BACKGROUND
yeoreum was as quiet as she is now. she was a baby that only cried when she had to poop because her stomach was hurting but for everything else, she had her own way of making things known. blinking eyes for sleepy and smacking lips for hungry were just two of the things she had developed. in a way, she was kind of like tommy from rugrats in that she was pretty intelligent for a infant + toddler and as curious as george the monkey. her mother didn't exactly worry about her, because she always felt children had to learn these things on their own and parents could only really surpervise them and make sure they didn't get serverly injured and possibly killed. because of yeoreum's mother's parenting tactics, yeoreum grew up to be a smart kid in experience and street smarts. her book smarts weren't that great but she was eager to learn and please which kept her grades up. perceptive ever since a young age, she's been semi-obsessed with learning about the human mind and reactions to certain words and revelations that she, as a child, would just say a nice or hurtful sentence to get a reaction to write down how that person acts when they're mad, sad, or happy.
she didn't become focused with music until discovering morning musume at age 9. primarily preoccupied with this group that she loves, she started testing out music programs and creating her own that have a similar sound to late 90's, early 2000's morning musume. after a while she started to branch out into different genres, like rock, ska, fusion jazz, hip hop, etc. of course, her favorite would always be pop but she didn't mind the others, even liked listening to them. she liked all types of music, and eventually started singing. she wasn't amazing (and still isn't anything special) but she wasn't tone deaf and that was pretty much enough for her. at 11, she found out about k-pop and it peeked her interest only because it was similar to j-pop but she was able to control more aspects of her career, is what she got from it. after researching accounts from former trainees and workers behind the scenes, she put caution to the wind and told her mother about what she wanted to do. fortunately for yeoreum, her aunt was willing to take her in (as her mother couldn't move because she had a secure job) and in a year, she was shipped off to south korea.

— THE AUDITION
after nine failed auditions from multiple companies, the tenth one that she did for bighit ended up being her final one, coincidentally the number she decided on that she would stop auditioning if she failed again. she was somewhat confused when she heard she had a call back a week later because she couldn't sing or rap or dance (and she wasn't exactly pretty persay especially because she was super young but that never stopped the japanese companies so she put that aside) but didn't think too much about it. they didn't ask her to sing or dance (or rap) again, asking her to bring one of her composed songs. that was essentially what got her into the company and the drawing portfolio she brought just because her aunt told her, too. they told her she'd had to do some serious "and i mean serious" training if she ever wanted to even be considered average but yeoreum only laughed in her head at that because she didn't realize they were being serious.
— THE TRAINING
• lived in dorms with five other girls who didn't talk to her. she slept on a bottom bunk, woke up first, left last because she was so focused on other things like getting the others up and ready. the girls appreciated her helpfulness but were they going to start speaking to her? not after those first three conversations.
• her monthly evaluations were... a mess to say the least. "how is it possible that you're getting worse?" she only ever just nodded with a smile. she still didn't realize they were being serious.
• usually always alone outside of spending time with the stylists who stopped by. they were pretty much the only ones who liked yeoreum's company. she practiced alone, ate lunch alone, went out to go hang with the neighborhood cats alone.
• if she wasn't practicing, she was outside. she'd go for hikes, to a seoul park, han river, hongdae ("what's a 10 year old doing here?" "i'm 15..."), small restaurants with little business, anywhere she could get to with a notebook in her hand. she really liked exploring. even when she had no money, she liked being places. writing down things that she saw, sometimes drawing deformed versions of the animals and plants she saw.
• training should've been difficult for someone who had little talent but it really wasn't for her. yes, she got tired and frustrated but knowing this is what she wanted grounded her, made her feel better. it kept her calm when she felt like giving up, as well as the cats she knew were probably cheering her on. in the end, she knew it would work out. she was pretty hopeful.

— WEB MINISERIES this is on the plot thing, so i want to expand on it. she creates her own little web reality miniseries that usually lasts around 10 to 15 minutes on their official youtube (like eatjin and hope on the street) called katsu natsu because she's not creative when it comes to naming, where there's really not a set theme and she's just doing random things. sometimes she's talking about physiology, witchcraft, or psychology, other times she's taking a random hike after lying about going to the studio, showing the camera crew the cats that hang around an abandoned parking lot of a macy's and hanging out with them, buying ugly pots and stuffing dirt from a park into it, arts and crafts where she shows off her creepy drawings (think of the moon from majora's mask but it's not supposed to be creepy and she thinks it's cute) and makes some easy crafts, making food concotions like scrambled strawberry eggs with cinnamon, syrup, and whipped cream, etc. it ends up showing a new side of her and she quickly gets that 4d and alien personas attached to her, and most fans automatically connect her being boring to her just being 4d.
