KDrama/Webtoons Cliche Bank

After writing my rather brain barftastic review of Maru's Pinocchio, I wanted to create a list of Cliche Conflicts you see in KDramas, Webtoons, or other K-fiction... Why? Because I like thinking about this things, and pretend I have worked out the psychosis of society... Would you care to join me?

Rich Jerkface CEO everywhere! - it's not just K-fiction... I mean for some reason most Asian dramas like their leading men impossibly rich. Because, you know, why not? Even the Big Bad West is sometimes like that... like you know, Christian Grey. Not saying it's bad or anything. I mean I'd marry a big bag of money too if it keeps trying to get into my pants/bank. I mean, I'd marry Bruce Wayne too... because you know, I want my family car to be a sleak, military grade, monster machine... I mean, hey, if you're fantasizing, why not? right? Who's your favourite CEO/ or some other extremely, impossibly rich K-fiction guy? Me?... Uh... well, let's just say Ji Sung Il (Ryu Jin in Baby Faced Beauty). Was he a mean spirited ? Well, he was because you know, money makes rich, spoiled bastards who need some relatively poor to middle class girl to humble them or something? I mean, Rich Jerkface CEO/son of CEO/President of some internationally dominating company, why are they always jerks? In real life, would you date someone who seem to keep their overly stuffed wallets up their or what? I mean, I like Ryu Jin because he was the more mature character in that show and though he was a mean spirited boss, his abusive tendencies were mostly reactions to workplace habits... so I give him at least that. But I am not saying I am completely un-charmed by bad behaviour. I say I am less inclined to though... And I am really, really squinting my eyes at overly rich/successful male leads that are holy a dime a dozen in fiction. Order me some Multibillionaire hottie in a to-go bag, juseyo. Hold the jerk sauce... I usually just go with ketchup.

Poor Heroine with medium to low intellectual capabilities - I mean, I don't know. I mean, even the smart Hong Sul in Cheese in the Trap plays the second flute to her male counterparts phenomenal, ultra-fancy smarty pants. I can't recall a female character who is like holy the next Marie Curie while we have so many male leads who can speak half decent English and declared as the next Einstein in international business... or another field. I am not crying ist, but you know, I mean, you know this right? Where was the last super smart, jerkface female CEO you saw? I honestly don't know any of those...

y Self Centred Female Villainess - the second girl is always a who has no life. I mean, I have lived through high school, and I do know there is a realistic female clique clash, but you know, how it's portrayed in fiction over and over how women fight over boys like they are the salvation from your , is overplayed and tired... and why are over popular girls with secret jealous complex such a reoccuring trope. I mean, you know that the overpopular kids, they do have self-esteem and good interpersonal skills... just because you aren't one doesn't make them the horrible you wish they are... /shrugs

Bullying - the first time I actually really liked a webtoon (Cheese in the Trap), the escaltion from you know, the generic female-to-feamle nastiness to male-to-female stalking was such a shock to me. Is it this bad in Korea? I mean, it's not even just K-fiction, shoujo has so much maltreated heroine's you'd be surprised at a girl who never had to fend off other women from pouring thumb tacks in their indoor shoes. But K-fiction sometimes take it to some extremes... I don't know. I mean, I have some experience with bullying, but nothing as horrific that I would want to kill myself. I am not saying this doesn't exist or anything, but because it's so commonplace in fiction, one just kind of wonder how bad the situation is...

I think I am done with this post because... you know, I should try out life, or something...

I guess it's mainly because SK or Korea in general no matter how technologically advanced they are they still have this very patriarchal society. That a girl's best charm is a pretty face, a slender body and a constant need for saving. Even their laws are not particularly pro-women. Single moms have a huge stigma in Korean society that most unmarried mothers would rather give up their kids for adoption rather than to be ostracized by their family & friends. A woman can lose her job in the same grounds. I know it's not just in SK I mean at some point there was the same kind of mindset back in the day in the Philippines and other conservative Asian countries however the fact that people hadn't moved on from that kind of thinking is just sad. The moral obligation almost always falls in the woman's hands and guys can pretty much do whatever they want. Adultery is even legal now. I wish those only exist in kdramas but apparently the same stuff happen in real life.
