people describe jinhyuk as a mystery, and they're really not wrong. the way he treats people can vary greatly and it's never smart to get to know him through word of mouth because chances are you'll meet him and find what you've heard to be inaccurate. first glance and people see a charismatic individual with piercing eyes scanning everything in front of him without a word. he then decides whether he likes you or not and how to treat you. he knows it's wrong to judge based on first impressions and does change how he treats people afterwards but it's usually too late. he can't help it - blame his father.

if jinhyuk likes you, you automatically gain an older brother: a gruff, acerbic one, but an older brother nevertheless. he's still incredibly straightforward and says things without thinking, but there's a certain care laced through it. he harshly berates people for not taking care of themselves, listing all the consequences 'this is why I told you to be careful on that show. do you not think? this twisted ankle means you're missing out on a whole comeback. happy now?' while he cooks them porrridge, fluffs their blankets and brings medicine to their bedside. after hearing everything about a situation, he is the first to tear into people who've wronged those close to him - his sister's exes, s' rivals - he's calm and collected when people cross him (on the surface, at least), but tends to lose his temper immediately when people turn to him for advice. thing is, it's hard to shake jinhyuk off because he doesn't give up on those he's deemed worthy of his attention even if they've done something wrong. he will always be there for you, usually a silent shoulder for you to cry on because he knows he can say the worst things at the wrong times, but he will be there.

sometimes he feels like he's stretched too thin. so many people turn to him for help yet they think he's got it all together so he doesn't know who to ask when he needs someone. his father has trained him to solve problems by himself and never ask for help, and over the years he's grown to understand that it's perfectly reasonable to do so, but still refrains from doing so unless absolutely necessary because internally, he still equates asking for help as defeat or failure. he often takes on more than he can chew because he doesn't trust other people can do as good a job as he does, and while he does end up fulfilling the tasks, he ends up with circles that reach his chin and a pale complexion that screams 'this man hasn't slept in three days'.

what happens if jinhyuk doesn't like you? he's rude and dismissive, but he rarely lets his distaste show explicitly. he doesn't smile at his friends, yet he will smile at rivals as he speaks in a polite tone that sends chills down peoples' spines. he won't go out of his way to hurt people, but will vow revenge on those who hurt him, calmly and carefully devising how to utilise his connections and fortune to bring that person down. because above all, the person jinhyuk likes the most is himself. he cares deeply for some people, yes, but his first priority will always be himself. perhaps it was his father's fault, perhaps he was just born this way, but he will choose his own comfort and riches over other people. it's not obvious - the expensive clothes are attributed to his background - but let's just say his companies turn exceptionally high profits. he doesn't do anything illegal nor actually create physical harm, but he does utilise loopholes in laws and policies. he feels guilty sometimes, but the laps of luxury are where he grew up in, so as he settles back into his leather sofa in his penthouse apartment, he tries to not give a . thankfully in his daily life, he rarely has to choose between money and his friends, but if his company said him going solo would be more beneficial, guess what he'll choose?

tl:dr, he will help you hide a body, but you need to remember a) he knows how to hide a body and b) he might take money to hide yours as well.

Background. the most vivid sight (that isn't homework or classes) he can conjure from his childhood is his father's back. yeo taejun had inherited taepyung corp. from his father and was determined to make it an even bigger company. everything jinhyuk said that wasn't about academics or business fell on deaf ears, and the only time he got to see his dad was when he was lecturing him or preaching his business wisdom. his mother, shin yeoreum, was  a kind, sweet woman, but he still vied for attention from his father. jinhyuk was pressured to excel in everything he learnt, but despite countless scoldings and beatings, jinhyuk could never manage to come out on top. his father deemed not a worthy investment and eased up on the excessive tutorial lessons after jinhyuk graduated primary school, giving him slightly more free time. taejun was not a ist man and decided to let jinhyuk's older sister yeo jina, who was excelling at everything, take over the company afterwards.

but jinhyuk could practically cut the disappointment with a knife every time he saw his father, so he resolved to continue learning english, business and economics because he couldn't bear being a complete black sheep. his tutor would reflect that he was an intelligent boy who was flexible with his thinking, but his father would always point at jinhyuk's grades and disagree. the lack of attention from his family meant jinhyuk had more time to hang out with his friends, who would let him listen to the newest songs. he was interested immediately, not because of a love for music, but how there was so much attention and love for the idols. he yearned for such things, believing that if he became famous and successful his father would spare him another glance. he began diving into music, and most pop songs were so happy and cute he finally understood why people said music could unite people. the lighthearted beat and fun lyrics called out to him and he found a way to escape from the suffocating house as soon as he put his earbuds in. it genuinely made him happy and he finally landed on resolving to debut as an idol. 

jinhyuk had tried to keep his aspirations from his family, but his mother noticed and was over the moon there was one person in the household who didn't revolve around business and numbers. she used her own money to send jinhyuk to buy him better headphones and dancing lessons, happy her son had a hobby he genuinely enjoyed. although jinhyuk would just tell his mom he was investing in himself, he couldn't hide the victorious smile on his face whenever he completed a difficult choreography. it was freeing to leave the house and accomplish something by himself despite how sweaty and tired he would be afterwards. by that time, jinhyuk was actively writing his own melodies and lyrics, genuinely loving what he did. he knew his father would object, but he didn't care - his father had ignored him for so long and he had found something else to run after. 

that was until jinhyuk heard his father yelling over the phone about a problem in one of his companies. after listening in for a while, he realised how to solve the situation and out of spite he had walked over and nonchalantly told his father his view on the whole thing. only then did his father realise that jinhyuk, while not academically talented, was indeed smarter than he had expected. he started bringing jinhyuk to business meetings. now, jinhyuk knew his father was shady - no one who earns that much was innocent - but it was only after shadowing his father for two months did he realise the extent his father would go to. he had seen enough proof of disposed bodies and corruption to know that he had no interest in taepyung corp. at all. at 18 he was accepted by sm entertainment with what he called a self-written song. his father was furious and jinhyuk was laughing silently at how the veins popped out from the old man's forehead until his father roared he would disown him.

that scared jinhyuk. he would rather die than admit it, but he was so used to the lifestyle he couldn't imagine losing it. it was his mother, daughter of another large conglomerate herself, who stepped up and said that if taejun didn't let jinhyuk pursue what he wanted to do, she would a) divorce him, b) expose his affair and c) have her brother's company stop partnering with his. after a lengthy, icy conversation, jinhyuk was permitted to continue his path if he kept a few businesses on the side. 

it wasn't hard to think of what he wanted to start with: he took one look at his closet and wasinspired to ask his sister to start a clothing label with him. he looked over the clothes he had and reflected on what could make them even better, sketching new items and having jina look them over. jina would also give him ideas on what she would like and soon after the label NIJ2 was born. it's a wonder why he had enough time to build a whole label while training - he liked to tell himself he was good at balancing his duties, but in truth sm was lenient with him, even introducing him as an smrookie. however after an increasing number of trainees complained that jinhyuk was missing far more practice than others, sm asked jinhyuk to leave the company. he was done with the company the moment they asked him to do so, and stormed out of the company in a huff.

he took a rest and focused on NIJ2, and was scouted by noir after he grew more and more famous on instgram as 'the hot ex-sm trainee with a nice soundcloud'.

seungjin.

the thing is, seungjin was, and most probably still is, more talented than jinhyuk, who noticed when they would write songs together. seungjin's lyrics were more clever and the melodies he created actually tugged at heartstrings. all their happy times writing music together came to a screeching halt when a very unconfident jinhyuk stole seungjin's song to audtion for sm, confident the younger boy would not dare do anything about it.

seungjin didn't, but imagine jinhyuk's shock when he saw seungjin in produce 101 and then debuting as a soloist under starship. although revolt is still much more popular, seungjin is now growing increasingly famous, and jinhyuk would be lying if he said he wasn't terrified. seungjin has just talked about his single mother in interviews, but that doesn't stop jinhyuk from breaking into a cold sweat every time he sees seungjin's face on tv.

 

rebels.

jinhyuk isn't sure when he started loathing his fans. maybe when he was announced as an smrookie and people started to leave thirsty comments. maybe it was when they found jina's social media accounts and bombarded her with questions about himself. maybe when people would stop him in the streets, hogging him for pictures even though he politely said he was busy. maybe when people would sit in NIJ2 for a chance to see him but not actually buy anything. maybe when fans grabbed his clothes when he was walking past after he debuted. maybe when sasaengs started bothering his mother and jina.

it didn't matter. what mattered was he felt mostly distaste and hatred for the throng of screaming rebels every time he was on a music show or holding a concert. it was better at fanmeets because most were respectful, but he had to force a smile on his face every time someone put a flower wreath and animal ears on his head. he absolutely hated fans not using his stage name when talking about him- they weren't friends and he used a stage name for a reason. it's not like he's not thankful, he is, and he constantly reminds himself that they are the reason where he is today. but then he logs into instagram, sees the multitude of rebels waiting outside their dorms and spamming jina's instagram with 'where is jinhyuk?', he can't help the curses that spill out of his mouth as s look at him silently.
