영진솔 IS PART OF YOUNG NATION

young jinsol

immvkbz.jpg
birth name young jinsol (영진솔)
nicknames
big baby, crybaby, etc. used by his siblings. jinsol may have matured over the years, but his siblings remember how much he cried and wanted attention as a kid. is it a bit mean-spirited? sure, but jinsol's gotten so used to hearing any and all iterations of this nickname that he'll just respond with an nonchalant "stop it," or "i'm not a crybaby~" and laugh it off.
jinsollie, jin, sol nicknames derived from his name, used by friends and siblings alike.
date of birth 1995.03.20 (25)
occupation university graduate, part-time employee at young seoul

profanity jinsol has a self-imposed rule not to curse in front of his siblings, because he's convinced insoo and joowon would be disappointed if they ever heard him swear. over time, all of this evolved into his siblings deciding he is "legally not allowed to say ','" because he's a sweet cinnamon roll. the reality, though, is that jinsol swears with friends. not every other word, mind you, but it isn't rare.

languages spoken
korean fluent, his native language. as a born seoullite, he speaks the seoul dialect, and uses slang as the average 20-something would. he's not 100% with the times, though, seeing as he doesn't frequent social media or keep up with trends without help from someone internet-savvy like third. he also tends to speak formally, except with those he's very close to.
english conversational. it was the foreign language he learned from fourth grade until he finished high school, and the class he focused on most when he attended hagwon. he isn't fluent, and has no plans to be, but he knows niche technical terms for his field, and because a couple of his professors in university were foreigners, he could talk to them if the language barrier ever becomes an issue. good enough for him.

faceclaim hwang minhyun (nu'est)
backup fc kang seungyoon (winner)
height 181cm
weight 70kg
appearance in contrast to his personality, jinsol comes across as a cold city man. with a sharp jawline, broad shoulders, and a physique he's maintained since his military service ended, he's the sort of guy who could turn a head or two on the street, though this isn't something he's aware of. the only other difference between jinsol and his faceclaim is that jinsol's hair has never been dyed.
style simple but stylish, despite not seeming to care about fashion much (it's because he gets pointers from third). mostly wears pastel and neutral colors. his summerwear is more casual than usual, consisting of above-the-knee shorts, a t-shirt, and a cardigan if it's cool enough. usually wears a sun hat when he's outside gardening.
open-minded, empathetic, patient
sensitive, idealisitic, pacifist
weak-willed, indecisive, self-deprecating

a warm and gentle soul, wrapped up in an easily flustered air. together, these traits give him a sort of awkward charm that some people seem drawn to. he's always willing to help someone in need, no matter how much it may inconvenience him. he wasn't always so eager to help, or at least wasn't very capable of it until he grew older. now, though, it comes naturally to him. it's become something he enjoys doing.

timidity, too, is something he grew out of, for the most part. now he can initiate conversations, ask for a favor, make friends. he doesn't like to do these things, nor to leave his comfort zone (if he had the choice, he'd stay home all day and not talk to anyone), but at least he can. this has resulted in him being not too loud and outgoing, nor too reserved, though he does skew a bit to the quiet side. that is, unless someone gets him to talk about plants, which isn't so hard to do. in general, though, he's just a bit subdued, observing the world around him—which can be nice if you're looking for a calm presence.

but he hasn't grown out of all his childhood habits. he still tends to do whatever his family and friends tell him to—especially insoo and joowon, whose word, to him, is law. maybe it's because he trusts their opinions above anyone else's, but it's more likely that he wants them to be happy, to not trouble them further, to repent for how needy he was as a child. in that same vein, he always follows rules to a t, feeling it's the only way to go about things.

he isn't prone to bursting into tears at any moment like he was as a child, but he is still sensitive, especially to criticism. academia and things like peer reviewing were difficult on him because of it. at times, he can even be a bit manipulative, but not on purpose: it isn't often that jinsol does something and gets on insoo's nerves anymore, but when he does, and subsequently gets a stern talking to, the genuine guilt jinsol feels for giving his older brother grief again appears on his face, and in his voice. often times, when that happens, insoo can't help but feel guilty as well and do whatever jinsol wants, forgive him, or what have you, if only to get the pitiful look off jinsol's face.

background born the year young seoul was established, jinsol barely remembers the family's first seoul apartment, let alone nasan. his childhood was normal, or at least as normal as it could be when your parents are always working and your older siblings are left to raise you. he cried a lot, and required attention just as much, if not more, than the other kids. and, to add insult to injury he'd whine until someone paid attention to him. thankfully, he grew out of it. eventually.

his love for plants started early. during break at school, much of his time was spent running around, picking up flowers, fallen leaves, and pinecones, trying to sneak them back home and study them further. when he was about 10, joowon took notice of jinsol's niche interest and bought him a plant to take care of. he can't remember what kind of plant it was, only that it was not for a budding botanist. he only had it for a month at most, but it piqued his already overflowing interest in plants, and inspired him to buy more, including his old spider plant. this was also about the time when he started to mellow out as well.

after graduating from high school, he went on to study horticultural science and biotechnology (i'm calling this hsb from now on. takes less time to type lol) at seoul national university. he finished up his first year before signing up to complete his military service. it was a major deviation from what he was accustomed to but he ended up liking the structure. then, he was back in school again. he wasn't the biggest fan of hsb, from its inherently technical and science-oriented curriculum to not being able to interact with plants until he started upper division courses. which was... kind of the whole point of studying the subject. at least for him.

outside of academics, jinsol was well-known within his department. it was, initially, because of his aesthetic (a "cool college boyfriend," apparently), but later evolved into his aesthetic and willingness to help other students with pretty much anything. this made him popular with peers, new students, and seniors alike and there were times where he was hounded with requests for help, which he patiently fulfilled.

lastly, he graduated from snu at the end of the fall 2019 semester.

lifestyle currently, jinsol is at a crossroads: he could work toward his master's and take up a job as a graduate assistant like his advisor suggested before he graduated, but he isn't sure he could handle any more school, no matter how much he loves plants. or, he could go into the workforce, but claims to fear not being able to find a job relevant to his degree (though horticulture is becoming more and more important, and he knows it). but maybe he just wants to work at a flower shop, y'know? it's not like he's ever been wanting for money anyway; he has the financial support to do whatever he wants. ultimately, he just doesn't want to grow up and have the responsibilities of a full-blown adult.

so, for now, he's working at young seoul part-time (after lamenting to insoo about not having a direction in life). his main job is to tend to the herb garden, but he'll also fill in for the waitstaff if no one else is available. he goes to the gym at least twice a week, something he picked up after his military service ended. on other days, he goes for a jog in the morning.

he appreciates the convenience of city life, but at the same time, jinsol has always yearned for a life in the country. he's big into the idea of an idyllic, pastoral lifestyle, so he's genuinely excited to go to nasan for the summer, even before insoo brings up the idea.
infp-t, hufflepuff, pisces dominant.
young insoo
영인수, 39,
brother.
jinsol's beloved older brother. given their of fourteen years, though, their relationship can, more often than not, look more like that of a father and his son who admires him. insoo has done so much for jinsol and the rest of their siblings, and jinsol appreciates him immensely. ever since jinsol became aware of what a handful he was growing up, he's felt a profound need to make up for his faults, which to him meant not giving insoo any more trouble, and doing everything he asks without question. but, seeing as jinsol is an adult now, insoo tries to encourage his younger brother to think for himself. unfortunately, jinsol thinks every word out if insoo's mouth is golden, so his response, in general, is to say "sure, but what do you think? you know best hyung~"
young second
영주원, 33,
brother.
whether it's because of their similar personalites, the fact that joowon was the one who fed his curiosity about plants, or the fact that joowon has always been just a bit more protective of him, joowon is one of the siblings jinsol feels closest to. he's the one jinsol is most likely consult when he needs advice, as well as the one who talks to jinsol when something's bothering him but he doesn't want to be a burden. they're also the family mediators, though joowon seems to have a lot more success resolving sibling conflicts than jinsol. perhaps it's because joowon is willing to wait and see whether the conflict will end on its own, whereas jinsol just wants to end it as soon as he sees it.

in seoul, they frequently go to the gym together, while in nasan, joowon helps jinsol out in the garden.

young hyein
영혜인, 22,
sister.
compared to his other siblings, jinsol is quite distant from hyein, despite being one of the siblings closest to his age. for a long time, he's seen it as his job to pacify hyein whenever she gets fired up, but it rarely works. more often than not, the situation ends with jinsol getting dragged into arguments right along with her, or being snapped at by hyein instead.

still, he's always trying to help her, because he loves her just as much as his other siblings. in turn, hyein helps him out in the garden, which he really appreciates. like insoo, hyein is determined to get jinsol to grow a spine rather than just doing whatever insoo and joowon tell him to do, but jinsol, in his own way, is quite stubborn, and would rather just listen to what others have to say than be reactive like she is.

(i know she's supposed to be blonde, but this pic fits the aesthetic™)

lee yongjoon
이용준, 25,
best friend.
as one of the first people he met after he enlisted, jinsol was quick latch onto yongjoon. growing up with so many siblings, jinsol had never truly felt lonely or left wanting for attention—being such an attention-seeker as a child didn't count in his mind—and finding a companion so soon lifted his spirits. in no time at all, yongjoon became jinsol's closest friend and confidant outside of his family. after they were discharged, yongjoon went back to his hometown for a year, but has since moved to seoul, where he works as a store manager. so now, just like old times, they spend plenty of time together (when yongjoon isn't too busy with work, of course), along with sangeun.

personality-wise, there's a certain harmony between them. yongjoon coaxes jinsol out of his shell when he's being particularly meek and passive, while jinsol talks yongjoon down from getting too fired up over the little things.

yongjoon promised to take care of jinsol's plants while he's gone, and wants to visit the fam at some point as well! (with sangeun ofc)
ryu sangeun
김상은, 24,
close friend.
though sangeun and jinsol haven't known each other for long, with the amount of time yongjoon spent talking about his girlfriend back home, it certainly felt like jinsol knew her by the time they met in person.

their personalities aren't similar, exactly, but rather two different interpretations of what it means to be a kind and generous person. sangeun's is more of a hidden kindness, in that while she can be a bit set in her ways, she ultimately wants to be helpful and kind to others. so, as well as being her friend, jinsol really admires her resolve.

seeing as she and yongjoon got married just before jinsol left for the summer, the couple won't be in nasan right away, but jinsol looks forward to seeing them as soon as possible.
who would you prefer to room with?
"anyone's fine... maybe joowon-hyung or seventh would work best for me, though. but... i don't have a preference, honestly."

how do you feel about spending your summer in nasan?
"um... i was thinking about moving to nasan at some point, actually... but spending time there before i decide is probably a good idea, right? so, i think this is a good opportunity for me. for all of us, really." in a flash, his expression tightens, gravely serious. "honestly, though, i'm worried about my plants. i trust yongjoon, but there's a lot to be done—" [a detailed account of jinsol's daily plant care routine, cut to save time]

what would be your role at the restaurant?
"i think can i take care of the garden, like i do back at young seoul... or i could help with ingredient prep, maybe? i'm not very good at cooking, but i can at least gather ingredients for the day." he pauses, hesitating. "um, unless you have something in mind already... then i'll just do that. you know best, hyung."

why is insoo-hyung your favorite sibling?
jinsol hums, thinking. "because you raised me, hyung, and taught me to be a good person." he says after some time. "and you've had to put up with me for years and never held it against me, so..."
likes
lavender his favorite scent, color, flower and flavor! and he finds it relaxing.
tea both cold and hot. again, it's something that relaxes him. he also makes it a habit to drink tea at least once a day.
his siblings jinsol may not mind being on his own (or in the company of his plants), but he also loves spending time with his siblings. when he isn't at the gym, or working, he's doing whatever they're doing, regardless of how close they may be (if they'll have them, that is). he's the sort of person where, if you need someone to hang out with, he's probably available, and willing to drop whatever he's doing if he isn't.
games whether they be board or video games, you name it, he's probably playing it right now, or has in the past. and they're a fun way to talk to people without it being awkward.
rainy weather not only because rain is a benefit for most plants, he also likes the sound. ya boy likes chillin, what can i say
dislikes
conflict growing up in a home with so many siblings, one would think jinsol would be used to fighting by now. but he's always been sensitive, and a pacifist, so he doesn't want to take sides. he just wants everyone to get along.
making decisions in a constant state of worry about whether he's made the right choice, jinsol would prefer to not do anything at all. why not just have someone else do it for him?
sour foods he hates the inflamed, raw feeling in his mouth after eating a lot of something sour. he also seems to be a bit more sensitive to sour foods in general.
black coffee jinsol doesn't drink coffee often, but when he does, it has to be full of cream and sugar, so when he has to have coffee, it's in the form of a mocha, banana milk coffee, or vietnamese iced coffee. he just hates the bitter, acidic taste. in contrast, when he drinks tea, he never adds anything.
hobbies
gardening plants are jinsol's passion, and he feels relaxed when he's around them. he's happy to have a job where he gets to tend to plants for a few hours a day. also collects houseplants like nobody's business.
gaming when it comes to video games, he gravitates toward single-player, open-world games like breath of the wild, and dragon age, but he'll pick up a co-op or multiplayer game if his siblings want him to play with them. and when it comes to board games, he isn't picky.
reading jinsol enjoys magical realism and high fantasy in particular.
other
01 a walking plant dictionary. wanna know about a plant? just ask him, and he'll probably know at least one fun (or not so fun) fact about it.
02 would have been a momma's boy for sure if his parents were ever around, but since they weren't... he's insoo and joowon's boy.
03 oblivious to flirting, and doesn't know how to flirt himself. the type to flirt on accident.
04 his first spider plant died about five years ago, but he has several cuttings from the original plant that have grown into their own plants. so... kind of like it never died.
05 doesn't like picking favorites when it comes to his plants, but he talks about his korean pine bonsai a lot. he's been working on it since he graduated from high school, and while it's nowhere near where he wants it to be, he's still really proud :')
06 yongjoon and sangeun aren't his only friends, but they are the only people he hangs out with in-person on a regular basis. he mostly keeps up with his other friends through kakao.
07 exclusively a social drinker, with an average tolerance. he's a teary, sentimental drunk.
08 relatively organized, but still has notes from his uni days scattered around his living space. combined with all of his plants, it's not unlike a jungle.
09 likes animals almost as much as he likes plants, and for a similar reason: he doesn't have to talk to them if he doesn't want to. he's the type to leave sugar water for bees, or give table scaps to a stray animal.
10 also just kinds lets bees buzz around and land on him, because they're harmless and cute and fuzzy.
11 enjoys sticking to some semblance of a routine, so whereas back home he would wake up early to start watering all of his plants, then go out for a jog or head to the gym, in nasan, he wakes up early to start tending to the garden, and makes the rounds to wake the other siblings up so they can get things started at the shop on-time.
12 his love languages are acts of service and physical touch. a major hugger.
13 not the type to be overprotective or get into a fight for his loved ones. instead, he'll shower them with affection the next time he sees them.
14 being one of the younger siblings age-wise, while still being close to the older ones, jinsol sometimes serves as a go-between. he also acts more like tries to act as family mediator.
15 loves sweets, from traditional ones like dalgona, yakgwa, and rice cakes to tarts and jellies.
16 his favorite dish on the young nasan menu is samgyetang.
17 has a virtually non-existent social media presence. he only uses it to keep up with third's yt channel and brand, and any other siblings who are active online.
18 now that yongjoon and sangeun are married, jinsol is really happy for them!! but now he feels like he should be getting married soon, for some reason, or at the very least seeing somebody (which is only heightened when he sees hyemi again). this makes no sense to anyone but him.

name jeon hyemi (전혜미)
nicknames
ice queen, miss devil used by students, current and former. hyemi is a no-nonsense teacher, and often expects her (often first-year) students to have the same level of understanding and discipline as a grad student. really, though, she just doesn't like when students are distracted—class time is for learning, not socializing. she also has a strict no technology policy, which she'll enforce unless consulted beforehand. some students think it's unreasonable.
teach, senior various titles jinsol uses to address her, even though he isn't in school anymore. hyemi doesn't bother to correct him.
mimi, cheonhye general nicknames, the former being derived from the last syllable of her given name, and the latter a pun based on her last name and the first syllable of her given name, meaning "nature's bounty." both are used by close friends (she has a few, surprisingly), just for fun.
date of birth 1991.05.14 (28/29)
occupation ph.d student (enviornmental plant physiology) and lecturer at snu
profanity ocassionally. she sometimes uses profanity to spice up her language, but most of the time, she swears because she's angry.

faceclaim im jinah / nana
backup fc lee sungkyung

personality gifted with a particularly intense resting face, most of the time, it's hard to read what exactly is going on in hyemi's head. her mind is often elsewhere, thinking about whatever's coming next (these days, it's almost always about her research), missing the conversation in the moment. this has, infamously, lead her to not laughing at obvious jokes and come across as a bit of a buzzkill. really, though, she's just a quiet, private person who needs time to open up. and she's actually got an infectious laugh.

background hyemi's home life was never terribly warm. though she and her parents (both working in stem) were never close, she was expected to go the science route in the future. she took a year-long break after university, which she spent working to afford graduate school. she also worked as a teaching assistant as a graduate student, and continued working part-time as a lecturer when she started working on her doctorate.

now, she's in the research phase of her dissertation. she plans on writing a chapter about a species of natural hybrid orchid (kind of like cypripedium japonicum, but, again, a hybrid) growing in the region around nasan, its possible uses, and its relationship to other flora in the area. nasan was the most centerally-located, so she chose it as her base of operations for research.

(i'd imagine, since nasan is so small, she's just, like, staying at somebody's house instead of a hotel. i can expand on this if you want me to!)

initial meeting when jinsol was a second year in university, hyemi was one of his pomology professor's teaching assistants. he remembers her being intense, but didn't share the opinion of his classmates that she was the spawn of satan. having her as a teaching assistant actually made jinsol want to do better in class, but he wasn't sure why. his classmates used to and say he must have a crush on her. which he did, obviously, but like... have you seen her? can you blame him?

they didn't see each other as often after the semester ended, and when they did, they would exchange greetings and part ways. to hyemi, jinsol became a distant thought, a student who, for once, didn't annoy the hell out of her,

love story hyemi learns about the meaning of family by spending time with the youngs. she and jinsol eventually become something like friends, and he drops the formal titles. jinsol still yearns, and it's annoying because he's so not subtle about his feelings, but at least he's more aware of them, and respects that hyemi doesn't feel the same way.

interactions
- basically, jinsol has a huge crush on her, and everyone realizes it but him, hyemi included. he thinks it's just bc he admires her accomplishments (and that may be part of it, but only a fraction).
- his siblings notice that jinsol is more animated when he talks to hyemi. also he blushes, and trips over himself, and his words...
- hyemi becomes a regular at young nasan because she thinks it's one of the better restaurants in town.
- sometimes quietly tend to the young nasan garden together
- hyemi lets jinsol help with her research a little bit (mostly because she's worried about something being compromised. jinsol was a good student, and did well in lab, as she recalls, but it seems like he's a little more accident prone when she's around). at the end of the day, she gives him a pat on the head, and jinsol just... melts, because physical contact
- at this point they're at the kind of friends stage, and headpats just kind of become their thing.
- hyemi becomes closer to the other young sibs as well. she's not an additional young sibling or anything, but she enjoys spending time with the family nonetheless.
comments (i always have a lot to say, sorry orz)

i'm dumb and forgot how numbers work, so i meant to say i was thinking about applying for fourth or fifth, not fourth or sixth!! anyway as you can see i picked fifth

concerns kind of worried abt jinsol's personality,,,  i got half-way through and realized most of his archetypes and whatnot are the same as mine... so hopefully he isn't, like, too implausible. just bc i can't be objective about my own personality, y'know?

second, i couldn't figure out the hsb undergrad and which classes students are supposed to take from the snu website, so i based things like the class jinsol took when he met hyemi and whatnot on what my biochem major friend has experienced...

also generally just... eh about this app?? i haven't written one in over a year and i think it shows haha

suggestions
01 jinsol making friends with a stray cat or dog that hang around the shop
02 the sibs take a day off from work and go to the beach (aka obligatory beach ep)
03 jinsol, hyemi, and a few of the sibs going on a hike
04 jinsol and hyein bonding over... something. anything.
