Through Fire and Water

As the cold water made contact with my skin, I had a hard time keeping my eyes open to look for the girl, and the faint light from the moon doesn’t help at all. Alert on the surroundings, I swim deeper and deeper until I spot an unconscious Moon Byulyi meters below me.

With all the chasing that I did before jumping into the water, I know I don’t have much time before I run out of breath, but I did my best to swim fast, despite the gash I obtained from my fall earlier, and successfully grabbed the girl by her waist, not wanting to lose sight of her again. Without much energy left, I look up to find that I was way too deep in the water to be able to go up the surface on time.

My eyelids were getting heavier and I was so close to losing air, but before I completely lose consciousness, a figure appeared on time to save us.

It was Taehyung. He caught me by the waist on one hand, while securing Moon Byulyi on the other. Immediately, he enclosed the three of us in a water bubble that quickly brought us to the surface.

Once out of the water, Taehyung hurriedly carried Moon Byulyi to Seokjin, who was already there along with the other student council members, leaving me seated on the ground near the edge of the lake, still coughing and gasping for air. I see that Wu Yifan, another student council member, used his flying abilities to bring Moon Byulyi to the hospital faster. Soon after, Kim Seokjin and the others started heading towards the hospital, too.

With drenched clothes, I stood up, almost falling back down due to my wobbly legs, and followed them before I get left behind, but my still bleeding leg was making it harder for me to catch up. Also, the night breeze was absolutely freezing my soaked self and I couldn’t help but shiver.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed Taehyung’s jacket on the ground, which he probably removed before he jumped into the water. So I leaned down to pick it up when I heard footsteps. I looked up to find a fuming Kim Taehyung  in front of me.

I quickly straightened up and tried telling him that I was definitely not planning on burning his jacket and shredding it to pieces, when the sharp tone of his voice shut me up immediately.

“What were you even thinking, jumping into the water alone?!"

"Hey, I just did what I could---"

"Are you always this stupid? You should have waited for me!"

I see how his eyes were definitely burning holes on my head and I can't help but feel hurt because just when I actually felt like I did something useful for once, I get scolded for being too rash.

Too tired and cold to properly fight back, I couldn’t help but look down at my wet shoes and just say, “But at least Moon Byulyi is found now, that's what matters, right?"

Still looking down and remembering the jacket, I extend my hand that was holding it. “Here, your jacket," urging him to get it.

When I feel that he wasn’t responding, I thought Taehyung already left but when I finally look back up, I catch the said boy observing me from head to toe, this time with his eyes softer.

“Where did you get that?” questioned Taehyung, pointing at the gash on my leg.

From the tone of his voice, it seemed like he thought I was attacked by Moon Byulyi’s kidnapper. Looking at my throbbing leg, I realized that the gash seems deeper than I thought.

“I--- I fell while chasing after the kidnapper.” I confessed.

As I started to feel uncomfortable under his gaze, Taehyung, all of a sudden, grabbed the jacket from my hand and carefully draped it over my shoulders.

“Stupid girl.”

Giving me no time to react from the sudden kind gesture, he then squatted with his back facing me, as if waiting for me to piggyback him.

“Get on before I change my mind.”

It was a silent and long walk to the academy’s hospital. Beneath me, I could feel Taehyung shivering from the coldness of the night. It made me somehow guilty that I was the one wearing his jacket. The action from Taehyung utterly confused me and reminded me of what Kim Namjoon said about the boy.

Taehyung is actually nice, just complicated.

The night was already deep, and I was really tired but I wouldn’t dare sleep on Kim Taehyung’s back. It seems like it’s already in my nature to always be on my toes whenever Taehyung is around. I also find it uncomfortable to be seen this close with him because of his fan girls. People will talk, and I’ve obviously had enough of that.

Fortunately, after everyone was informed that Moon Byulyi was already found, everyone went back to their dorms.

Finally arriving at the hospital’s lobby, we were met with Jung Hoseok, who was busy discussing matters with Wu Yifan.

“From what I heard, a lot of her noblesse energy had been drained off of her. Whoever the culprit was, he was definitely trying to keep Moon Byulyi’s abilities for himself," explained Yifan.

“I see,” Hoseok replied, before turning his head to see us entering the lobby.

Reading his thoughts, Taehyung already satisfied the latter’s curiosity before Hoseok even gets to ask. “Park Jimin.”

Noticing the blood dripping from my leg, Hoseok’s eyes widened and immediately informed us of Jimin’s whereabouts. “Upstairs, last room on the left. He’s tending to Moon Byulyi along with some doctors. A few teachers and the student council members are also there.”

Arriving at the second floor, I feel Taehyung’s tired arms and say, “Taehyung, put me down now.”

Reluctantly, he complied. “Fine, you were heavy anyway.”

Settling myself on a nearby chair, I scoffed, “Jerk.”

Nice? I can’t believe I actually thought there was that possibility.

“You ungrateful little---”

“What are you two doing here?” Park Jimin asked as he came out from Moon Byulyi’s room.

“Clumsy girl tripped while chasing the kidnapper.”

Jimin then kneeled down before me and examined my leg. “Whoa, you had a really bad fall,” he paused, before looking at me with wide eyes, “Wait, you chased the kidnapper?”

Before I even get to reply, the teachers started coming out of Moon Byulyi’s room. Noticing our presence, Ms. Hwang Jina smiled and said, “There’s our hero.”

For a second there, I tho
