5. Family Reunion

Oh! Are You Late Too?

Chapter Five

Minyoung woke as she landed on the floor with a thud. It didn't hurt as much as it would have as she had been virtually rolled into the blanket – her positioning almost reminded her of a seaweed roll. She was thankful that it had softened her fall but not as thankful as she would have been if it weren't for her killer headache. That's when she realised she wasn't in her room.

Wiggling wildly to try and escape her prison of blankets, she began panicking; her memory was still blurry. What did I do last night…who did I do last night? She thought back to the night, remembering how she drank, trying to get Jang Mi to sing – which meant that she was truly wasted as Jang Mi hated singing in front of people and she knew it. Once able to get out of the blankets, she stood, seeing to her relief she was fully clothed.

Looking around, she spotted a yellow post-it note on the door. Stepping over the pile of clothes on the floor, she grabbed it, reading it and suddenly remembering everything:

Sorry I had to leave before you woke up. You were really drunk last night so you probably don't remember much but you passed out before we did anything. You should help yourself to breakfast before you leave.

J-Hope

P.S. You snore like a pig.

Groaning in embarrassment, Min jumped up and down like a kid throwing a tantrum. Lately it seemed that it would be the best for her to just not leave the house. She'd only recently gotten over her Suga revenge fear and now she had to get over this.

Wait a second, she thought, looking around in panic. She began pacing, pulling at her hair in frustration. No, what if I run into him? She looked up suddenly, running to the mirror. Looking in it, she gasped in horror. Her hair was a mess – sticking up in random places, her shirt was un-tucked from her shorts, was hugely wrinkled and had a random pink stain on it. Min narrowed her eyes at it, pulling her top up and sniffing it. It smelt strangely of lemon.

Dropping her shirt, she looked around for her bag. It was lying on the floor, partly open but to her relief, with everything in it. She rummaged through it, pulling out her wipes. She tried to wipe the stain off and it faded slightly, but wouldn't disappear completely. Sighing, she decided to leave it like that and smoothing it out and tucking it in. It still looked pretty messy but it was better than before.

Taking more wipes, she wiped her face, removing any make up and leaving herself barefaced. She felt like it was better to have nothing on her face than the smudged make up from last night. After moisturising her face, she decided that braiding her hair would hide the dishevelled state it was currently in.

As she braided, she paused. Why am I doing this? She asked herself. I don't care what that thinks, she resolved, undoing the braid and leaving it a mess. So what if he thinks I'm a mess? If anything, I think he's a mess.

Nodding confidently at her reflection, she grabbed her bag and left the room. Her confidence faded almost instantly as she entered the living room. Looking around cautiously, she tiptoed over to the kitchen. While leaving straight away would be best, Min couldn't deny her stomach of its wishes. She grabbed an apple from a bowl on the counter, thinking that it would suffice until she got home.

Just as she was about to leave, she heard a song. Unsure of where it was coming from, it intrigued her and she felt the need to search it out. It sounded unfinished to her ears, as if it were missing several elements needed. The arrangement sounds weird, she thought to herself as she approached its source. While the melody and hook were already there, it lacked organisation and needed a bridge. This can't be Suga's song can it? His songs are way better than this.

When she reached the door it was coming from, she pushed it open slightly, her eyes only meeting darkness.

"Yah! Hoseok, I thought you had left for class already. Why are you back?" a familiar voice complained. Min realised then what she was doing was weird but instead of leaving, she froze, pushing the door open wider. The only thing that lit the room was the computer screens and she could tell it was a studio once in full view.

Suga looked up, confused that he had no reply. His eyes widened when they met Min's. "You," he breathed, looking shocked.

She opened to say something, then closed it when she realised she had nothing to say. She had no real explanation for why she was creeping on him apart from she was drawn to the music, which of course sounded stupid.

"You're the girl Hoseok bought home last night?" he raised his eyebrows.

Min glared at him, "Don't judge me. We didn't even do anything."

"Sure you didn't," Suga rolled his eyes in disbelief before redirecting his attention back to the computer screen.

gaped in offense, how dare he assume things. "We really didn't," Min argued.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever," he sighed, waving his hand behind him in a shooing motion. "To be honest, I could care less. You can go now."

Min scowled at him, about to head out when she stopped. Looking back, she saw that he was currently just staring at the screen, not doing a thing. It was obvious that he was suffering from a block at the moment and Min felt sorry for him. She felt like she knew what she could do to fix the song but she didn't know whether he cared for her opinion.

"Your arrangement," she blurted.

He didn't turn around as he replied blandly, "What about it?"

"It's off."

"Well thank you, Captain Obvious!" he exclaimed, turning to face her. He looked annoyed and tired. "Any suggestions to fix it?"

"Well, if you make the beat stronger, put the vocorder bits at the beginning and in certain places throughout and make the piano less prominent except for at the ends of the chorus then it would be partway there," she said really quickly. He looked at her in surprise as if he wasn't expecting her to actually respond with helpful suggestions. She just smiled smugly, glad that she was the one giving him tips instead of the other way around. Her smug smile disappeared when he rolled the chair to the side slightly.

"I hate saying this but I've been working on this song for what feels like years," he groaned, rubbing his face wearily, "Can you… can you…" He seemed to be forcing out the words, which amused Min greatly. She loved watching him struggle. After watching it for long enough for it become pitiful, she sighed, stepping in the room and closing the door.

"I’ll help you," she said. As long as you help me in the future, she thought, inwardly doing an evil laugh.

Unable to stop herself, Yunji thought back to the party. No one on campus seemed to remember the song – to her relief – but she did. The way everyone who knew her turned to stare at her was still fresh in her mind and she couldn't help but want to hide under her bed like when she was a little girl. Obviously that wasn't possible as she was currently in a class; she wasn't really paying attention.

She studied Directing, specialising in the theatre aspect and she was in her third year of university which meant all her classes were based in the MAP department. As everyone on campus knew, the MAP department was odd – the professors were no exception. In fact, they were the reason the department was so eccentric, most of them studying here before going off to do their art and then returning to teach.

Each of them did the stage name thing; there was no professor that made you call them by formal titles. Some people liked it but new people usually took a while to adjust to it. Especially with professors that went by names like her current one: G-Dragon. He was the man who directed most of the schools productions – being an old student who had left to go direct around the world. He'd even directed on Broadway for productions that had won awards, which was a big deal.

Most people avoided calling him by his chosen stage name, instead opting for Director GD. It seemed his name was too much for everyone, even though there had been much worse names in the past. She cringed at the memory of them. She was saved from thinking about them as GD ended the class, allowing everyone to leave.

Yunji gathered her stuff, not in a hurry to leave. This was her last lesson of the day and she hadn't made any plans with her friends to do anything. Once done, she hoisted her bag onto her shoulder, and then started making her way out. She was at the door when she heard GD call her, "Song Yunji, can I have a word please?"

She paused; worried that he might scold her for not paying attention. Turning back around, she took a few timid steps towards him, looking at him patiently.

"I was wondering if you might be interested in getting some directing experience," he said, shuffling some papers on his stand.

Her eyes widened in surprise, "Uh…"

He chuckled at her response, "Don't get too excited, it would only be as my assistant. As you probably know, the university's one hundred year anniversary is coming up and we're preparing a showcase for it. I'm going to need an assistant director and I was hoping you might take me up on the offer?"

"Uh…" Yunji was shocked; did he really want her to help him? "M-me?" she stuttered.

Nodding, he shrugged, "I've seen your work and while you're quiet, you really know what you're doing when it comes to directing. This showcase is important and it would be great if my best student were to help."

"B-best?"

"Yeah. That's you, Yunji. You see things differently to others and your creativity is impressive – and don't even get me started on your organisation," he smiled kindly at her.

She blushed, leaning forward and letting her hair cover her face. All these compliments were unexpected; she wanted to puff her chest out in pride but also wasn't sure if she liked the attention. When she didn't reply, he sighed, looking back at his desk.

"You don't have to if you don't want to. This is a great opportunity and I'm sure someone else in the class would take it if you don't. I would just really like it if it were you," he shrugged, "I've posted the audition day on the school notice board. It's in two weeks but I'd appreciate it if I had your reply by Monday. There's a lot of work to be done."

Yunji nodded, overwhelmed by the offer. Replying on Monday gave her only the weekend to consider it. Not wanting to bother him any longer, she bowed. "Th-thank you," she mumbled before speed walking out.

Taking a random direction, she began mulling it over. He was right, it was a great opportunity and it would look good when looking for jobs after graduation – but she was painfully shy. She couldn't direct in the way people were supposed to. She couldn't shout at people and tell them what she wanted for them. Feeling the gravity of her decision on her shoulders, Yunji sighed. She was torn and she had no idea what she was going to do.

Hoseok yawned as he stretched his legs. He was exhausted from the night before and suffering from a headache. Thinking back to the night before, he wondered what Min was doing and if she'd woken up okay. While he was worried, he didn't want anything romantic from her – not in the slightest. The night before had only happened because they were both drunk and nothing like that would ever happen again. At least he hoped.

His dance class was buzzing with excitement; most of them had seen the notice board which had the date of an audition on it. The audition was for the showcase which everyone knew was a big deal. Not just because it was the annual showcase which had scouts coming to the school but also because it was the Hundred Year Anniversary showcase. The school board was going to be pouring a lot of money into it and it was going to be very important for them.

Everyone knew that it was their opportunity to shine and everyone wanted their hand at trying. Everyone except for Hoseok; he just wanted to dance.

"So what do you think of it?" Hoseok's classmate and friend, Jackson asked him.

"About what?"

Jackson gave him an 'are you serious' look, raising his eyebrows in disbelief, "The showcase."

"Oh," Hoseok shrugged, "I dunno."

"What do you mean 'I dunno'?" Jackson put on his best Hoseok voice as he said this. "The showcase is a huge opportunity and you're one of the best dancers in the class."

"So? I don't know if I'm really interested in that sort of thing."

His friend gave him an over exaggerated look of surprise, his mouth gaping open and his hand on his heart. "You can't be serious. Yah, you really are something else," Jackson shook his head.

Hoseok chuckled, "Calm down. You should be happy I don't plan on auditioning – gives you more of a chance." His laughter grew as Jackson jokingly glared at him. Hoseok knew that Jackson wasn't taking him seriously; he had some serious acrobatic skills. The audition poster said that they were looking for any talent and tumbling intergraded with dance would surely be something that they went for.

If Hoseok were to audition, he would probably just dance which wasn't a bad thing. He knew that he was pretty good but he didn't want to have the responsibility of showing up to rehearsal and being at top shape on his shoulders. Most people didn't get why he was so laid back and care free about it all as most of them worked on their dance skills until it was no longer fun. Hoseok didn't ever want it to become like that for him; he always wanted it to be fun and enjoyable. No one really understood it but all he wanted was to dance.

Knocking on the door felt weird for Jimin as this used to be the home he lived in. He didn't come home often and this was the first time in months. While he was waiting, he looked around the garden. It was well maintained as his mother enjoyed gardening; it took him back to the days he was a kid and him and his little sister would run around the lawn as the sprinklers went off. A sad smile decorated his face as he thought of it.

His thoughts were interrupted as the door swung open to reveal his mom. She stood there dressed as usual in trousers and a blouse but this time she had an apron on and she was covered in flour. Jimin's eyes widened as she pulled him into a tight hug, getting flour all over him too. "Yah! Jiminie, where have you been?" she exclaimed as she squeezed him tightly.

He tapped her back in panic, "Can't… breathe."

She released him quickly, eyeing him in concern. "Sorry," she smiled; brushing off all the flour she'd left on him. "I've missed my beautiful son," she cooed, grabbing his cheeks. He tried shaking her off but she wouldn’t let him, holding on tight. Looking at his face for a little longer, she finally let go of his cheeks. "Come on in then," she grinned, beckoning him in.

He followed, taking in the surroundings as she led him to the kitchen. The house hadn't changed at all since he'd last came, which meant no new paint or pictures or decorations. Everything was as he still remembered it – that slightly came as a relief to him. Once they got into the kitchen, he sat on a stool at the counter while his mom went to a bowl that was filled with what seemed like batter. Jimin grimaced but did his best to hide it; his mom had never been the best cook.

"So, what possessed you to finally want to come home?" his mom asked as she mixed it.

"I missed you," he said, being partly truthful.

She snorted, "Oh please. I know why everyone's suddenly wanting to come around, it's cause he's gone on a business trip, isn’t it?"

"That's not true," Jimin lied, "Wait… what do you mean everyone?"

"Did you sister not tell you that she was coming to visit today too?" she raised her eyebrows at him.

He shook his head, "No, I had no idea."

Putting the bowl down, his mother looked at him with both disappointment and concern. Her arms were crossed as sighed, "When was the last time you talked to her?"

He opened his mouth to reply but was stopped by her narrowing her eyes and saying, "Checking her social networking sites doesn't count."

Closing his mouth, he looked down in shame. He loved his sister with all his heart but it was better for him to just stay away from her. A lot had gone down in the past, things that had pushed them away from each other. He missed how close they had used to be; at the same time he knew that he was the reason that they were no longer that close.

Noticing his disheartened look, his mom patted his shoulder, "If it makes you feel any better, she stalks your social accounts too."

He smiled, not surprised that she did that. While she tried to pretend that she didn't care, he knew she loved him as much as he loved her.

"I wonder what's taking her so long," his mom mumbled as she went back to cooking. He nodded, eyeing her warily. She was adding things to the mixture and he was getting more and more worried about what she was making. Please don't make me eat it, please don't make me eat it, he chanted as she poured it into the tray. Once done, she put it in the oven, looking very proud of herself.

"I'm home!" someone called as his mom settled down. Hearing the voice, Jimin's ears perked up. He recognised it as his little sister's voice – one he hadn't heard in a long, long time. Jumping from her seat, his mom ran to hug her, embracing her as tight as she'd held him.

"I… can't… breathe…" she chocked, tapping his mom's back wildly. He watched amused as his mom pulled away and did the usual routine of grabbing her cheeks and squeezing.

"Omo! My beautiful rose has returned back home," she cooed. Jimin laughed as his sister struggled to get her to remove her hands. He sympathised at the same time – their mother's hands were like clamps or claws. Only she could remove them but she usually waited a long time before doing that.

After a couple of minutes, she finally let go, giving her one last tap on the cheek before going to check on her 'cake'. Jimin watched his sister re-orientate herself, and then look at him. Her eyes widened slightly and her lips parted in surprise. She probably hadn't been expecting him to be there as he went home even more rarely than she did.

"Hi," he smiled at her, nervous for how she would react.

"Hey," she said, still in shock. She attempted a smile which was part way there as her dimples showed but her lips didn’t curve up at all. Jimin wasn't surprised as he knew that the last time they'd talked he'd really hurt her and he knew she would probably struggle to forgive him. He was surprised however when she shook her head and a real smile appeared on her face. A genuine one that made her look so happy, he couldn't help but feel guilty.

The surprises kept coming as she approached him, embracing him in a hug that was almost as tight as his mom's. He didn't return it for a few seconds while his mind struggled to realise what was going on but when it did, he returned the hug. Standing up and lifting her up. She squealed, reminding him of when they were little and he would give her piggy back rides.

"Minnie," she said into his shoulder. He could feel a slightly wet patch there and for a second he thought she was crying. That thought was dismissed when he pulled away to find her smiling at him, looking happier than he'd imagined her to be at their reunion. He didn't mind though as this was much better than her hating him.

When they finally broke away from their hug, she smiled at him, her dimples getting deeper, "Yah! Have you gotten shorter?"

He laughed, rolling his eyes, "I'm glad to see you've kept your sense of humour."

Her smile grew, "I'm glad to see you."

His eyes widened at her honesty – his sister usually hid her emotions and feelings from the world. "Same here," he replied.

"So, how's school?" she asked, clearing and trying to be casual again.

He grinned at her, "Good. What about you?"

"It's fine I guess," she said. The atmosphere was kind of awkward but that had been expected; they wouldn't be able to go straight back to how they used to be.

"Cakes done," his mom exclaimed, breaking the awkward silence. His sister's eyes widened, as she looked at him with concern. He nodded, giving her a look that said 'I got here after she'd started cooking'. Both children looked around in fear, trying to find a way of escaping before they'd be forced to try the cake.

Jimin was surprised when he heard his little sister sigh, "Jimin, just say it."

He gave her a confused look, "Say what?"

She gave him a look back that said 'play along'. He raised his eyebrows but decided to trust her. "Oh yeah, I can't, you know I get easily embarrassed. You say it for me."

Acting like she was frustrated, she sighed, "If you wanted a slice of cake first then you should have just told her."

He looked at her in surprise and betrayal as she continued, "You're lucky I need the toilet or else I would have fought you for the first slice. Your welcome." She said, patting him on the shoulder before running to the bathroom. He watched her go, glaring at her disappearing figure.

"Yah! Joo Jang Mi!" he called in fury. This is probably her payback, he sighed as he turned to face his mother. She looked excited to be serving him her cake but it was also probably the excitement that he and sister were finally talking again. Jimin had to admit he was happy to be speaking to her again – even if she was a traitor.
