STYLE it depends on where he is. on the road, he's all about baseball caps, oversized t-shirts, and jeans. maybe a coat if the temperature dips enough. fashionable in the most casual way possible.

on the ranch, he's rarely seen without the tattered straw hat he's had for who knows how long. he doesn't try to be anything but comfortable and able to work without restrictions. so, it's not uncommon to see him in a breathable shirt, with overalls and rubber boots, pitchfork in hand, caked in mud and dirt.

BACKGROUND the second oldest of four, and the only son, joonseok grew up on a gigantic ranch outside of lovedale town.

- spent a significant amount of time in town when he had school and stuff tho

- did lots of farmboy things and took care of pokémon

THAT NIGHT joonseok had just arrived in the morning for the world pokémon breeder association (wpba) conference at hankala resort. in the past, only joonseok's parents would attend, but as a member of the wpba, he was sort of obligated to go as well.

the wpba conference is a yearly opportunity for pokémon breeders and anyone interested in pokémon science (which i'm gonna call pokésci from now on) to attend panels and speak with experts to learn about different breeding projects, the latest technology, and so much more, from around the world. the conference is held in a different city and region every year.

TRIVIA

01 his parents breed a few species of starter pokémon, which are either distributed from the ranch directly, or given to professor kim to then give to new trainers. these starters are reknowned for their composed temperment. joonseok's official starter, cyndaquil, is one of these pokémon, as well as his wartortle.
02 joonseok's gracidea league challenge team consisted of: typhlosion, lucario, clefable, elektross, kingdra, and bisharp. aside from lucario and bisharp, all of them are resting at his family's ranch.
03 wanted to be a steel- or fighting-type trainer when he was younger.
04 not sure which region he wants to move to yet, but has a lot of interest in alola because of its unique ecosystem.
05 doesn't like keeping his pokémon in pokéballs, so when he's at home or traveling, all of them are out walking beside him. when in the city, though, he'll limit it to one or two pokémon at a time, usually lucario.
06 not a "pokémon whisperer" or anything, but because of his intuitive and academic knowledge of pokémon behavior, among other things, joonseok is pretty good at figuring out if a pokémon is in need of something.

ABOUT: JOONSEOK

JOURNEY three years as a trainer, four years in school, two years as a licensed pokémon breeder; nine years total.

TRAINER HISTORY

- began his journey on his fifteenth birthday, along with his friends ??? and ???, and was excited as all heck to get started

- the three of them went to unova for a brief vacation before they started their journey through gracidea

- earned all eight gracidea league badges, then challenged the elite four and promptly had his handed to him

- it was sobering. he'd lost a battle before, but it was never such a crushing defeat

- decided that must mean he isn't meant to be a trainer, despite all the time and effort he had put into the past three years, and went back to lovedale town. became withdrawn, mulling over battle stategies to figure out what went wrong (nothing did, there's just a difficulty spike between the league and the elite four)

- moped around at home after the Incident, until his sister soojeong ~~forced~~ encouraged him to apply for school, just to do something

ACADEMIC HISTORY

- decided to take the same path as his parents and major in pokésci

- didnt expect to get in his first try, since he hadnt been in school for a bit, but it turns unis love a good redemption story

- n e ways he got in and learned a lot about pkmn biology, health, and nutrition, the ethics of breeding pkmn, and conservation

- comparatively a lot easier than being a trainer for him, bc a lot of what he was learning in class he knew from growing up on a ranch

- graduated ~2 years ago

- wants to go back to being a trainer again, but at the same time still lacks confidence in his abilities

- battles sometimes, but doesn't do it much as of late bc his current team isn't meant for battling.

- like lucario, bisharp, and wartortle are eager to get out there, but blissey has -579485% interest in battling, and talonflame is more interested in caring for eggs now.

POKÉMON BREEDER LIFE

- operates out of his parents ranch, and does comissions to earn money. basically, people tell him what they're looking for, and he'll either find one already on the ranch, ask other pokémon breeders if they have the requested pokémon, or breed the pokémon himself (given it's even possible, and, most importantly, ethical)

- if he were an npc in-game, he'd be the daycare couple basically

- has sort of become a rep for his family's ranch bc he's a fresh face and charming 2 boot (i call it: having jr as an fc)

LUCARIO

THE AURA POKÉMON

it's said no one can remain invisible to lucario, since it can detect the species of a living being and its emotions. well-trained lucario can sense auras from over half a mile away. but sometimes, when reading auras, it finds out things it would rather not know, so it gets stressed out easily.

STEADFAST: when the pokémon flinches, its speed is increased by one stage.

HISTORY lucario is the first pokémon joonseok befriended outside of his family's ranch. he couldn't have been older than 10 at the time, exploring the ruins near lovedale town with his friends, when he met riolu. it seemed to have sensed something about joonseok, because it followed him home. joonseok's parents were peeved that he went to the ruins without supervision, but they couldn't just kick riolu to the curb. so, they let joonseok keep it, so long as he took care of it. and so he did.

NATURE timid (speed up, attack down)

- v sensitive to others' emotions

- has always been more of a shy pokémon, somewhat unsure of itself.

TRIVIA

01 it, along with joonseok's bisharp and gallade (in his party and back on the ranch respectively) have frequent sparring matches. initially, joonseok was worried the three of them didn't get along, but it seems to only be a friendly competition. said competition has also helped with lucario's confidence.

BISHARP

THE SWORD BLADE POKÉMON

this pitiless pokémon commands a large group of pawniard to hound prey into immobility. the pawniard allow bisharp to have the killing blow. but, no matter how strong the bisharp, if the blade on its head is chipped, or it loses when challenged to a battle, bisharp will retire from its position as the boss.

DEFIANT: when the pokémon's stats are lowered, its attack goes up by two stages.

HISTORY as a wee little pawniard, it was kicked out of its pack for being too weak, and wandered the area for days, alone, when joonseok came across it in unova. now, he didn't have much interest in raising a pawniard, nor a bisharp, given how difficult they are to train, but he pitied the poor thing, perhaps even saw a bit of himself in this pawniard separated from its "family"—but pawniard was not so easily defeated. though it was too weak for its pack, pawniard was a powerful little bugger, knocking out almost every member of joonseok's team before he captured it. not exactly a great start to becoming the trainer of a pawniard.

joonseok had to work hard to gain pawniard's respect.

WARTORTLE

THE TURTLE POKÉMON

using its fluffy ears and tail to maintain balance, it swiftly swims through water. some say a wartortle can live up to 10,000 years, and because of this, wartortle tails are a symbol of longevity, and the species has become a popular companion for older people.

TORRENT: if the pokémon's hp is below one-third its maximum, and it uses a water-type move, that move's power is increased by fifty percent.

HISTORY wartortle began its life on the shim family ranch as a starter squirtle, and one of the first joonseok helped his parents take care of. or, at least, helped as much as a small child can; he was only five years old. joonseok quickly bonded with wartortle (then squirtle), and hated the thought of letting it go. outright refused. in fact, he threw a tantrum when his parents told him they were sending squirtle off. maybe not the best parenting strategy, but they gave it a month: if this squirtle was still on the ranch, unclaimed by a trainer, in a month's time, he could keep it as his own.

01 some people think joonseok's smile looks like a wartortle's. joonseok doesn't see it, but he doesn't take any offense to someone mentioning it.
02 because of wartortle's rarity, joonseok has been approached by other people trying to buy it from him. he has yet to be given an offer that exceeds the sentimental value wartortle has to him.

THE HAPPINESS POKÉMON

it senses sadness with its fluffy coat of fur. when it does, this pokémon will rush over, no matter how far the person or pokémon may be, to share with them an egg of happiness. a compassionate pokémon as well, if it sees someone who is sick, it will nurse the sufferer back to health.

HEALER: at the end of each turn, the pokémon has a 30% chance of curing an adjacent ally's status condition.

HISTORY joonseok can't remember a time when he didn't know blissey. it's been in his life since he was a kid, helping his parents and their employees care for other pokémon on the ranch. it was never his pokémon per se, but they have worked together in the past.

TRIVIA

01 joonseok has only used blissey in battle twice, as it has never been trained for battling. on both occasions, blissey's sole purpose was to stall while joonseok though about his next course of action. blissey does not like battling, and has made that known to joonseok.
02 blissey comes from a line of happiny, chansey, and blissey bred specifically to work with pokémon breeders. they differ a bit from their pokémon center counterparts in that they are physically stronger, which helps them perform manual labor on pokémon breeder farms.

TALONFLAME

THE SCORCHING POKÉMON

it dives at its prey, reaching speeds of up to 310mph, then finishes its prey with a colossal kick. its tough wings resist flames, so a long time ago, firefighters used talonflame feathers in their outfits.

FLAME BODY: when the pokémon is hit by a move that makes contact, there is a 30% chance the attacking pokémon will become burned.

HISTORY before meeting joonseok and his family, talonflame was captured by an elderly woman from the city when it was a fletchling. it had always been a wild pokémon at heart, and shortly after evolving into fletchinder had an unfortunate accident that injured its wing. the elderly woman brought it in for treatment, but was unsure what to do with it once it was fully healed, because she didn't think she could sufficiently take care of fletchinder anymore. luckily, joonseok's older sister was the one who treated the pokémon, agreed to take it in. not long after, soojeong gave fletchinder to joonseok, because it seemed to suit him as a trainer.

MURKROW

THE DARKNESS POKÉMON

it has a fondness for shiny things, and will even steal from people and other pokémon to get them. to avoid chase, murkrow leads its pursuers down a dark, dangerous path, so it was once seen as an ill omen and generally disliked.

PRANKSTER: when this pokémon is in battle, status moves have a higher priority.

HISTORY the product of years selectively breeding swablu for a specific nature and special egg moves... sort of. the line this murkrow comes from is an offshoot of the initial project, designed to be hard-hitting attackers who can quickly heal themselves. however, no one seems to have thought about the consequences of young pokémon with such powerful moves.

NATURE rash (defense up, sp. defense down)

- loves dry foods, hates bitter foods. also seems to like sweets, but that might just be because its a young pokémon.

- is just,,,, , a smol babbey,,, so it doesn't have much of a personality yet

- quickly becomes a lil lord because it's a newborn pokémon that knows the most powerful flying-type attack discovered thus far.

01 talonflame has taken the role of its new parent.
02 perhaps because of its altaria father, murkrow has some swablu-like habits, namely a penchant for sitting on people's heads. the only difference is, murkrow doesn't land softly—whether this is because it doesn't know how, or just doesn't feel like being careful, is unknown.
03 enjoys being perched on people's heads almost as much as it loves divebombing them.
