But today we use "if only", a phrase we use when we wish something could happen, and if it happens, then... this could be an example:

If only I could turn back the hands of time.

Foreword:
I had never seen her as a girl I would love. I had never seen her as a girl I would want to marry. I never did.
Years ago, that was what I thought. How I wish I had seen differently. But, times have changed as we were now mature adults, heading into the future with our dreams and pursuits. If only I had done something before so that she would be by my side now.
Now, I can wish and move on.
