I AM A GATES SCHOLAR!!!!
IT'S OFFICIAL!! I AM A SCHOLARSHIP WINNER!!
In my last post I explained how they mixed up my package and I received someone else's letter. I wasn't 100% sure if I won it until they emailed me this letter. I was so happy and relieved that I didn't have to worry anymore. I am so grateful for this opportunity.
I am faced with a seemingly materialistic problem, I can pick ANY uiversity in the country. I am such a lucky person to be given a chance like this. But I didn't apply everywhere. I want to stay in my home state Michigan for undergraduate. At first I picked a smaller, cheaper school before I was notified as a winner. I did so much research on the school and I was even going to try for the honors college. But I'm having second thoughts. I'm starting to feel like I should reach for the bigger, more expensive school because money is no longer a barrier.
They are noticeably different in size.
5,000 freshmen v.s. 12,000 freshmen
Midsize v.s. Top 10
200 in a lecture v.s. 500+ in a lecture
Everything within a 20 min walk v.s. 20 minute bus ride
More individualized attention, less competitive, and less abroad/job opportunities v.s. more competitive, less attention, and more opps.
I would be taking a huge risk switching my mind over to a huge univerisity. It will have to work harder and I probably won't make it into the honors college. I will have to get up earlier to catch a bus and I won't have a car my 1st year.
This is a choice between my dream school that I wished to go to v.s. the safe school that will be more comfortable to me.
I'm freaking out about it and need help T_T
What size college did you go to? How far away were you from home? How did you decide where to go??
