sodam is not human.

 

that's what she hears all the time. with how unusual she acts, she either scares people or completely enraptures them. maybe having a gorgeous face helps, but sodam's candid yet strange personality is seen as lovable by many, many people. she's always had friends, even though she's never actively sought them out. people hang on to her every word, which considering how little she actually does say, it makes some sense that her admirers would cling to them. it's all they're really going to get.

 

but sodam doesn't really... do anything. at least not to warrant such an active interest. again, it could be because she's pretty, but people being superficial and shallow does not mean they're going to like just anyone they think is pretty. personality is important in keeping that interest in tact, so what about sodam makes people stick to her?

 

well, for starters, it could be the fact that she does not care. about anything or close to it. when you're dealing with pressure from your family, pressure from your peers, pressure from society, seeing someone who doesn't care about any of that, free from the stress and anxiety and insecurities you're suffering from, it could either make you really, really hate them or really, really admire them.

 

her hobbies and interests, how she talks and walks, the way she lives her life in a simple yet fanciful manner — sodam is a free-spirit through and through. she's not constrained by societal norms and social expectations, and it's obvious upon first meeting. she either finds them to be stupid or not for her, plain and simple. she lives how she wants to live, whether people have issues with it or not.

 

it seems like she has no worries or insecurities, and there's some truth to that. she does still worry about things, but about silly things like the concession stand not having enough ketchup for her corndog. she has little to no fear or cautiousness — she's the person you call when there's a giant bug in the room, to make an order or phone call, or for confrontation. however, she won't partake in reckless activities or do something with severe consequences. she's well aware of the consequences of doing dangerous or illegal activities, and unless she feels like she can 100% get away with it like pirating, she will not do it nor will she be convinced to. going to jail and being injured seems like it'd be really annoying to deal with.

 

although she's not scared of dying, sodam is not a thrill-seeker. because she doesn't normally experience fear, she also doesn't really experience adrenaline aside from doing flips and throwing her body around in dance. which is why she loves breakdancing! it's some of the only times she gets that thrill that everyone else can experience on rollercoasters and whatnot. she is willing to try anything thrice, though, and she goes on solo adventures quite often. she doesn't mind tagging along either, but she'll easily disappear in these group settings. if someone wants to follow, they will — it has no bearing on her life either way.

 

but of course, all of this is just how she seems on the surface because sodam does care. about some things. if she really, truly didn't care she would be a very mean person. however, sodam is quite nice and friendly. it may not be noticeable until a closer relationship is formed and her little habits are able to be identified, but sodam is considerate of other people.

 

offering her seat when an old person walks onto a bus, passing a few bills to a unhoused person, bringing her and her friends' order to the table — sodam is pretty compassionate in the small ways. she'd never do a grand gesture of kindness, but she doesn't need to. she does small kind acts everyday. 

 

sodam finds people who are happy over the little things to be interesting. saying thank you to a convenience store cashier can really make their day. she doesn't really get it, but it's not a bad confusion. she'll continue to help out because being kind makes people less annoying than being mean.

 

when someone's mad or upset, they can be freaking irritating. especially if they're mad at her, because they try so hard to make it her problem when it's theirs. if there's one emotion she can understand perfectly, it's annoyance. she's good at keeping that feeling to herself, as to not offend the other person and make them more mad and irritating. but she can still end up offending people just by being clueless. you can only be so considerate if you know what will upset people or not, and sodam has no idea for the most part.

 

a simple question of "why would you do that?" can really get people going. but all she did was ask a question because she was confused on their thought process. she wasn't being sarcastic or anything, she was genuinely asking. sodam doesn't understand the point of sarcasm aside from like maybe jokes (but even then, she doesn't really laugh) so why would she use it? but there's no point in explaining herself — some people just want to be upset, so she'll let them get their grievances out before moving on with the conversation.

 

and move on she does, which can end up upsetting a sensitive person even more. especially considering the way sodam talks is very unspecific. she's always vague in her answers, or her words, or even just the way that she lives. if asked to explain something she's said or done, she will give a more ambiguous answer or just simply say nothing at all.

the reason? she doesn't like explaining herself or talking for too long. why waste time say lot word when few do trick? and she figures people don't care about explanations, even if they do ask her. it's more of a formality thing. humans are weird like that. they ask things they don't care to know, do things they don't actually want to do, and say things they don't actually mean.

 

and if you were to point out that sodam does the same thing by being nice for niceness' sake, she would have to disagree. she's nice because humans are easier to deal with when they're happy. and if you were to point out that other people think the same way she does and that's why they do things they don't want to do, she would still have her doubts.

 

 

 

it's hard for sodam to change her mind on something she's so convinced about. if she changes her mind, that means she was wrong, and she'd rather die than be wrong. even if someone were to tell her that being wrong is not the end of the world and that it's impossible for her to know everything, she would close her eyes and refuse to listen. it's better to be a know-it-all than a stupid idiot.

 

and even if someone were to tell her that changing her mind does not necessarily mean that she was wrong about anything, she would once again refuse to listen.

 

if that were true, why would you need to change your mind in the first place?

 

this stubborness is quite funny considering how she's pretty open-minded. well, except to the idea of being wrong. she's curious about the world, so she does a lot of studying and research, as well as making friends with people from different walks of life. she can be a bit nosy because of it, but she knows when to pull back, when the person she's asking millions of questions to stops replying in a way she likes. she wants to learn everything she can; she wants to know everything. so she's right in her assessment that this world .

 

really, it doesn't count as her being wrong if she's only thought about something or she never knew about it in the first place. if she hasn't spoken it out into the universe, that means she hasn't made a direct statement yet. which is why she obsessively checks her phone before she refutes misinformation, even if she knows it's misinformation.

 

what if she ends up saying something wrong trying to correct someone else's wrong information!? and now everyone's spreading this wrong information before it finally comes to someone who actually knows the real information, and now everyone thinks she's stupid like them.

 

that just can't happen.

 

for someone with supposedly no worries, she worries a lot about looking stupid. probably because she's always calling people stupid in her head and it would be strange for her to also be stupid. or maybe because she's convinced herself that she's better than the average person. that she shouldn't be here in this ed up world with idiotic people. she doesn't deserve this flesh prison in this hell dimension.

 

she's better than all this.

 

the only way she can escape the hell of the physical world is through her mind. and boy does she escape! a real daydreamer, she doesn't even have to be still or alone to do it. her immersion is intense, and she feels like she's actually there. this can end up being a problem, especially if she's near someone or in a converstion with them.

 

sodam will reply out loud to what's being said in her daydream, completely throwing off whoever she's with. she knows she shouldn't daydream while around other people — already dealing with the repercussions of that long ago — but it's hard not to when it's her no.1 happy place. it's exciting and fun, which are some emotions she doesn't feel as often outside of her happy places. she's always so bored, just let her have fun!

 

sodam's childlike qualities are easier to spot for people who know her for long. she has an air of innocence about her. going back to her cluelessness, she's naive. she believes almost everything anybody tells her, and she only distrusts whatever goes against her beliefs. because why would anyone lie to her face? she knows why people lie online and through media, but to her face? she just doesn't get it.

 

sodam also loves to play around. she can get serious, but she doesn't usually want to. again, the only happiness she gets to have is through her happy places, and one of those places is playing in her head and in real life. she likes messing with people, though only those she's close to. she tried playing what she thought was a harmless prank on someone she barely knew and they got mad because she wasn't taking their group project seriously.

 

she thinks people like that should lighten up. plus, she's a hard worker when she doesn't have to be. it's not like she's competitive or a perfectionist; she wouldn't care about not doing so great. she could get away with the bare minimum. she only doesn't do the minimum because she wants to see how hard she can push herself and what she can accomplish by doing her best. she thinks she deserves some me-time for not going the lazy route. and if that me-time coincides with someone's boring monologue, well that's their problem. they should've been more interesting.

 

like her.

 

she's plenty interesting. well, that's what she's heard. for the most part, she's seen as oddly endearing and quirky. but sometimes, her quirkness can venture into creepiness. her love for porcelain dolls, staring into people's eyes without blinking or never looking into their eyes and always scanning the room, rarely showing any emotions, trailing off or abruptly stopping her sentences, smiling and laughing at the wrong times, repeating what people say right after they say it or mouthing their words as they're talking, remembering everything about someone — these are just a few examples of many.

 

and so we go back to the beginning, with the statement that sodam is not a human. but sodam doesn't want to be a human being if it means she has to act like everyone else. maybe she's "weird", maybe she's "unique"... it doesn't really matter anyway.

sodam's best friend. they met in junior high, and sodam 2 (sohee) began talking to her because they have the same name. they were dami and soi — dami, the calm one, and soi, the fiesty one. after the soda nickname was born, soda came up with sohee for her friend. now, they're soda and sohee, but their personalities are still the exact same.

 

sohee is the butter to soda's bread, the peanut to her jelly. that's what sohee says; soda is inclined to agree. sohee is the more outgoing one, so she was always bringing soda out and about and including her into things. she also talks A LOT and she doesn't mind being the only one speaking, which means soda doesn't have to respond.

 

sohee likes soda because she's strange yet pure. she always makes her laugh hard and she finds it hard to be annoyed by her when she seems so innocent. soda is a breath of fresh air to sohee.

 

soda feels the same way. sohee's fiery energy is always exciting and even when she says something dumb, it's not as annoying as other people because she's so funny. she's good at turning her mistakes into a laughable moment. 

 

despite her stupidity, she's good in social situations, which is why she has so many friends. the one person soda actually listens to is sohee. maybe because they have the same name...

 

if sohee tells her something is a bad idea, she'll consider it. she'll listen to her if she (soda) didn't directly state she would do it. as much as she listens to her, sohee won't make her change her mind.

 

they talk to each other everyday. they're used to not meeting up with each other for long periods of time since soda became a neet, so it wasn't a problem for these two besties when soda got busy with training. soda tells her everything that happens to her and vice versa.

 

sohee is soda's biggest fan. she's very supportive of her journey in becoming an idol and she can't wait to see her on stage. she'll definitely be there for her debut stage. she's also encouraging soda to grab hanoong's heart despite soda telling her friend she doesn't think of him in that way.

through adventures, volunteer work, and her proximity to the extroverted sohee, sodam has met many people and subsequently became their friends. it's not uncommon for sodam to be stopped on the street by someone she knows or used to talk to. age and gender doesn't really matter, either, though it is usually women close to her age. she comes off as more outgoing because of it and it's possible that she is, deep down inside. she's not that close to anybody other than sohee, but she doesn't feel like they're superficial friend-ships. she wouldn't have friends for the sake of having friends. that sounds dumb.

sodam's bandmate. there's really not much to say about their relationship. they're similar in that they're both annoying hipsters with an ego to big to swallow, but the things they like are widely different and the way they go about is a lot different.

 

where somang has a hatred for all things pop culture, sodam doesn't care. it's not that it's bad, it's not that it's popular — it's just the things she likes are rarely popular. 

 

sodam is not that interested in somang but seeing as they're debuting together, she figures she should be extra kind to her younger bandmate.

she honestly doesn't remember much after she passes out. she hears afterwards that the kind hanoong had called the ambulance for her and made sure she wasn't dead. most people would feel embarrassed about smacking so hard into a wall that they get a concussion and pass out and although they wake up for a short bit, which they don't remember, they ultimately fall asleep because they were awake for almost 20 hours before that due to a severe case of daydreaming about circus rabbits, all right in front of their idol.

 

sodam saw this as a chance for an actual conversation. she decided to thank him the next time she ran into him coincidentally, but the next time she saw him was not a coincidence — he actually came looking for her himself. he wanted to know if she was okay. mid air splits were her answer to his concern. that made him more concerned, especially since she's supposed to be recovering from a concussion. she's scolded a bit, which she could only giggle at.

 

 

 

the next time they unexpectedly met, the first thing sodam said was, "what made you smile today?" she was meant to ease into it, but... she couldn't get the sentence to stop repeating in her brain since yesterday. she remembered to actually greet him a few moments after.

 

awkward won that day. she got him to laugh. although she thinks it was genuine, she wouldn't be able to identify it either way, so she chooses to believe he laughed for real. a new dynamic opened up for the two: sodam asking him a generic conversation starter and hanoong answering before they go their separate ways. some days, he would beat her to asking a question, and she'd confuse, yet intrigue him with her weirdly mysterious answers.

 

two months before debut, sodam asked for his contact information. she actually never thought about asking for it, the idea nowhere near her mind, until sohee mentioned it. luckily, they're acquainted enough that he wasn't weirded out by her asking. although he told her she could come to him with any concerms or questions she has or if she just needs someone to talk to because being an idol can be really stressful, the most she does is send him cute inspirational quotes and the good morning, good night graphics that are popular with gen x and up parents. hanoong seems to like the quotes and images, and he always makes sure to reply back to her even if it takes long.

 

sure, he's being nice because that's just the way he is plus he's her senior, but recently he texted good morning first so she thinks she's making progress. she'll take as long as she needs to accomplish her goal of a duet with him. she has no game plan and she's going by ear, but small steps forward are still steps forward.

01. hanoong is saved under sodam's phone as "senior kim hanoong". sodam is saved as "park sodam (arthouse)". funnily enough, this does not change in the progression of their relationship.
