My DREAMS are crushed and I feel like crying T_T

For a quick second I thought I had it all planned out. I was going to major in Communication, minor in Business, and then work in the publishing, marketing, journalism or broadcasting field.

But now my dreams are crushed... (T_T)

A spokesperson from a "career" college came to my school today and "educated" us on the employable degrees. They were STEM, Education, Medical, and Business. No where on the list did I see Liberal Arts. Not even social work!! He even used my degree as a joke (along with political science & Psychology) to point out that broad degrees are a dead end. "What kind of job can you get with an Accounting degree? You become an accountant. What kind of degree can you get with a Communication degree. You become a communicator?"

It's hard for me to get any solid answers on this major. Those who majored in it and are doing well (I've personally met some) say it's great because it's versatile. But those who didn't say it's useless. Who do I believe?? And the last thing I want to do is spend $50,000+ on a college degree and take out loans, but can't find a job after I graduate.

So now I'm left with a tough choice that almost brought tears to my eyes. Do I give up on the Liberal Arts and pursue Technology? I could do business like the man said today but it's still looked down upon and seen as useless. (I don't want my major to be laughed at when I get to university.) But I hate math and science. I am more of the creative type. It has nothing to do with me taking the easy way out as some say.

The truth is I know exactly what I want to do, but it's in such "low demand" is it even worth it??

*sigh* Maybe I'll just be a teacher and write blogs or books on the side. It's respectable and employable. That's better than being overloaded with boring lab classes.

It's really just a matter of how good you are at what you do. I was a fine arts major, I ended up teaching but I still did what I loved. As a communications major in this technology & media heavy age there are massive opportunities traditional radio, broadcast journalism, techy stuff that I don't get. Lol you can always pick up a business or education minor if you're afraid the market won't support your path come graduation. Ignore those that poke fun. We all know PE majors are the lost causes j/k

I know what it's like to have your dreams crushed when I was in high school. I wanted to be a vet but my grades weren't high enough but I'm sure you'll find a way to do what you love. Good luck ^_^

people who didn't major in those areas say they're useless while those who did say they're not... if someone didn't major in communications, then of course they would think they're useless... but whether or not they're "useless" is up to you to interpret and I hope you won't let others sway you...
yes there's logic behind what they might say, but honestly, there's no telling what will happen in life... you could go to Harvard or whatever ivy league school and major in law, but there's never a guarantee you'll find a job... yes your chances of finding a job are higher, but your college and your major aren't the only things that matter in your life and there's other factors as well
if you hate math and science, don't major in anything related to that because this might happen in the long run: yes you major in something "more useful", yes you graduate and yes you might find a job, but what's the point if the job is something you hate? you'll have to stay with that job for a while and you'll hate it and I wouldn't want to live like that... I would prefer doing something I like than doing something I hate, even if it has higher pay or more job opportunities or whatever else people say it has
it's up to you... but please remember to do what you think will make you happy in the long run, not what other people think... good luck XD

aww everyone said the same about history too, and here I am in my first year of university studying history. Yeah there's a big chance I might not find a job in the history field but hey, there are other jobs too! Right now I am just doing what I like and I will see what happens in three years. Lol I might sound like a real carefree person now.... Maybe I am. But I still think one should do what he or she likes. University time is supposed to be the best of your life and when you're doing something you don't fully believe in... no, just do what you want!

don't let them jerks tell you what you can and cannot do with your degree. if you have the power to make your dream come true, don't let others stop you from it. I used to think that the major that i wanted to do (graphic design) didn't make much money at all and was totally a big 50/50 chance at a loss, but why let others tell you to choose or not to choose. They're not living my life, I am. Com is really broad and you can take your degree almost anywhere and it's also associating with business like Human resources etc.
Pretty sure we are all mature once we transition from hs to uni. i know a few com majors in my uni and they're happy, even happier than me and i feel a bit envy because they don't give a on what others think and love what they do.
embrace your creativity because that's how some of us are. everyone's different and i hope you enjoy uni because it's either going to be the best four years of your life or the worst.
