Episode 5

Girls' Generation

Seo Joo-hyun, 19, born in Korea but brought up in England, has returned to Korea to find out about her past. She has spent the majority of her life in England, so she has little knowledge of Korean culture. To top that off, her spoken Korean is heavily accented. As such, the locals can barely understand her when she speaks the language.

A student at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance in London, Joo-hyun’s reason of visit is holiday. But she has another agenda in mind. When she was just a baby, she was found abandoned at the doorstep of a church in Seoul together with a red string. She grew up in the orphanage ran by the church for about 4 years before she was adopted by an English couple. That pretty much explains why she is not very fluent in Korean.

A little over two years ago, her adoptive parents told her all about how and why she was adopted. This intrigued Joo-hyun and she decided that she wants to go in search of her biological parents. Well, even if it’s only a glance from afar, that is already enough for her. All she asks for is to know that they are alive and well. So, Joo-hyun started planning and saving for her trip back to Korea.

And that’s the reason why Joo-hyun is walking in the streets of Seoul, just looking around on her own. If she’s lucky, she may even run into people from the orphanage she was in and they may recognize her and tell her who her parents are. But her thoughts are interrupted by a sudden, loud scream from a woman with long, light brown, wavy hair. Everyone on the street stop to look at what this woman is screaming about but she seems to be screaming for no apparent reason.

‘What? I just like to scream! So what?’ the woman says and continues screaming until she runs off to an ATM.

Korea is an interesting place, isn’t it? Joo-hyun thinks to herself and giggles lightly.

Jessica looks at her Prada bag. Now that she has no wedding ring on her finger and all her financial support cut off in an instant, the only hope left seems to be the off-season, discounted Prada she has with her (although she still does not know about the sad but true fact of the bag).

Jessica scans around the area, making sure that there are no familiar faces and no paparazzi. With one hand on her sack and one hand holding on to her Prada bag like her life depended on it, Jessica walks quietly but quickly to a shop she loathes visiting in her current state – Milan Station, a shop that buys and sells second hand branded luxury items. Jessica is greeted by the sale assistant, which she acknowledges briefly, before proceeding with her sack and Prada to the counter. She puts the bag on the counter and asks for the best price but the sale assistant looks at Jessica as if a moron has just walked through the door.

‘Miss, you do know that this model was from two years ago, right?’ the sales assistant says.

‘What? Have you even checked properly? My fia – my ex-boyfriend just gave me this yesterday!’ Jessica exclaims.

‘I’m very sure this Prada is from 2012. I think it would be best if we don’t waste each other’s time.’

‘! Is this his idea of a joke?’ Jessica turns away from the girl and says to herself. She then turns to face the girl again with a pitiful look on her face. ‘I know this looks bad but I really, really need some money right now. Can you please give me the lowest possible price for this, please? I beg you, please.’

The sales assistant rolls her eyes at Jessica. ‘I don’t think I can help you, miss. I’m serious.’

‘Please~ I’m begging you~ this bag is all I have now and if you don’t take it, I won’t have any money to eat.’ Jessica continues begging.

‘Oh please! What the heck is all this about? No money to eat?’ A disembodied voice speaks. Jessica and the girl turn their heads and Jessica scowls when she sees the owner of the voice – Yuri!

‘I think you got it wrong. I have money; I just chose not to eat so that I can maintain this body of mine.’ Jessica says proudly.

‘Well…judging by the way your body looks now…you do need lots of work maintaining it.’ Yuri smirks, causing Jessica to scowl again. ‘Do you need money badly?’

Jessica ignores Yuri, checking out her own manicured nails instead.

‘Yes or no?’ Yuri continues, crossing her arm.

‘She said she needs money badly just now.’ the sales assistant chips in. Jessica huffs but the sales assistant gives her a patronizing smile.

‘Then, I’ll take it.’ Yuri says.

‘Take what?’ Jessica asks.

‘Your off-season Prada. 5 million won.’ Yuri offers.

‘6 million.’ Jessica bargains.

‘4 million.’

‘DEAL!’

‘But, I will need you to come with me to my office.’

Jessica shoots Yuri a suspicious look. Yuri rolls her eyes.

‘So that I can give you the money, sweetheart. Yes, I’m rich but I don’t walk around like an ATM. So, will you come with me to my office? Please?’ Yuri says.

Unbeknownst to Jessica, and because they haven’t seen each other for so long (not like they would want to anyway), Yuri is the founder and CEO of one of Korea’s leading fitness center, The Fitness Concept. When they enter the fitness center, Yuri is greeted by the front desk staff and Jessica is greeted with the poster of a girl that the whole of Korea knows and loves.

‘Isn’t that…Choi Sooyoung?’ Jessica points to the large poster adorning the wall.

‘Oh, of course it is. She’s my new spokesperson.’ Yuri says proudly. ‘Come on.’

Yuri leads Jessica to the center’s office area. While walking, Sooyoung runs into them and Jessica nearly loses her breath when she sees Sooyoung. Sooyoung also happens to be a dance instructor for the fitness center and she just finished teaching a dance class. She is dressed in her sports gear and Jessica just can’t take her eyes off Sooyoung. How can anyone look so athletic and beautiful at the same time?

‘Omo, Choi Sooyoung!’ Jessica exclaims.

Sooyoung smiles sweetly at Jessica and waves at her. ‘Annyeong.’

‘Jessica, why don’t you wait for me at the waiting area while I go fetch the money for your bag? Sooyoung, I was just looking for you. Come see me in my office.’ Yuri says.

While Yuri and Sooyoung go over their business in Yuri’s office, Jessica just sits at the waiting area, waiting for Yuri and the money that she has promised her. Yuri orders Sooyoung to close the door once they are in her office.

‘Unnie, is that pretty lady out there your friend?’ Sooyoung asks.

Yuri shoots Sooyoung a killer stare.

‘First of all, how many times do I have to tell you not to call me unnie when we’re here?’ Yuri says.

‘Okay, sorry, Miss Kwon CEO.’ Sooyoung says.

‘Drop the CEO, Miss Kwon will do. You make me feel like a dork when you add the CEO.’ Yuri huffs and Sooyoung sighs, as though she is used to this by now. ‘Okay, let’s move on to more important things. Is she really that pretty? Tell me, honestly, between me and her, who is prettier?’

‘Err…’ And that is only all Sooyoung manages to say.

‘Oh please, Choi Sooyoung! You’re hopeless!’ Yuri says in English before continuing in Korean. ‘Now, this is more important than you calling me unnie here and you thinking that she is pretty. Listen here, Sooyoung, that woman outside is not my friend.’

‘What? She’s not your friend? But I thought – ‘

‘What you think is not important.’ Yuri says and takes out a magazine from her desk drawer. She flips open to a page and smiles. ‘Look, I want you to buy this for me, right now.’ Yuri points to a picture of the newest Prada bag.

‘But, Miss Kwon, I thought I heard you said something about your friend’s bag?’ Sooyoung looks at Yuri, confused.

‘She’s not my friend, damn it! Just do as I say, will you?’

‘Okay, okay, I’ll go right away. But, is it a good idea to keep your fri- I mean, not-friend waiting?’

‘That’s none of your concern. And make sure you get the correct bag. Out.’ Yuri commands.

Sooyoung promptly leaves Yuri’s office once she is told to leave. She sees Jessica waiting at the waiting area and smiles at her while at the same time feeling a little bad for her.

Sooyoung can only do what Yuri tells her to do. That’s a little sad when you think about it, considering the fact that Choi Sooyoung is one of the nation’s biggest names. Everyone knows who she is and everyone loves her. Yet, nobody really knows what she is going through. She may be rich and famous but she is also a distant relative of Yuri and if that’s not bad enough, Yuri played a huge role in Sooyoung’s success. That explains why underneath all the glitz and glamour, Sooyoung is merely a puppet. However, things are not as bad as it seems. For one, Yuri became Sooyoung’s legal guardian when Sooyoung’s parents passed away when she was only 15, as her other closer next of kin were either dead or had migrated to other countries. Even though they are distant relatives, Yuri makes sure that Sooyoung’s needs are taken care of, although this also means that Sooyoung has to endure Yuri’s harsh and demanding behavior. Perhaps it’s due to her naturally optimistic nature and time factor, Sooyoung has grown immune to Yuri’s diva attitude. They may have lived together for 7 years, but Yuri still comes off as a stranger to Sooyoung most of the time.

Sooyoung sets foot in the official Prada store and looks for the model that Yuri wants. After looking around for a few minutes, she finally finds it and walks away with it with a discount. Well, guess it’s not so bad after all being a puppet celebrity.

While walking back to the center, Sooyoung hears her stomach growling. She realizes that she has not eaten anything yet after the intense dance lesson she had just finished moments ago. She continues walking until she sees a café and decides to eat something light there. When she enters the café, she sees a girl struggling with her order at the counter. From the looks of it, the girl looks Korean but Sooyoung thought that maybe she was born overseas. Sooyoung walks up to them and sees if she can help the girl out.

‘Excuse me, but can I help?’ Sooyoung asks and smiles at the girl and the man behind the counter.

The man at the counter recognizes Sooyoung and squeals. ‘OMO! CHOI SOOYOUNG!’

Sooyoung continues to smile at the man, who seems to have forgotten that the girl is not done ordering yet. ‘Yes, it’s me! Please continue to support me, thank you. Please excuse me if I’m rude, but what seems to be the matter here?’ Sooyoung asks.

‘Oh! I can’t seem to understand what this girl wants.’ the man at the counter says.

‘Miss, what would you like to have?’ Sooyoung asks the girl in English with her award-winning smile.

‘Thank goodness!’ the girl says in English with a British accent. ‘I wanted my eggs sunny side up and I tried to tell him in Korean but the thing is I’ve been living in the UK for so long I’m not very familiar with the language. So, I guess there was some misunderstanding.’

Even though Sooyoung is not that good in English, she manages to catch what the girl says and conveys them to the man. She then orders a short stack of ribs with extra hot sauce. Some food after a workout session! Since she has no more items on her schedule, she decides to dine with the girl and tries to make friends with her.

‘Thank you so much for helping me out, unnie.’ the girl says in Korean. ‘It’s just that my Korean is not very good and I just came back from England.’

‘No mention. By the way, I’m Choi Sooyoung and I’m a model.’ Sooyoung says.

‘Oh, no wonder that guy looked starstruck when he saw you back there. I’m Seo Joo-hyun. Nice to meet you, Sooyoung unnie.’ Joo-hyun says.

‘Well, they may know my fame but they don’t know my pain…anyway, what do you do?’

‘I’m a student at the Royal Academy of Dance in London.’

‘Wow! So you’re a dancer? Omo! You must be very good then.’

‘I’m still learning. It takes a lot of hard work and practice to be good.’

‘Were you born in England? What takes you back here?’

‘Well…’ Joo-hyun thinks for a while before continuing. ‘Here’s the thing. I believe I can trust you, unnie, so I’m telling you why I’m here.’

Sooyoung’s eyes widen in surprise. ‘You…you are a secret agent sent by the British government?’

Joo-hyun laughs upon hearing that. Sooyoung joins her a moment later.

‘No, of course not, unnie. Well, you see, I was actually born here in Seoul but I was adopted by a British couple when I was about 4 or 5. They told me a lot of things about my childhood in the orphanage and how I was abandoned at the doorstep of a church. And since I’m having a summer break now, I thought why not I come back to Korea to try and look for my parents? I know it’s almost impossible to look for them just like that but even just a glance from afar and knowing that they are alive and well…that’s all I ask.’

‘Oh…that’s sad, Joo-hyun. But, don’t worry. I’ll help you.’

‘Jinjak yo?’

Sooyoung smiles and nods her head enthusiastically.

‘I never thought I’d meet someone so kind in Korea. Thank you so much, unnie.’

‘That’s what friends are for. Come on, let’s eat.’

After all these years, maybe Sooyoung has made a true friend. Who knows?

After the girls had finished their meal, they part ways and Sooyoung returns to the fitness center with the Prada bag. She goes right up to Yuri’s office and hands her the bag. Upon receiving the bag, Yuri smirks. She takes the bag and walks right out to the waiting area, where Jessica is still waiting. But judging by the look on Jessica’s face, it is not hard to tell that she is getting impatient.

‘Jess~ look what I found. The new 2014 collection.’ Yuri mocks.

Jessica looks at the bag and she glares at Yuri furiously. ‘Are you trying to play with me? I thought we came to an agreement!’

‘Please~ that was a 2012 model. If we’re still living in 2012, maybe I will consider buying that bag from you.’

At that point, all Jessica wants to do is to kill Yuri. She balls her fist, as though she is about to give Yuri a er punch to the face but she sighs in the end.

‘You!’ Jessica starts. ‘Princess oo! Always so full of poop, nobody wants to be friends with you! BLUEK!’

‘WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?’ Yuri raises her voice and glares at Jessica like she is about to eat her up. Before she can do anything to her, Jessica quickly pulls her sack with her and leaves the fitness center.

Little do they know that Sooyoung is actually observing all of this from a corner. What exactly does this little insult that Jessica had thrown at Yuri means?

Jessica’s phone rings right after she exits the building. She picks up the call.

‘Hello?’

‘Good afternoon, can I speak to Miss Jessica Jung?’

‘Speaking.’

‘Miss Jung, I’m calling from the hospital. I have bad news to inform you but your friend Kim Hyoyeon has gone missing.’

‘WHAT?’

‘WHAT? Hyoyeon’s missing?’ Taeyeon exclaims.

After Jessica receives the call from the hospital, she goes to the hospital to grasp the situation better. She sees a familiar looking figure entering Hyoyeon’s room and leaving in a hurry and Hyoyeon running out of the room moments later through the hospital’s CCTV. She decides to keep all this to herself and tries to look for Hyoyeon herself. She soon becomes exhausted from the dragging of her sack and running around in heels. So, she decides to call Taeyeon and inform her that Hyoyeon had gone missing. By the time she gives Taeyeon a call, it is already late evening around dinner time. Everyone at the dinner table look at Taeyeon and her mother-in-law doesn’t look the least bit pleased to see her behave this way.

‘Yes, I received a call from the hospital and they told me that she’s missing. I tried to look for her but I can’t find her as well.’ Jessica says.

‘Okay…let me – OMO!’ Taeyeon suddenly screams when she goes to the living room to think of solutions. She sees Hyoyeon practicing her dance moves on top of a building. What’s more, Hyoyeon is on live news broadcast! That means the whole of Korea is actually seeing this!

‘What? What happened?’

‘It’s…it’s Hyoyeon! She’s about to jump off a building!’

‘What the heck are you talking about, Taeyeon?’

‘I’m serious! It’s on TV! Hyoyeon is on live news broadcast! Wait, hold on the line, I have another call coming in. Hello?’

‘Hello? Taeyeon?’ It is Sunny.

‘Sunny?’

‘Did you see the news?’

‘Yes. We need to go get her right now!’

After she hangs up, Taeyeon grabs hold of Dong Wook and drags him out of the house. Her mother-in-law shouts after her but she only apologizes briefly and promises her that they will come back in one piece. Taeyeon needs Dong Wook’s help to drive her to the place where Hyoyeon is so that they can save Hyoyeon. She can worry about the consequences involving her mother-in-law’s wrath later.

While feeding her mother some soup, Yoona sees the live news broadcast and she gasps when she sees that Hyoyeon on live TV. Hyoyeon is on top a building and she seems to be practicing her dance moves and smiling and laughing to herself. Yoona dabs her mother’s mouth with a napkin and runs out of the house to go to where Hyoyeon is.

In another corner of Seoul at a fancy restaurant, Tiffany is having dinner with her boss when she sees the live news broadcast in their private room. Tiffany is worried when she sees that the person is actually Hyoyeon and she loses focus on the dinner and her dinner date. Her boss tries to get her attention but she excuses herself and accidentally tips over a glass of wine on her boss. She wipes it quickly and leaves the restaurant to look for Hyoyeon.

Back in The Fitness Concept, Yuri is running on the treadmill in her office when she sees Hyoyeon on TV. She is on top of a building and is practicing her dance moves and she can fall anytime. Sooyoung comes into Yuri’s office and asks if they are ready to go home. Yuri asks her to wait for a while as her eyes are still fixed on the screen. Sooyoung is curious as to what is grabbing hold of Yuri’s attention so she looks at the screen too. Sooyoung does not know the woman on TV but she knows that she is in danger. Perhaps…this is one of Yuri-unnie’s friend?

‘Hyoyeon…please be safe…’ Taeyeon keeps repeating this as though it is some sort of mantra while she is in the car with Dong Wook. Moments later, her phone rings and it is a call from Jessica.

‘Jessica?’ Taeyeon says as soon as she answers the call.

‘Taeyeon, is that you in that white convertible? Look to your right!’ Jessica says.

Taeyeon looks to her right and she sees Jessica waving furiously at her. She asks Dong Wook to stop the car to let Jessica in. Jessica climbs into the car and they then speed off to the building where Hyoyeon is, well, ‘practicing’. For a moment there, everything seems to be going fine until Dong Wook breaks the silence.

‘Hi, I’m Lee Dong Wook, Taeyeon’s husband. Are you the friend that is getting married?’

Jessica’s expression instantly changes. She goes from being worried for Hyoyeon to being offended and annoyed by Dong Wook’s question. Taeyeon looks from the side mirror and she catches a sight of Jessica’s pissed off look. She gasps and pinches Dong Wook’s arm. Dong Wook looks at Taeyeon, searching for an explanation.

‘Pleasure to meet you, Dong Wook. But didn’t your wife tell you? The wedding’s called off!’ Jessica says and smiles sarcastically.

‘Oh…that’s…sorry to hear about that.’ Dong Wook apologizes.

They continue the rest of the ride in silence until they reach their destination. As soon as they arrive on the location where Hyoyeon is, a throng of news broadcasters and journalists surrounded the building, all trying to get a scoop of what is going on. The police are also there to make sure that no one crosses the police line. Taeyeon, Jessica and Dong Wook hurry to the front of the line. Halfway through running, they hear someone calling out their names. They quickly spin around to find Sunny running towards them and running out of breath. They try to get past the police line but an officer hold them off.

‘Officer, that’s our friend up there. Can we go talk to her please?’ Taeyeon says.

‘The negotiators are up there doing their job.’ the officer says.

‘If they are successful, our friend wouldn’t be up there now!’ Sunny argues.

‘Just let us in. We’ll be able to talk to her. We are best friends, please.’ Jessica chips in.

‘Well…okay, I guess.’ the officer lifts up the line and the three of them enter the danger zone. When Dong Wook wants to go in as well, the officer stops him.

‘What about you?’ the officer asks.

‘I’m the husband of the girl’s best friend.’ Dong Wook replies.

‘Then you stay here.’

Dong Wook is shoved back to the back of the line and he looks at the top of the building and calls out to Taeyeon, hoping that she is safe.

Once Taeyeon, Jessica and Sunny make it to the top of the building, the negotiators tell them that this is an extremely critical situation and they must be careful not to provoke her any further.

‘Hyoyeon ah! It’s us! Please come down now, it’s dangerous up there!’ Jessica says.

‘Yes, just come down now, please!’ Taeyeon says.

Hyoyeon stops dancing and turns around to find her best friends looking worriedly at her. The three of them are shocked to see Hyoyeon’s current state – she looks like she just escaped from the asylum!

‘Girls’ Generation? My Girls’ Generation? Hi girls! Come on! Let’s dance!’ Hyoyeon claps her hands and jumps up and down.

‘Hyoyeon! Stop jumping! We’ll dance with you, here!’ Sunny says, pointing to the ground. ‘Come on, Hyo. It will be just like the old times. Come down now and we’ll dance.’

‘Down there? No way! This is my stage! This is where I want to dance and this is where I should dance!’ Hyoyeon says, turning back to her ‘audience’ below. ‘Annyeong everyone! This is Kim Hyoyeon and I’m here to dance for you!’

‘Hyoyeon, please stop. It’s really dangerous up there.’ Taeyeon tries to convince her.

‘Dangerous? What do you know about dangerous?’ Hyoyeon faces the three women once again. ‘Do you know what is dangerous? When my dream is snatched away, when I can’t dance anymore, when my studio is taken away from me, that’s dangerous!’ Hyoyeon laughs like a maniac for a while before bending down and bursting into tears. ‘Do you know how that feels? To have everything taken away from you, to have your life taken away from you…what am I to do?’

Taeyeon, Jessica and Hyoyeon were at Hyoyeon’s dance studio one fine day after school. Hyoyeon was practicing as usual while Taeyeon and Jessica were doing their homework.

‘I’m gonna be the world’s best dancer!’ Hyoyeon suddenly exclaimed.

‘Nee, Hyoyeon, I have something to ask you.’ Jessica said, looking up from her homework.

‘What is it?’

‘How is it possible that you are able to own a dance studio at such a young age?’

Hyoyeon smiled bitterly when the question was asked. Taeyeon and Jessica were puzzled.

‘Well, it’s not exactly all mine. This studio belongs to my mom but she names it after me because she told me that this is all she’ll be able to give me. I just…I just don’t want my mom to leave me alone…she’s all I have in my family. You may not know this but, I’m actually the product of an affair between my mom and dad.’ Hyoyeon burst into tears. Taeyeon and Jessica hurried over to comfort her.

‘Gomene, Hyoyeon. I didn’t mean to stir up any unpleasant emotions in you.’ Jessica said.

Hyoyeon shook her head and chuckled.

‘Why didn’t you tell me this before, Hyo?’ Taeyeon asked out of concern.

‘I don’t want anyone to judge me so I’ve never told anyone. But, now that you know…’

Taeyeon and Jessica took hold of Hyoyeon’s hands in theirs.

‘We will never judge you for you are, Hyoyeon. You are one of us and you forever will be.’ Taeyeon said.

‘Well, I know how it’s like to be judged. Sodeshou ne, Hyoyeon-san? Taeyeon-san?’ Jessica joked.

The three of them laughed it off and embraced each other in a group hug. From that day forward, the three promised each other to never let anything stand in the way of their friendship and will always be on the lookout for each other.

‘Hyoyeon, if this is about that bastard Ryeowook, rest assured I won’t let him harm you!’ Jessica suddenly says.

Sunny and Taeyeon both shoot Jessica a confused look.

‘I’ll explain to you later but let’s get her down first.’ Jessica quickly explains.

‘Yes, Hyo! We won’t let him do anything to you!’ Taeyeon plays along.

‘Me too, Hyo!’ Sunny chips in.

‘Jinjak? You’ll…all of you will help me?’ Hyoyeon suddenly stops crying and starts smiling.

‘Yes, we promise!’ Taeyeon says. The other two nod their heads.

‘If that’s the case…then come and dance with me! Now!’ Hyoyeon gets up and poses, ready to dance.

‘We will dance with you but here.’ Sunny says, pointing to the ground.

‘Didn’t you say you will help me out? And I thought you would do anything for me! I’m so disappointed in all of you!’ Hyoyeon cries again. But unbeknownst to the others, she is only pretending.

‘Omo! She’s so stubborn! But I really can’t dance with her up there! I’m afraid of heights! I will really fall to my death if I do this!’ Sunny says.

Taeyeon and Jessica look at each other for a while, determination in their eyes. Taeyeon then grabs hold of Jessica’s hands, who is confused with Taeyeon’s sudden action.

‘Jessica and I will join you!’ Taeyeon says.

‘YAY!’ Hyoyeon claps her hands.

‘WHAT?’ Jessica’s eyes widen. This is not what Jessica had in mind; she wanted to force Hyoyeon down with Taeyeon’s help.

Despite Jessica’s initial protest, they still go up to the ledge and dance with Hyoyeon. They dance for about 10 minutes but it seems like Hyoyeon is not about to stop anytime soon.

‘Hyoyeon ah, I’m a little tired. Can we stop now?’ Jessica asks.

‘Stop? How dare you say stop? A true dancer never stops. The show must go on!’ Hyoyeon says as she continues to dance.

‘But Hyoyeon, at this rate we’re going, the show must go wrong!’ Taeyeon reasons.

Hyoyeon ignores both of them and continues doing what she has been doing all this while. Only this time, she increases her speed and added in bigger movements. Hyoyeon becomes so excited that she loses her balance and slips off the ledge. Jessica is the first to react and she quickly grabs hold of Hyoyeon’s hand, trying to prevent her from falling. Unfortunately, Jessica is not able to hold on to Hyoyeon for long and she too, loses her balance and slips off the ledge. Taeyeon quickly grabs hold of Jessica but their combined weight causes all of them to fall…

It happens so fast that Sunny panics and she runs from a negotiator to another negotiator asking for help, who in turn try to calm her down. Dong Wook screams and shouts for his wife when he sees the three of them falling. Yoona, who arrives just in time to see the three women falling, screams in panic. Tiffany, who has been observing everything from a corner away from the crowd, quickly runs to the crowd to get a better picture of the situation but keeps a safe distance so as not to attract the media’s attention. Yuri and Sooyoung have also arrived on the scene. Sooyoung yelps when she sees the three women falling. Even the normally cold-hearted Yuri seems to be worried for them.

Fortunately, the police had emergency balloon prepared to catch their fall, if at all they fall and they did. When Sunny hears someone shouting that the three women are safe, she quickly runs down the stairs and exits the building to make sure that it is true. Just when she exits the building, Yoona catches sight of Sunny and she calls out to her. They run together hand-in-hand toward Taeyeon, Jessica and Hyoyeon, who at this point, have been removed from the danger zone.

‘Hyoyeon! What the hell do you think you were doing? Don’t you ever dare scare me like that again!’ Yoona frowns and scolds as soon as she sees Hyoyeon.

‘Ah, Im Yoona!’ Hyoyeon’s eyes brighten up and Yoona sighs and smiles at her. They then hug it out. ‘Yoona! My Girls’ Generation is back! Girls’ Generation!’

While the police are busy trying to disperse the crowd, Dong Wook is checking Taeyeon to make sure she is not hurt and the Girls’ Generation members embrace each other in a group hug. When Tiffany sees that everything is fine, she breathes a sigh of relief and smiles to herself before making a silent exit. Yuri looks around and she sees Tiffany leaving the scene. She recognizes her for who she is and smirks.

‘Unnie, isn’t that your fri – not-friend from earlier today?’ Sooyoung asks innocently.

‘Glad you remember she’s not my friend, Sooyoung.’ Yuri says.

‘But why are you not friends? She seems nice. In fact, they all seem nice.’ Sooyoung says as she observes the little friendship moment the Girls’ Generation members are sharing.

‘Well, do you believe in best friends forever?’ Yuri asks as she looks at the Girls’ Generation members.

‘My best friend from high school did write that in my personal yearbook.’ Sooyoung replies.

‘But are you still best friends?’ Yuri looks at Sooyoung for answer. Sooyoung shakes her head. ‘My point exactly. Let’s go.’

When Yuri and Sooyoung leave, the people from the media are declining steadily as well. The police inform Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny and Yoona that Hyoyeon has to be admitted to the mental hospital because she shows signs of mental instability. They part with Hyoyeon reluctantly as she is strapped in a wheel chair and about to be shipped off to the mental hospital in an ambulance. Before she leaves, however, Hyoyeon beckons Taeyeon to go to her. Taeyeon goes up to her and Hyoyeon sticks her tongue out. To Taeyeon’s surprise, a key is found on the tip of her tongue. Taeyeon takes the key out of Hyoyeon’s tongue.

‘You promised me to help take care of my studio. You must do this favor for me, okay, Taeyeonie? Bye!’ Hyoyeon says.

Before Taeyeon can say anything, Hyoyeon is boarded into the ambulance and is on her way to the mental hospital. When Taeyeon walks back to the group, Jessica sees the key that Taeyeon is holding.

‘What key is that?’ Jessica asks.

‘It’s the key to Hyoyeon’s studio.’ Taeyeon says.

Jessica takes it from Taeyeon. ‘You know, I could really use some help right now.’

‘Hey, what are you –‘

‘Talk to you later. I need my beauty sleep badly.’ Jessica drags her sack and leaves for Hyoyeon’s dance studio.

When Taeyeon and Dong Wook return home, Min-young tells them that ‘grandma has gone to bed but not before shouting that Kim Taeyeon better watch out and making Daisy clean the whole kitchen until it is spick and span before she can sleep.’ Daisy is the Lee family’s Filipino maid. Despite being a maid, she has little to no respect for Taeyeon and sometimes, Taeyeon has to bribe her to do things for her.

Whether she has to deal with an upset mother-in-law or not, Taeyeon nevertheless has trouble falling asleep that night. She is thinking of her promise to Hyoyeon and her dance studio. Another concern on her mind is Ryeowook. What did Ryeowook do to Hyoyeon to make her go insane?

‘Honey? Why are you not sleeping?’ Dong Wook asks.

‘I’m just really worried about Hyoyeon. But that aside, I’ve promised her that I will help her and she has handed me the keys to her studio. I have no idea what happened to the studio but if it involves Ryeowook, then nothing good is going to come out of it.’ Taeyeon sighs.

‘Who’s Ryeowook?’

‘Hyoyeon’s half-brother.’

‘I see. Why don’t you try asking the others for help? Your gang of friends, perhaps? I’m sure they will help an old friend out. Where are the keys then?’

‘Jessica took it. I think she must be putting up a night there since she has no place to go now. You think so, yeobo? You think they’ll help me help Hyoyeon?’

‘Well,’ Dong Wook says and wraps his arms around Taeyeon. ‘It’s worth a try if you ask me. You never know if you never try, right?’

‘I guess you have a point. Thanks, yeobo.’ Taeyeon yawns. ‘I think I’m gonna sleep now. Goodnight.’

Ha ha…forever so cute, my dear Taeyeon. Dong Wook smiles to himself and falls asleep not long after.

When dawn breaks, Taeyeon creeps slowly out of the house. She is trying to avoid running into her mother-in-law but her daughter catches her before she can leave the house.

‘Umma? Where are you going?’ Min-young says.

‘Min-young ah, umma has lots of things to do today. Be a good girl and don’t wake grandma up, okay?’

‘Halmeoni! Umma is going out!’ Min-young says in a loud voice.

‘Yah! Lee Min-young!’

Moments later, Taeyeon’s monstrous mother-in-law emerges from her room. She looks as cold as ever and Taeyeon gulps.

‘Going somewhere?’ Taeyeon’s mother-in-law asks.

I must be strong for Hyoyeon. I must be strong for Hyoyeon. I will not back down! I cannot back down! Taeyeon recites this mantra in her head.

‘Jangmonim, I’m sorry for what happened last night and yes I’m going out. My friend needs me and I don’t care what you have to say about her but I’m going to do what I have to do. So, bye!’

Taeyeon runs out of the house before her mother-in-law can react. She may not have seen it but Taeyeon knows that her mother-in-law must have been angered and shocked by her words and actions. Little does Taeyeon knows that Min-young is startled but impressed by her sudden act of courage.

Taeyeon decides to go to Sunny’s office first. They go over the plan of helping to take care of Hyoyeon’s studio as soon as they meet. Although Sunny is enthusiastic about helping Hyoyeon, she frankly tells Taeyeon that she has no money but assures Taeyeon that she has her full spiritual support. After leaving Sunny’s place slightly disappointed, she moves on to Yoona. However, she visits Yoona at the wrong time as it is peak hour at Yoona’s bistro/bar. They barely have time to talk. When Yoona finally gets some free time, they are unable to go over the whole plan as Yoona’s mother calls her halfway through their conversation. Like Sunny before her, Yoona assures Taeyeon that she has her full spiritual support as well. Taeyeon would have gone to Tiffany next but until now, she has not been able to contact Tiffany. The others also have no idea where she is. Taeyeon then decides to drop by the dance studio.

When Taeyeon reaches the dance studio, she calls Jessica to ask her to open the door for her. Jessica unlocks the door in an instant to let her in. Taeyeon is a little surprised to see Jessica dressed down than usual. In fact, Jessica is seen in her pajamas, only her pajamas are more stylish than Taeyeon’s.

‘I’m sure your husband can buy you one of these from Gangnam.’ Jessica says and rolls her eyes. Well, the old Jessica is back but at least they are on talking terms now.

‘So, you’re really staying here, huh?’ Taeyeon asks.

‘Don’t get me wrong. I’ll only be here temporarily. Soon enough, I will be out of this place and off to my new crib.’ Jessica says with an air of arrogance.

‘But you’ll help Hyoyeon out, won’t you?’

‘Did I say that?’ Jessica takes out her nail buffer and starts buffing her nails.

‘You nodded your head.’

‘That doesn’t mean anything, Taeyeon. A nod can mean many things but promising Hyoyeon to take care of this studio is not one of them.’

‘But since you’re staying here now, you might as well, right?’

‘Oh, yes, I might as well since I’m staying here now.’ Jessica imitates Taeyeon’s tone. Taeyeon rolls her eyes in annoyance. ‘Think about this: who forced me to stay here? Who forced me out of a potentially good marriage? Who –‘

‘Okay, fine, it’s me. You happy now?’

‘Well,’ Jessica does seem a little happier now. ‘Hyoyeon’s my friend too. So, of course I’ll help take care of her studio for her.’ Upon hearing this, Taeyeon’s eyes brighten up.

‘But, I think you should take a look at this.’ Jessica says and proceeds to take out a stack of envelopes from the bedroom. She hands them over to Taeyeon and Taeyeon starts flipping through each of them. It is a pile of outstanding bills.

‘Omo! How long has Hyoyeon not paid her bills? She’s impossible sometimes, you know?’ Taeyeon says while flipping through the bills.

‘You’re gonna pay for all of them, right?’ Jessica asks nonchalantly.

‘What? Why me?’

‘Because you promised to take care of the studio for her. Besides, you know I’m broke now because somebody just had to crash my party.’ Jessica eyes Taeyeon for a moment to make her feel guilty. Even though Taeyeon is annoyed at Jessica’s constant reminder, she knows that she is right.

‘Fine! I’ll do it.’

‘Thanks, Taeyeon.’ Jessica smiles sarcastically at Taeyeon. ‘Now, where did I put my sheet mask?’

While Jessica goes for a sheet mask session, Taeyeon decides to hang in the studio for a while and turns on the TV. She flips a few channels before a familiar face catches her attention. Her eyes widen as she realizes that the person on TV is Tiffany. It is a live broadcast so that means Tiffany must still be in the place where the broadcast is going on. She studies the surrounding on screen and she finds out that it is a government building. Taeyeon switches off the TV, takes her bag and informs Jessica that she is going out to look for Tiffany. Well, it’s not like Jessica cares since she is busy with her sheet mask session.

When Taeyeon arrives at the building, she sees several reporters asking questions and the questions are all directed to Ryu Jin, the current candidate for the prime minister post. Ryu Jin is also Tiffany’s boss. She sees Tiffany standing next to him and she occasionally tells the reporters that Ryu Jin will not answer the question due to several different reasons. Taeyeon tries to get Tiffany’s attention but a security guard signals her to stop moving around. But lucky for her, the press conference ends shortly after and she goes after Tiffany.

Meanwhile, Tiffany and Ryu Jin walk together to the car park to collect their car.

‘I’m in a good mood today. Let’s play something fun, right now.’ Ryu Jin says and he caresses Tiffany’s . Tiffany jerks in surprise and blushes. The truth is, Ryu Jin and Tiffany are having an affair together behind Ryu Jin's wife's back.

‘TIFFANY!’

They hear a disembodied voice calling Tiffany’s name. Ryu Jin quickly gets in the car and lowers the seat to avoid being seen. Tiffany then sees Taeyeon running towards her.

‘Tiffany! I’ve finally found you!’ Taeyeon says, catching her breath.

Tiffany looks around and she looks at Taeyeon with fear.

‘Why are you so afraid of me? I’m Taeyeon, Kim Taeyeon!’

‘Did you see anyone on your way here?’ Tiffany asks.

‘No.’

‘You sure? There was no one following you?’

‘I’m pretty sure. Why? Are you telling me that this place is haunted?’ Taeyeon suddenly feels scared.

‘Oh no, it’s not that. Um, what brings you here?’

‘I’m here to talk to you about Hyoyeon. You remember her, don’t you?’

Tiffany nods her head.

Taeyeon goes over her plan of taking care of Hyoyeon’s studio with Tiffany. But Taeyeon is the only one doing the talking with Tiffany listening with a blank expression on her face.

‘So, what do you think?’ Taeyeon asks once she is finished.

Tiffany shrugs her shoulders.

‘What do you mean this?’ Taeyeon asks, imitating Tiffany shrugging her shoulders.

‘It means I have no comment.’ Tiffany says, looking at Taeyeon in the eye.

‘What? You have no comment? That can’t be! You were the loudest and the most opinionated one in our group. You must have something to say about this.’ Taeyeon says.

‘That’s all in the past.’ Tiffany says coldly and looks away.

‘Okay, but at least you have advice for me? Since you’re working for the government?’

‘My advice will be, for what it’s worth, stop doing what you do. You’re only wasting your time. With the amount of time you spend on this, you could have spent it on more important things like your family. That’s all I have to say.’

‘Tiffany –‘

‘Goodbye.’ Tiffany cuts Taeyeon off abruptly and goes to her car.

As Taeyeon takes a slow walk down the street, she realizes how time has changed everyone. Even though it seems like Hyoyeon is the only one who is unchanged, she nevertheless has changed to become a mental patient. She thinks back of the time when they were still a bunch of high school girls and making promises to each other. Were they empty promises all along?

The Girls’ Generation members were eating at McDoug’s Burger. Sunny ordered two double cheese burgers while everyone had normal size servings.

‘Yah, I was thinking…will you guys ever forget me if I become too fat one day?’ Sunny asked, chomping away on her burger.

‘I think if you become slim one day, we’ll start having problems remembering you.’ Yoona said.

‘Yah~ you’re so mean!’

Yoona stuck her tongue out at Sunny, who did the same in return.

‘But seriously, we are not gonna forget each other, right?’ Hyoyeon asked.

‘Well, I think I’ll be the first one to be forgotten since I’m, you know, kinda like a foreigner.’ Jessica said.

‘That’s where you’re wrong, Sica. You’ll forever be remembered for your unique trait.’ Tiffany said.

‘What’s that?’ Jessica sounded all excited.

‘The Korean who speaks Japanese.’ Tiffany said. The whole table started laughing. Jessica hit Tiffany lightly on the arm for making fun of her.

‘But jokes aside, I don’t think I’ll ever forget anyone of you. We’ll be best friends forever, till the very end of time, right?’ Taeyeon said.

‘Yesssshhhh!’ Sunny said with full.

‘Omo! Not with your mouth full again, Sunny.’ Hyoyeon said and shook her head.

‘Let’s toast to that! Best friends forever!’ Tiffany took up her cup of soda and proposed a toast.

‘To BFF!’ Yoona said.

‘To BFF!’ the rest joined in and bumped their cups together in a mock toast.

They promised each other to always be there for each other and will never forget each other till the end of time. But how true does this promise hold?

Chapter 7: Good luck to whatever you'll do in future. We have nothing to say about it because that's your decision. But please, read my message for you. This song is titled, "I Won't Give Up" by Jason Mraz. Hope you'll like it. :)

Well, I won't give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I'm giving you all my love
I'm still looking up

And when you're needing your space
To do some navigating
I'll be here patiently waiting
To see what you find

'Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth
We've got a lot to learn
God knows we're worth it
No, I won't give up

Chapter 5: I have no prior knowledge about the drama you referred on the FW, but I know I'll really like this type of story. A pure soshi friendship fiction is rarity in aff. Hwaitaeng!
