a born and raised korean-american, elaine moon eunkyeong is the second child of father liam rivers and mother moon ahyoung. growing up bickering with older brother daniel moon, she was the life of the house. the family house where her aunt (her mom's sister) and her maternal grandmother lives, it was a environment where there was always family around you. she flourished in the big family living conditions. it was also huge christian environment. growing up in the city of los angeles, eunkyeong was happy and positive even in the slight stigma of asians among her peers. she is asian and proud. her mother's family immigrated for a better life and she can't deny that it has been just that. she grew up not being envious of those who lived in south korea. she has learned to make friends with everyone and anyone, but also to use that eloquent mouth of hers to defend herself and others.
she attended downtown magnets high school, where she took on the magnet of “business”. her american dreams were rather vague, compared to her peers; she just wants to enroll in college and work according to her college studies. it was during a school theater project that she felt a connection towards the arts when she was part of the creative design division. she was gifted in sketching and sensitivity towards color. this was when she realized that she could really pursue something in the lines of business and arts. declaring her major in business and a minor in design, she pursued both her initial high school magnet and her area of passion. what made it more sweeter was that her parents agreed to pay for tuition.
LIFESTYLE:
graduating from the university of southern california on time, she decided to work in online fashion stores to try her hand in the industry. she applied for a full-time position in the design department at online fashion store “tobi” to gain some working experience on her resume. even if the working conditions are not on par with the comradeship she built with her co-workers, she’s looking forward to spend more than a year there to build experience. afterwards, she’s looking forward to the career she’s going to build, wherever she’ll be. word on the street is some of her college crew is thinking of opening an online thrift shop and they’d be glad to have someone design and manage the visuals of their social media and website.

KNOW I'VE NEVER REALLY BEEN THE SMARTEST
the two were both raised in the same neighbourhood in downtown los angeles. being one of the few korean families in the neighbourhood, the two families bonded faster than with any other family. though their homes were on the same street, they bonded with different types of people. joshua’s circle were more laidback and chilled whenever they had no homework while elaine’s circle were the kids who spent every friday night out and went to all the house parties on the block. the two always saw each other whenever their moms met each other, their moms always press the two to tag along and chat with each other on these occasions. they do talk, though a bit awkward, about all the random things in the world. when they were younger, they used to play a bunch of games before getting bored. they started to get more friendly entering high school. those joint meetings with mom didn’t sound so forced anymore. elaine spilled the hottest tea in school with joshua and somehow joshua’s geeky stories and random singing wasn’t so bad to bear for elaine. they became close friends who saw each other a lot in a day. they were in the same magnet in the high school and shared several classes together. when their times match, they eat lunch together and joshua insisted some days on taking the bus with her. it became natural for joshua to become a part of elaine’s circle and on some nights when joshua couldn’t say no, they went to some parties together. meanwhile, when all this is happening, their moms are smiling and sipping the tea to seeing their kids go along with each other.
YEAH I'VE MADE MY MISTAKES, MY MISTAKES
You could say that eunkyeong was the first girl joshua ever fell for. Yes, she was his first love. from the first time she appeared in front of him, she’s only been surprising him and exciting him to do things out of his comfort zone. he liked being around her; there was a sense of guidance and leadership in her that made it impossible for him to get lost. he liked how she forced him to make a decision, but is cool with either of his choices. there was a difference in his feelings. at first, it was all comradeship and having to do deal with the awkwardness, but grew into a genuine friendship. from that friendship, she kept pulling him into her world and he became amazed with everything she does, the little things she says. it grew from that amusement and respect for her attitude to genuine oh--i-am-falling feelings. the big giveaway was one he almost got mad at her because she didn’t even ask if he was going to homecoming with a date and ended up asking another guy (which she ended up kissing that night). eunkyeong thought he already planned to go with his friends. surely, if she was just a friend, he wouldn’t have ticked so close to anger but that was what happened and he couldn’t believe he was just realizing it. then again, he was only sixteen back then.
he has never said it to anyone else because he thinks it might sound crazy to anyone who knows him and her. well, that’s what he thinks. he’s always heard of what other people thought of him and eunkyeong. some say he is one of her mates, others say that they’ll definitely date eventually. he didn’t want to listen, he’ll only get excited and expect something from it when he’s not even sure. he knows that eunkyeong puts up a clear border for guys between bromate and romantic interest. he was surely a bromate and that was clear in eunkyeong’s book. of course, he had to continue being her friend. he didn’t want to risk that, on top of everything. he learned to keep it inside of him. he was patient, after all. he believed he could flush the feelings out slowly. he really did. especially, when he found out she ended up dating someone else. nobody ever found out, because he suddenly went to korea and became a trainee, never looking back to question his decision. he knew eunkyeong would be proud of him either way.
YOU WERE THERE WHEN TIMES WERE AT THEIR DARKEST
eunkyeong lost contact with him after he went to korea and became a trainee, whatever that meant but she would always remember their last conversation just the day before he went. he told her he’d go and she didn’t even hold him back. she knew it was different, she actually saw a certain urge in his eyes as if he was in a hurry or as if he was anxious. not a typical joshua type of behaviour for the guy who didn’t even panic when a food fight erupted in the cafeteria. for that whole conversation, she was actually proud of him. he up his guts and made the decision. there was determination in his eyes. he didn’t need her to reaffirm himself. was this the feeling of seeing someone you hold dear mature?

the two never really heard from each other until she heard from her mom that joshua was debuting as an idol. her mom was still close to joshua’s mom, even if her son was somewhere else in the world. she only knew that he was alive, was doing well, and living well in the country even with his clumsy korean. she would be glad to hear it. she would wonder about him but she’ll snap back into reality when she realizes that maybe he wasn’t wondering about her, at all even if he promised not to forget her and los angeles. she’ll do what he does, too. be alive, do well, and live well. because she knows he’d be proud and interested to see the direction she’s leading her own life.
ALWAYS SHOWING ME THE WAY, LEAD THE WAY
the two reconnected around the time seventeen performed in KCON LA 2017, around august. joshua sent a package to his parents a month before and there was also gifts for the moon family. there was a box addressed to her. she was enlightened to see him reach out. it’d been ages. and when she opened the box, it was full of handwritten letters, polaroids, and snacks from korea. think of it as a care package, he said. letters that told stories of his time there and his inner thoughts that she’ll understand. words of apology for not reaching out sooner or later. he even packed little packages for the other mates he wants her to mail to them. it was like joshua to gift such a gesture to show his inner thoughts. he left a sticky note with his phone number. he also left a list of song recommendations. he said that he wanted to start a new tradition between them. he’d send him one or two in every package he’d sent from then on. the whole idea of it was bold of him, she thought, but she liked his development.
she text him a text message, saying her thanks and to save the number as hers. he replied to that with an emoji and that was the end of the conversation until joshua asked her if she liked it. then she replied, yes and it was sweet of him to send it. next thing you know, joshua invites her family and his family to watch seventeen perform at KCON LA then she said yes. then, it led to a lot of layers of conversation that didn’t seem to end. she didn’t think much of it because they have years worth of catching up to do and she had a boyfriend at the time, anyways. for joshua, his heart was like the sky on the fourth of july or on new years’ night. his stomach was full of knots and he was over the moon. yes, this was the guy who wanted to flush out his feelings for moon eunkyeong. he did, it was the spur of the moment. a form of the word “happy” in the sense that he finally his guts to reconnect with a precious friend who is also his first love.
