asteria is very much a memorable individual even among the other vibrant campers. she has a lot of energy and is very passionate about many things. her athletic side brings out her competitive nature and aggression. however with those she bonds with and is truly close, she has a caring and motherly streak. when you first meet her asteria can be a little intimidating however if she does not know you, or you have spoken nothing but nice things to her, she will respond rather kindly and in a friendly tone. she has grown a soft spot for the younger campers relating to their lost expressions and emotions, especially if they arrive at an older age than most, and is always delighted to explain a whole article worth of information about her plants if you ask about them. she is can be very focused and driven, especially in terms of training and staying active, though she does have a mischevious aspect about herself that drives most of the head counselors nuts. she does not like being told what to do, unless she respects and admires the person, so even if she complies asteria might make a face behind their back or grumble unhappily. she is a free spirit and has been raised to be independant so she doesn't like to be tied down or be given orders. her heart really is kind and gentle it just is layered with a fierce temper and some laced aggression. being transparent to others about who she is is very easy yet being vulnerable and honest is very difficult for her. she doesn't trust a great deal of people but when she does asteria seals her loyalty to them and stands by their side, almost obnoxiously.

her temper is an ill-fated trait about her and sometimes even she hates it. she doesn't know where she got it from, though her father says her grandmother had a bit of a quick temper streak when he was growing up, but it has always been there since she started going to school and playing sports. she tried to control it at times but was only more enflamed as she got older. going to camp and having friends like donghai has been the only successful outcome of providing ways for releasing her anger in a healthy and learning calm techniques. she also found planting and watering her plants helps soothe her quick fury. she is learning to keep her emotions at bay, since they tend to fly out and intimidate others, however she is also thankful for her driven passion and fury as it steels her training and only makes her work harder. asteria can only also be very perceptive. contrary to popular belief, her father did a lot of studying of his customers who walked in and heard their stories so it was a habit that asteria usually followed. it is the only time she is quiet really, when she is studying someone. well that and when she needs time to cool off and be by herself.

BACKGROUND asteria's upbringing was relatively tame in comparison to other demigods. demeter met asteria's father, a head cook at a resturant at the dock he still works at, at a food festival in olympia for organic fruits and veggies. haejin, asteria's dad, was looking for fresh organic food to bring home as groceries and the two fell into an easy conversation about how important healthy fruits and veggies were while buying tomatoes. it didn't take long for the pair to fall in love and demeter to be pregnant with his child. asteria's grandparents had passed when haejin was a child so their family was relatively small. when she was born, demeter left, not before explaining to haejin everything through a letter and to give grace to their daughter as well as protect her from the monsters that try to smell her out. at first haejin did not believe her and thought she was just screwing with him after dumping him with their kid. however once asteria started crawling and made the plants in the house grow in size whenever she sneezed or got fussy, he began to realize demeter was telling the truth and took her advice very seriously.

growing up asteria was able to stay at the same school consecutively even when she barely passed her classes. she only had a few encounters with small unknown beasts and monsters and she has always come out unscathed and unharmed. in fact she was not even claimed at thirteen years old, making haejin wonder if maybe just maybe she would be able to just get by in the mortal world and avoid most monsters. however when she turned fourteen that all changed. her father celebrated her birthday with one of his delicious cakes and took her on a boating ride down the east and west bay. they ended up sleeping in the cabin below and docking the boat on the coast of the sandy beaches of sunrise beach. the next morning, however, asteria awoke to find her father missing only to hear yells of terror on deck. turns out some sea monsters had found their way up the boast and had her father coiled in their grasp. though she encountered monsters before, it felt like a hallucination, not in broad daylight like this. asteria was first shocked but naturally her greek demigod instincts kicked in and she did what she was born to do: she fought. it was a piece of work but the sea monsters were killed and though injured her dad survived only to be forced to explain to her who she was as well as what just happened. 

that is why asteria was taken to washington, dc (the other washington haha) lead by a satyr that was an recently employeed under her father in order to keep watch and was forced to leave her dad at home. since phones could tigger demigods as bigger targets, asteria wrote letters to him over the summer and sometimes he would send her some of his favorite recipes to make. asteria is a summer camper, only so she could spend most of the time with her father back home and stay in school. however sometimes she convinces donghai to spend winter or spring break at her place in washington state though he is from the east coast.

 

TRIVIA

 people may be surprised by this but asteria is allergic to pollen. it is not deathly but it is definitely vibrant particularly with the changing seasons
 asteria speaks little korean. her grandparents did emigrate here from south korea but her father was born here and while he is fluent he didn't really teach her many words growing up. she can understand it a little better, because her dad will talk to her in korean sometimes, but it still is on a beginner level. she wants to start learning it though
 asteria did not know why she was named asteria for the longest time. many of the kids would make fun of her unique greek name by calling her '-tear-ia' when she attended elementary school and instead of crying she would just fight them. however when she learned of being a demigod her father sat her down and explained the story behind her name, who was an incredible amazon warrior and the titan mother of hecate. she was slain in battle after sacrificing herself for the amazons and demeter suggested the name to haejin in hopes of her future daughter would a great and selfless warrior. since then asteria has had little complaints of her name and hopes to be the young hero her mother would always be proud of
 sometimes she will sneak out to new york city or washington dc when she's at camp because she and her father don't travel a lot so she has never seen those big cities until she went to camp half-blood. it drives zoe nuts and if she finds out she always scolds asteria when she gets back unscathed
 being a child of demeter asteria does not get picked on a bunch of quests because many of the counselors don't find her skills useful. however donghai has vouched for her whenever he is selected to go on one so the quests she has been on he has been picked as well. however asteria secretly wishes she could just convince them on her own but so far it hasn't really worked
 asteria has yet to meet her mother but she would give anything to have a conversation with the woman who has been gone for most of her life. and to maybe show her all her plant babies - she knows demeter would like them <3

CHILD OF demeter summer camper

GENERAL IMPRESSION asteria has been coming to camp since she was fourteen years old so in terms of arrival, she has not been here as long as other campers may have. it took her awhile to get used to everything in terms of grasping what was going on and whether she was dreaming but she excelled in terms of training and socializing otherwise. at first she was kinda bummed to be a daughter of demeter when she was claimed since in terms of powers and strength demeter's is always underlyed or on a lower level as far as many people are concerned. however as she read more about her and her troubling history, as well as took care of her little plants on the window next to her bed, she began to feel more proud of her lineage and defended her mother against harmless insults and anything out of ashton king or lukas simmon's mouth. in terms of how she feels about the gods in general asteria doesn't really like them (dislikes some more than others) but she never really vocalizes her opinion about them unless she is upset and with close friends. even then she has learned to be careful after cursing out ares and having nightmares about being torn limb to limb for a solid week.

 

SKILLS asteria, like other children of demeter, has the power of chlorokinesis where she can do a multitude of things with plants. make them grow, mentally and physically summon them, teleport using plants, you name it. it seems like a lame ability but it just takes a whisp of the hand to have poison ivy waving through your enemy's legs... she also has the common characteristics of a demigod like superhuman strength, speed, adhd from being ingrained to fight monsters, dislexia, ability to read and speak greek.  

 

though demeter is not a fighting based goddess, asteria has her own weapons that she has used since the moment she realized how good she was at archery. she has a bow and arrow that looks like just like ones the apollo kids carry but she has carved little plant designs all over the wood of the bow to show that it is hers. it also happens to shrink down to a silver ring she wears on her left index finger with a carved daffodil. it was a gift from demeter she got before her first quest that she treasures. she also has a celestial bronze dagger, usually just strapped around her right leg.

RELATIONSHIPS

haejin park. age 47. father and one of the best cooks in the country (according to asteria)
asteria has a relatively close relationship with her father. he taught her how to cook growing up and always looked out for her even when she was acting ungrateful or causing trouble at school. though she did not do well in school and had adhd like many other demigods, he was always patient with her and very gentle at heart. a lot of their personal free time spent together was boating on the bay after he got off work and she finished class. he knew who she was the moment she was a little toddler and accidentally made the plants by the kitchen window grow in length by a couple of feet. they may tend to argue a lot but the way asteria and her father resolve an argument is very baker/cook style: they make food and present it to the other with a note and a big bow. in short asteria's dad is one of closest friends and in a matter of life/death she would hesitate sacrificing her life for him. 

 
zoe june. age 19. head counselor of demeter and half-sister
zoe and asteria have definitely had their bumps in the road before they have gotten close or even remotely became friends. aesteria's persona, and who she is as a person, very much rivals the nurturing nature of demeter's children. aesteria did not like zoe's strict rules and zoe found the younger girl a bit too competitive and a bit of a troublemaker. it took time but when zoe defended her against lukas simmons, the person she despised the most and was giving her a harder time, asteria realized she meant well not just as a head counselor but also as a sister. while the two are very different and still clash heads, nowadays they have created more of a unity against other cabins when needed and even formulated a friendship of sorts. 

 
iroha yamazaki. age 19. daughter of hades and almost a friend

iroha is definitely a hard to approach, heavy presence individual but that what makes her so fascinating to asteria. asteria always thought hades was an interesting man and considering his connection to demeter by 'marrying' her daughter persephone asteria could technically be related to iroha which she jokes to her sometimes. although iroha response is not always quick, or even vocal at all, asteria feels calm around her so sometimes when she needs to deflate and stay away from people to cool herself down asteria will sit or follow iroha. iroha is probably so used to this that sometimes when she has more energy than usual, she will respond back in conversation though it is very short and abrupt. asteria believes there is more to her than what meets the eye and that she is a mystery that the younger girl desires to unravel.

 
lukas simmons. age 19. head counselor of ares and her mortal enemy
because asteria enjoyed sports, and was pretty good at them, she would play with some of more competitive demigods like ares and apollo's kids. it was how she met some of her closer friends from those respective cabins as well. unfortunately it was also where she met lukas simmons, the hateful head counselor of ares and quite a bully. he would bother her so much because he knew he could get under her skin and no matter how many times donghai reminded her to ignore him there have been a few cases where she has wrestled him to the ground, or at least attempted to. unfortunately lukas simmons is always stronger and has always won. the two severely dislike each other and there is always bad blood when they cross, especially in terms of training of games. you would have to bring out the worst monsters from the deepest pits of tartarus or see camp half-blood blazing in fire and threatened to be ruined in order for them to work together at all.

 
diana. age unknown but looks 17 in human years. a dryad and her best friend
asteria is known for hanging out with some of the nymphs and asking them questions about plants, appreciating the tree protectors and their love of nature. diana was born to protect and raise one of the many oak trees in camp half-blood. it is unknown for how long she has been alive, she can't even remember herself as dryads are practically immortal if their tree is unharmed. however diana is very vibrant and lively, with the soul of a timeless teenager. she is very bright and cheerful though a tad michevious so she does not mind pulling pranks on the campers if they mess with her. diana met asteria within the first week of her arrival and as she was fond of donghai, an intellectual who knew and advocated for nature, she grew very close with the younger girl rather quickly especially after learning she was a child of demeter. diana gifted asteria her very first plant to take care of, that still lives today, and often helps take care of them. the two tell each other everything and besides donghai, diana is one of the few people asteria can trust. she always gets sad when asteria leaves at the end of summer and tackles her with a hug everytime she comes back.

COMMENTS thought it would be fun to break the nurturing stereotype and mellow personalities demeter's children may carry at camp half-blood. hope you like asteria !! i think she is definitely a memorable character full of crackheaded moments just waiting to be written haha <3
