the past the asahina family moved to alyster in april 1869 after hatori's father, a former daimyo, was forced to surrender his land to the new emperor, emperor meiji, in return for 1/2 his revenue - which the family used to move halfway across the world with. they settled in a modest cottage in little amsterdam in goldshore, a significant downgrade from the large estate hatori had grown up in back in japan, but its wasn't too difficult a transition since hatori had no trouble charming his way into the hearts of practically the entire town. The reason why they family chose to move to alyster was because one of ingham's reps stationed in japan had caught wind of young hatori - a daimyo's son who was testing higher than any student his age in the region, had a natural gift when it came to firearms, and was the captain of his airship academy's junior crew (the crew that currently held the nation's record for fastest completed fly-around) - and was inviting him to come to ingham airship academy when the news of having to surrender their lands came through and the decision was basically made for them. but hatori didn't mind, he liked the change of scenery and found that his new sheep classmates were even easier to lead win-over than the his old ones.
the one secret hatori unknowingly carries with him is that of his true parentage. the woman who raised him, whom he lovingly refers to as "mother", is not his biological mother. unable to bare children but still wanting to bless her husband with a son, hatori's "mother" had one of her lady's maid's, a captured korean girl, sleep with her husband, hatori's father. she then faked a pregnancy while the servant girl was really the one pregnant and then she took the baby once he was born and passed it off as her own. that half japanese-half korean baby boy was hatori. so as never to risk the secret getting out, hatori's mother had the korean servant girl killed immediately after she'd given birth. everyone else who knew the secret stayed in japan when the family moved to alyster so now, hatori's "mother" is the only one who carries this horrible secret in her heart.

• hatori at anything having to do with art - the only thing even remotely "artistic" that he can do well is japanese calligraphy and that's only because he's been forced to do it since he was big enough to hold the dang brush on his own.
• in his head, hatori refers to everyone else in the crew as "sheep" (often "stupid sheep") since, like sheep, he views them all as desperately needing direction and leadership - two servies he is more than happy to provide them

• hatori picks and chooses his battles wisely, he is very calculated, deciding which face of his to show to whom - the charming and gallent village boy, the studeous and well-behavied son, the wise-auared and persuasive captian, the aloof yet intimidating worse-nighmare. life is one big game to hatori, and he does what he feels is necessary to always hold control.
• he has a soft spot for people with heart-shapped lips/strong cupid bows. since he for some reason finds lips to be the most attractive thing about another person and he feels his own lips are rather...round and plain.
• he's recently started lining his eyes with charcoal and suddle but dramatic difference has begun to turn many heads and earn him second glances from females and males alike
• even though there's too many people in the cramped sunbird as is, hatori still manages to find places to lurk and hide, hearing conversations and seeing things not meant for his eyes or ears - he needs to know the internal going-ons of his ship and crew at all times if he wants to gain and hold control over this airship.

first meeting the first line-up for the ansa sunbird crew when everyone going aboard meets everyone else tbh
interactions tori stares at bastian's lips a lot and always says his name with a little hint of his japanese accent and is more sympathetic/lenient towards sebastian than he is to any other member of the crew. sebastian himself is just generally intimidated by tori and so is oblivious to the fact that tori's lowkey playing favorites with him. they have a lot of long awkward pauses in which they lock eyes and both kind of just freeze for a few moments. tori truthfully just thinks bastian is pretty and wants to taste his lips but realizes that'd be unprofessional/could ruin everything.
relationship status ...its not normal that's for sure.
analysis
keeping this ship in the air and yawls' asses in check - those are captain tori asahina's two main goals for the next two months. he doesn't intend to fail so if this ship ends up going down - you can bet he's not going down with it. (of course there could be character developement and by the time that happens he could actually give a about all of you stupid sheep-- but it's not likely.)
