To be Honest

By Aderation

Sungyeol looked at the boy who treats his leg as pillow, lying on the sofa peacefully.

“Hey, Myungsoo. I got something to tell you.” Sungyeol said while caressing the others hair casually.

“Go ahead.” Came Myungsoo’s muffled voice.

“Do you remember that?”

“Ouch, it hurts.” Myungsoo grunted while sitting up straight. Every move caused great pain of his leg, sending a warning to his brain. He whined at the pain. He stopped abruptly when he saw his leg.  The skin was pounded into his skin as if scorched. The bruises were a multitude of hues, colors that normally should not be on someone’s skin. There were garish purple splotches, roughly the size of a fist, while others were more grayish, but still looked just as bad. And they were all over his right knee. It was horrible.
Myungsoo couldn’t open his mouth at the terrible sight. He wondered when and how he got such a severe injury. The following few days were a nightmare, moving was already torture. What made the situation worse was the fact that he was an idol, the dance practices they had daily were just unbearable. The pain caught him at every moment, the pain when dancing was as if a person stabbed a knife on his knee.

“Myungsoo-a, how are you?” Sungyeol looked at him in concern, seeing cold sweat dripping down his forehead.

“I didn’t know how I get it.” Myungsoo responded between breaths, while pulling up his pants to show the terrible sight.

Sungyeol looked at the bruise pitifully, “maybe you have overworked yourself. Be careful, you clumsy kid.”

“Myungsoo-a, to be honest, it was me who bruised you.” Sungyeol confessed, which resulted in receiving a cold glance from the younger.

“I am really sorry about that.” Sungyeol continued. “It was at the mid-night. I couldn’t get asleep that night, and planned to get some comic books from your bookshelf. However, an accident occurred, the books all fell onto you, mainly your right knee. Such a deep sleeper, you didn’t even move. Sorry that I only confess today. How about you?”

“I also get something that I feel really sorry.” Myungsoo replied.

What greet Sungyeol when he went back home after work were shattered pieces of china on the floor. His vase had been ruthlessly divided into numerous parts, lying on the floor waiting its owner arrival.

“KIM MYUNGSOO.” Sungyeol shouted at his top of his lung.

And a man in all black came out from a room lazily. Sungyeol looked at the person, Kim Myungsoo, who shared a same house with him. And sighed helplessly.

“Myungsoo-a. Please, I know you are clumsy, but, can you at least tidy up the damages you make?” The angry sound was nowhere to be found, instead it was a pleading, a beg.

“What?” Myungsoo blinked his eyes few times, he was perplexed.

Sungyeol looked at him, speechless, and pointed at the pieces of china, which lied on the floor lifelessly.

“No, I didn’t break it!” Hearing the denial, Sungyeol looked at the younger, rage was boiling in his stomach.

“Then tell me. Who did it?” He tried his best to remain calm in front of Myungsoo, shouting at him won’t help anything.  He might have end up being beaten, according to his past experience.

“The cat!” Myungsoo stared into the older’s eyes, an intense eyes staring competition had started silently.

“What? The cat? Where the the cat comes from?” Sungyeol broke the eye contact.

“My friend just came to the house to play, they brought a cat with them.” Sungyeol looked at Myungsoo’s eyes, they were big as eggs, and sighed inwardly. Seemed like he need to the housework today.

“Er… To be honest, I lied. I broke the vase in accident, the cat didn’t exist” Myungsoo stammered, he wasn’t still get used to the fact the he was revealing his crime.

“I knew it!” a conceited smile was hanging on Sungyeol’s face, “I knew it, you cat.”

And they laughed together.

“Ok, so it’s my turn now.”

Myungsoo looked at the glass jar which he kept his money in it, eyebrows furrowed. He couldn’t explain the strange phenomenon happening on him. No matter how many coins he put in it, the jar is never full. He had been saving it for three years, but the day when he could seal it never came.

“Weird.” Myungsoo muttered while looking at the jar blankly. He couldn’t conclude a reasonable reason. It was as if the jar had infinite volume, the more coins there was, the bigger the capacity.

Money being stole? That was impossible, none of s knew the existence of this jar, it was a secret. He kept it under his clothes in the closet, even his closest friend Sungyeol didn’t know about it.

“Hey, Myungsoo where are you? We must leave in 20 minutes for the next schedule.” The manager’s voice broke Myungsoo from thought. Myungsoo sighed, and hid his glass jar safely.

Seemed like it will be added to the world’s top ten bizarre phenomenons, Myungsoo got up from his seat and got dress.

“Myungsoo, to be honest, I stole the money.” Sungyeol said timidly, knowing the consequence won’t be a light one.

A punch.

“I can’t believe you steal my money.” Myungsoo said, “how did you know about it?”

“I was about to push through the door when I saw holding the glass jar. I peeked through the door and saw you put the jar back to the closet. And from that day, I stole money as  I am too lazy to take money from the atm.” Sungyeol winked.

“Seem like I need to be more caution.”

“Your turn.”

“Do you remember that day?”

“Who the took my favourite jacket?” Sungyeol’s shout could be heard ten miles away.  He searched the whole closet over and over again franticly, but his effort was in vain. Shirts, shorts, trousers, jackets were all scattered across the room messily. Sungyeol swam in the pool of clothes, desperately looking for the specific black jacket.

The jacket was not an extremely expensive one, but it was the jacket Myungsoo bought him as his birthday gift during their trainee period. It represents the precious friendship between them. He couldn’t lose it. Sungyeol looked at the messy room again, annoyance was rising.

And so he stormed out the room, venting his rage to the innocent maknae who was playing computer happily in his room.

“Ya, Lee Sungjong. Did you take my jacket?”

“No, no. I didn’t, hyung.” Sungjong was scared by the older, he could see fire was burning in his eyes, piercing through the poor maknae.

“Mind yourself if I find you lying.” Sungyeol spat and left the room with a bang.

The younger looked at the door which was creaking dangerously from the violence, and shivered. He had never seen his hyung that angry.

“You took my jacket?” Sungyeol said.

“Yes, to be honest, I took it. I was skimming through your closet and that jacket caught my eyes. So I took it, thinking you wouldn’t mind.”

“God, you don’t remember you bought for me?”

“I remember, but that doesn’t matter. I was actually quite sorry for Sungjong. Our poor maknae, bullied by our Sungyeol not knowing what was happening. I had overheard everything, but seeing you that angry, I dared not to risk my life.”

“Pffft.”

“So, your turn.”

Sungyeol smiled, “Mmmm…. To be honest, I love you.”

“I love you too.”

And they smiled knowingly.

To be Honest

‘To be honest, I really regret debuting as Infinite.’

Silence.

The lacking of voice in the room seemed to have depressed the people inside it. The stiffness in the air reverberated around the room and bounced off the walls in stillness.

No one talked. The exhaling and inhaling of breath was evidently audible in the enclosed place. Not a soul dared to move, the air was getting thicker and thicker as the solemn atmosphere started to wriggle its way into everyone's mind.

A person's breath was ominously shallow, in contrast with the others. The absence of noise was pressing him and the tension was too overwhelming. He could feel the suffocating pressure wafting from the silence, and from the looks of the other members, even though they were vexing very hard not to eye him.

He started this mess; he knew it. Sighing, he pulled himself up from his sitting position and decided—perhaps—to clarify himself. He hesitated, waited for a second to clear his mind, and opened his mouth, but nothing was voiced out.

Everyone looked at him in unison, and he thought he hasn’t imagined the disappointment flickering across their leader’s face. Hanging in his hand in shame, he could only make out a few incoherent words and splutters of 'Sorry's, before breaking his voice into sobs.

Sung Yeol regretted his words immediately.

Before he was able to apologize, Myung Soo already stood up with a clearly hurt expression.

The sudden breakdown of Sung Yeol should have made Myung Soo worry, but yet, he was sitting still, body stiffened, seemingly oblivious to the sobs Sung Yeol gave.

Sung Gyu was the first one to react. Almost jumping up, he made way through the motionless members, passed Myung Soo, and held the tall choding  in his arms. Then, one by one, all the other members went to comfort Sung Yeol.

  Except Myung Soo.

He saw Howon eyeing him and tried to indicate something. Perhaps he was telling him to come over to see how Sung Yeol was doing. But Myung Soo didn't care. He mouthed towards Howon, ' If he really wanted to abandon s, then go on. It's none of my business anyway.’

He brushed away the bitterness in his heart. Those scars that were inflicted by Sung Yeol’s uncaring words, and those bruises that could never been mended.

He went into his room without a word.

‘What do you mean by, regretting your choice?’ Myung Soo stared at the panic-stricken boy in front of him.

‘I...I don't...I am not thinking like that....’ Sung Yeol stammered.

  ‘Hey.’

Myung Soo peeked from his blanket and looked up. The face of Sung Yeol occupied most of his sight.  Myung Soo tucked his head into his blanket silently again, not willing to look at Sung Yeol in any ways.

‘Hey...'  Sung Yeol's voice grew weaker and weaker. 'Myung-ah, listen to me. Please.’

‘Why do I have to?’ After a short silence, Myung Soo answered.

‘I didn't mean that...I mean, the to be honest part. I didn't regret my choice. Not at all. You know I was just joking, right?’

‘...That's not a good way to joke.’

‘I am sorry, Myung Soo. I know it is not , but the words just come out and...’

  ‘It hurts, Yeollie. It hurts...’

Myung Soo whimpered. Sung Yeol slowly pulled off his blanket. This time Myung Soo didn't protest, but his eyes were full of tears, threatening to fall.

‘What—Myung Soo, why are you crying? What happened? Are you all right?’ Sung Yeol scurried forward, but Myung Soo simply brushed off his hand.

‘I didn't make you cry, did I? It was just a prank.  I didn't mean any harm,’ Sung Yeol blurted out before realizing that he had spoken a secret.

‘What...A prank?'  Confusion was reflected in his melancholy eyes.

‘Um, Sung Gyu hyung created the prank. He said I have to choose one person to mess with. You are so easy to trick so I chose you....’ Sung Yeol said with his head hung in shame. ‘I am sorry...’

‘So... everything was a prank? Even the crying part?’

‘Well,’ Sung Yeol could hardly hide his embarrassment. ‘I thought you are really angry at me so yeah...I guess I teared up a bit.’

Myung Soo sank into a fit of abrupt laughter. Sung Yeol fixed a confused gaze upon him. ‘Wh--what is going on?’

It took a few more seconds for the laughter to die. Catching his breath, Myung Soo looked at Sung Yeol with a big smile etched upon his face, completely contrasting to the previous expression.

‘Yeollie!' He threw his arms around his shoulders. 'I was pranking you as well! To be honest, I had a bet with Sung Gyu hyung. He told me to pretend to be sad to prank one of the members. I thought I was a hidden camera act or something so I chose you because you are my best friend. I can't believe you actually fell for the prank!’

‘Well, I guess I am an easy target as well...' Sung Yeol scratched his head. 'Is it true that Sung Gyu hyung started up all these mess? ’

‘Yes. But I don't think he would have guessed that we chose each other as targets!' Myung Soo grinned. 'It was quite fun actually, isn't it?’

‘Quite an extraordinary experience,'  Sung Yeol replied with a shrug. 'But to be honest, I don't think I would want to try this again!’

‘Indeed. This has caused us so much trouble,' Myung Soo responded.

‘A trouble to understand each other more,'Sung Yeol smiled.  'At least I have learnt that you are a great actor.’

‘And I have learnt that you are an easy target to trick.’

Both of them burst into laughters.
