Overthinking and why I'm finding it works. Sometimes.
Ok, so a lot of you are noticing that little dog walking around the screen, especially if you're typing. Now, some of you are liking it, some of you just find it annoying. I'm suspicious of it. And I might be the only one. Why? Because:
1) It appears on some pages, but not others. For example, it is right at the top of this blog post editor, but it won't be on the blog page once I publish it because it doesn't appear there. It will be on the blog archive, the home page, and others.
2) He appears in the private messages pages. Why would it appear there?
3) There seems to be no reason whatsoever for the dog to be there. That, by the way, is my number one reason to be suspicious of it.
See, because there is no reason for the dog to be there, and there has been no announcement made as yet by the AFF admin team as to why the dog is there, I have to err on the side of caution. Because:
A) What if this dog is not from the AFF team but was actually injected into a file to log what you're typing? It responds to keys being pressed. And it's in your private message pages. Why would such a thing appear on your private message pages?
B) What if the dog is a virus? I mean, AFF is prone to some attacks from other places, what's to say this isn't another one? Only instead of going after the server, they're going after the users? Again, the fact that there hasn't been a post somewhere saying "Oh hi, we've just added this dog to our page, isn't he cute?" is rustling my jimmies. Because there is no explanation as to why he's there. Also, for anyone that wants to check out the AFF code, the dog is in a thing with an ID of "evangelist". Which is also getting my heckles up.
Of course, it might just be some innocuous game because it's April, like how Google turned the entire Google Maps website into a giant Pacman game for one of its many April Fools features last year. Or how they added Breakout into Google Images (open Google Images and search for "atari breakout" and you can play it in Google Images. Just turn the speakers down first.) Or how they added snake into the YouTube video player. (I forget how to start that though.) Or the "do a barrel roll" Google Search term. (Google "do a barrel roll".) It's entirely possible that this dog could be nothing. But since we don't have any confirmation from the site admin as to what it is, and since it's in the private messages pages too, I'm going to remain cautious and suspicious of it, thank you very much.
UPDATE FOR ANYONE THAT READS THIS NOW!!
According to Nichiren, the site's creator, the dog is just an April Fools thing. So ... yeah, I was wrong. And really wrong. Sorry, guys.
