The Girl on the Balcony

April Flowers

The next few days at work, Chanyeol couldn't help but fidget and worry about Ara. Every time he walked to a table to take orders, he also looked out the window at her balcony to see if she was there. But every time he looked, Ara was nowhere to be found. He would then turn his attention back to the customers and dejectedly walk away. The cycle went on for about a day or two until Chanyeol decided he couldn't take it and needed to find a way to see her. While busing tables he would scheme different ways to get Ara to come out. After another day of worrying, he finally came up with a plan to say sorry.

That morning, another person was walking to the cafe with a plan in mind as well. This person was Kai and he had a plan to surprise the members with Kyungsoo. He walked with a spring in his step as he entered the cafe bearing gifts. Chanyeol spotted the new customer and his messy head of hair and immediately greeted him with a smile.

"Welcome!" Chanyeol boasted with a huge grin while bowing. Kai nodded back and waved with the hand holding his gift for Kyungsoo. Chanyeol's smile faltered once he noticed what he was holding. He immediately scurried over to Kai and spoke in a hushed tone, "I'm sorry but customers aren't allowed to bring in food from other businesses." Chanyeol murmured while glancing at the cup carrier in Kai's grasp.

"Huh?" He confusedly stared at Chanyeol before following his gaze towards the cup carrier from Starbucks. "Oh! I'm sorry, I totally forgot. Should I throw it away? I mean they were kind of expensive... Like five bucks each... Do you think I could--"

"Kai!" Kyungsoo interrupted Kai and Chanyeol's dumb and dumber exchange while shaking his head. "It's okay, Chanyeol. He's my friend." Chanyeol stared blankly from Kai to Kyungsoo and then nodded, breaking back into a smile once he realized the situation.

"Sorry about the Starbucks thing..." Kai apologized to Chanyeol. Chanyeol just shook his head and smiled. Kai sheepishly smiled back and walked towards Kyungsoo. He pouted and pushed the drinks in his direction. "Just take them."

"Are you dumb or what?" Kyungsoo laughed while taking the drinks. Kai broke into a smile and started laughing too.

"I just wanted to get you something. And I guess I momentarily forgot you owned a cafe where you can have all the coffee you want." He shrugged with an embarassed chuckle.

"Well anyways, thanks. I mean, who doesn't like Starbucks?" Kyungsoo sarcastically remarked. "So, why did you come today?"

"I just wanted to hang out, maybe... go see the members?" Kai suggested eagerly. Kyungsoo's smile fell and an apologetic frown replaced it.

"I won't be able to finish work until closing time... Sorry." He hesitated as he rejected Kai's offer. Kai expected as much from Kyungsoo but made sure not to give up.

"It's okay! I don't have practice today so I can wait here until you finish!" Kai exclaimed and ran over to a seat by the window. He sat down and crossed his arms while looking at Kyungsoo. "See, hyung? I'll just wait and you won't even know I'm here." He shouted across the room to Kyungsoo.

"I highly doubt that." Kyungsoo rolled his eyes and walked away to the kitchen.

While Kai took out his phone to entertain himself, Chanyeol was ready to set his plan into motion. With Kyungsoo in the back, he was able to start moving without getting caught. Usually the cafe didn't start filling up with customers until midday. And since it was still morning and the only customer was Kai, Chanyeol could get the plan moving without any trouble.

"The poster should be under the table outside... I just have to get her to come to the balcony." He mumbled to himself while glancing at the large white poster outside. Kai glanced over in Chanyeol's direction and watched as he spoke to himself.

"I wonder what he's up to." He whispered with a raised brow. Glad that he had a new source of entertainment, Kai watched Chanyeol stumble around the cafe with a mischevious grin.

Chanyeol swiftly ran outside with his head ducked, attempting to be stealthy. This proved to be difficult for Chanyeol, however, since his large feet slammed on the hardwood floor of the cafe as he ran. Not realizing how obvious he was, he began putting up the poster he prepared with his head still ducked down low. After hanging the poster, Chanyeol sprinted back inside and into the kitchen to commence the second part of his plan. Kai watched in amusement, wondering what he would do next.

"This waiter is so fun." Kai giggled. He had no idea what Chanyeol was doing or what the poster was about, but watching him run around like an idiot was more fun than the games on his phone would ever be.

"Chanyeol, what are you doing? Go out and wait for the customers!" Baekhyun exclaimed once he saw Chanyeol hurry into the kitchen. Instead of turning around, Chanyeol ran past Baekhyun and towards the locker room.

"I just have to get something in my locker!" He called back. Shutting the door of the locker room behind him, he exhaled deeply and turned around. Once he turned around, he came face to face with Kyungsoo. Chanyeol shouted in surprise the moment he saw Kyungsoo, who just stared back with big eyes.

"What are you doing? Why aren't you waiting for customers?" Kyungsoo questioned in a monotone.

"I-I had to get something!" He stammered, struggling to speak. "It was... umm.. my-my phone! I think I lost it! Can I use yours to call it?" Kyungsoo shrugged and handed him his phone out of the pocket of his apron. With shaky hands Chanyeol took the phone and pretended to type in his phone number while he opened up the message inbox and sent a text to Ara.

Come out to the balcony.

"I thought you were calling your phone. Why are you texting instead?"

"I, um, just wanted to try something different." He replied, mentally facepalming himself for such a stupid answer. After the message sent, he immediately deleted it and tossed the phone back to Kyungsoo. "Thanks. Gotta go, bye!" He shouted and ran back outside. Once he emerged from the kitchen, Kai excitedly focused his attention on Chanyeol. After Chanyeol ran outside, he hid behind a flower bush that gave him a perfect view of Ara's balcony.

Ara stared at the text from her brother in confusion and carefully opened the door to the balcony. She knew her brother wouldn't let her just go out if there were people, so it must be safe? Confident that she wouldn't be seen, she placed her hands on the ledge of the balcony and looked down at the cafe. The eye-catching poster immediately caught her attention before anything else. In bold black marker, the poster read 'I'M SORRY I SCARED YOU :)' in Chanyeol's big handwriting. The passive aggressive smiley face was something Chanyeol didn't take notice of, thinking it was a nice touch. After reading the poster, Ara realized it was a message from Chanyeol. Kyungsoo told her all about Chanyeol becoming the new waiter and knew it was Chanyeol she made eye contact with before, allowing her to become acquainted with him. She smiled at the poster and quietly laughed at it. The whole thing about it made her extremely happy, from the way it was haphazardly taped onto the cafe window to the inappropriate smiley face.

Down from the cafe, Kai was watching the whole situation play out. At first his attention was focused on Chanyeol hidden behind the bush, but once he followed Chanyeol's gaze, his mind went blank. All he could see was the girl on the balcony. She had just emerged from the apartment and placed her hands on the ledge. Simultaneously, Kai stood up and placed his hands down onto the table. The wind blew her hair out of her face and revealed her clear doe eyes and pink lips. It was like a scene out of a movie, everyone was captivated by the girl on the balcony. She stared in the direction of the cafe and smiled. Kai's heart stopped at that moment as he stared at the girl. He could see her laughing and wanted so badly to hear what her laughter sounded like. As quick as the moment began, it ended with the girl walking back into the apartment and Kai looking away.

What was that... Kai thought to himself as he wondered what came over him. He couldn't help but stare at her. This was something that never happened before. He was used to stealing the attention, not the other way around. All that he knew was that he needed to see her again.

A/N: Yay, first Kai/Ara moment! Anyways, I hope you noticed the new poster! Courtesy of the fierce postershop :)

Before I finish this chapter, look at these gifs of Kai.

God. damn. He is everything. That hair rustle and those arms and that cute embarassed face and omg I'm gonna seriously cry because of the hot. Okay, sorry guys I just felt that was necessary. My laptop is literally at 2% and these gifs are my priority. Oh man.

Anyways, I hope you guys like this chapter as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Chapter 8: asdfghjkl this chapter was literally the cutest thing ever. And I like how even though this story isn't necessarily a humorous one, you always add funny little parts that lighten up the mood. Oh, and don't feel bad about taking too long with updates! Your education is much more important :) Don't worry. We'll patiently wait for your updates. Take as long as you need.

Chapter 7: Ok here are my thoughts to this: Social anxiety is different for everybody. I speak for myself when I say this because I suffer from it as well however not to the extent as other people i guess. Hence everyone has different experiences. For ME I love people. I WANT to make friends but its hard. A million and one thoughts races through my head when im around new ppl. What to say, how to say it, how to look or even sound while saying it. Over and over again until I just dont say or do anything. Sweaty palms, dry throat, even heart palpitations sometimes, dizziness, feeling closed in. Feeling as if everyone is looking at me. Too much attention. So I feel like I need to hide. Claustrophobic in sense but instead of a tight space its like people instead. These are my symptoms. I suffer from this because I dont take medication or see a therapist. I guess im self healing? Writing this is part of my self healing btw. But omg I think I have come a looong way. I used to be terribly shy as well and a very silent reader. I havent been on my facebook in years because of social anxiety. I still havent come around to even be around family. Except for my immediate family who I live with. Its tough. I said all that to say that its different for everybody but there are common symptoms amongst us. I dont think you offend anyone well not me at least. And I also think that you write ara really well. So dont be scared girl. Do you. Ill still be here. I really like your story. And I think that I may have subscribed to it because I relate to Ara. Only I wish I knew what triggered my anxiety but I think I know what triggered hers. Sorry for the long post. Its weird. I have this anxiety but I think because it causes me to hold back from speaking that I talk so so much through text. And because this online and not in person its much much easier for me to communicate with ppl. Ok I'm done.

Chapter 7: You did a good job at portraying a panic attack. But something I'm confused at is how quickly Ara is becoming less scared, when she mentioned wanting to have a new friend. It's not easy for a socially anxious person to say that. Especially since Ara is always home, I feel she should still be scared whenever there is someone new. Sorry if this sounds rude or anything. I don't mean to offend

Chapter 6: Nooo this chapter was definitely NOT boring at all! I had a big cheesy smile on my face the entire time. I love these boys so much and especially their interactions with each other whether its fiction or not. In this chap I could totally picture them all on the floor laughing and being goofballs. And the friendship between suho and kyungsoo is heartwarming. Suho is so caring to him I almost teared up when they reunited. Im such a er for those kinds of things. And the dance battle scene was good too.

Chapter 5: "I can't believe a girl could drop such a huge piece of--"
Lmfao! Ah, this part was too funny to be ignored c':
But on a more serious note, my heart aches for poor little Chanyeol. I'm not exactly sure if he likes her in a romantic type of way yet, but he definitely has some feelings for her. But then there's Ara who only got to se Kai's back and he already managed to melt her into a pile of goo and oh my gosh someone stop Chanyeol before he ends up with a broken heart! This story makes me feel so many emotions all at once and wow I'm so sorry for this comment but this update was literally so good.

Chapter 5: Hmmm... I can totally relate to Ara. I know the feeling of being anxious and having panic attacks can be scary too. Somehow I feel that Kyungsoo is somewhat ashamed at his family situation by the way he avoids talking about Ara. Maybe I'm over-analyzing this but even though he thinks that he's protecting her, it seems like he's protecting himself. I think that by hiding her away and not helping step by step to "fix" her anxiety, he can somehow get away from the whole situation. Judging by how Ara acted here, it seems like if she was pushed hard enough, she might be able to go outside for once. And judging from Chanyeol's character, it seems like he might be the one to do just that. But then again, Kai is a strong competitor. By the way, does Ara take any medication? Or did I skip that part? Sorry for such a long comment but I like how the story is going so far! Hwaiting Author-nim! ^^

Chapter 4: Yeaaaah new subbie here! I have no idea how I found this story but I'm glad I did. I can tell its going to be a good romcom for my exo fanfic collection. This chapter had me giggling like crazy, too. Chanyeol is such a sweetheart here and I love the way kyungsoo is written as well. Also, I can never grasp Xiumin's personality in any fanfic he's in because well, he never talks so how would you know how to write him? I do notice that the 'trend' (see what i did there) is to write him as a hyung who is very mature and might say some funny things every now and then. But I feel like is that his nature in rl? from what I see, he is very reserved. Idk I wish he'd open up more. This is something I've been holding in for quite a while now. But anyways, I'm rambling... love the story line and dialogue between the characters. Please continue!
