bewitched's plant dad. a nickname given by regular customers. jinhyuk is often seen tending to the plants in the cafe if he's not busy working or helping others out. majority of the greenery in bewitched is due to his doing, with permission from yongmi of course.

step i. place an unlimited amount of friendliness, eyesmiles, and a cheerful attitude. although a little does goes a long way, there's no harm in pouring too much.

A BRIEF HISTORY.

year 1993. ryu wonsik and ryu eunmi came from a long lineage of witches. wonsik came from a family of kitchen witches, while eunmi was from a family of green witches. the couple met when they were both pursuing their dreams and hopes of becoming witchcraft teachers. together, they would teach and aspire the future and younger generations to embrace their powers; hone their skills and inspire them to use their abilities for the greater good.

year 1998. after they graduated university and obtained their dreams, wonsik and eunmi tied the knot at the age of twenty three, a year after they became teachers. back then, it seemed like life couldn't be any better.

year 1999. two years passes by and everything was perfect; they reached their dreams of being teachers, they love each other and their jobs, and even better, eunmi was two months pregnant.

it was all too good to be true.

year 2000. their beautiful days living on cloud nine immediately came crashing down. witchcraft is now banned. the shocking announcement left the two shattered, confused, but most of all worried. new rules and regulations were established, jail times introduced, everything was overwhelming and a complete blur.

fearing for the worst, wonsik and eunmi decided to stop using magic entirely after they had registered themselves. it was for the sake of their future family after all.

seven months after they decided to move on from their past lives as witches, eunmi gave birth to fraternal twins, jinhyuk and jinhee, with the male being older by three minutes.

JINHYUK'S STORY.

jinhyuk and his sibling were blessed enough to be born into a loving middle-class family and upon face value, the ryu family were just like everyone else, ordinary.

but the twins had always been aware of their lineage, at first he naively accepted that they couldn't tell anyone because it was a secret between the four of them. however, as he heard more stories from his mom and ocassionally their dad, who they had to force to share by showering him in affection, jinhyuk wanted to proudly tell the world that he came from a family of witches.

"you can't tell anyone, hyukie."

"but mom, why not?"

"you'll understand when you're older. both of you will."

jinhyuk and jinhee grew up being home schooled for a majority of their education. after their mom gave birth, their parents had decided that it would be better if they were to live rather lowkey and going under radar as it would be safer for them, especially if their kids end up inheriting their witch traits. this led to their mom staying at home, whilst their dad juggled between being a part-time teacher at a nearby high school, and studying to be a university professor for a certain period of time until eventually transitioning to being a lecturer and then later on a professor.

being home schooled meant the twins were protected from the potential scrutiny they would receive if others figured out that their parents were witches, and it didn't cause them to worry or fear for their lives. although, it also meant that they were not aware about the scrunity witches faced.

their parents eventually explained the truth to them when they were twelve. while his sister took it as is, jinhyuk felt angry; he didn't understand why witches had to be ashamed for being who they are, he wondered about all the other witches who've probably suffered a lot more than his parents, and he thought of kids like him who could have been the next generation of witches yet are told to hide their special abilities.

by the time they finished middle school, jinhyuk and jinhee had persuaded their parents to let them be in a real school for their final three years of schooling. there were a lot of hesistance on their parents end but after months and months of persuasion through various means, such as jinhyuk placing a sticky note on the fridge every morning with a reason why they should be enrolled in the nearby high school, all the way to jinhee holding a presentation in the living room while standing on their coffee table.

thus, the twins were enrolled to the nearest high school where they pretended to have no knowledge about witches and witch hunters, playing along with classmates who had dreams about becoming a witch hunter. overall, they blended right in and had managed to graduate without anyone noticing that they were in fact witches.

BEWITCHED.

after passing the college entrance exam, jinhyuk was accepted at busan national university where he decided to undertake a bachelor's degree in secondary education.

it was during his first year as a uni student when his sister had dragged him and their mother to hike the mountains near their house. jinhee wanted to visit this cafe that she came across on instagram and used it as an excuse to spend a day with them.

since none of them had expectations, neither of them expected their mom would encounter a long time friend, lee yongmi who they found out was the owner of the cafe. the two ladies, along with their father, used to work as teachers at the same school before the ban was placed.

yet unlike his parents, lee yongmi continued to pursue teaching witchcraft in secrecy. after their first visit, jinhyuk would visit the cafe every chance he could get for the next two weeks.

after careful consideration and getting encouraged by his twin, jinhyuk told his parents about his desire to join bewitched, to learn more about witchcraft and to also work. both his parents were hesitant to allow him, his mother seemed rather open to the idea but his father was adamant about forbidding him to go.

yet somehow, he managed to persuade them and the moment he received their approval, jinhyuk immediately ran to the cafe like an excited puppy and begged yongmi to hire him.

back to present day, jinhyuk is currently in his second year of university. he still dreams of being a teacher, now specifically a witchcraft teacher, but knowing that the nation's under a ban, jinhyuk has no qualms with striving to be a high school teacher.

as long as he keeps his hopes up, that ban will finally be lifted one day and then he can be a witchcraft teacher who'll fawn over animals and plants with his students. although jinhyuk has no clue when that'll happen, there's no harm in hoping right?

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JINHYUK.

jinhyuk still resides with his parents alongside his sister at the apartment they grew up in. studying three days in university, he cycles to the station and boards the train. apart from one day where he only has one class, jinhyuk's remaining two days are crammed with his schedule classes.

regardless, as long as he's free, jinhyuk heads to bewitched an hour after he finishes his classes to help out with the cafe. on days where he's free from university, jinhyuk spends majority of his days in bewitched as his family lives on the outskirts of the neighbourhood, thus being fairly close to the mountains.

jinhyuk's life is generally caught up with balancing between his work at bewitched and work at university; there are times when he often focuses on one more than the other, and so to prevent himself from putting all his energy into one, jinhyuk pours all of his energy into doing both. he studies every single day, for one day he would focus on honing his skills as a witch and then the next day, he would give all his attention to university work.

he also tries his hardest to make time for family and friends, he likes to drag his twin out on adventures and have lunch with his close friends. but whenever jinhyuk has free time for himself, or when he can make time, he spends it by taking his dog to roam around the forests. there, jinhyuk spends his time relaxing by talking to everything that's around him, basking in the love that nature gives him.

JINHYUK!THINGS

🌻likes. flowers, plants, animals, winter season, little kids and babies, coffee & tea, making people happy, discovering new music, photography, art galleries, amusement parks, salty food, befriended new people.

🌻dislikes. violence, cruelty on animals or plants, accidentally hurting people, being criticised, witch hunters, being betrayed, see others hurt/cry, feeling or appearing weak, getting hit with a "k." over text, deadlines, assignments.

🌻hobbies. video games, roam the forests, read books, learn new spells or create potions, bothering his sister, photography, buying plants and flowers.

🌻habits. bites his bottom lip when nervous, stumbles over his words and his ears go red whenever he gets flustered, claps while laughing, makes weird noises, sings in the shower, does little dances when he's really happy or excited.

🌻subtly talks to animals and gets away with it because it's not that surprising apparently. plus, even if it seems suspicious he just pulls the "it's a habit because i talk to my dog" excuse.

🌻studies really hard about animals and plants. he leans more towards plants and flowers since he loves to learn about them; their uses, benefits, what they mean or symbolise. he reads a lot of books on plants and animals.

🌻his favourite flowers are sunflowers since it symbolises faith, loyalty and adoration. he also finds the ancient greek myth that provides the reason why sunflowers turn towards the sun really interesting.

🌻impulsively gives flowers to his mom and sister that have special meanings. one time, he gave his mom pink carnations which symbolised a mother's love while he gave his twin sister a mint plant. (ft. "what does mint mean?" "suspicion.")

🌻has a mirrorless camera which his parents got for him when he graduated high school and takes it everywhere he goes.

🌻his backpack is a camera bag, he earned money to buy one and he uses it for everything.

🌻in his bag: his camera, (if he has uni) notebook and laptop, an umbrella, lipbalm, wallet, airpods, a book, a pencil case, his phone, house keys, a portable charger and a water bottle.

🌻when he encounters friends or acquaintances at bewitched, he either naruto runs outta there or pull an invisible spell. it all depends on whichever's faster and it's generally the nyooming because he panics and his brain goes into 404 error.

🌻really wants to be a cool teacher one day, the type that kids bond with and can respect but also treat like a friend; he wants to help kids and inspire them to reach for their dreams. but if he wasn't set on being a teacher, he would have been a vet.

🌻has a long-haired chihuahua named haru which his family raised when he was fifteen.

🌻always apologises before he eats and says thank you after every meal because he's friends with animals and plants, it'd be rude of him to just blatantly ignore the fact that they had a life. also, what if they've talked before??? ö

🌻his dad used to be very busy when they were little but he still made time for them; as jinhyuk grew up, he began to really appreciate his dad's hardwork to provide for them

🌻since the witch ban, his dad has been against the idea of his family dabbling with magic. he worries a lot and doesn't want to face negative consequences that'll cause problems for them

🌻his wife convinced him to let jinhyuk join bewitched
🌻he was lowkey salty about it but he was willing to let it slide, until jinhee joined her brother later on so now he's super salty

🌻jinhyuk and jinhee have a mission to make his heart open up to magic again because they know that he loved it so much

🌻really, all wonsik wants is for his family to be safe and if it means that he has to push aside his desire to use magic again then so be it

🌻she's the voice of reason in the household and if not for her, the entire house would be in shambles

🌻usually supportive of her kids' decisions unless it's very risky or she can sense that it won't do them any good
🌻her patience runs long but once that fades eunmi becomes stubborn and reluctant to change her mind

🌻persuaded her husband to let jinhyuk work for bewitched by bringing up yongmi and their times as witchcraft teachers

🌻they believe that communication is key and so they all try to spend time together or talk as a family

🌻sometimes end up in arguments but they all strive to solve it collectively and talk through it

ACT 1. SCENE I.

jinhyuk has a fairly good memory, he's good at distinguishing a new and a regular customer. the girl that stood in front of him was certainly a new face, and just like any customer, he serves her with his brightest smile, excitedly greeting her.

"hi miss! welcome to bewitched, what can i get for you?"

the girl simply stared at him and despite repeating his question a couple of times, she seemed lost in her thoughts. he's served multiple customers who tend to do the same and he never put much thought into it, but she seemed so frozen that he began to wonder if his coworkers placed a spell on her.

"miss, are you okay?? what can i get for you?"

"what?"

"what can i get for you?"

"you."

"what..." flustered at her response, his ears began to flush pink and he tried not to stammer whilst serving her that day.

ACT 1. SCENE II.

as she began to frequently visit bewitched, jinhyuk eventually got to know her. yeseul became a familiar face and after lots of small talks, and with yoorim's help, he began to befriend her.

choi yeseul, what a pretty name. so pretty, yet so infamous in their community—she's from a family of vicious witch hunters and everyone was aware of who she was. as they watched the two's blooming friendship, everyone (especially yongmi) began to worry.

at a certain point in their friendship, yeseul asks him a question that he would have never imagined hearing. "how much does it cost for you to date me?"

while jinhyuk was somewhat flattered, it upset him that yeseul expected him to place a value. although dating was something he never fully considered, he wouldn't date a person based on money and ultimately rejected her offer.

yet the next day, after careful consideration, jinhyuk turns the tables around and asks her out on a date. he didn't want to hurt her feelings by coldly refusing and besides, he wanted to know her a lot more.

ACT 2. Scene I.

one friendly date eventually led to multiple dates—or hangouts as they considered it. the time they spent together helped them to know each other, getting along too well due to their similar personalities and bonding over their mutual love for animals, flowers and the mere fact that they're both dog parents.

over time, they begin to influence and assist each other to be better versions of themselves. while yeseul's the main person who helps him to be more confident in himself, jinhyuk does his best to keep her feet on the ground; helping her realise that not everything can be solved with money and being materialistic won't led to the finer things in life.

jinhyuk is grateful to have yeseul in his life. he appreciates her a lot and everything she does. whenever she cheers him on or sends him post-it notes with little messages, jinhyuk can't help but smile like an idiot as he thinks of her for the rest of the day. as a way to show how much he cares for her and appreciates her, jinhyuk likes to give her flowers with a small note on what it symbolises and why she reminds him of that flower, however the most frequent flowers he gives are sunflowers and peonies simply because they're her favourites.

ACT 2. Scene II.

as feelings begin to mix in with their friendship, everyone was becoming more worried as what they feared the worst slowly began to start. everyone around jinhyuk told him to stay away from yeseul since the very beginning. a relationship, regardless of what kind, between a witch and a witch hunter was risky not just for him, but everyone else around him.

no one knew what their actual status was, not even them, but if there was one thing that was sure, it's the fact that this was all wrong.

jinhyuk's twin eventually supported them after getting to know yeseul, but his parents weren't happy. they've allowed him to join bewitched much to their dismay, but having their son with a witch hunter crossed too many boundaries. they didn't care if it was a friendship, or a romantic relationship, they wanted him to be away from her and the trouble she could bring.

everyone, especially his parents, would always try to doubt her and her intentions, and as always jinhyuk would always defend her. he has a lot of faith in her, knowing deep down that yeseul isn't like her family. although their words do cause him to have second guesses every now and then, he instantly shoots it with his optimism, trusting her with his whole heart.

"no, sunflower isn't like that! i'm sure of it!"

"sunflower? jinhyuk, are you dating that witch hunter?"

"n-no. i mean i wouldn't mind— no, no we're just friends!"

"you better stay away from her, this isn't a joke."

ACT 2. Scene III.

yeseul always appreciates whenever jinhyuk helps her with her assignments and thesis. when she asks for his opinion, jinhyuk tries his best to subtly provide information and he finds it some-what amusing how yeseul never really wonders how he knows all of this knowledge.

when yeseul finally reveals to him the sole reason why she's following her family's footsteps, and that if she ever did meet a witch she would do no harm, jinhyuk decided to take the risk. he trusted her after all and he believed her.

thus, jinhyuk reveals his secret to her by reviving a dead flower and growing flowers around her. jinhyuk expected the worst of the worst situations that could happen when he decided to tell her, yet was met with yeseul's heartwrenching smile, thrilled to know that he trusted her enough to share his hidden ability.

he raises his pinky up, asking her to swear secrecy and with a sealed pinky promise, jinhyuk tells her another secret.

"by the way, my name's not seojun...it's actually jinhyuk."

"ohmygod, what?! don't tell me you don't have a twin either—"

"oh no, i haven't been lying about that. jinhee's my twin."

"her name's jinhee?!"

ACT 2. Scene III.

to consider jinhyuk and yeseul as dating is incorrect. while their growing feelings are evident and awfully obvious to everyone else, it isn't necessarily clear for them.

despite the multiple dates—or shall we say "hangouts" and the amount of times he sends her flowers, or their constant posts of being together all the time on instagram, jinhyuk carelessly throws the word "friends" around like some rag doll. due to his lack of experience in regards to these matters, he has a very hard time coming to terms with his feelings.

it goes so far to the point where yeseul slowly began to believe that he truly did just see her as a friend and eventually, she no longer visited the cafe. jinhyuk began to look for her every day, he would always send her messages and when he hears news that yeseul was going on a date, it left him shattered.

jinhyuk was crushed that it affected him, his bright disposition and his work ethic both at bewitched and in general. he was a wiltering flower and jinhyuk didn't understand why he felt that way. (alternative title: jinhyuk sulking in forests because he has no clue what to do, and asking for the animals/plants' advice)

being sick and tired of her brother being mopey, jinhee finally decided to drill it into his brain that he liked her, helping him to realise and accept his feelings. eventually, jinhyuk and yeseul convey their true feelings towards each other.

extra notes!

romeo and juliet except fluffier that it makes shakespear roll in his grave, mutual pinning + making bad decisions even a clown with no brain cell wouldn't make = chaos, angering everyone around them because yes they're cute but that's illegal, yoorim and jinhee are part of the #yejin support squad, super soff and fluffy bebis who are whipped for each other.

jinhyuk was fourteen when he first casted a spell, it was purely chance when the twins decided to visit the convenience store to buy snacks and on their way home, they spotted a dog near their street.

the twins gravitated to the dog as his sister instantly crouched down to pet it and ensued her baby talk. seeing how one-sided her "conversation" was with the dog, she casually remarked to him how cool it would be if the dog could reply.

jinhee's words sparked his imagination to go wild and he began to visualise himself holding a conversation with the dog in front of them. a clear and unfamiliar voice breaks his train of thought which freaked him out because there was no one around apart from them and the dog.

"jinhee did you hear that?"

"hear what?"

"hey over here!"

"that! didn't you hear a voice?"

"if you mean voice as in barking then yeah— are you good?"

"down here!"

jinhyuk finally looks down at the dog in jinhee's arms, its eyes boring into his as its tail wags happily, "i think i'm having a fever dream."

"why?"

"the dog's talking."

jinhyuk immmediately told his parents about it and it took him a few months to come to terms with his newfound abilities, fear taking over his heart. it wasn't until they began to raise a puppy that he began to slowly accept his powers as he wanted to be the best dog parent for their puppy.

since then, he grew to love his powers and wanted to expand his knowledge. jinhyuk would often steal books that contained spells which his parents had tucked away in the attic; he would then hide in his closet to read and once he finished one book, he'd sneak back to the attic to get another one.

REGISTRATION

jinhyuk is a registered witch, his parents decided that it'd be better if it was up to him to register when he got older, aware of scaring their fourteen year old if they forced him to do so.

the idea of having his every move being intensely monitored by the government and witch hunters still scares him now, but at the age of eighteen jinhyuk decided to register, worried about how it would affect his family if he didn't.

due to being registered, jinhyuk is always wary and cautious on getting caught. sometimes a bit too much as he freaks himself out and with his expressions often giving him away, it ends up appearing obvious that he's hiding something.

EMPLOYMENT

jinhyuk had always wanted to explore his powers yet restricted himself to reading up on spells and green witches. there were certain spells that he could practice in his bedroom once the blinds were shut and the curtains were closed, but he wanted to know more.

deciding to work for bewitched tore him apart. being registered, he feared what would happen to him, his family, and even the cafe if he was caught. one mistake could land all of yongmi's hard work in the drain, and it would be his fault. yet the thought of being able to work on his powers was an opportunity he just couldn't reject. bewitched was the only place he could quench his dying thirst for knowledge; to know more about witches, his powers and even himself.

with his twin's encouragement, jinhyuk decided to go for it and pushed aside all his fears. he talked to his parents and once he gained their approval, jinhyuk asked if he could be hired.

jinhyuk is nearing one year at bewitched. his main role is at the counter, excitedly greeting customers with a cheery disposition and a wide smile. jinhyuk tends to hold small conversations as well, often causing customers to forget what they were initially ordering. aside from customer service, jinhyuk does his best to help others out in cleaning, washing or picking ingredients.

he can also be seen taking care of the plants and flowers in the cafe. yongmi wasn't sure when she started allowing jinhyuk to bring in plants that he either brought or revived after wilting but one day, he just texted her asking for her permission and since then, it became a frequent thing. majority of the flowers on the cafe tables and the green plants scattered all over the vicinity are jinhyuk's doing, which luckily no one seems to mind and it's surprisingly appreciated by the customers.

jinhyuk's abilities are fairly average. he has a lot of knowledge on techniques and spells but because he was scared of being caught, or making mistakes that'll cause him to get caught, he didn't put his head knowledge into practice thus his range and control aren't necessarily the best. however, jinhyuk works day by day to hone his skills and perfect it.
