LOVE IN A NUTSHELL.
stands at 160cm and weighs no more than 48kg; long blonde hair that often changes in colour depending on her impulsiveness; oval face shape; dark brown eyes that sparkle when food is in sight; marshmallow squishy cheeks and a charming smile on her pinkish lips.

sarang isn't too fond of spending a long time trying to put on make up, thus results to simply applying bb cream, concealer and filling her eyebrows before walking to her bus stop whilst applying tinted lip balm.

the look of love.
rather simple and casual. sarang's a huge er for oversized hoodies, sweaters and cardigans. has a wide collection of rings and earrings which she likes to wear. the colour scheme in her closet are mainly neutrals and darks. most of the time she pairs her outfits with white sneakers or converse.

william & bentley, brothers, 3 & 2.
 — precious headaches —

ever since they entered into her life, sarang considers her little brothers as miraculous gifts. she always wanted sibling yet would be met with disappointment until years later.

cheeky, talkative and oh-so playful, william and bentley are just like any other kids their age. although they can be a bit of a handful sometimes, sarang loves the both of them to pieces. they're the sole reason why she's a patient person and though she isn't the type to show too much affection, sarang becomes soft for her siblings.

william is thoughtful and very in touch with his emotions. even at his young age, he has the ability to express himself very well. he's caring and full of love which he pours out on bentley, sarang and his parents. though his with his brother isn't much, william is very dependable and takes good care of bentley. he oftens causes mischief and can even get himself, as well as his brother, into slight trouble but nevertheless, william has a heart of pure gold.

bentley was once a quiet and always smiling baby, then he began to learn how to talk and since then, the jung's household has never been quiet with the two boys but it's always full of life. bentley is brave and curious, he's not afraid to try new things in order to beat his curiosity. he's an intelligent kid who has the ability to solve problems he faces in a blink of an eye. much like his older brother, bentley is also determined and persistent, especially when it comes to food. he's the biggest foodie and sarang has never seen a person who's so passionate for food quite like her little sibling.

with two cheeky brothers, sarang's energy has to never run out as they beg her to play with them, and of course having the biggest soft spot for them, she can never say no. in an attempt to be the best sister ever, she frequently spends time with them by "going on adventures" or just to eat, and she never fails to shower them in affection. really, it's not hard to figure out that the only ones that can melt her into a puddle of goo are william and bentley.

SHIN RYUJIN, CLOSE FRIEND, 19.
 — beautiful WIFE —

ryujin
and sarang first met during their first day in middle school. all of sarang's friends from elementary were at different schools so everyone was a new face, though it seemed to her that everyone knew each other.

everyone was talking amongst one another apart from sarang and the girl next to her. it didn't take long for sarang to reach out and from there, she found out that ryujin's family was new in daepo. since then, they've been good friends who entered into the same high school and later on, in the same university.

shin ryujin has a boyish charm to her, she's the kind that doesn't squirm at much nor the type to gush over lovey dovey things. but it doesn't mean, she isn't a romantic. contrary to her name, sarang is the one that refuses all sorts of ideas on love while ryujin is the one that shrugs, only to tell her that it can happen. honestly, ryujin is perfect — she's kind and affectionate, full of charms and really, what more can anyone ask for?

for ryujin, sarang is one of her best friends. she's the person she runs to when she has a problem, and the one she still goes to when she's happy because ryujin trusts her with all her heart. she's aware that sarang isn't the type to share her issues but when she does, ryujin is grateful to know that sarang trusts her as well and she'll always be more than willing to help sarang out.

being in the same university, ryujin, hyunjin and sarang frequently meet up. though she complains that she's sick and tired of seeing their faces, sarang enjoys their company. as a perfect trio, they do things together such as watching movies, shopping, eating and all the likes. when it comes to affection, it's no doubt that hyunjin is the winner, followed by ryujin and then sarang who isn't all about showing physical or verbal affection, though when she does express it, they appreciate it ten times more.

HWANG HYUNJIN, CLOSE FRIEND, 19.
 — THE AUSSIE BOO —

when ryujin and sarang entered high school, they were a duo yet by the end, it turned to a trio as hyunjin entered the scene. sarang has no exact recollection of how hyunjin slid himself into their friendship but he did any way and he has no plans of going away.

hwang hyunjin is a drama queen. he can be overly dramatic and a bit too extra at times, but at the end of the day, hyunjin is a good guy. if anything, sarang likens him to william due to how similar they are in the sense that he's good at expressing himself. much like her little brother, hyunjin has a heart of gold and as she likes to describe him "too soff to the point it's nasty."

but maybe, that's exactly why sarang found herself beginning to like him. hyunjin treats those around him with suffocating kindness — being an only child, he can't help but to shower those he cares about in so much love and affection. yet the more affection he gave to her, the more she began to dislike it because dammit, her heart was beginning to melt.

yet she had to stop herself before her heart could even melt any further because hyunjin is unattainable. his heart belongs to another person's and it always has been even if he's so unaware of it. hyunjin fails to realise how much he talks and mentions ryujin, nor does he realise how he constantly glances at her way and his lovestruck smile whenever they text.

and slowly, yet surely, sarang can tell that it won't lead to a one-sided tragedy. she sees it in the way ryujin would laugh at his antics, or the way she would playfully hit him.

really, it's no brainer. after all, sarang had always been quick-witted and observant. but sometimes, just sometimes, she wishes she wasn't.

yoon seonho, CLOSE FRIEND, 19.
mr. famous —

hyunjin had the knack of inserting himself in a friendship. being the biggest extrovert out of the trio, hyunjin easily made friends and it was through him that sarang got to know his fellow classmates, yoon seonho and his best friend lee minchan.

the two boys were warm and friendly that it wasn't hard to get close to them. however, the one thing that sarang didn't expect was being a part of their youtube channel. once hyunjin, sarang and ryujin befriended them, the trio became a close friend group of five. from there, they became included in seonho and minchan's youtube videos, filming funny and entertaining content. (see more in yoon seonho's app)

however, as time goes on, sarang begins to suspect something in the way seonho looks at ryujin. although it's rather seldom for the two of them to be left alone by themselves, sarang found the courage to ask, or rather point out her observances.

"it's ryujin, isn't it?"

the abrupt question caught seonho off guard at first, however he also had his own fair of observances to point out.

"yeah well, you like hyunjin."

and that's how they began to relate to each other even more. sarang welcomes seonho to talk to her whenever he needs advice or just to rant. being on the same boat, she understands how seonho feels—the hint of jealousy and sadness whenever hyunjin and ryujin are together.

it's a sad reality to accept that they're part of some messed up love lines where their sides are unrequited. but it's the reality they have to deal with.

and so when her best friends were officially together, sarang couldn't help but to feel the pain for seonho. they're different in a sense that sarang's feelings were rather shallow, but seonho fell too fast and too hard in love. thus, sarang does her best to help him out in the way that she can; telling off her best friends when they get too lovey dovey, or stopping them with their pda.

despite seonho's unaffected attitude, sarang knows that he's faking it. deep down, she wants to do more for him and like any good friend, sarang is there for seonho. though, she hopes that one day, regardless of when that'll be, someone enters his life and helps him to fall in love again.

title: observances on love
main subject: jung sarang

upon first glance, jung sarang seems quite intimidating. she walks down the corridors with a calm and unfazed expression, and her earphones probably blasting a good tune to block out the noise from everyone else.
then again, first glances are subjective. it takes more than just stares to figure out a person. despite her poker face screaming "i want to die" sarang is full of life, memes and too many heartwarming smiles.
being quite the optimist and a "go with the flow" type, she works hard in everything she does and strives to improve on herself. in her eyes, failure isn't a thing she should be afraid of, but rather where she can learn from. due to her role as the eldest in her family, sarang is fairly mature and reliable; she knows that she still has a long way to go in life yet regardless, her wisdom makes others wonder whether she really is just nineteen. her reply, you wonder? "idk man, am i nineteen or am i secretly ninety?" she would jokingly respond, "find out next time on the conspiracy channel."
having two younger brothers has led to her patience extending day by day as she does her best to take care of them. sarang never fails to bond with her siblings and set a good example to them. really, the moment anyone sees her with her younger brothers one can tell that sarang is the type to put others before herself and push her fears aside to protect those around her.
of course, one can also tell whenever they see her rolling her sleeves up (even if she doesn't have sleeves) and hear her iconic lines "what's wrong? who do we need to fight?" immediately after she notices the tiniest change in her friends' behaviour or in the atmosphere. sarang is watchful and awfully observant to the point where she quickly picks things up, joining two and two together before making a conclusion that's often pretty accurate.

however, sarang isn't just full of charms, she's also full of flaws. but as she views it, flaws are a good thing because it's what makes us human. though her perception of imperfection is wonderful, it doesn't mean that she doesn't hate herself for it.
although it's an unanimous fact that sarang is friendly and approachable, once past the intimidating first impression, only a certain few can really get to know her. keeping her distance, sarang doesn't share too much about herself, and it's hard for people to realise that she shares little about herself due to the way she handles conversations; she answers as vaguely as possible before throwing the question back and asking for an elaboration till a next topic ensues.
sarang's behaviour of being detached has led to her tendency of pushing away her feelings, choosing to numb her emotions and allowing it to dissipate into thin air, as oppose to opening up to others about it. for as long as she recalls, sarang has always been independent and it's a double edged sword. while it is good, she can end up too self-sufficient to the point where she would refuse to ask for help until she proves to herself that there is no other way to solve the issue alone. sarang refuses to rely and depend on other people as she feels that she should be the reliable one, let alone being a burden to others is what she hates the most.

it's even worse when stubbornness comes into play. when independence, detachment and adamance are all mixed in, it leads to sarang being self-destructive. she's head strong when she refuses to ask for help and there are times when her stubbornness leads to her getting hurt.

in all honesty, jung sarang is rather difficult to describe as she's too unpredictable. her words and her actions don't meet; she says one thing yet her actions say another. one minute, she says she hates people and the next, she's the one who cares too deeply. though she considers all possible solutions before making decisions, sarang can also just throw her objective mindset aside and recklessly throw herself in a situation. it's hard to understand nor does it make sense but according to sarang's words, "does any thing ever make sense?"

— kim seungmin.

tl;dr. a pretty big tsun, sometimes nineteen and sometimes ninety, says she isn't soff but she's soff, ultra reckless when it comes to herself, crap at expressing emotions, the type to sign her name up for things with no clue what she's going to be in for, a stronk and independent woman™

background
both university students studying business, samuel hemmings and jung mikyung met in sydney, australia where they fell in love. after a few years, at the age of twenty one, the two decided to tie the knot in seoul and in sydney. a year later, the young couple entered parenthood as they welcomed their first child, a baby girl who they named as elizabeth hemmings, or in her korean name jung sarang.

samuel and mikyung's desire to finish their masters' degree and accepting work in a high-end company led to sarang spending most of her childhood in sydney. for little sarang travelling to seoul meant vacation, yet when she was ten, her grandfather had called the family to tell them that he would be retiring soon and would like to give the ownership of their family's hotel business to her mother.

so the hemmings packed their bags, flew to korea and situated themselves in daepo near the family business. thus, sarang's family has fully settled there ever since.
for the longest time, sarang always dreamt of having a younger sibling, yet years had passed and her hopes faded away, leaving her to accept that she was going to be an only child.

or so she thought.

when sarang was sixteen, she came home from high school and was met with her father's embrace before he spun her in joy. "sarang, you're going to be a sister!" they told her and the hopes she had, which was once crushed, returned and came true.
nine months later, sarang became a sister to a baby brother whom they named william and not too long after that, her mother fell pregnant once again. the next year, the family welcomed another baby boy who they named bentley and despite the long wait, sarang's family was finally complete.

nyooming to present day, her family's hotel business has grown since her grandfather passed it down to her parents, and this has led to sarang's family living well-off; her parents providing them with everything that they could ever need.

after graduating high school, sarang was then accepted into yeongi university where she applied for a CRIMINAL JUSTICE degree in hopeS to become a CRIME ANALYST. her first plan was to become a criminal investigator but her her parents refused her dreams, so she bargained and LANDED WITH HER PLAN B.

WHILST JUGGLING SCHOOL WORK, SARANG disliked the idea of asking money from her parents thus APPLIED FOR A JOB AT A CAFÈ NEAR YEONGI UNI AND NOW WORKS THERE PART-TIME DURING the early mornings before her classes, free days from uni and on weekends.
lifestyle
sarang and her father are usually the firsts to wake up in the morning. getting up at five, sarang gets ready by taking a quick shower before packing her bag to start her day. she then helps her dad with making breakfast for the family and leaves before the food can be cooked.once sarang leaves the house, she heads to work where she's greeted by her boss and from there, she begins to set up the tables, prepares the coffee machines and places out the food. before the cafe is fully open, sarang manages to eat an apple and begins to serve customers till she finishes at ten in the morning.

after putting away her apron, sarang sets off to university to attend her classes. most of the time, she is focused in her lectures but her attention span is the equivalent to stale bread so it doesn't take much for her to be distracted. sarang writes notes which she hastily writes in class before she pulls an "aesthetic" by rewriting them in her best handwriting and pretty highlighters when she gets home.

when four pm hits, sarang finishes her last class and she immediately naruto runs out of the campus to pick up her brothers from their grandparents' house. she'd spend half an hour there to chat with her grandma and grandpa before leaving with the two boys. from there, they would have a little bonding time where sarang would take them out to do whatever. sometimes, she uses it as a way to run errands or to hang out with her friends while babysitting. really, anything goes with her.

by seven, the trio would return home to see their parents back and they would have dinner together. after washing the dishes and playing with her brothers for a little bit, sarang immediately heads to her room to rewrite her notes and study for an hour or two, unless she has assignments to work on or in exam week where she studies for two more hours. after that, if she has time or she's not so tired, sarang gives time for herself to relax before going to bed around midnight.

this entire thing then repeats every day she has uni. on the days sarang's off from uni, sometimes she works from early morning till noon but most of the time, she's free to do whatever she pleases. those are when she hangs out with her friends, bonds with her siblings or just go with wherever and whatever life takes her.
on weekends, sarang can sleep in till eight, before going to work from nine to five. the free time she has remaining ends up being used in what ever she feels like doing, which is stay at home most of the time.

don't you love love? (no.)

title: observances by love
main subject: kim seungmin

with a smile so bright and eyes that crinkle into crescent moons, kim seungmin is very warm and friendly at first impression.

for someone who appears so reserved and laid back, seungmin is an extrovert. then again, just because one is labelled as such doesn't mean they're instantly talkative or loud. right?

awfully similar to a puppy, possibly it's due to his demeanor or his appearance. maybe it's both. seungmin is loyal to his family and friends, being the type who would do anything and everything for them. he cares for those around him, feeling the need to be a reliable person. though the youngest in his family, seungmin is capable of taking good care of those precious to him.

however beware, beyond those brown orbs that appear so innocent and that irritating cute smile, there lies a sharp and honest tongue paired with an intelligent mind that spews out fire. one diss or one roast could leave anyone k.o-ed on the floor. one could simply be laying still and hear his sudden words, laced in playfulness with an obvious hint of pure evil, "even your breathing is annoying."
that alone can infuriate a person, and is it really wrong to throw a shoe at him even if the reason can be justified? he's annoying! though to be fair, he is funny at times...but that's besides the point, he's still annoying!

flaws are a wonderful thing, except when it's with seungmin. honestly, he's a whiny baby—come on, is he nineteen years old or is he nineteen months old? he constantly seeks for attention which one can clearly tell that he doesn't get, judging by the way he can be so irritating. he also never fails to grab every opportunity he can get to be a tease.

he's also rather rigid, seungmin needs to be more open to having options rather than sticking to the same routine over and over again. how else can one explore and have adventures, if they're always out doing the same old things? where's the fun in that?

but of course, seungmin is also too selfless for his own good. he would drop everything just to comfort a friend, and give up what he has to help out family. it's to the point where seungmin forgets about his own well -being, just so theirs are better than his. it seems that kim seungmin wears his heart on his sleeve and would be willing to give it to someone in need.

that doesn't change the fact that he's still annoying though.

— jung sarang.

tl;dr. lowkey a soff boy, actually evil — his face is an ultra scam™, very big brain, a big tease, 11/10 would hit with a shoe any time, too honest and too witty for his own good, just super annoying but also pretty caring. not going to tell him that though.

background
kim seungmin was born in daepo, korea in a wealthy family that owns a large law firm company. he is the youngest in his family and has an OF Six YEARS WITH HIS older sister.

ever since he was little, his parents had always been busy with their company thus was often left with his sister in the care of a nanny. for the longest time, he craved for their attention and whenever he received it, seungmin treasured it like gold.

the kim siblings considered their nanny as their second mom and the reason why they grew up to be kind, understanding and very generous was mainly due to the way their nanny treated and taught them.

instead of whining and pushing boundaries to receive the attention seungmin wanted, he grew to understand that his parents had their own pressures and bear. although he viewed his household as rather cold and often lacked affection, seungmin has never pushed aside the fact that his parents still cared for him and his sister even if they weren't physically there.

by the time seungmin had turned eleven, their parents became busier than ever and the likelihood of seeing them at home was often slim. this led to the kim siblings being even closer, taking care of each other as they had to become independent instead of relying constantly on their nanny.
it'd be a big lie to say that they didn't have little fights and arguments but they quickly made up, knowing that at the end of the day, it would lead them TO nowhere.

however, it wasn't long till his sister had to leave for university. his parents had always placed the pressure on their eldest to take over the law firm company one day. thus, to allow her little brother to do whatever he wished, seungmin's sister studied hard to take the college entry exam before getting accepted into seoul national university.
just like that, seungmin's sister had moved to seoul for her studies. since then, apart from the visits during holidays and her uni breaks, seungmin and his nanny were the only ones left in the household.

WHEN HE WAS SIXTEEN, HIS NANNY LEFT DUE TO HER DESIRE of RETURNing BACK TO HER FAMILY AFTER HER LONG SERVICE in the kim household. EVER SINCE THEN, SEUNGMIN HAS BEEN LIVING ALONE AND CAME TO ACCEPT THE LONELINESS IT OFTEN BOUGHT.

BACK TO PRESENT DAY, SEUNGMIN HAD FINALLY GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL AND WAS ACCEPTED IN YEONGI UNIVERSITY WHERE HE STUDIES CRIMINAL JUSTICE. HIS PARENTS HAD BECOME LESS BUSY OVER THE YEARS AND NOW OFTEN SEES THEM HOME, though there's still an awkwardness between them.
how they met
I. grocery hyung.
(setting: a sunny afternoon, a month before high school graduation, in a grocery mart.)
seungmin stands in front of the cold drink displays, his eyes scanning the multiple options in front of him. should he get iced coffee? chocolate milk? cider?his train of thought then gets broken as his ears pick up the sound of tiny foot steps and the mutters of little voices beside him.

"baby, what do you want?" seungmin hears the little boy say to his younger brother.

the younger brother lets out a little hum, his tiny finger in his mouth as he tries to think. "do you want juice?" the boy speaks up again, earning a yell of excitement from the latter.

"okay! i want banana milk."

seungmin, who's been watching, lets out a soft chuckle. it seems awfully familiar as he and his sister were once like that. he notices the older brother stare up with a focused expression at where the juice and banana milk were positioned, wondering how he would be able to get the drinks.

noticing seungmin's presence, the toddler smacks his older brother's arm. "hyung!" he shouts, before pointing at seungmin and then the drinks.

the older one then looks up at him, flashing a smile which seungmin reciprocates as he kneels down to their eye level, "hello." he greets the two, "what's your name?"

"william." the boy responds as he grabs his younger brother to show seungmin, "this is baby."

"and what's baby's name?"

"bentley."

Seungmin grins widely at the cuteness and he lifts his hand to pat their heads gently. "it's nice to meet you, william and bentley. do you need hyung's help to grab drinks?"

"yes, please."

proceeding to stand up, william goes closer to seungmin who begins to cautiously pick him up. from there, the little boy grabs his banana milk and the juice for his brother.

the moment seungmin places the boy back down, bentley waddles over to snatch his drink and stands besides william to utter his joyful "taeng kyu!" towards his way.

"thank you, hyung!"

just as seungmin's about to respond, the two boys hear a familiar voice that cause them to turn around. "there you are!"

sarang rushes over, hastily pushing their baby stroller. she stops right in front of the boys, kneeling down to pull them in an embrace. "now, what did noona say about walking off by yourselves?" she tells them.

seungmin watches as sarang cups william's face in her hands while she asks, nothing but worry on her face. william begins to jut out a small pout as he begins to feel guilty, "ben and i just wanted to buy something."

"aigoo, but you should have told me so we can do it together." sarang replies, "i was starting to get worried."

"sowwy," bentley enters the scene, his tiny hand reaching up to rub sarang's hair as a way of apologising.

"sorry, noona."

"that's ok, just don't do it again."

sarang places little kisses on her brothers and then looks up at seungmin. standing back up, she picks bentley up in one arm and holds onto william's hand with her free one. "thanks for helping them out," sarang begins, sending an apologetic smile at his way, "i hope they didn't cause you trouble."

"no, not at all. they're really cute." the boy responds warmly, patting william's head in the process, "you should be more careful next time, who knows what could happen."

the girl nods her head vigorously, sending another smile. "thanks again," she says as they begin to head off, "william and bentley say bye to hyung."

"bbai bbai hyung!" bentley waves happily.

"bye, grocery hyung! thank you!"

and from that small yet memorable moment with her little siblings, seungmin's path had begun to cross with sarang's.
ii. partners in crime.
(setting: yeongi university, lecture hall, first assignment issued.)

"jung sarang and kim seungmin."

sarang always hated partner work. don't get her wrong, luck always seems to be on her side as she ends up with fairly decent partners, but she would much rather work alone and do everything herself, as oppose to relying on someone else.

with her hand raised in the air, her gaze remains on her notebook as she uses her free hand to doodle. from the corner of her eye, sarang stops her little drawings once she notices a figure sit down beside.

"hey."

looking up, she is met with a familiar face smiling at her. sarang squints her eyes in an attempt to recall her memory, he seems quite familiar but she isn't too sure where.

"hi—" sarang replies in an abrupt manner before sending a sheepish grin, "i'm really sorry, but you seem kind of familiar to me. have we met before?"

seungmin nods his head, "we've met once. but only for a brief moment." he answers, recalling that time from the store, "it was at the grocery when your little brothers ran off without you knowing."

with the sole mention of her brothers, the  memory plays in her head as she lets out a sound of realisation, "oh yeah! you helped out my little brothers, i remember now."

"anyways, i'm kim seungmin and it's nice to meet you again." he says, extending his hand towards her.

sarang sends a warm smile as she gives a firm handshake, "and i'm jung sarang. it's also nice to meet you too, again."

"it's small world huh?"

"yeah. who knew that we'd end up in the same course and now, partners in crime.

seungmin raises an eyebrow at the latter's word choice, "partners in crime?"
"partners in crime." she slowly repeats his statement before she further elaborates, "i mean criminal justice is all about crime and we're both partners for this assignment."

"so we're partners in crime."

"exactly."

iii. my friend's bestfriend.
(setting: saturday at sarang's work place, two months after the due date of the paired assignment)

it didn't take long for seungmin and sarang to become friends; whilst working on their assignment, they often texted and took the time to meet outside university hours.

due to the numerous days and hours they spent together, it also didn't take long for seungmin to be comfortable to be playful and .

"i really regret that i called you my partner in crime. i should've switched with another person while i had the chance."

"that's on you, sarang. it's not my fault that you're short and you can't hit me whenever i say something mean."

"i'm this close to kicking your shins."

from there, seungmin and sarang began to see each other's colours and let's just say that, since they're way past the courteous stage, they're both chaotic.
fast forward to two months later, sarang is up late on a friday night as she chats with seungmin and she begins to wonder how they became so close. it used to be impersonal and shallow small talks that further progressed to longer, yet still trivial, conversations but somewhere along the way, it snowballed into deep and personal talks. [ jung sarang ] have you ever regretted liking a person? sent 1:10am

[ kim seungmin ] hm, i don't know? why? sent 1:10am

[ kim seungmin ] i mean, if you want to tell me why. don't feel pressured to, i know you aren't that comfortable sharing things. sent 1:10am
although the time they've spent as friends  hasn't been that long, seungmin's aware of sarang's discomfort when it came to telling people her personal issues. it was one of the first things they've talked about once they got closer.
and though sarang refuses to admit it out loud, seungmin was an exception because for some odd reason, she can find herself opening up to him at ease.

[ jung sarang ] ok, i'm gonna drop a thicc paragraph. i have a close friend — let's put him under the name hwang, and i've known him since high school. it's not serious yet but recently i've been seeing him sort of in a different light. which is weird because ye i'm starting to kinda like him but all at the same time,, i'd rather not. sent 1:12 am.

[ kim seungmin ] why not? sent 1:13 am.

[ jung sarang ] idk,, i wouldn't have a hard time being around him if i didn't have these icky feelings. besides, i think hwang and my other friend like each other so yeah, i'd rather not. sent 1:14am.

[ jung sarang ] it's okay, i don't need love life advice or anything. i know how to deal with it, i just felt like telling someone about it so it's off my chest. thanks seungmin, i'm off to bed — good night. sent 1:15am.

[ kim seungmin ] good night, sarang. i hope you sleep well — i know we haven't known each other that long but know that i'm here for you and you can tell me anything. sent 1:16am.
the next day, sarang heads off to work and she feels a bit better after telling seungmin her current situation about hyunjin. with a smile on her face, she pushes forward the notion that her day will be a good day.

yet as soon as hwang hyunjin walks in, her bright smile begins to fade as her eyes land on the familiar figure who stands right next to him.

sarang's faltering smile quickly forces itself back up, "sorry hyunjin, don't think drama queens are allowed in here." she jokingly greets her friend before turning to the one next to him.

"hey seungmin."

"hey."

hyunjin looks at the two with confusion too visible on his face. "you two know each other?" he asks, scratching his head.
"yeah, we're in the same class for criminal justice." seungmin replies, "what about you two?"

"oh, sarang and i have been friends since high school! she's pretty cool huh?" hyunjin explains, heading over to sarang's side to pat her head.

an annoyed grunt escapes sarang's lips as she lifts up her fist threaning to punch the boy, "whatever, loser. you befriended me so you can say you have a friend from australia."

as seungmin watches the little interaction between the two, he begins to put two and two together.

'so hyunjin's the one she's talking about.'
sarang steps away from hyunjin, fixing her hair in the process. "how do you two know each other?"

"seungmin's been my bestfriend since we  were three. you would have met him a little earlier but every time he was there, you would bail—even ryuj knows him."

"right." sarang nods her head lightly, "well i gotta head back to work."

"yeap, sure. we were only here to visit you on your break. see you, jung." hyunjin says with a wave.
"and it's nice to meet you again seungmin, for the third time." sarang mentions with a smile.

"likewise, sarang."

tl;dr. the three various times kim seungmin has been introduced in sarang's life

interactions
chaotic chats. seungmin and sarang, even if they're not physically together, still exude chaotic energy virtually. their chat logs are often full of memes or tiktoks they send to each other with a simple caption of "hey look it's you."

sometimes, it's meme wars, sometimes it's deep convos, and sometimes it's absolute nonsense. although every chat they have varies depending on their mood and on the time of day or night, every single one is something they cherish.

teasing comments and snarky remarks. the main trademark of the two's dynamic friendship. there isn't a day where sarang ends up saying something snarky because of seungmin's teasing.

some days it's about her gestures, other days it's about the way she says or reacts to a situation and on most days, it's about her height. sarang has gone past the point of caring because she does it to seungmin as well—at the end of the day, they both clown each other.
"sometimes i have this urge to smack your face and i have to hold myself back."

"well, it's a real shame that you can't
easily reach it then sarang."

"don't worry, seungmin. you've sunk low enough for me to reach."

subtle soffness. but beyond their overly playful demeanors, there is no doubt that seungmin and sarang places a great value on their friendship.
underneath his multiple teasings and smart remarks, and her very meaningless threats of violence as well as snappy comments, they would do anything for each other.

although sarang tries to cover it up, the girl deeply cares for seungmin. everyday, she's grateful to have a friend like him in her life and her appreciation for him overflows.

nevertheless, seungmin notices it.
he sees it in the little things she would do as a way of taking care of him. the way she would tiptoe to fix that one strand of hair that's outplace, or when she would share her umbrella with him on a rainy day. even if her words are jokingly cruel, her actions show so the exact opposite.
seungmin, on the other hand, isn't afraid to show sarang that he appreciates her a lot. he expresses it through words and actions; when she needs a listening ear, he's there for her and whenever she's upset, he does his best to cheer her up.

he's used his shoulder to be her makeshift pillow a couple of times before, but if she ever needs a shoulder to cry on, one can best bet that he'll be there too.

[ seungmean ] stop being a tsun. we all know you're secretly soff. just admit it. sent 1:30 pm.

[ tsunrang ] shut ur traP, u clown. i'm not soff or a tsun. sent 1:32pm.

[ seungmean ] sure, jan. only a soff tsun would say that. sent 1:32pm.

teach and learn. for seungmin and sarang, their friendship can be also likened to an exchange of expertise.

in general, sarang pushes seungmin out of his comfort zone—he survives off routines as it's all he's ever known since he was a young boy. in an attempt to ensure that he and his sister would be well-educated and grow up well, his parents entrusted their nanny with a schedule which covered every hour for every single day.

even after his nanny left, seungmin had to depend on routine and having sarang in his life, someone so carefree and accepting of whatever happens in life, has lead to some changes. "you need to have more flexibility in your life, seungmin." sarang constantly nags him with a sigh, "sure schedules are great and all but too many routines makes you boring."

and since she comes from a loving family, sarang also helps seungmin in regards with his family's awkward relationship. sarang suggests ways to make them bond and she encourages him to intiate things in order to alleviate the awkwardness in his home life
meanwhile, seungmin assists sarang out in terms of expressing her emotions. since he came to know of her feelings for hyunjin, the way sarang had "dealt with it" was to numb herself from her emotions and force herself into thinking not to like him. and the moment she told him about it, he found himself scolding her.

"that's really bad for you, sarang. it's not good to bottle all your emotions either."

"well it did the job didn't it? that's all that matters really."

"you're so reckless." he sighed.

sarang used to tell him how she envied her little brother william, who at a young age, can express himself. "when he's mad, he says that's mad. i wish i was like that too." thus began seungmin's project of helping her to express her emotions.

every single day they spend together leads to them learning something new from each other. which goes to show that, though at face value, their friendship may not seem much but deep down, meeting each other has been one of the best things that's ever happened in their lives.
"kim seungmin, you ."

"you say that now, but you truly appreciate me. it doesn't hurt to admit it."

"i appreciate you when you shut up smh."

love story
i. prologue.
(setting: the jung's house, a week since uni has started for sarang.)

"how's uni going for our little liz?" sarang's dad asks in english as they play with the two boys.

"do i still count as little?" she responds in english as a laugh escaping her lips, "it's alright so far. i think it's going to be fine,, hopefully."

"your height still makes it count," his dad jokingly says, laughing as he earns a little glare from her, "i'm kidding — you'll always be my little girl, you know that."

"you're no fun, dad honestly." sarang pouts while switching their conversation back in korean, "i'm telling mum."

"am i hearing my favourite daughter being a whiny? did your dad tease you again?" her mom enters the living room from the kitchen, sitting down beside her husband.

"no, i was just asking her about uni."

"no! he was teasing me!"

sarang's mother lets out a laugh, shaking her head in amusement. "don't mind your father, that's how he gets by. it'd be more shocking if he didn't joke around."

"anyways, i think rangie will enjoy her time in university." sarang's father states, "she comes from a family that knows how to be fun after all."

sarang shrugs her shoulders, laying down on the padded play mat next to her siblings who were playing together. "you think so?"

"this is a new chapter in your life, anything can happen liz." her mother adds, "when i was in uni, i met your father — who knows, you might meet the person you'll spend the rest of your life with there."

"boy, i hope not." her father butts in, "she's too young to be taken away from me."

"you took mum away from grandpa at the age of twenty one."

"well that's your mum, it's different now."

sarang sits up from her position to playfully roll her eyes at her father, "ok dad. i'm sure grandpa didn't feel that way too." her voice laced in sarcasm.

"yeah! of course, your grandpa didn't feel that way. i was a handsome fellow."

william and bentley begins to laugh out of nowhere upon hearing their dad, causing sarang and her mom to shriek in laughter.

"tsk, these boys laugh like they don't look like me."

sarang shakes her head before laying back down, "don't worry though dad." she says, "it won't happen any time soon — i have no interest in falling in love."

ii. drowning in self-denial.
(setting: at a picnic table in a park, idk the time frame tbh — probably somewhere in the middle of the story lmao)

crushes. it'd be a lie if sarang doesn't say that she hasn't had her fair share of those, because she has.

but every time she encounters those giddy feelings, sarang does the number one thing she does best. shoot them down and deny her feelings till they disappear.

sarang's done it multiple times to know that it's very effection and it was the exact thing she did when she came to the realisation that she was starting to like hyunjin.

she was aware that it was going to be a lot harder to shoot her feelings down because unlike the rest of her crushes, sarang was close to hyunjin. she couldn't just ignore him and stay away without making it super obvious.

yet kim seungmin came along and though he was very unaware of it, he helped her to get over growing feelings quicker.

since that incident (as she likes to call it), having spent more time with seungmin than hyunjin, sarang is 100% cured and she no longer feels anything for hyunjin apart from platonic brotherly love.

despite her name, jung sarang has never been too fond of love, more specifically the romantic type of love; the one that leaves a person breatheless, the kind that's overly soft and, according to her, rather cringe.

but deep down, she knows that there's a real reason behind it all.

taking risks are often a beautiful thing, but even though sarang can be reckless, there is one thing that she wouldn't try to take a risk in.

and that's love.

so what does sarang do? why of course, she denies herself the desire to fall in love — to experience those jittery butterflies that swarm in a person's stomach and the heart palpitations that no one can willingly stop.

sarang, hyunjin and ryujin occasionally end up in conversations where they daydream about the future that lies ahead of them, and once seungmin came in the picture, he too found himself in it.
just like the one they're both currently in.

"sarang, what about you?"

"hyunjin, why do you even ask? you know what her answer will be." ryujin speaks up, clearing to prepare imitating her dear friend, "nah mate, i'm flying solo and spending my entire life with two dogs."

sarang lets out a laugh before protesting, "i do not sound like that."

"no, you sound like that." the two perfectly say in sync, high-fiving each other after.

the girl would proceed to roll her eyes but really, they're not wrong. "but yeah, i don't think i would ever get married."

"why not?" seungmin asks.

sarang glances over to him, flashing him a smile as she simply shrugs her shoulder to answer his question.

ryujin and hyunjin shake their heads before complaining to seungmin. "don't worry, we get that all the time too." hyunjin mentions.
"love is a hassle, men are a hassle." ryujin adds, "though it is accurate, it's her words not mine." seungmin pushes aside his curiosity to let out a chortle, "wow. it's even harder when you're too independent and a tsun, huh?" he comments teasingly towards sarang.

"yes, thank you!" hyunjin yells, standing up from his seat to clap for his best friend, "i finally met a person who agrees with me."

ryujin stares at the two boys, "is she really that bad? i mean she's a tsun but she isn't a hardcore tsun."

"i am not a tsun!"

"yeah you are!"

"no!"

"yes!"

as sarang childishly bickers with ryujin and hyunjin, seungmin's gaze lands on her and he begins to wonder why he even cares if sarang doesn't want to get married.

after all, it's not like he likes her that way or anything. right?

yeah, of course not.

and as sarang briefly stops from her little banter, her eyes exactly meets seungmin's very own. just like that, her heart begins to faintly race.

sarang is sure that it's the caffeine talking because there's no way that she could be falling for kim seungmin. right?

yeah, of course not.

iii. epilogue.
it's totally up to you, my friend! you have the wheel. you can drive up to fluff city or down to angst town, i don't mind :^)

sarang made him a playlist first and seungmin called her out for it.

helloo~ your app is asdfghjkl amazing. the things i skimmed through were very entertaining to read!
anyways, i was wondering if you'd like to collab? :3
i was thinking my character and his best friend could be close friends with your trio. like you know how when there are two separate friend groups that are friends with each other? (it's confusing but i hope you get what i mean). and then also, for ryujin to be my character's l/i (that, sadly for him, he'll give up on bc hyunjin is his bro and he gets to know that he has feelings for her too)
