted to her long time friend Ha Sungsoo and he is the one that offered to sign Yera since he wanted to debut a new girl group.

　✿ Yera joined Pledis feeling totally unprepared. She was one of those trainees that had to learn how to be talented. She was definitely the underdog since the beginning so to see her go into stronger trainee groups even though her abilities weren't the best made others side eye her. Her mom had a lot of influence over her during training, every song she did, how long she practiced, her diet, it was all dictated by her and her progress reported to her.

After a while she learned how to sing but she dreaded dancing the most, she just looked awkward no matter what she did. There were many times her mom showed up to watch her practice and she'd scream at her for doing it so awkwardly but she couldn't help it. Even that rubbed others the wrong way because they couldn't see their parents couldn't even visit but her mom was there supervising her. She did improve but its questionable to say if she improved enough to be in Sixteen.

FIRST MEETING They first met during a monthly evaluation when Seventeen were giving them feedback. Wonwoo told her that she had to work on her stage presence and had a lot of work to do. She cried after that in the car home and it left a big impression on her.
INTERACTIONS At first Yera found Wonwoo scary because of their first meeting. For a while they were super awkward, she always addressed him properly and bowed many times and never spoke casually to him. Everytime the editor showed them interacting, it was full of exaggerated awkward silences and Yera talking to him like he was the CEO. After learning how her mom treated her Wonwoo developed a soft spot for her because he saw first hand the pressure and abuse she had to deal with. So half way through the show, he really softened up and let her drop the honorifics.

They got closer once her relationship with Chan started to take off because he would help them go on secret rendezvous and cover for Chan. Whenever they had an issue Wonwoo would help them work through it and give advice because he wants both of them to be happy and thinks they're a cute couple. In return she helps him get information on Seunghwa so he can impress her.

HISTORY When Yera met Chan they barely talked. She just bowed everytime she saw him and kept going along her way. It wasn’t until he walked in on her practicing alone late at night before their first comeback did they start talking. He didn’t know anyone else was in the room, he put his name on the list to reserve it and he was still 15 minutes late. Yera was practicing so intently that she didn’t realize she went way overtime. He couldn’t help but chuckle at her many bows and apologies as he brushed her concerns away.

“You have a comeback soon, right? You can show me what you were working on if you want, I could give you some pointers.” Of course Yera wouldn’t say no to Seventeen’s main dancer. He spent the next hour giving her feedback and helping her dance better. By the time they were done the dance genius practically knew the whole thing. It turned out that Chan tend to like practicing on his own at that time. He started to come a little early before his session to see what she was working on and help her out. An unintentional routine developed and after a while he started to bring snacks acting like he accidentally got two. Yera’s dancing slowly started to improve and her members saw it too. He knew how strict her mom was and didn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea so he insisted on giving credit to her late night practices instead of him. Chan too showed her his choreography and she gave her opinion, the first insights he got into her odd way of thinking that he found amusing.

It didn’t take long for their late night dance sessions to turn into a picnic of some sorts. Bringing snacks and talking for almost an hour wasn’t originally apart of the plan though it became a regular occurrence. The topic varied from life to schedules to interests, later it became deeper things like feelings and desires. They were able to open up to each other, felt like they wouldn’t be judged. But when they weren’t in the studio on the far end of the hallway they were just any ordinary sunbae and hoobae. No one was able to notice the secret glances and chuckles for seemingly no reason but it was because they knew a secret they weren’t supposed to or thought about something funny the other said. Both of them looked forward to their late night dance practices and neither of them missed a single one.

For a few weeks Yera and Hongsik were mcs for music bank, most of the time the two mcs selected weren’t even friends so when Chan saw Hongsik kiss Yera’s cheek in a secluded hallway, he froze. The two hugged with Yera being the less optimistic one and over his shoulder she saw Chan staring at them. She ran after him as normal as she could, trying not to raise any suspicion. But Chan was nowhere to be found, her texts and calls went unanswered and the only thing she could do was go to the studio at night like usual and hope he showed up, which he did. But instead of talking to her he just walked past ready to start his dance practice.

“You could’ve told me you have a boyfriend and all of this was just fun and games to you.”

Chan was hurt, he felt betrayed. He developed feelings for her, how could he not when they practically told each other the most vulnerable things. But Yera liked him too, she explained the situation, how it was all for publicity and her mom made her. How she never felt a thing for him and hate her situation. How Chan made her feel heard and she actually liked him. A nervous rant that came from fear of losing someone she really cared about. To shut her up Chan kisses her, their first kiss and far from their last. Only the start to a secret affair that would plague her relationship with Hongsik.

Their nightly meetings never stopped, in fact they became more frequent, just in different places. A secluded park, the beach, a love hotel. While she was publicly dating Hongsik, they were secretly going on dates and sleeping together. It’s the best of both worlds for Yera, she can please her mom while also being happy with Chan, even if it requires many unhappy moments with Hongsik. Chan loves Yera but he hates that he can’t claim her publicly and is subject to the torture of seeing his lover with another guy. Once again he's being underappreciated and seen as not good enough. How long can this arrangement last before it self implodes?
