Am I a good author?

This isn't so much a "Please tell me how great I am" post or a "Why aren't people giving me feedback? My stories are so empty" post as a genuine question.

Do you think I'm a good author, and why do you think that?

There's a little backstory to go with this: last year, my boss passed away from cancer. She was a dear friend and whilst her passing was expected, it still hurt.  Recently, her mother contacted me and asked me to contribute a piece for a book about her life.  She would edit it as appropriate and have it published.  So I wrote a couple of pages and sent it to her for a proofread.  It was very much a rough draft, unedited, unrestrained, "au-naturel" I believe the term is.  Her feedback was basically "I should have asked you to write more.  In fact, I should have asked you to write the whole thing.  I can't see anything that I would want to change right now."

Given that she's a former University lecturer in English and she's saying that I have incredible talents, I don't think I'm a bad writer, really.

But that's just it.  I'm not a bad writer.  A huge portion of my career depends on me being a good writer, on taking abstract ideas, facts and statistics and forming constructs that can be presented and placed in articles or reports or stuff like that, so I can't be a bad writer.  But what about as an author?  What do you guys think of my abilities there?  Do you think that what I feel and see comes through well in text?  Do you guys see the ideas that I want to convey?  Do you feel the emotions of the characters, even if you hate the characters in the first place?  Do you understand the story even if the plot is really thin?

And this isn't me joining the whole "Leave comments on authors stories kthxbai" thing. I have very strong feelings on that whole "Down with silent readers, throw all silent readers into the molten bowels of Mount Doom where they shall be tortured with fire, fury and whiney protest songs from the 1960s" movement.  I don't get that steaming pile of bovine manure at all, but this isn't about that.  I genuinely would like to know what people think of me as an author.  Personally, I'm confident in my abilities as a writer in general, but as readers, what do you guys think of me as an author?  What do you think of my work?  Add something here, add something to the stories themselves, whatever you wish.  Or don't.  It's entirely up to you.  I just thought I'd ask now and see what people would say in response.
