walk past haesook's desserts located in hongdae, seoul when it's about to close and you'll see a forlorn girl in the corner dozing off, still in her uniform. or wander into seoil university's campus and walk into the lecture about human services & community organization, and you'll see a girl in a grey hoodie trying not to nod off at the front row, pencil flying across her notes in order to keep herself awake. or walk around hongdae around dusk and you'll see two girls and one guy among the many buskers, and perhaps you'll see the said girl shedding her fatigue for once and looking like the twenty two years old at the prime of her youth, the twenty two year old she is.

Full Name. yoo, sangah. ( 유상아 )
Nicknames.

yoosung : literally 'meteor'. used by kiwoong, it stemmed from sangah's formerly vibrant personality. he simply paired up sangah's family name and first syllable of her first name, found it was similar to yoosung and called it "a great coincidence". even though sangah is now nowhere near a meteor, he still calls her that.
ttal : literally 'daughter'. used by her grandma, plainly because sangah's pretty much never been called that by her parents before- at least, not affectionately. and so her gran took up the 'mission' and promised that she'll call her that so many times she'll make up for sangah's years of no affection.
bbanjjag : literally 'sparkles'. used by hyunjin. the first time he saw her singing he practically saw her eyes come to life and started calling her that, first sarcarstically and afterwards affectionately.
ahahah : found by jiyeon and soon spread to the rest of nascent, this cringeworthy nickname came from the last syllable of sangah's name and the affectionte 'ah' koreans add after names. the first two "ah"s are short and the third one is longer. it's dumb, really, but sangah responds to it.
seoil uni grad : used disdainfully by miso. miso's a seoul university graduate and sangah's university sounds familiar but is nowhere close. every time miso sees or even hears about sangah she'll drawl "ah, the seoil uni grad," it hurts sangah, but she takes it.
byul : used by hwasung. sangah's always wanted to be a star, and hwasung wasn't able to pronounce "star" when she first planned on calling sangah that, and settled with byul. it stuck and is still used, though sangah's heart tugs a little every time she hears it.
derivatives like yoo, sang and yooyoo are used by other friends.

korean : fluent. it is, afterall, her mothertongue. as a young woman who was born and grew up in seoul, it's only natural she has a seoul dialect. her voice is annoyingly soft and she has practically no intonation. constantly mumbling in monotone and sounding breathless all the time, no one likes having a conversation with her. her words are dragged out and she mixes up vocabulary frequently. when she sings, however, her sotto voice dissisipates when she's singing. as if she's suddenly found an immense amount of energy, her voice is orotund and surprisingly chesty, as some would describe.
english : chaotic. she did have lessons in school and passed all her exams, but she can only maintain the most basic of basic conversations and has forgotten 90% of what she was taught. she also has a very obvious korean accent. she can read and write basic words with difficulty, and can listen to and pronounce words but probably has no idea what they mean.

stuck with learning a major she doesn't even like and studying at a university people sneer at, sangah is not the instagram-famous, korean university student her peers back in middle school expected her to be. between working part-time, busking, and attending lessons where she battles with sleep, saying that she's dissatisfied with her current life would be an understatement. it's her fourth and last year of this tiring schedule, and while she can't wait to leave this 'best time of her youth' behind, she's terrified to think of her future — with a practically useless degree from an infamous university, she knows she's going to face unemployment ( especially in an industry which isn't really needing more employees ), and when that time comes, she knows she'd just crumble further, and she's afraid of the prospect.

THE SHOOTING STAR OVER THERE scurrying through the seoil campus with her head lowered and files almost tumbling out of her hands, sangah is not the hot mess you'd expect her to be. sure, she seems tired all the time and never seems to have free time on hand, and that would probably be because she's just taken up all the responsibilities for the group project. again. and as she runs about in seoul at 1am with a bag of hoppang in one hand and a bag of gyeongju bread in another, she recites the basic forms of humans needs, thinking about how to write her report and how to guilt-trip hwasung into helping her with the powerpoint again. most of the her classmates expect her to get an f every semester, but sangah actually passes with a b pretty much every year - not a valedictorian, but a better grade than anyone ever expected. there is a certain reason why many people flock to sangah whenever they need something. while she can't be identified as a maternal figure, she does seem to be the older sister figure who's working numerous part time jobs but still makes time for her siblings. you can always rely on sangah for anything, anywhere, and with her practical thinking and logical mind, she'd be able to whip up a solution right there and then. she never complains and takes all the responsibilities thrown at her and just goes with the flow. she has an eye for detail when it comes to the things she actually cares for. jiyeon's wavering smile and hyunjin's twitching eye don't go unseen and she'd drag heavy steps to give them the little comfort she should be saving for herself but provides for others instead.

IT FEELS LIKE IT'S TALKING TO ME sangah is constantly tired, and it shows. she's quick to detect any changes around her and is very affected by her surroundings, leading many to ask her if she's that tired or if she's on her period. she seems paranoid and has numerous nervous ticks that make it obvious she hasn't slept for quite a while. her ears are alert and she can hear everything said about her and she can pick up her name as her eyes glance around furtively. she'd fume internally and a clouded expression would flash across her face but she'd never talk back. she doesn't have the nerve to, nor does she know how to. and so she lets people tramp all over her without even fighting back and letting people take advantage and use her as they just smile and say, "you'll help me, right? you're sangah, of course you would!" as she'd hold back her grimace and smile. the word 'no' is not in her vocabulary and she always goes along with the flow without any objection. due to her many years of taking up all the responsibilities, she's gotten used to having to do anything and would now voluntarily take up responsibilities she knows she'd barely finish while she internally curses herself and everyone else. but as usual, she wouldn't voice her opinions and is so scared that people will berate or shun her that she just lets it be. she's scared of being left out and not belonging and is constantly fearful that something unpleasant will happen and is on her toes all the time, leading her to be even more sensitive and prone to negative comments than she already is. it causes her to feel down all the time as she thinks that those people laughing over there are laughing at her and that those sniggers are directed at her. she's scared of losing her place in the world and so she bends herself to fit others, forgetting that if one bends too much, one breaks.

Timeline

1993 -1997

sangah is born on christmas day in 1993, but is not the present her parents were hoping for. they don't want a girl, and her father almost abandoned her at the hospital. he would have if her mother hadn't reminded him of the consequences and the law and the two reluctantly took her back home and named her sangah. the chinese characters for this name literally means thinking of a son.

baby sangah is taken care of by her grandmother, chun haesook. her parents simply do not care and cite to be very busy with work and leave sangah at her grandmother's household. it's as if they never had this child. sangah's cries have never graced the yoo household and her parents have never changed her diapers or bathed her.

yoo bogyung is born in the summer of 1997 and her parents are thrilled. they name their son treasure. suddenly her parents aren't so busy anymore.

haesook is fed up and asks to get the guardian rights to sangah and rightfully take her granddaughter under her wing. sangah's parents are more than happy to do so.

1997 - 2009

sangah grows to be the most ougoing and vivacious child the staff at haesook's dessert shop had ever seen. she bumbled around the store, garnering grins from the customers, singing songs at the entrance to get attention for the store and swiping a few bites from the simmering concotions in the kitchen. she was a delight to have around and she grew to be an outgoing adolescent. she rarely saw her family but she was perfectly fine with living in the apartment above the store and running deliveries when she had finished her homework. she'd busk with hwasung and kiwoong in hongdae, the two girls singing as kiwoong played the guitar.

she wasn't someone with great grades, but she had more friends than she can count and she was loved by everyone, anywhere she went.

life was great.

2010 - 2015

haesoook suddenly passes from a heart attack. the loyal employees take over the shop.

sangah goes back to her parents. she is ridiculed, insulted and shunned. they fulfill the roles of a guardian, paying their bills, attending parent-teacher meetings, sitting in the audience when sangah's school invites the parents to a talent show.

but they have never been parents. sangah could be the main character of a musical and when asked they'd have no recollection of the plot because they weren't paying attention.

they simply don't care for the girl. as long as she lives and they don't get reported for child negligence, they don't care whether their daughter is happy or not.

sangah loses her spark. she spirals down, down, down. the corners of her eyes are down instead of up, her back becomes hunched, she talks less, and she doesn't thrive anymore. her friends notice and instead of caring, they move away.

this isn't the sangah we liked and befriended, they'd say. I'm still the same person, please find me again, sangah'd think.

only two stay by her side, but they aren't enough. sangah continues to fall.

2016 - Present

sangah's stressed, she's unhappy, but she still likes singing. she's never had lessons but according to kiwoong has raw talent. she continues to show up in hongdae, but now kiwoong is rarely seen with her and hwasung starts to play the guitar instead of singing instead.

sangah is not going to let life take singing away from her.

jiyeon walks past her busking and is enarmoured by her voice. sangah finishes her acoustic rendition of huh gak and yoo seungwoos' monodrama and smiles. jiyeon breaks her serendipity.

"hi! this is really sudden but I find you a really good singer."

"oh." she's taken aback. years have went by without people praising her singing.

"would you like to earn money from singing? of course you would! come to auditions!" jiyeon smiles, shoving a flyer into sangah's hands.

sangah has a project meeting that day, but hwasung thinks she can skip it for once. she literally hauls sangah up onto her shoulder and transports her to the place for auditions.

hwasung is the walking definition of 'don't judge a book by its cover' as she shuts up all the gossiping ahjummas whispering about her tattoos and choice of fashion with her seoul university student id with the words 'college of medicine' etched on it.

hwasung and sangah met when they were merely eight. both were loud, outgoing children who gave teachers headache and threw so many spitballs at each other the detention room was their playroom. everyone knew the two deadly sisters who hit and swore and pranked their way through their school years. as teenagers they were swearing, insulting and hitting each other every second and many question whether they were enemies or best friends.

many got their answer when they witnessed sangah's transformation. the formerly jovial girl who had spent all her time at school goofing around and just having fun was suddenly just sitting there staring into space or sleeping all day long. the people around her went from a whole bunch of shouting teens to hwasung and hwasung alone, as the latter sat with her in silence, a hand on her head.

hwasung is the only one who knows all of sangah's woes and trust me, if hwasung ever saw sangah's parents she'd probably beat them up because she has the ability to. she loves sangah and even though she never showed it before, she does now, reminding sangah every now and then that there are people who care about her in this world. sangah is incredibly grateful for her best friend's existence, and hates herself for feeling a stab of jealousy every now and then when she sees hwasung being so successful.

ah, bogyung and sangah. you might think they don't get along, but they get along just fine. bogyung is incredibly uncomfortable with how his parents treat his sister but he doesn't say anything about it, idling around and letting it be. the two siblings are very similar in terms of personality ( or at least, sangah's current personality ) and they're incredibly awkward. years of not growing up together and having no mutual friends cause them to have no topics to talk about so when the two meet up ( because bogyung is precious and wants to get closer to his older sister ), they just sit there staring at their own cups of coffee. he doesn't look down on sangah for being in a bad university when he attends yonsei and most definitely does not listen to his parents' bullcrap about how bogyung is so much better than sangah because he's their son. in all honesty they don't love each other because there isn't anything for them to base their own emotions on, but they do cherish and have a soft spot for each other. they both hope that they'll grow closer as the days pass.

kiwoong and sangah have been together since they were fifteen, when atrraction was all that mattered in a relationship and nothing could shake their feelings for each other. they were the couple everyone envied, and some actually bet that they'd stay together throughout college and get married. but college is when reality strikes you in the face, and with sangah's change in personality, their distance has become even more evident. the loud and outgoing girl he loved isn't there anymore, just as the demure and shy boy she loved is gone. with differing backgrounds, kiwoong's parents have been trying to get them to break up as well. and while he swears he still loves sangah — he does, he really does, he can't deny that the spark isn't there anymore. and while he knows that relationships shouldn't be based on the 'spark', especially not a relationship that's been going on for seven years, he reckons that he has no reason to stay with his first girlfriend, and he should give himself more choices, instead of staying with one girl who's too tired to even give him a kiss. for the past two years, their relationship has been pretty rocky — kiwoong's been seeing another woman, and sangah knows. she just hopes that one day they'll break up, and is happy with the dates he gives her, where he treats her well as if nothing is wrong. he feels guilty, and he really does love sangah, but it's the thrills of meeting someone else secretly and the more, well, passionate encounters that compell to keep seeing the other woman.

they finally, finally break it off when hyunjin walks in and tells sangah that he just saw kiwoong and miso across the street hand in hand. grief flashes through her and turns into white fury as she throws down the mic stand ( to jiyeon's wince because holy the mic stand is expensive and everyone else's surprise ) and stalks right out, meeting them as the two cross the road. they saw her, miso sneered and to kiwoong's credit he looked guilty, but he never let go of miso's hand, nor did he try to defend himself. he just stood there looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights, and hyunjin, who was behind sangah, swore he could hear her heart break.

with tears b in her eyes, sangah uttered "I've been pretending to not notice for years and...and... I love you, I still do, but let's this end this for both of us." she stormed back into the band room and kiwoong didn't even bother to chase her.

gone are the eyes twinkling with exhilaration, gone are her luscious brown curls, gone are the white complexion and full cheeks. in their places are dull, lifeless eyes lined with dark eye circles, unhealthy , dry locks, and hollow cheeks with noticeable pores. formerly the type of girl you'd momentarily fall in love with on the street, sangah now is the frazzled young woman who you see and immeditely sympathize with. she just looks incredibly tired all of the time, usually seen in a hoodie and leggings, with the strings of her hoodie pulled so the hat frames her face tightly. her eyes, formerly adorned with makeup and a sparkle, are now decorated with eye bags, undereye circles, and fatigue. immense fatigue. gone is the bounce in her step as sangah drags her feet and stumble around with a hunched back, making her 164cm seem more like a 158, her arms swinging by her side without energy. a dreary aura surrounds her twenty four seven, and paired with her not caring about her own appearance, sangah looks like a sloth all of the time. a sloth with striking features, but those features all get overshadowed by uncombed hair, dirty clothes, thin stature ( she's underweight at 42 kg ) and sickly complexion.

fans of nascent never really recognize sangah when she's not dolled up because of the baggy hoodies and oversized sweaters that hide her body shape she wears when she's out and about normally. none of her clothes seem to fit and since her back is hunched miso has described her to be a sack of potatoes, which is really just a mere exagerration. she doesn't really care about what she wears and everything seems lose on her thin frame. however, she is still... sort of presentable as the colours of her outfit wouldn't clash as she only chooses pastels or monochromes that ensure that she won't stick out like a sore thumb, which is perfect for her as she loves blending in .

on stage, however, the vocalist of nascent is edgy and gives off a "bad girl" vibe. let's just say that everyone's jaws dropped in horror when they saw sangah on the day of their first performance. where does she get her clothes from when it's time to perform? hwasung. what does hwasung wear? anything that labels her as a girl crush and anything with black on it. black graphic tees with tight-fitting leggings that show off sangah's lean legs has male fans going crazy whenever she bends down or moves her legs. her outfits range from black crop tops with fishnet stockings and black denim shorts to white slogan tees stuffed into high-waisted trumpet pants to large sweaters with neon words that she pairs with shorts so shorts she looks waist down.

sangh is currently studying at seoil university, majoring in human services & community organization. it was never her goal, it just...happened when she practically flopped most of her tests after her grandma passed.

haesook's desserts is still here to this day, with a 58 year old ahjussi called bang goo running it with a few other similar-aged, loyal employees. sangah often works there as well and mostly does the deliveries, because she doesn't want the middle-aged men and women running around and potentially getting hurt. she also takes orders at the shop itself when the shop gets busy. and it's usually pretty busy.

so yes, she has a motorcycle liscence.

sangah's very, very insecure about her appearance. she still is to this day, but the nascent members ( mostly hyunjin ) have raised her self esteem by a lot so she's willing to take selfies now. but she'll put on full makeup and use an editing app before posting the pictures.

she can't really actually use makeup, but hwasung is teaching her.

despite having been in a relationship for seven years, sangah is still a . before, it was immoral, afterwards she was just too down and tired all the time to do anything, so it never happened.

she shows signs of mild dysthymia but has never gotten around to getting a check-up or therapy.

she actually likes skinship. a lot. she's always hugging the members and putting her arms around their shoulders of patting the female members' butts.

she's really good at making korean desserts, and is exceptional at making geonsi daja. she likes to make some for her friends when she's feeling happy. which was rarely, but more common now.

she holds her alcohol and spices really well.

she absolutely loves the bands and would practically do almost anything for it. she wants to bond with everyone and really wants the band to live long.

she's a full lyric soprano. her vocal range is c#3 ~ a6, which is 3 octaves and 4 notes. she has a very well trained and consistent mixed register often carrying resonance up to c#5/d5 and her support can sometimes be carried up to eb5/e5. she knows how to lighten the mix the higer she goes and has a well placed sound in the mix and lower register. she sings with a risen soft palate and has practically no weak registers. she also has very smooth legato singing, can maintain her tone down to c#3 and a relaxed falsetto up to e5/f5.

however, her mix can get too heady at times and lose projection. her notes above eb5/e5 are constricted with a slightly risen larynx and tends to close on the 애/에 vowel sound. her runs also seem to be messy and inaccurate at times.

she started singing when she was four, really, as she sang along with her grandmother. she sang to veteran singers like lee sunhee and kim wansun.

she's never had vocal lessons.

she started busking when she was sixteen as an outlet of her emotions. it used to be her and hwasung on vocals and kiwoong on guitar but now it's her on vocals and hwasung as guitar and backing vocals. the people in hongdae recognise them and hwasung has her own little fan club.

HYUNJIN COUGHS INTO HIS HAND, "OKAAAY SO... HEY, UH SANGAH, YEAH UH NICE TO MEET YOU. SO, HOW THE HELL DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE AUDITION?"

oh. uh shifts awkwardly she- HYUNJIN "THAT'S GREAT AND ALL BUT WE CAN'T HEAR YOU." oh, sorry. I said, coughs, she, points to jiyeon approached me when I was busking.

"WOW THAT'S GREAT. YOU BUSK? YOU DON'T LOOK LIKE A BUSKER." HE DEADPANS, JIYEON ELBOWS HIM SHARPLY "OUCH! – JIYEON– OKAY OKAY. UH... OH, WHAT MADE YOU AUDITION?"

oh. uh. uh. I really do like singing, so... she looks down and fiddles with her fingers so I came. yeah. and, uh she, points to jiyeon who offers a huge smile and a wave as sangah diverts her gaze immediately, leading to a frown from jiyeon and a snort from hyunjin said I could earn money by singing and well I need the money and if I can do something I love to earn money...why not?

"YOU'RE DOING IT FOR THE MONEY. COOL. SO LIKE... CAN YOU EVEN PLAY AN INSTRUMENT? SING? WHAT CAN YOU OFFER THE BAND? WHY ARE YOU EVEN HERE?" HYUNJIN'S GAZE IS SHARP AND JIYEON IS STARTING TO PANIC.

sangah sighs at the expected reaction. I can sing. I didn't want to be here, don't look at me like that. her eyes widen at her own sudden outburst sorry.

"IS THAT ALL YOU CAN DO OR...? GOT ANY PARTY TRICKS OR SOMETHING, I DUNNO, ANY SPECIAL TALENTS?"

I make really good tteok. all kinds of them, especially geonsi daja. HYUNJIN: "HOW IS THAT EVEN A SPECIAL TALENT?" JIYEON GLARES AT HIM AND GRINS. "THAT'S GREAT! I LOVE SOME GOOD TTEOK." HYUNJIN ROLLS HIS EYES AND LEAVES ABRUPTLY.

JIYEON SIGHS AND SMILES APOLOGETICALLY. "HAVE ANY DREAMS FOR YOURSELF AND THE BAND? GOT A GOAL MAYBE?"

sangah allows a tiny grin to flash on her face as a form of reassurance I hope we succeed! and I'd like to keep singing until my chords fail me. jiyeon nods, extremely satisfied with the short but sweet answer.

"SO, WHAT IS MUSIC TO YOU? WHAT KIND DO YOU LIKE?" JIYEON THROWS FURTIVE GLANCES AT THE DOOR.

uh. sangah looks down uncomfortably as she squeezes her eyes shut as she remembers hyunjin's stoic expression music... singing....it's been a part of my life since I was a kid? I used to sing at the entrance of my grandma's shop and...uh, I busked. I busk, sorry. as you know. stupid stupid stupid of course she knows but I haven't really had the opportunity to sing nowadays and... tears well in her eyes and she sniffs loudly as jiyeon panics.

"THAT'S COOL THAT'S COOL. SO, HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAPPEN TO EARN RIGHT NOW? ARE YOU EVEN WORKIN–" "JIYEON. YOU CAN'T JUST ASK PEOPLE THAT." HYUNJIN CALLS FROM OUTSIDE THE DOOR. "BUT I NEED TO–" HE BURSTS IN, GRABS JIYEON'S HAND AND MUTTERS A QUICK, "IF YOU'LL EXCUSE US FOR A MOMENT." BEFORE DRAGGING HER OUT.

sangah sighs. dear lord. she mutters to herself. we're screwed.

"OKAY I'M, AND WILL TRY ASKING A MORE... SUBSTANTIAL QUESTION NOW. OKAY, WHAT GOT YOU INTO MUSIC?" HYUNJIN YELLS AGAIN. "WHAT WILL YOU EVEN DO WITH THIS INFO?" "SHHH I'M ASKING SANGAH NOT YOU."

my grandma sang when she was baking. I sang along.
