The basics

NAME:  Kwon Wonhee

BIRTHDATE:  04/05/2005 (15)

BIRTHPLACE:  Anyang, South Korea

HOMETOWN:  Anyang, South Korea

LANGUAGE(S) SPOKEN:

Korean ⋮ There's really nothing else to say other than the fact that Wonhee's first and pretty much only language is Korean. I mean, it was hard enough for her to learn, so she's definitely not going to learn another languages any time soon.

English ⋮ Laughable; she can introduce herself, maybe. Her stuttering and speech delay is even worse in English, and there's she's trying hard enough to master Korean as it is. No need to equate another language into the equation.

HEIGHT & WEIGHT:  148 cm & 38 kg

FACE CLAIM:  Fantagio's Choi Yoojung (ex-IOI)
BACK UP FACE CLAIM:  April's Jinsol

APPEARANCE & STYLE:

The first thing anyone notes about Wonhee is that she is absolutely tiny. She's not a midget or anything like that, but even for her age, she's probably the shortest trainee there is. There are probably sixth graders taller than her for goodness sakes. And it's not like she weighs very much either. She's got a pretty fast metabolism (mainly 'cause she's just reached her teenaged years) but Wonhee doesn't really like to eat much either, so she's basically a stick. A small, fragile bird is what a lot of people compare her to, and they're not really all that wrong.

Wonhee, being on the younger side for a trainee, is exempt from things like dyeing her hair or piercings. While the other trainees may be told (forcefully suggested is the word she uses) to try a different hair style or look, Wonhee gets the get-out-of-jail card. Due to that, there's not much to her appearance - that's idol-like or out of the norm at least. Regardless, Wonhee's got a pretty cute face, and with her size, it's not hard to peg her as the adorable type. She likes being called pretty too though, even though she knows that technically no one can conclude whether she's pretty or not until after she goes through puberty. Regardless, Wonhee likes being complimented.

In terms of her style, Wonhee goes for comfort. She's not into tight, restrictive clothes, and is kind of a fashion terrorist that way. Baggy clothes on top of baggy clothes is her motto, and it's not unusual to see her dressed in a sweater two times her size along with baggy sweatpants. While she doesn't see any trouble with this, the company is pretty much always horrified with her appearance, so she's been forced into buying more fashionable clothes as of late. Because she's been scolded a lot due to her fashion, Wonhee ends up forgoing the baggy pants and slaps on a pair of leggings in addition to her oversized sweaters - aiming for that oversized look. It's not a big improvement (also because Wonhee never does her laundry so she'll often wear the same sweater for the whole week), but at least she looks presentable.

Personality

TRAITS:
+ imaginative, artistic, hardworking, calm, hopeful
– irrational, ditzy, dismissive, passive, disillusioned

There's never really a dull moment if you know Wonhee well. It's not like she's peppy or talkative, she's actually the opposite of that, but she's just fun to talk to. She doesn't have crowds of people following her, but she's not a longer either. The people that do take the time to actually understand her and wait for her to sort out her thoughts will find themselves with a wonderful conversation partner. Wonhee isn't too mature - obviously, she's only 15 after all - but her imagination makes up for it. A normal trip to the mall can become an adventure with three sequels and a movie adaptation if you let Wonhee run with it. She's a natural story teller (which is kind of amusing considering her speech delay) and is amazingly imaginative. She's the kind of person who can stare at the clouds and come up with dozens of different shapes and pictures - as well as string them altogether into one coherent and kick story. She's good at that kind of thing, looking at things that don't seem to really connect but somehow finding a similar trait amongst all of them. In this way, she's quite artistic as well. She's not creative, that's something different. It's more like Wonhee looks at things and sees the artistic potential within them and tries to bring it forth - usually with her words.

However, because her head is always up in the clouds thinking of stories and making connections, it's hard for Wonhee to come back to earth. She's had trouble with it before, getting out of her safe headspace, and it causes her to be very ditzy. From forgetting simple things such as meals to bigger, almost dangerous things like running onto a busy street, Wonhee has a hard time grounding herself in reality. She's irrational like that, always thinkning up grand scenarios and forgetting that life isn't a storybook. Things don't always have a happy ending - yet Wonhee can't wrap her mind around that. She's a bit naive and innocent in that sense. Wonhee's realities are slightly warped, she can't tell when her dreamland story starts and when the real world stops, and as such, she's filled with useless fantasies and intangible goals. She's the least logical person you'll ever meet, and by extension, she can also be pretty unreasonable. If you tell Wonhee that, no, clouds don't taste like cotton candy, there's probably a 0.00001% chance she'll believe you if she's really set her mind on it. Instead, she'll just ignore you and go about your way - making things like giving Wonhee advice or counselling her extremely hard.

She readily dismisses things and people that go against her beliefs and dreams. She doesn't try to fight you, no, Wonhee is too passive for that kind of thing. She's not good at arguing - words, though they're her best friend, also happen to be her greatest enemy - so she doesn't even try. She just knows she'll stutter, get things confused, pronounce things wrong, and be ridiculed. So she doesn't start in the first place. Even if someone is breathing down on her neck and screaming in her face, Wonhee will just retreat into her head - into the place in her mind where things are okay and she doesn't have a stupid disability that prevents her from spinning all the stories and tales she wants to share. Wonhee is passive in that manner, yet calm as well. She can stay collected in even the most heated situations, but it's not necessarily because of a good reason. It's more like she just disassociates with the situation entirely, and stares at everything through a rose-tinted lens.

However, that's not to say that Wonhee goes about her life without a care in the world. Wonhee cares, a lot actually. She's one of the most hard working and determined people you'll ever meet in fact. She's had to practically fight her way through life after all, so she's used to people ignoring her or looking down on her. Instead of shrinking away from the silent challenge however, Wonhee fights back. Not aggressively however, but with a silent, strong resolve. She'll work twice as hard as everyone else just to follow her dreams and aspirations. She's not ready to be tossed to the side just because she's small and weak looking. In fact, Wonhee's weaknesses become her strengths in this sense. Though she's disillusioned with the idea that life is just another story ("you're one step closer to a happy ending!" Wonhee says often), she's also hopeful. She's not optimistic, Wonhee knows a bad situation when she sees one, but she constantly holds the belief that everyone will be allowed to have their "happily ever after".

Due to that reason then, she's determined to work towards her own. She's working still, trhough the problems her stutter and speech delay cause her, and the results are proving to be good. So Wonhee takes that experience and applies it to life in general. To her, anything can be solved as long as you try hard enough. So she's that person in the group that, even though the deadline is in two hours and you just realized you have to change your topic, tells everyone to cheer up, drink some coffee, and get working.

However, Wonhee's obsession with stories is a blessing and a curse. While it gives her a sense of hope and is one of the things that helped her focus (Wonhee practically worships literature, she loves how the protagonist always beats any odds and how, even though she can't speak properly, she doesn't have to as long as she learns how to manipulate words to make sentences, paragraphs, and stories), it's also something she relies on too much. Often, because Wonhee takes longer to speak and get her thoughts out, she'll fall back on her storytelling ability. Essentially, she lies. When she's caught in a heated or tough situation, Wonhee almost impulsively starts spinning out a tale. While it's not one of her action packed adventure fantasy stories, it's definitely not the truth. Half-truths, she calls it, and she's gotten really good at it. Yeah, she went to the mall, but she also broke into the school with her friends before coming home - except you didn't ask about that, did you? Wonhee is a pathological liar, and sees nothing wrong with it. She can't actually, she's too stuck in her own world to realize it. She's almost invented this fairy tail like realm for herself, where nothing can hurt her, and lives in it. It's hard for her to come out of that trance - though music is one of the things that helps - and, as such, she can't help but lie. It hasn't gotten her into big trouble, it's not like it's a psychological problem (more like she's just a compulsive liar who lives in her headspace more often than not), but that's not to say that it won't lead to problems in the future.

GENERAL BG:

Wonhee is the youngest child to a family with three other kids. Her parents, Minkyung and Jinyoung, had been highschool sweethearts and stayed together even when Minkyung found out she was pregnant during their last year of highschool. Their first child was Woori, Wonhee's oldest sister. Next came Wonshik and Wooshin - identical twins. Finally, Wonhee was born and pretty much completed the family. Obviously, being born into a huge family like that, Wonhee was bound to be overshadowed. However, things worked out well - or, rather, they worked out as well as they could. Wonhee was usually taken care of by Woori, who, by this time, was around 13. It's almost like Woori, Minkyung, and Jinyoung all had a child to look after, with Wonshik and Wooshin being 7 at this time.

In any case, it's safe to say that Wonhee's home life was always pretty hectic and busy. With so many people running around, it was easy to drop out of the radar for a couple minutes, and Wonhee did that often. She wasn't as active as Wooshin - who had picked up taekwondo at a young age and was showing promise in it. Wonshik was also more calm, but he was doing really well in school, so Wonhee's parents were always driving one or the other twins to their lessons. As such, Wonhee usually hid around the house, thinking to herself and reading. She fell in love with fairytales, underdog type stories especially, and took inspiration from them.

Soon after Wonhee was born, she was diagnosed with a speech delay as well as a stutter. It started off casually, with her not speaking as much as her other siblings. Her parents, being busybodies, merely attributed this to the fact that she was more of a touch and feel person and ignored it. Even though there was a little voice at the back of their minds reminding them that Woori was definitely a lot more vocal at this age than Wonhee was, they brushed it aside. It got to the point where Wonhee would barely speak, making a couple of gurgled sounds here and there to prove that she wasn't mute now and then, but that's it. The one who decided to bring it up to their parents actually, was Wonshik, who had just recently read a story in which one of the characters had a speech disorder.

After deciding that, yes, maybe Wonhee was experiencing difficulties, Minkyung and Jinyoung found out that she had delayed speech. She learned Korean and languages in general at a slower pace than others, and because they initially ignored it, she was very much behind in terms of development. In addition to this, Wonhee was discovered to have a slight stutter later on in life. Not enough to make things worse, but definitely enough to make speaking and learning that much harder. However, the family took this news in stride, and everyone pitched in to help. After all, Wonhee was their precious baby sister, and though the twins loved to torment her, they loved her nonetheless. As such, they all began to help her with speaking, with Woori making Wonhee read her many books out loud to practice sentence structure to Wooshin and Wonshik teaching her new words that they learned from sports or studying - Wonhee was moving along steadily.

One of Wonhee's major problems however, was school. Obviously she was placed in an appropriate program, but her main problem was with paying attention. Wonhee, because of her love of reading, was constantly daydreaming during class. It was hard for her to focus, the only thing she ever did studiously was reading. She loves reading. Even though it was difficult for her to speak (she's better now but still stutters and takes longer to get her words out), no one would be able to tell she had a speech delay through writing. She loved the ability, the thought that she could finally let out all her dreams and ideas and mold them into a story, something that would connect with someone else and show them something Wonhee couldn't have even imagined. She loved that she could touch so many people in so many different ways through writing - and her stutter would never get in the way. In the same way, Wonhee discovered music.

Her school counsellor actually suggested it, telling her that people with accents would sometimes lose them through singing - because when you sing you pay more attention to how to say the words rhythmically and in tune rather than pronounce it the way you would normally. As such, Wonhee began to get into singing. And she loved it. Not only did her pronounciation improve, it also became another outlet for her to stay grounded. She would spend hours just singing in her room, wondering in awe at how confident and fluent her voice sounded as she sang through the lyrics. It helped her in class too, as long as she tapped out a tune or was allowed to listen to music while she worked, Wonhee would stay out of her mind. She didn't need the magic realm she made up after all, not when she could speak all she wanted as long as it was through song.

TRAINEE LIFE:

Fringe: 2 years (2018-2020)

Wonhee auditions for Fringe a year or so after she discovers music. Honestly, Wonhee feels kind of bad, seeing as she didn't have a burning desire to become an idol like some of the other trainees. Instead, Wonhee just wants to give back. Music became an outlet for her to become more confident, and she wanted to do the same thing to others. She wants to be the voice that flows through the earbuds, grounding others and making them feel more sure, more stable.

And so she starts her trainee life determined. She's not going to fall down, she conquered her early childhood obstacles, and if she could do that, she could do this. She doesn't start off as the best singer, not to mention she's got practically no experience in dancing, but she gets by. She's actually rejected by Fringe at first, but is called back in after some more consideration. Apparently, some of the staff members liked her face and decided to overlook the lack of technique in her audition. Regardless of that, Wonhee was glad to be in. She worked harder than she had ever before, and it showed. Her singing soon improved, showing that you not only needed talent but hard work as well. Soon enough, her vocals were quite developed - for her age at least. She continued to work hard in dancing, and though she finds it still awkward sometimes, she's no longer that stiff robot she once was. She actually recruits Wooshin to help her practice, and with his help along with her neverending determination and help from the coaches, Wonhee is getting better and better.

In terms of the enviroment itself, Wonhee found it hardest to make friends. She didn't mind the rigurous training or schedules - Wonhee would have probably made them for herself anyways. For her, it was the other trainees. Most of them were pretty competitive, seeing as Fringe wasn't a popular company (no where near the bigger companies at least), so they were all dead set on getting a spot on the lineup (even if a group hadn't been announced). As such, Wonhee with her soft character was quite intimidated by everyone. So Wonhee usually spent her time practicing by herself. However, in the end, she finally made friends. Moving away from the more aggressive trainees (who always yelled at her for having her head in the clouds), Wonhee found more like minded people - trainees who were just as ambitious, but less aggressive. She's still not friends with a lot of people, and she's not the kind of person to speak up first, but as long as she's able to communicate with her coaches and make weekly calls back home, Wonhee doesn't feel too lonely.

Relationships

FAMILY SITUATION:

Wonhee and her family are close. They all kind of fall over each other while they lived together, a bit like a bustling anthill, and though they had their fair share of bickering, it's not like they hate each other. Now that they're all grown up now, Wonhee feels a little disconnected from her family. They're not as close as before, with Woori starting her own family and Wonshik studying abroad, but Wonhee feels like they've still got those childhood memories tying them altogether.

With Minkyung and Jinyoung (both 47), Wonhee is a bit more distant. She doesn't blame them, it's hard to distribute love and time to all four of their children, but it's obvious that by the time Wonhee came around, they were kind of done with the concept of children. They still love her, and it's not like she's overshadowed or forgotten, but Wonhee just doesn't have anything stronger than the typical mother/father-daughter bond.

Woori on the other hand, is basically her "stand in" mother. At a healthy age of 28, Woori is now married and pregnant with her first second child. Wonhee still calls and texts her whenever she can though, and Woori treats her like her first child anyways. Even Woori's son, Sanghyuk, calls her his "big sister". It's endearing really, and Wonhee loves that she's finally not the youngest in the family. She doesn't miss the title in the slightest, seeing as how Wonshik and Wooshin would always take advantage of it, and is looking forward to having her brothers and sister's children to fawn over.

Wooshin, 22, is currently studying at university with a sports scholarship. He had been interested in taekwondo since he was a kid and continued along that path, leading him to get on quite a number of competitive teams. Interestingly enough, although Wonshik was the one who bullied and teased Wonhee the most when they were kids (he basically made her his slave since she was the youngest), they're the ones who talk the most now. It's probably because Wonshik is in America studying and Woori is busy with her own family, but Wooshin helped Wonhee with her dancing initially since he was the most athletic of the family and that caused them to bond.

Wonshik, 22, is in America, studying to become an architect. He had helped Wonhee a lot when they were kids, from defending her from Wooshin (though he often forced her to carry his study books) to teaching her and going with her to the library to pick out books. Now that he's in America though, they've lost a bit of their previous connection. Due to the time difference, Wonhee finds it hard to communicate with him - especially because he's often busy with his studies. However, Wonshik is the only one who can give Wonhee advice, and have her listen to him, so he's very much still there for her.

OTHER RELATIONSHIPS:

» observer | Lee Hyungyeon | 25 | trainee | bitter, ambitious, dependable, critical
Listen, you can't blame Wonhee's little fangirl heart for this, but the fact that Hyungyeon looks so much like Yoseob throws her off. She's spent most of her time singing Beast (now Highlight) songs, and the day Woori took her to a fansign was the day she died (it also happens to be her bank pin - 0721). As such, Wonhee can't help but keep tabs on Hyungyeon. She hasn't even really talked to him before, all she knows is that he's trained for a long time and seems kind of scary, but that doesn't stop her from staring at his face and walking away shakingher head in amazement.

» tentative buddies | Jeon Sariel | 18 | trainee | curious, friendly, insecure, envious
Sariel was one of the first people to introduce himself to Wonhee. He does it to everyone really, anyone he hasn't seen around lately he'll just go up to them and start talking. And since Sariel is so open minded and thoughtful of girls especially, he was one of the first to actually listen through Wonhee's constant stuttering and halts. They became friends, though Wonhee feels a bit odd about the whole thing. Sariel seems to be friends with everybody, so Wonhee isn't sure if she's really a friend or if he just treats everyone the same way.

» awkwardly unaware | Atlas | varies | idol | varies
To be completely honest, Wonhee didn't even know who Atlas was when she joined the company. She chose Fringe on a whim, and didn't bother to check the set list before she accepted the offer. As such, when she first talks to the trainees, it results in a ton of awkward moments when she has to go, "W-wait, A-at...las?" She slowly learns who they are now (though she kind of knew about Do or Die before, she just didn't pay attention to it) and feels a little ashamed and very awkward whenever she spies them walking around the company.

» student | Fringe Staff | varies | staff | varies
Wonhee has a pretty decent relationship with all of her coaches, though her rap coach always sighs a little whenever she walks in. She's got an especially close one with her vocal teacher, since she always tries to shard to improve in singing. However in general, Wonhee is pretty neutral about everyone. She doesn't hate anyone, but it's not like she's very close to any staff members (or trainees for that matter) either. The staff members do remember her however, as the "girl with the speech problem". It hurts a little whenever she overhears them talking about her like that, but Wonhee can't really say anything because, well, they're not wrong.

evaluation

⟪ How long have you been a trainee? ⟫

Wonhee fumbles at the question, wetting her lips slightly as she prepares the sentence in her mind. "Two years," she says weakly, happy that she didn't pronounce anything wrong. Her happiness is short lived however, when she's asked to repeat her answer again because she wasn't loud enough. "T-two years," Wonhee says, louder this time, and smiles awkwardly when the interviewer scrunches their eyebrows together and writes it down.

⟪ What made you want to become an idol? Why Fringe? ⟫

Wonhee smiles this time. "I want," she pauses, clearing and ordering the words in her mind. "To help others. Make them happy." She scrunches her eyebrows together, tapping her thigh absentmindedly before continuing, "music made me more confident. Focused. And so, I-I want to, to, to... to do that for others." Wonhee nods, a determined glint entering her eyes, as she imagines a future where at least one person relates to her music. To think that someone across the room, maybe across the globe would be able to listen to her voice and be brought to another world makes Wonhee smile, and the girl is startled when the interviewer taps on their clipboard. "O-oh," Wonhee shakes her head, clearing it of thoughts. "Why Fringe? I, uh, don't know. It, just, felt... r-right."

⟪ What do you consider your best attributes? ⟫

"I'm g-gen... ge... I mean what I sing," Wonhee gives up on the word genuine. She sees it in her mind but her tongue doesn't move to make the right shape despite her best efforts. "My voice is pretty stable too, and besdies," Wonhee smiles sweetly at the interviewer, "you can be the best vocalist there is but nothing matters if your heart isn't in it. Kind of r-romantic don't you think?"

⟪ What do you consider your weaknesses?⟫

"My speech," Wonhee points to . "Speaking... I'm not good at that." She gives the interviewer a flustered grin. "I'm working on it though. Which I guess is another s-strength, because I'm determined you see? B-but you're asking... about weaknesses... right," Wonhee pauses, focusing in on her flaws. "I'm also kind of small? I d-don't know if that has anything to do with things but I guess I'm not going to be the most impressive when I d-dance?"

⟪ How do you feel about the other trainees? ⟫

"They're... passionate," Wonhee decides, skipping over the first couple of words that came to her mind. Scary. Aggressive. Competitive. "They seem like n-nice enough people I guess... I haven't talked to many of th-t-them though."

⟪ Why should we choose you for our future project group? ⟫

"I don't care how hard or how long I have to work," Wonhee says resoutely. She stares at the interviewer confidently, exuding more charisma than ever before. "No matter how many times I have to p-practice, I will get through this and debut. I can sing well, and my vocals mean something - unlike some other people. Even if you don't p-put me in... this group, I'll be working to get into the next one, and... t-then the o-one after that as well."

skills

TALENT TWIN:  April's Jinsol (1) (2)

STRENGTHS:  Wonhee's strength is her singing. It's not the most unique or strong voice, but she's confident. Every note she sings, she commits to it. It's completely different from when she's talking, when she sings, it's almost like she transforms into someone else. And so she'll always give it her all when she sings, whether it be a sad or happy song, you'll definitely be able to feel Wonhee's earnest feelings through the song. She conveys emotions really well despite her age that way, seeing as her whole dream revolves around connecting to people and making them feel the emotion of the song through her singing.

As well, since she's been taught dance only through the company, she's very good at copying it. She doesn't have her own style, but in that way, she'll never stick out and look awkward. Since she doesn't have much experience in it, she only knows how to copy the moves shown to her - meaning she's always going to be in sync with the others. While this means she can't freestyle, it also means she can at least follow along and not cause too many problems. In addition, Wonhee is very good at adlibs or choreography changes. As mentioned before, she just wants to connect to the audience, so whenever she's given a chance to wink or shoot some fanservice into the crowd/camera, Wonhee will do it naturally and seamlessly.

WEAKNESSES:  The only part of an idol that she fails at is rapping. She can sing, sure, but rapping just brings her speech delay back and slaps her harder than before. She can't get past more than a couple of words before she falters and stutters. In this sense, she's bad at singing fast paced songs (like those talk-singing lines) as well. She also struggles a lot with pronounciation in general. Of course, she's way better at singing than talking, but still, it takes her a long time to learn the lyrics. She gets them of course, they're just like another story to her, but in terms of having to say them out loud, now that takes practice.

Another weakness for Wonhee is her age. She's quite young so her voice is definitely not matured yet. She's still got that young timbre to her voice, meaning it's not as powerful as others. Besides, she's constantly worried about how she'll sound like after going through puberty - especially since sometimes there can be drastic changes. In any case, Wonhee lacks skill and technique in that aspect, since she's young and sort of new to the whole singing thing (she used to just sing for pleasure and sure, she's getting lessons now but that can't really compare to a whole lifetime of vocal training), so she's not insanely good. Yet.

You can matchmake if you want, but honestly Wonhee is too smol for a relationship at this age. Maybe a little puppy crush?
